Horsham RSL / Horsham U3A – Military History 2011 / 2012

Major Jim Amos RFD ED (Rtd) reports from Horsham reports that in late 2008 the Horsham University of the Third Age (U3A) received a grant to fund a Victorian Government initiative called the U3A Program Growth Support Fund.  This involved the development of a new program and partnering with some other community entity. It was decided to invite the Horsham Sub-Branch RSL to partner with U3A to establish and present a series of Military History programs.
Horsham RSL / Horsham U3A commenced monthly Military History sessions on Wednesday 24 May 2009 and these are now held on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Horsham RSL Conference Room commencing at 7-30pm. The sessions are available to all RSL / U3A members and the general public free of charge.

On the first session for 2011 we studied the story of the Gallipoli Submarine, Australian submarine AE2. Some of the other sessions  covered in 2011 were the study of the films ‘The Road to Iwo Jima’, Parts 1 and 2, the ‘Normandy Landings 1944, Australian Women at War – the Nurses, the Vietnam War, the Great War 1914-1918, WWI War at Sea, (RN and RAN),  The Gallipoli Campaign and the battle of Cambrai – the end of WWI.  The first session for 2012 was ‘When War came to Australia’ with 52 people in attendance.

Some of the coming sessions will be ‘Tribute to the RAAF’ on Wednesday 28 March, ‘Spirit of the Railway’ – the story of the Thai-Burma railway on Wednesday  23 May, and the ‘Quiet Lion’ – the story of ‘Weary’ Dunlop and others on Wednesday 27 June.

Jim said ‘We have usually have between 20 to 30 people attending sessions with a good mix of RSL and U3A members and a good mix of men and ladies.  Participants are encouraged to bring a friend who would be interested in a particular session as their guest.’
