He has been a UN Observer in Iran\, and also Deputy Commander JTF 636\, responsible for the security of the Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006\, after which he left the Regular Army and transferred to the Reserve. While working as CEO of RSL Victoria\, he also attended CDSS and was promoted Brigadier in 2013\, assuming command of 4 Bde. \nResuming full time military service in May 2015\, Michael deployed to Afghanistan as the Australian Task Group Commander from July 2015 to March 2016. Upon his return from Afghanistan Michael returned to his role with the Victorian RSL. He also took up the position Director General Reserves – Army\, a part time appointment within Army HQ. In January 2019 Michael moved to the position of Assistant Commander of 2nd Division. \nMichael moved in October 2019 to a contracted role with the Department of Veteran Affairs where he contributed to the establishment of six new Veteran and Family Wellbeing Hubs nationally followed by working in support of the Joint Transition Authority within Defence\, focused on updating the Defence Transition Manual to reflect best practice in managing and improving transition outcomes for ADF members and their families. Michael is undertaking further project work for Defence as a Reserve senior officer within Joint Capability Group and in a private capacity provides strategic consultancy services with a focus on policy development and sustainable service delivery planning.Michael is the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Military Veteran Group\, is a member of the Victorian Council of the Royal United Services Institute\, and in January 2023 was elected as the National President of the Defence Reserves Association. SUMMARY:A Boer War Day Commemoration Service Shrine of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 26 May will be our fourteenth annual Boer War Day Commemoration Service at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. This year we will be Commemorating the 122nd Anniversary Signing of the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902\, officially ending the Boer War\, MHHV Committee Member Dr Daryl Moran\, will deliver the Commemoration address\, Victoria and the Scottish Horse. \n \nThis annual event will honour the service of 23\,000 Australian’s and more than 6\,500 New Zealand soldiers and nurses and the sacrifice of 1\,000 Australian’s and more than 230 New Zealander’s\, killed in action\, died of wounds\, in accidents\, or from disease. The march will step off from the bottom of the steps to the lower end of the Shrine forecourt at 11.50 am\, the Service will commence at 12 noon at the Eternal Flame. The ceremony will conclude at 1pm followed by refreshments in the gardens between the flags and Birdwood Avenue.

SUMMARY:From Books and Blackboards to Battlefields- Victoria’s State School Teacher-Soldiers in the Great War - Speaker: Rosalie Triolo
DESCRIPTION:All of us have memories of our schooldays\, but few Victorians have paused to contemplate the experiences of Victoria’s male State school teachers\, mainly ‘primary’ but with some from the beginnings of State ‘secondary’ and ‘technical’ education\, who served in the Great War. \n \n \nThis presentation explores experiences common to those teachers as enlistees\, as educated tourists\, as trainers of soldiers\, as men at the front\, as members of an Education Department community\, and as teachers and ‘students of life’ while overseas. \nIt further explores how\, compared to Australia’s enlistment overall\, Victoria’s eligible-aged State school teachers were more likely to enlist than Australia’s non-teachers\, more likely to enlist early than late-war\, more likely to become officers and non-commissioned officers\, more likely to receive military honours\, decorations and other awards and\, tragically\, slightly more likely to die. \nMany of the experiences would hold true for Victoria’s independent school teachers\, but this presentation draws on a variety of examples from State school communities Victoria-wide\, some stories being humorous and remarkable in coincidence\, others being wholly tragic\, and many from schools\, even whole towns\, that no longer exist. \nScan or click this QR code to book your ticket.\nAbout the presenter \nRosalie Triolo is an adjunct senior lecturer at Monash University who writes and presents widely in History education\, history of Australian education\, Australian history generally\, and on WWI. For 25 years\, she helped facilitate the development of specialist teachers of History for Australian and overseas schools before retiring from Monash at the end of 2021. She is a Fellow and currently the Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria\, as well as Chair of its Historical Societies Support Committee. She has served voluntarily on the RHSV Council since 2014 and is one of two delegates to the Federation of Australian Historical Societies (2020- ). She is a past President of the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria (6 years)\, a past Board member (further 24 years) and a Life Member\, being the longest-serving contributor to the HTAV community in each of those roles. She is currently Victoria’s representative on the Council of the Australian National Museum of Education (2015- ); and was the History Teachers’ Association of Australia delegate to the Australian Historical Association (2010-20). \nRosalie has published general public as well as scholarly works and teacher/tutor professional learning and classroom resources for tertiary\, secondary and primary education audiences\, including for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs education and commemoration branches. Her MEd by research of ‘State Schooling and Civic and Citizenship Ideals in Victoria\, 1872-1910’ was the precursor to her award-winning doctoral thesis\, ‘”Our Schools and the War”: Victoria’s Education Department and the Great War\, 1914-18’ which became the book of similar title ‘Commended’ in the Victorian Community History Awards\, 2012. For the above and voluntarily contributing to Shrine of Remembrance lectures and education programs since its undercroft was developed\, she was awarded in the 2015 Anzac Centenary year the Shrine of Remembrance Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Community Understandings of Victorian Service and Sacrifice in Wars and Peace-Keeping.

