DESCRIPTION:Royal United Services Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address – Thursday 30th May 2019 at 1200 for 1230 – ANZAC House \, 4 Collins St\, Melbourne \nDr V John Basarin OAM\nTopic: Gallipoli – The Turkish Perspective \nVecihi “John” Başarın is a Turkish Australian historian and author with a special interest in Gallipoli. He has been awarded a PhD by Deakin University. His thesis\, entitled Battlefield Tourism: Anzac Day Commemorations at Gallipoli is the culmination of a lifelong interest in Gallipoli. \nHis research has been instrumental in bringing a Turkish perspective to understanding the ANZAC campaign. He is a speaker on the subject and has co-authored six books in both English and Turkish which are used widely as resource material for schools\, media\, exhibitions and libraries. John has written many articles and conference papers on his research and made guest appearances on television features and radio programs on Gallipoli. \nFor his outstanding service and individual efforts in uniting cultures\, he received the Victorian Premier’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs in 2005. \nIn 2010\, John was recognised by the RSL as a contributor to understanding and world peace and awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize.
