DESCRIPTION:Australia had its own Thermopylae. We’ve just forgotten it. \n15 April 2026 – April 2027\nIn 480 BC\, one of history’s most famous battles was fought in central Greece at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae. For three days\, a few thousand Greeks—led by 300 Spartan warriors and their king\, Leonidas I—held back a vast Persian army. Eventually encircled\, the Spartans and their allies were killed. Their stand\, however\, allowed thousands of comrades to escape and fight on\, leaving an enduring example of courage and sacrifice. \nIn April 1941\, on the eve of Anzac Day\, Australian and New Zealand troops returned to this same ground. Outnumbered and under relentless pressure from advancing German forces\, ANZAC units used the rugged terrain of Thermopylae and nearby Brallos Pass to delay the enemy\, enabling thousands of Allied soldiers to withdraw to safety. \nSPARTANS & ANZACS draws a powerful connection between these two defining moments. It reveals how service\, sacrifice and mateship transcend time\, linking ancient warriors with modern soldiers in a shared legacy of courage. \nThis exhibition invites reflection on the enduring values forged in conflict—and how these stories continue to shape the meaning of remembrance today. \nGalleries of Remembrance\nFree entry \nThis exhibition was supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.

SUMMARY:Open House Melbourne - Drill Hall: A Case Study and Conversation on Heritage Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Standing at the corner of William Street and A’Beckett Street\, opposite Flagstaff Gardens\, the former Army Medical Corps Drill Hall is now home to the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n  \nArchitect/Designer: George H Hallendal\, Commonwealth Department of Works 1938\nThe building’s layout reflects the Medical Corps’ operational needs and military hierarchies: the other ranks’ mess is in the basement\, the sergeants’ mess on the first floor\, and the officers’ mess at the William Street end\, with views over Flagstaff Gardens. \nThe two large drill halls either side of the main entrance provided space for medical training\, marching\, and physical exercise\, with a mezzanine gallery above for observation. A former armoury below ground now houses part of the RHSV’s archival collection. \nWhat’s On\n\n\nJoin representatives from the RHSV and Lovell Chen to explore the pleasures\, pains and potential of living with heritage buildings. \nTour the Drill Hall in the company of representatives from the RHSV and the architectural\, heritage and conservation practice Lovell Chen. Passing through spaces not normally open to the public\, visitors will learn about the building’s journey from military medicine to public memory\, and understand how the building’s architecture reflected its function\, including how rank and hierarchy shaped the building’s social geography. \nThey will experience the officers’ and sergeants’ messes\, and the underground armoury that now houses the RHSV’s archives. During the tour\, we will also discuss the ongoing conservation requirements\, how the building might be adapted for contemporary needs\, and how the building might remain a resource for the Victorian community. DESCRIPTION:Three George Cross Heroines of the WW2 Special Operations Executive & The Australian Cruiser Tank – Sentinel \n\nFIRST LECTURE by Virginia Handel starting 10:30AM: Three George Cross Heroines of the WW2 Special Operations Executive \nThe secret organisation the Special Operations Executive (SOE) was formed by the British Government in 1940 to “coordinate\, inspire\, control and assist the nationals of the oppressed countries who must themselves be the direct participants”. \nThirty-nine women of the SOE did extraordinary things in the course of duty. Three of these women were awarded the highest civilian gallantry honour\, the George Cross. They each displayed extreme courage and sacrifice in non-combatant roles as couriers and wireless operators in enemy occupied France: their names were Violette Szabó\, Odette Hallowes and Noor Inayat Khan. \nThis talk will present the history of the George Cross and the stories of these extraordinary women. \nSECOND LECTURE by Major Paul Handel RFD (retd) starting 11:20AM: The AustralianCruiser Tank – Sentinel \nDuring WW2 the Australian Army was unable to obtain armoured vehicles from the United Kingdom because of losses sustained in France. Factories were engaged at capacity in producing vehicles for the British Army. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our author talks series in the AWM theatre\, bringing together some of Australia’s leading voices to talk about their new books. \n\n\n\n\nDiana will talk about her book Code of Silence: How Australian Women helped Win the War. She will share her journey tracking down women who joined the Air Force\, Navy and Army during WWII and what inspired her to try to trace these women so many decades after the war ended. \nThese women worked across the country in a variety of fields; some were sworn to secrecy\, some were not\, yet still these women’s stories and their contributions are little known. By weaving these women’s individual stories together\, Diana uncovered an important chapter of our nation and will discuss why it is important that these women and their achievements are remembered. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the author\nDiana Thorp is a journalist and teacher. After working for The Australian and The Weekend Australian\, she taught journalism at university. \nHer passion for history inspired her to become a teacher\, and she now works at a Melbourne girls’ school. Diana studied history\, with a focus on Australian history and on gender\, at Macquarie University\, and studied ancient Egyptian history at Monash University. SUMMARY:Code Breaking by Australia in World War II and the Coastal Watchers
DESCRIPTION:Online via Zoom.\n \nThis is a specific area of Australian and Allied Naval and Military History that until recently was not widely known about\, due to the secrecy oath that the men and many women who were involved were required to sign. Their stories and their extraordinary contribution they made to winning the war finally in the Pacific\, has only relatively recently been revealed in the public domain. \nIn 1942\, General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia facing a triumphant Japanese advance. Recognizing that intel information would win or lose the Pacific War\, he immediately ordered the creation of what became known as the Central Bureau. This joint American-Australian signals intelligence organisation became the engine room of Allied strategy in conjunction with the Fleet Radio Unit in Melbourne (FRUMEL). \nMacArthur directly relied on this intelligence to leapfrog enemy strongholds and execute his iconic island-hopping campaign including victories by Australian forces. In addition\, the extraordinary story of Captain Eric Nave RAN\, will be covered\, who was a pioneer in breaking Imperial Japanese Navy codes and laying the groundwork for Allied Naval intelligence during World War II. \nThe presentation also links these backroom cryptographic breakthroughs with the extremely heroic\, frontline reconnaissance of the Coastwatchers and who rescued many Allied service personnel\, including a young U.S. Naval Officer who went on to become President of the United States. Operating deep behind enemy lines\, this perilous network provided the real-time naval and aerial warnings that validated Central Bureau’s intercepts. Together\, these two entities formed an invisible shield that saved Australia and secured Allied naval supremacy in the Pacific. \n  \nPresenter – Nigel Rogers \nNigel Rogers spent most of his career\, some thirty years\, with Citi/Citibank\, the US Global Bank Headquartered in New York. Nigel worked in various senior positions and was based in London\, Zürich\, Switzerland\, and Edinburgh\, and he travelled extensively with work throughout the world. Nigel retired and emigrated from the UK to Perth\, Western Australia\, following his marriage to Dr Heather Rogers in July 2012\, after the loss of his first wife. \nIn retirement\, one of Nigel’s main interests is in Naval and Military History. Nigel was elected President of the Naval Historical Society of Australia – WA Chapter\, in September 2020\, following the retirement of Dr George Carter (RAN Rtd.). Nigel has now stepped down from that role as President of the WA Chapter. \nNigel was the `Resident Historian’ at Capital Community Radio in Perth: https://capitalcommunityradio.com/interviews.html and undertook research to give Naval and Military History talks on the radio\, as well as at meetings of various Societies and Institutions. Nigel is a Knight of Justice and the Almoner of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller in the WA Priory\, whose main objective is to raise funds for the homeless in Perth\, WA. \nNigel’s interest in Naval History stems from inheriting his father’s collection of Naval History books and hearing his father’s stories about his Royal Navy Service throughout World War II\, that included serving in the Atlantic\, the Mediterranean and on the island of Malta during the Siege in World War II.