He delivered his first speech to parliament on 5 September 2022. \nHe was born in Dublin in 1977 and migrated with his family to Melbourne in 1988. \nIn 1993 his family proudly became Australian citizens and soon after\, Keith was elected school captain of Ringwood Secondary College. His part-time job was at Eastland McDonald’s. Keith was educated at the University of Melbourne (Politics and Economics) and Monash University (Law with Honours)\, where he was awarded the Sir Charles Lowe Prize for Best Advocate. He later completed a Masters of International Relations at the University of Cambridge. \nAfter graduating in 2005\, Keith worked as a lawyer with national commercial firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques\, before becoming a barrister in 2010. At the Bar he specialised in commercial and consumer trials. \nKeith also served in the Australian Army\, completing part-time officer training at MUR and Duntroon\, reaching the rank of Captain. SUMMARY:Battle for Beersheba & The Ottoman III Corps - presented by Professor Mesut Uyar
DESCRIPTION:Although the centenary passed years ago\, public interest in the Beersheba Battle (31 October 1917) is high in Australia. \n \nNew titles appear frequently\, and library shelves are moaning under the weight of them. But most of these works are just repeating well-established discourses and focus on the Australian Light Horse at the expense of others. More British Territorial soldiers fought in the battle than Australian Light horsemen and they did most of the killing and dying. It is no wonder that the Ottomans are mostly absent from this story telling if even the British are denied their rightful place. In most modern accounts\, Ottoman troops have been described as passive defenders\, only reacting to Australian actions and nothing more. \nThis lecture is an attempt to tell and describe what happened ‘on the other side of the hill’ and answer some of the resilient questions by putting the battle into the context of the Palestine Campaign and WW1 as a whole. The Beersheba Battle was part of a series of battles fought on a secondary front of a global war. The Australians fought as a part of British Imperial Forces. In addition to Australians and New Zealanders there were soldiers from the British Isles\, India\, Egypt (labourers) and even Pacific and Caribbean islands. The Ottoman units were composed of not only Turks but also Arabs\, Kurds\, Circassians\, Albanians and other nationalities. \nBecause WW1 was a giant struggle between two alliances\, the Germans and Austro-Hungarians\, though in small numbers\, played roles. The French wanted to take part but for imperialistic reasons the British tried to minimise their contribution. This was not a battle between two nations\, Australians against Turks\, but between two large multinational empires which were\, at the same time\, members of great alliances. \nLECTURE TIME AND VENUE: 10:30AM Saturday 4 May 2024 at The Auditorium\, Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, Hyde Park South\, corner Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. Special guest speaker Brigadier Michael Annett CSC will speak about the Reserve Strategic Review. \nAbout the Topic: \nAs a consequence of the Defence Strategic Review which reported publicly in April 2023\, Defence has been tasked to conduct a very comprehensive and far-reaching strategic review of Defence Reserves in Australia to consider reserves and reserve service [i.e. the pattern of reserve service as much as the people themselves] as part of National Defence in the light of current strategic circumstances. \nWe are faced with a deteriorating security environment overall. Hence\, one of the driving forces behind the DSR is the loss of the 10-years’ warning-of-conflict period that had featured so heavily in our thinking up until this point. \nIn light of these changing circumstances\, the Review is to investigate innovative ways to adapt the current structure\, shape\, conditions of service\, and role of the Reserves to determine how the Defence Reserves can best complement the total defence workforce and can provide an expansion base and follow-on forces in time of crisis. \nThe review is to investigate innovative ways to adapt the current structure\, shape\, conditions of service\, and role of the Reserves to determine how the Reserves can best complement the total defence workforce and provide an expansion base and follow-on forces in time of crisis. \nAbout our Speaker: Brigadier Michael Annett CSC \nBrigadier Michael Annett CSC\nMichael was born on 1st March 1962 in Western Victoria and after completing his secondary education at Hamilton High School he entered the Royal Military College in 1980\, graduating in 1983. His initial appointment in 1985 was as a Troop Leader in 1st Armoured Regiment. 