SUMMARY:Battle for Beersheba & The Ottoman III Corps - presented by Professor Mesut Uyar
DESCRIPTION:Although the centenary passed years ago\, public interest in the Beersheba Battle (31 October 1917) is high in Australia. \n \nNew titles appear frequently\, and library shelves are moaning under the weight of them. But most of these works are just repeating well-established discourses and focus on the Australian Light Horse at the expense of others. More British Territorial soldiers fought in the battle than Australian Light horsemen and they did most of the killing and dying. It is no wonder that the Ottomans are mostly absent from this story telling if even the British are denied their rightful place. In most modern accounts\, Ottoman troops have been described as passive defenders\, only reacting to Australian actions and nothing more. \nThis lecture is an attempt to tell and describe what happened ‘on the other side of the hill’ and answer some of the resilient questions by putting the battle into the context of the Palestine Campaign and WW1 as a whole. The Beersheba Battle was part of a series of battles fought on a secondary front of a global war. The Australians fought as a part of British Imperial Forces. In addition to Australians and New Zealanders there were soldiers from the British Isles\, India\, Egypt (labourers) and even Pacific and Caribbean islands. The Ottoman units were composed of not only Turks but also Arabs\, Kurds\, Circassians\, Albanians and other nationalities. \nBecause WW1 was a giant struggle between two alliances\, the Germans and Austro-Hungarians\, though in small numbers\, played roles. The French wanted to take part but for imperialistic reasons the British tried to minimise their contribution. This was not a battle between two nations\, Australians against Turks\, but between two large multinational empires which were\, at the same time\, members of great alliances. \nLECTURE TIME AND VENUE: 10:30AM Saturday 4 May 2024 at The Auditorium\, Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, Hyde Park South\, corner Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. He delivered his first speech to parliament on 5 September 2022. \nHe was born in Dublin in 1977 and migrated with his family to Melbourne in 1988. \nIn 1993 his family proudly became Australian citizens and soon after\, Keith was elected school captain of Ringwood Secondary College. His part-time job was at Eastland McDonald’s. Keith was educated at the University of Melbourne (Politics and Economics) and Monash University (Law with Honours)\, where he was awarded the Sir Charles Lowe Prize for Best Advocate. He later completed a Masters of International Relations at the University of Cambridge. \nAfter graduating in 2005\, Keith worked as a lawyer with national commercial firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques\, before becoming a barrister in 2010. At the Bar he specialised in commercial and consumer trials. \nKeith also served in the Australian Army\, completing part-time officer training at MUR and Duntroon\, reaching the rank of Captain. He qualified as a commando\, serving several periods of full-time service within Special Operations Command\, including one tour of Timor-Leste (2007) and three combat tours in Afghanistan (2008\, 2009/10\, 2014). \nIn the 2011 Australia Day Honours\, he was decorated with a Commendation for Distinguished Service for performance of duty in action as a platoon commander. \n  \nRefund policy\nMURA recognises that attendees availability may change due to circumstances beyond their control.\nUp to the RSVP date\, 26 April 2024\, refunds are available less costs (Trybooking charges)\nAfter that date\, we will have locked numbers to University House and completed table lists.\nUnless there are exceptional circumstances refunds can only be made if a replacement guest can be obtained.