DESCRIPTION:he Anglo-German Naval Agreements of 1935 and 1937 are among the most misunderstood and misrepresented elements of the interwar naval arms control architecture.  Far from being the short-sighted acts of appeasement they are commonly portrayed to be\, these agreements represented a logical and sensible approach by Britain to resolve the seemingly impossible strategic dilemmas facing the British Empire at that time\, and to shape their environment by directing German naval development in a direction least-threatening to British interests. \nThis presentation will explore the history of the agreements\, starting with the breakdown of the Versailles restrictions following the failure of the 1932 World Disarmament Conference.  It will include the extensive negotiations that took place following the 1935 agreement to convert a brief and ambiguous Exchange of Notes into a practical arrangement\, as well as the protracted negotiations conducted with Germany (and the parallel interdependent talks with the USSR) to reach a compromise that would allow the extension of the 1936 London Naval Treaty provisions to Germany.  Finally\, this presentation will address the progressive deconstruction of the agreements as Europe descended towards World War Two. \nAlong the way\, this presentation will explore a number of other aspects of the agreements\, such as why\, after the ravages wrought by U-boats in World War I\, Great Britain allowed an exception which permitted Germany to build up to parity in submarines\, what these potential enemies hoped to achieve from the agreements\, and how the agreements contained the seeds of their own demise. \n Presenter – \nDr David Chessum served for 23 years as a Weapon Engineering Officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy\, including two tours of duty as a Head of Department on Leander class frigates\, and attendance at the Australian Command and Staff College in Canberra.  Since leaving the RNZN David has been employed as a Chartered Professional Engineer in both consulting and Government roles\, with a key focus on naval engineering and system safety. \nIn parallel with his engineering career\, David has compiled a comprehensive academic record\, completing five degrees in a variety of disciplines.  Since 2004\, David has focused on research into the Interwar Naval Arms Control process\, and the interactions between that process and naval strategy\, naval architecture\, and force structure.  This research\, which has included extensive archival research in the United Kingdom\, US\, France\, Australia and New Zealand\, is the foundation of his PhD thesis completed at the University of New South Wales.  His current major project is the transformation of that thesis into a book for publication. \nDavid is Vice-President of the Nepean Naval and Maritime Museum\, and a volunteer tour guide on ex-HMAS Vampire\, and ex-HMAS Onslow at the Australian National Maritime Museum. \nDetail –\nDate and Time:1100\, Wednesday 14th. DESCRIPTION:Australia had its own Thermopylae. We’ve just forgotten it. \n15 April 2026 – April 2027\nIn 480 BC\, one of history’s most famous battles was fought in central Greece at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae. For three days\, a few thousand Greeks—led by 300 Spartan warriors and their king\, Leonidas I—held back a vast Persian army. Eventually encircled\, the Spartans and their allies were killed. Their stand\, however\, allowed thousands of comrades to escape and fight on\, leaving an enduring example of courage and sacrifice. \nIn April 1941\, on the eve of Anzac Day\, Australian and New Zealand troops returned to this same ground. Outnumbered and under relentless pressure from advancing German forces\, ANZAC units used the rugged terrain of Thermopylae and nearby Brallos Pass to delay the enemy\, enabling thousands of Allied soldiers to withdraw to safety. \nSPARTANS & ANZACS draws a powerful connection between these two defining moments. It reveals how service\, sacrifice and mateship transcend time\, linking ancient warriors with modern soldiers in a shared legacy of courage. \nThis exhibition invites reflection on the enduring values forged in conflict—and how these stories continue to shape the meaning of remembrance today. \nGalleries of Remembrance\nFree entry \nThis exhibition was supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.

SUMMARY:85 Years On – Remembering the Siege of Tobruk - One Day Conference
DESCRIPTION:‘The troops at Tobruk are caught like rats in a trap\, would live like rats and die like rats.’ (Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw 1941) \n \n \n \nTo the thousands of Allied soldiers trapped in the Libyan coastal city of Tobruk in early 1941\, this derogatory broadcast stirred a feeling of defiance deep within them\, and soon the Australians christened themselves ‘The Rats of Tobruk.’ \nFor 242 days from 10 April to 7 December 1941\, these Allied forces successfully held a vital deep-water port against the German and Italian armies\, thereby preventing a Nazi advance toward Egypt and the Suez Canal. The backbone of the defence was the 9th Australian Division and the 18th Brigade\, as well as units from Great Britain\, India\, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Ships from the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy co-operated with aircraft from the RAF and RAAF\, to keep supply routes and air defences open. Meanwhile\, the Allied land forces faced concerted attacks from the German Afrika Corps and from Axis air and naval forces. \n2026 marks the 85th Anniversary of the Siege and with no surviving participants still alive\, a new generation is taking the opportunity to re-examine the Siege at a One-Day Conference jointly sponsored by Military History and Heritage Victoria (MHHV) and the Rats of Tobruk Association. High profile speakers and subject experts will review key aspects of the Siege\, and in a panel discussion seek to answer the key question of why the seemingly superior Axis forces were unsuccessful in recapturing Tobruk. \nThe Conference is to be staged on Saturday 14 November at the Headquarters of the Rats of Tobruk Association in Melbourne. In addition to many relics and artefacts of the Siege on show in the Hall\, the venue is complemented by a Special Display created to mark the 85th Anniversary. \n85 Years On – Remembering the Siege of Tobruk is the 18th One Day Conference staged by MHHV since 2010 and is one not to be missed. \n  \nMembers of the RATS OF TOBRUK ASSOCIATION should register for the conference directly with the Rats of Tobruk Association Melbourne. \nTickets  \nAll in person conference tickets include a Free Parking Pass.