1987 – 1989 saw him as a Squadron 2IC in 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He also served as Officer Commanding A Squadron\, 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1993/4 and the Commanding Officer of 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment in Victoria in 2000/2001. \nIn 1988/89 Michael served as a UN Military Observer on the ceasefire line between Iran and Iraq and he has participated in exchanges with British and New Zealand armoured units and with the US Army. \nHe held a number of training and staff appointments including Senior Instructor Tactics at the School of Armour\, Commanding Officer and Chief Instructor of Warrant Officer and NCO Wing at the Land Warfare Centre Canungra and Chief of Staff\, Headquarters 2nd Division\, in 2003/4. \nMichael Annett is a graduate of the Australian Army Command and Staff College which he attended in 1995 and from which he was awarded a Diploma in Management Studies. As a graduate of the University of New South Wales he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in History in 1984\, and from Deakin University he was awarded a Masters Degree in International Relations in 1999. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. \nColonel Annett’s final appointment in the Regular Army was as Deputy Commander Joint Task Force 636\, responsible for planning and delivering ADF support to the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games\, in March 2006. \nMichael left the Regular Army to serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Branch of the RSL in May 2006\, the state’s major veteran support organisation and a large commercial hospitality and aged care facilitation enterprise. In 2007 Michael resumed his soldiering as a Reservist. He attended the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies as a part-time student in Canberra in 2012 and was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Studies. Michael was promoted to Brigadier on 1st January 2013 to assume command of 4th Brigade in 2013. \nResuming full time military service in May 2015\, Michael deployed to Afghanistan as the Australian Task Group Commander from July 2015 to March 2016. \nUpon his return from Afghanistan Michael returned to his role with the Victorian RSL. With the Manual now adopted Michael is undertaking further project work for Defence as a Reserve senior officer within Joint Capability Group and in a private capacity provides strategic consultancy services with a focus on policy development and sustainable service delivery planning. \nMichael was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) in the 2007 Australia Day Honours List and received a Commendation for Distinguished Service for his role in Afghanistan in the 2017 Queens Birthday Honours List. He was appointed an Honorary Aide de Camp to the Governor-General and since March 2021 has been the Honorary Colonel of 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment and is Patron of the Regimental Association. Michael is the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Military Veteran Group\, is a member of the Victorian Council of the Royal United Services Institute\, and in January 2023 was elected as the National President of the Defence Reserves Association. He is also a Legatee and Vice President of Melbourne Legacy. \nMichael Annett and his wife Helen have a son\, William and a daughter\, Victoria. DESCRIPTION:The RAAF – Post Force Structure Review.\n \n \nAir Commodore Joe Medved\nDirector General\, Defence Aviation Safety Authority \n\nTopic: The RAAF – Post Force Structure Review. \n\nAir Commodore Medved joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1992 and graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy as an Aeronautical Engineering Officer. In his career\, AIRCDRE Medved has held aviation engineering\, technical and program management positions in Defence operational\, sustainment\, acquisition and aviation safety regulatory organisations. He has broad technical experience spanning maintenance\, design\, type certification\, and aviation safety regulations supporting Defence fixed and rotary wing aviation capabilities. \nAir Commodore Medved is an experienced aviation safety professional and was appointed as the Director General Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) in December 2020. DESCRIPTION:MHHV 5th Biennial Two-Day Conference – 13 & 14 APRIL 2024 \n \n \nThis conference will examine the Cold War period (1947-1991)\, its impact on Australia’s defence and security posture and Australia’s contribution to the Western alliance during this time.  