SUMMARY:Mud and Blood - WWI play by Meg McNena directed by Alice Bishop - Special Performance
DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal . Please share in your networks and newsletter this opportunity to see a story about local heroes by a Moonee Ponds writer. \nA brilliant cast and skilled production team is powerfully directed by Alice Bishop\, who has been nominated for a Green Room Award for best director. Writer and producer\, Meg McNena\, has an Amnesty International Award and others for writing; this is her sixth play staged. Darren Mort\, a lawyer like Pompey\,plays his complex character masterfully. Humour and songs intone the era. \nMud and Blood‚Äôs Melbourne premiere is at the Clocktower Centre\, Moonee Ponds at 12 noon on Friday 31 August with a Q&A and talk by Ross McMullin\, awarded historian\, biographer and author of two books on Pompey Elliott (included in the matinee price) and opening night is 8pm 31 August. \nElliott trained youth in the Essendon Rifles militia; three units of his 7th Battalion came from the Northern suburbs and one from the Western suburbs; they trained at Broadmeadows and went with him to Gallipoli\, Lone Pine\, Fromelles and trenches of The Somme\, where Elliott turned the outcome of WWI in the Allies favour. Pompey inspires as husband\, father\, brother\, friend\, leader\, veteran and senator – the soldier before and after war; the stalwart wife keeps the family going; the cost for Pompey in making this heartfelt but impossible promise and returning to unveil honour boards and memorials. \nWe want to share this significant history of world-changing times for the newly declared nation of Australia and to increase awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder. \nHere is the vox pop from our successful preview in Charlton\, where Pompey was born. \nClick here for more information

SUMMARY:The Silent ANZAC
DESCRIPTION:Footscray-Yarraville City Band is proud to present a concert to commemorate the ANZAC spirit in the centenary yearof the landing and ANZAC campaign at Gallipoli.\nThe concert will honour the courage and sacrifice of those lost in all conflicts and explores the emotion and despair at the futility of war and the human desire for lasting world peace. \nThe concert features internationally renowned performers along with the Footscray-Yarraville City Band in a production spanning repertoire from the period through to contemporary pieces to present the spirit of our Nation through music and performance. \nWe are pleased to present at the concert the world premiere of a specially commissioned major work titled ‘The Silent ANZAC’ composed by Todd Smith. \nTodd was chosen based on his fast growing international reputation as a composer of significant talent. \nHe was the first recipient of the Lady Adrienne Stewart bursary for composition and since has written two major works for the Brighouse and Rastrick band of England. \nTodd is based in New Zealand and we are thrilled to continue the ANZAC spirit in collaborating on this major work. \nAt just 20 years of age\, Todd is an exciting talent and we look forward to many future works from him. \nThe musical work ‘The Silent ANZAC’ is inspired by often overlooked story of the Australian submarine\, the HMAS AE2\, captained by Lieutenant-Commander Henry Stoker and his 32 man crew\, whose mission was to penetrate the heavily mined Dardanelles Straights into the Sea of Marmara to disrupt enemy shelling of the Gallipoli shore to allow the ANZAC troop landings and to interrupt the flow of enemy reinforcements by ship.\nThe efforts of the AE2 was one of the few strategic successes of the ANZAC Day landing at Gallipoli. \nFive days later\, in the Sea of Marmara the AE2 was sunk and Stoker and the crew of the AE2 Stoker and his crew began three and a half years of captivity in Turkish prisoner- of-war camps. \nFootscray-Yarraville City Band are grateful for the support and funding from the Australian Government’s ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program to present this concert and specially commissioned work. \nFREE ADMISSION • Bookings essential through www.trybooking.com/158554
