SUMMARY:Defending Australia and its Interests: Continuity and Change?
DESCRIPTION:Can Australia defend itself?  \n \nWhat national interests must we protect? As a sovereign nation\, are we becoming more or less secure? What can we learn from our experience to now? How can we better think about the future? \nJoin an esteemed group of critical thinkers for a one-day Seminar to consider these questions of national importance.\nThe Seminar will begin with four noted speakers presenting papers that examine four eras in our national history. \nEach speaker will address five essential questions:\n• What were Australia’s Interests? (real or perceived)\n• What threatened those interests?\n• What strategy did the Australian Government adopt to protect its interests?\n• Was the strategy successful?\n• What lessons can be identified? \nThe eras that each speaker will consider are:\n• Dr Tom Rogers – pre-Federation to post-First World War.\n• Professor David Horner – the Inter-War period to the Cold War.\n• Professor Peter Edwards – the Cold War.\n• Professor Peter Leahy – the post-Cold War era. \nThe four speakers will then be followed by a facilitated panel discussion that seeks to identify the factors that are relevant to our contemporary circumstances. \nJoining the four speakers will be three prominent strategists: Honorary Professor Brendan Sargeant from the Australian National University and Captain Sean Andrews from the Sea Power Centre. \nDownload the seminar program here.\nTicket pricing ($25 per person) includes tea and coffee and gourmet sandwich lunch. SUMMARY:The Timeline Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Timeline Festival is an annual re-enactment event that is held at Kryal Castle\, near Ballarat in Regional Victoria. The Festival attracts over 350 historical reenactors and merchants covering time periods from Ancient Greece through to World War Two. \nThe event is run over three days and incorporates a public event\, which is held on the Saturday and Sunday\, and includes a whole range of re-enactment activities to showcase the skills and crafts of the re-enactment community. \nFor full details of this year’s event\, please see below. \n \nThe 2019 Timeline Festival Event \nThe 2019 Timeline Festival will be held on the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of October 2019 at Kryal Castle\, near Ballarat in Victoria. Re-enactors are welcome to attend on Friday the 18th\, which is our traditional re-enactors only day (for registration confirmation and set up). You can keep up to date with information on the public event via Facebook\, just click the button below to get to the event page \nMembers of the public are welcome to wear their own costumes to the event and also highly encouraged to visit the Living History Village outside of the castle and mingle with the reenactors. The Living History Village (on the terraces to the right of the castle) features over 300m of living history displays. As well as the Viking and Medieval villages\, there will be a full metal combat arena (this just has to be seen to be believed)\, a 14th century tavern\, a blacksmith forge\, period traders and market stalls and various displays of crafting\, period cooking and historical displays. \nInside the castle\, there will be more period traders and merchants as well as a host of activities in the main arena and around the castle which include the mounted skill at arms competition\, the Castle Jousters\, NVG Viking combat\, Napoleonic black powder (musket) display\, The Pioneers Challenge (Musket and Axe)\, The Knattleikr (A tradiitional Viking ball game) and all of the traditional Castle activities \, a traditional archery competition and a whole range of other activities for you all to enjoy. \nKey activities for the 2019 event include: \nMounted Melee / Joust of War / Traditional Joust\nMilitary Equitation Australia “Mounted skill at arms”\nMedieval Full Contact Combat (HMB)\nViking Knattleikr Tournament (Traditional viking ball game)\nTraditional Craft / Market Stalls\nLiving History Villages (Viking and Medieval)\nOver 300m of Living History Encampments and Displays\nTraditional Archery Competition\nLive Action Role Play Combat\nWorking Blacksmith Forge\nChildren’s Entertainment\nFood\, Drink and Refreshment Tents\nPeriod merchants and traders\nAnd much more!!!!! \nWeekend program \nThe program for the 2019 event will be issued nearer to the event (normally around September) \nFor more go to http://timeline.org.au/