Australia’s involvement in Asia in particular\, arising from its part in the ANZUS treaty of 1951 and in SEATO from 1954 will be examined – its role in the Malayan Emergency\, the Korean War\, konfrontasi and the Vietnam War all within the context of potential nuclear war. Australia’s Army\, Navy\, and Air Force were all engaged in this struggle\, partly against the Soviet Union but mostly against revolutionary movements in Asia supported by Communist China. Australia’s counter-intelligence operations within Australia will also be examined. \nWhat was Australia’s security position in 1947 and how did this lead to ANZUS? How did domestic politics play out in the larger anti-communist context? What drove the establishment of SEATO? Why did Australia join the UN forces in Korea? What was the Far Eastern Strategic Reserve? What were the priorities for a non-nuclear army training under a nuclear threat? How did Australia’s signals intelligence contribute? SUMMARY:Beyond the 'Kantai Kessen' - Japan's Fateful Defeat in the Southwest Pacific
DESCRIPTION:In the ‘Kantai Kessen’ (decisive naval battle doctrine) the Japanese navy would win a war by fighting and winning a single\, decisive naval action.\nAt the beginning of May 1942 Japan prepared to commence a fresh wave of offensive actions in the Southwest Pacific with the ultimate aims of strategically isolating Australia and America while seeking to finally neutralise the US Pacific Fleet through the destruction of its aircraft-carrier arm. Within a year the ambitions of the Japanese Naval Staff lay in ruins\, and the ultimate fate of Japan itself was effectively sealed. \nThis presentation seeks to illustrate the core weakness of the Japanese military machine\, namely its wholesale commitment to offensive warfare\, which was exposed and deflated by the Allies in the course of the New Guinea and Solomons campaigns following the disastrous reversal of fortunes for the Imperial Japanese Navy at Midway in early June 1942. Over-ambitious strategic planning\, fractious inter-service relations between the Japanese Army and Navy\, the lack of proper logistics and supply infrastructure\, and weaknesses in the buildup of air and naval forces are identified as the core reasons why any contemplated operations against Australia other than bombing and submarine warfare were eventually untenable\, and made the defence of Japan’s Pacific island shield similarly impossible. DESCRIPTION:In March 1924 a fleet of Royal Navy ships visited Australia as part of a world-wide goodwill cruise. \nBritish Fleet met by Couta boats from the Queenscliff Fishing Fleet as it enters Port Phillip Heads at dawn during the visit to Australia. [National Library of Australia]\nThe largest and fastest battleship in the world (HMS Hood) was accompanied by HMS Repulse and four light cruisers. \nMelbourne\, then the nation’s capital\, hosted the fleet from 17th – 24th March. \nThe visit was a sensation with over 500\,000 visitors to the ships\, an RAAF flyover\, ceremonial marches\, dinners\, dances and fireworks. \nMelbourne Maritime Heritage Network together with the Royal United Services Institute of Victoria will commemorate this centenary by a free talk and exhibition at the Shrine of Remembrance at 2 pm on Tuesday 19th March 2024. \nThe speaker will be Major General (Retd) Michael O’Brien. \nAll are welcome. \nProudly supported by:

DESCRIPTION:To commemorate International Women’s Day\, one of Australia’s leading women-in-war historians\, Dr Kirsty Harris\, will give a presentation on the history behind Violet Town’s new impressive Women in War mural. \n \nThe talk will occur from 11.30 am on Saturday\, March 2 at the Community Complex in Cowslip St\, Violet Town. Morning tea will be served from 11.00 am followed by the presentation. \nErected by the Violet Town RSL Sub Branch\, the mostly black and white mural represents women who served in or supported Australia’s defence forces in time of war. \nDr Harris highlighted that International Women’s Day was the ideal time to reflect on those women who had supported or fought for their country. \n“The common refrain that women replaced men so that they could fight is long gone with female members of the military now commanding ships and flying planes\,” she said. \n“But it is important that we understand the work their forebears did\, and the role they played in creating a permanent place for women in Australia’s military and workforce.” \nThe mural\, painted by recognised mural and silo artist Tim Bowtell\, tells the story