Naval Heritage Victoria founder awarded a Pride of Australia Medal.

Mackenzie Gregory seeks votes for People’s Choice medal and prize to help the Foundation
Mackenzie Gregory, WWII veteran and founder of the Naval Heritage Foundation, (see MHHV Member listing or link to the member listing), I was awarded a Pride of Australia Medal in the Community Spirit section for Victoria, as part of News Limited’s prideofaustralia™ initiative which recognises special Australians for their extraordinary bravery, inspiration, heroism, care and compassion, courage, leadership, community or environmental contribution.

At just 13 years old, Mackenzie “Mac” Gregory signed up for the Naval College. After almost 20 years with the Royal Australian Navy, he triumphantly survived the sinking of HMAS Canberra and was aboard HMAS Shropshire in Tokyo Bay Japan when their surrender was signed. Mackenzie has devoted much of his life to ensuring the sacrifices of Australia’s naval service men and women are remembered. The 89-year-old has spent the past 12 years campaigning to have a memorial built in honour of the 15,000 men and women who passed through Port Melbourne before the navy withdrew its presence from the port. He also maintains a popular website dedicated to the history of Australian naval warfare (ahoy.tk-jk.net) and helps people worldwide find information on loved ones lost in the war.

Mackenzie now seeks votes for a People’s Choice medal which may allow him a cash prize which will support the aims of the Foundation.

Military History and Heritage Victoria President, Marcus Fielding, said, “We are pleased to endorse this quest for Mackenzie Gregory.  He is an inspiration to all meet him and his goal to erect memorial to Naval personnel who passed through Port Melbourne is an especially worthy cause, combining the best of our naval and maritime history in Victoria.”

Voting for the People’s Choice Medal with a $10,000 cash prize is open from October 16 to November 7.