of local women connected to Violet Town and district who served\, but set in a national context. It is 17 metres long and nearly 2 metres high. \nWhile there are about 20 local women who have been identified serving in the Australian Army\, Navy\, and Airforce or on the home front\, they served only in World War I and World War II. \nFrom this starting point\, the project team created a mural to represent those who served across the spectrum – from the Anglo-Boer War to the present as well as those who helped on the home front. \n \nThe mural features portraits of both local military women and women at work on the land\, the stage and in factories. \nThe Community Complex is opposite the Ellen Frances – Violet Town Hotel/Motel. \nFor catering purposes\, RSVP by 27 February 2024 to the Violet Town RSL at president@violettownrsl.org.au \n

SUMMARY:Operation Oboe: Australian Amphibious Landings in Borneo\, May-July 1945
DESCRIPTION:A Public Lecture by Major (retd) Paul Handel\, RFD \nIn May 1945 the Australian Army launched three major amphibious assaults in Borneo. The operations were collectively known as “Oboe” and comprised the individual landings on Tarakan\, Brunei and Balikpapan. These operations were considered to be the most efficient and well planned conducted by the Australian Army. \nBorneo is surrounded by a number of waters – the South China Sea\, the Indian Ocean and others between Borneo and New Guinea. It is a volcanic island which has a rocky coastline with some beach areas. The centre of the island is mountainous. This means that farming is difficult\, so oil wells and rubber plantations are the main product of the island. \nBorneo before the Second World War was used by the Dutch for oil production and the British for the production of rubber. The Japanese invasion in 1942 was to their much needed of oil to be used in the mobility of their forces. \nBorneo was home to British and Dutch colonial persons\, as well as a Chinese population. Indigenous people had their origins in Indonesia\, then known as the Netherlands East Indies\, and from Malaya. \nThe landings in Tarakan\, Brunei and Balikpapan\, made little or no contribution to the defeat of Japan. The island had been bypassed in the planning of the Supreme Commander\, South West Pacific Area – General Douglas MacArther – whose eyes were fixed upon the liberation of The Philippines and the subsequent invasion of the Japanese mainland. \nThis presentation will look at the amphibious landings and subsequent land operations in Borneo. \nAbout the Presenter\n \nPaul Handel studied mechanical engineering after leaving school and worked for Email Ltd at Waterloo and Botany in the 1970s. He then joined a German Engineering company\, based in North Sydney\, in 1980. He was involved with large steelworks and open cut mining projects until 2000\, when the company’s operations ceased. In 2004 he joined a division of his former company as the Production and Logistics Manager for the manufacture of overhead travelling cranes\, retiring in 2016. \nHe joined the Citizen Military Forces in 1970\, and was commissioned in 1972 into the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME). A series of postings followed\, including five years as the OC of the LAD/TSS of 1/15 Royal NSW Lancers. Promoted to Major in 1981\, he served on HQ 2 Division Plans Team\, before being posted as OC 103 Field Workshop. Attendance at the Reserve Command Staff College (Senior Course) in 1987 was followed by a posting to the HQ 2nd Division Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. \nIn the middle of 1986\, he was appointed as the RAAC Tank Museum’s Honorary Research Officer. At the end of 1989 he was posted as Research Officer Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) Tank Museum\, and in February 1999 was transferred to the Army History Unit\, and became the Museum Manger of the RAAC Museum\, later Australian Army Tank Museum\, a position he held until August 2012. \nIn September 2016\, he returned to Army Reserve service and undertook a project for Army History Unit involving the sectioning of a Leopard Tank. This project was undertaken by the RAN Fleet Support Unit (SE) at Garden Island in Sydney. The sectioned tank is now an exhibit at the Tank Museum\, Puckapunyal. \nHe is a volunteer at the Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering and the Australian Army Tank Museum. \nHe is the author of three books on Australian armoured history – Fifty Years of the RAAC 1948 to 1998; Dust\, Sand and Jungle – A History of Australian Armour 1927 to 1948; and The Vital Factor – The History of the 2/6th Australian Armoured Regiment 1941 to 1945.

After attaining a Bachelor of Arts\, he attended the Royal Military College Duntroon\, graduating into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1991. During his more than 30 years’ service\, he has served in an extensive range of command appointments. As an Infantry officer he has commanded at all levels within the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) and was the Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion RAR from 2008 to 2009. \nHe was the Commander of the 7th Combat Brigade in Brisbane\, one of Army’s three combat brigades\, from 2020 to 2021. On promotion to Major General in 2022 he was appointed the Head of Armoured Vehicles. DESCRIPTION:The cancelled rescue mission that sacrificed Sandakan POWs to the Death Marches. \nWednesday 21 February 2024 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) \n \n \nThe chain of events that led to the death of over 2\,500 Prisoners of War – one of Australia’s worst wartime tragedies – the cancellation of the rescue mission Operation Kingfisher.\nFinally\, the true story of why the Sandakan POWs of World War II were not rescued despite a fully planned and resourced operation – including men\, aircraft and naval vessels – all equipped to carry out the rescue mission. \nThere have been several published theories on Operation Kingfisher which explore if the plan really existed\, why it was cancelled and who was to blame for its cancellation. For the first time\, Operation Kingfisher analyses the effects government policy and the relationships of Churchill\, Roosevelt and Curtin had on the mission and its final outcome. \nUsing recently released archival documents\, the author uncovers the mistakes made by Allied governments and special forces in Borneo that triggered the Death Marches Number 2 and Number 3. It reveals the mistaken intelligence which caused the cancellation of the rescue mission of the POWs at the Sandakan POW camp – a decision that ultimately resulted in their deaths. \nThe author discloses the actual chain of events that led to the tragic sacrifice of all but six survivors of the Sandakan POW camp. \n \n  \n  \nAbout the presenter\nGary Followill is a successful business owner of an international agricultural import/export company\, turned military historian and writer. \nHe has a lifelong interest in history and\, in 2010\, commenced a Master of Art degree in Military History at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Operation Kingfisher follows years of research at archives in Australia\, Great Britain\, and the United States of America. \nGary uses previously unseen and recently released archival files to find the real story of the cancellation of the Sandakan POW rescue mission – Operation Kingfisher. \nHis findings are completely different from previous theories on the reason over 2\,500 POWs lost their lives on the Death Marches. SUMMARY:Fighting Mac Mckenzie & other ANZAC Chaplains of WW1
DESCRIPTION:The legendary William McKenzie’s tireless work as a Salvation Army Chaplain among the Anzacs in World War I earned him the nickname ‘Fighting Mac’. \n \nOn the outbreak of war McKenzie applied for a chaplaincy immediately and joined the AIF\, attached to the 4th Battalion. He was one of the first chaplains ashore at Gallipoli. He lumped stretchers and carries water for months on end as well as tending the wounded and burying the dead. In France and Belgium he continued to live in the front line with the troops. McKenzie was at Pozieres\, Bullecourt\, Mouquet Farm\, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele. What makes McKenzie’s reputation incredible is that he embodied almost everything that the typical digger loved to hate. He railed against booze\, brothels\, betting and bad language\, and ran frequent evangelistic campaigns for the Anzacs. Despite these apparent disadvantages Fighting Mac was worshipped and revered by the soldiers — becoming the man who best represented the Anzac ideal. In this talk\, historian Dr Daniel Reynaud\, author of The Man the Anzacs Revered: The Legendary William “Fighting Mac” McKenzie\, Anzac Chaplain will tell Fighting Mac’s story and discuss the role and contributions of other Anzac chaplains of the First World War. \n  \nDr Daniel Reynaud is an authority on Australian Great War social history\, publishing books on its cinema (Celluloid Anzacs)\, wartime spirituality (Anzac Spirituality; The Man the Anzacs Revered; The Anzacs\, Religion and God) and Anzac food (The Anzac Table)\, as well as many book chapters and articles on similar themes. He initiated the partial reconstruction of Australia’s first Gallipoli movie (The Hero of the Dardanelles\, 1915/2015)\, and has authored and fronted an award-winning series of documentaries on the Anzacs and religion. He is Emeritus Professor of History at Avondale University. They served in the Atlantic and Arctic convoys\, Combined Operations which included the amphibious landings\, covert operations and mine-sweeping. Ten volunteers distinguished themselves in Rendering Mines Safe. Many towards the end of the war returned to Australia and served with the Royal Australian Navy in South East Asia. As a cohort\, they are probably the most highly decorated Australian servicemen. \nThe Yachties was launched by Vice Admiral Peter Jones AO DSC (Retd)\, President of the Australian Naval Institute at the 2023 Goldrick Seminar in the Adams Auditorium\, Australian Defence Force Academy on 19 October 2023. \nChief of Navy\, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO was Keynote speaker and ensured that he was in photos taken with the author and the Yachties’ families in attendance. \nIt was a very emotional and also poignant occasion for the author and the families concerned. Later that day the Yachties were remembered at the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. The first casualty. Ordinary Seaman Bill McGregor who was killed in an air-raid on 27 April 1941 in Portsmouth Barracks was the Yachtie who represented the volunteers on the day.

For a while we stopped being ordinary blokes and became blood-lusted creatures.’\nMarch\, 1941: 40\,000 Australian and New Zealand troops are rushed to Greece in a desperate attempt to stop the Wehrmacht overrunning the country. Most of them overseas for the first time in their lives\, they seek excitement and adventure. What they get are experiences they could never have imagined. \nThe operation is doomed to fail\, but not before the Aussies and Kiwis succeed in holding up the German advance and evacuating thousands\, mainly to Crete\, where Hitler next sets his sights. As the Nazis assault the island\, they deploy a devastating new weapon of invasion – paratroopers − for the very first time\, meeting desperate resistance as the Allies fight for their lives. \nThis talk will delve into the experiences of the soldiers who fought in the mountains and villages of Greece\, and faced entrapment and death on Crete. Ross is an award-winning historian and biographer\, a renowned storyteller\, an entertaining speaker\, and a longstanding RHSV member. \n \nHis multi-biography Farewell\, Dear People was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History\, and in his new sequel Life So Full of Promise\, Ross has again combined prodigious research and narrative flair in a collection of interwoven family stories about forgotten Australians who had radiant potential. \nThe rich cast of characters in Life So Full of Promise includes a popular doctor\, a brilliant cricketer (Ross played first-grade District cricket in Melbourne)\, and an exceptionally talented barrister who was a potential prime minister. \nWith their families and friends also conspicuous in the narratives\, Life So Full of Promise is a revealing window into this defining era for Australia. It illuminates what the war was like at home and at the sharp end. Life So Full of Promise emulates Farewell\, Dear People in providing insights into the experiences of Australians before\, during and after the war\, whether they were combatants or civilians\, or soldiers’ wives or parents. \nLife So Full of Promise has been shortlisted for the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award.
