SUMMARY:The Evolution of Australia’s Security and Intelligence Organisations
DESCRIPTION:Dr John Blaxland\, presented by The Royal United Services Institute of Victoria\nDr John Blaxland writes about military history\, intelligence and  security and Asia-Pacific affairs. He holds a PhD in War Studies and is a  graduate of the Royal Thai Army Command and Staff College (dux of  foreign students) and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon. Dr Blaxland  has been to 37 countries. In addition to English\, he speaks Thai\, and  Spanish. \nHis publications include Strategic Cousins(2006)\, Revisiting Counterinsurgency (2006)\, Information era Manoeuvre (2002)\, Signals (1999) and Organising an Army (1989). His forthcoming book is entitled The Australian Army From Whitlam to Howard. \nPrior to moving to the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre Dr  Blaxland spent nearly 30 years in the Australian Army. In his last  military posting he served as Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand  and Burma from 2008-2010. In 2006-7 he was the Chief Staff Officer for  Joint Intelligence Operations (J2)\, at Headquarters Joint Operations  Command\, with responsibility for intelligence support to Australian  military operations world-wide. Prior to that he held a number of  operations and intelligence-related postings including to Australia’s  Defence Intelligence Organisation\, the Defence Signals Directorate and  as Intelligence Officer for the deployment to East Timor with INTERFET  in 1999. He also served with the US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in  Washington\, DC\, deploying on a humanitarian assistance operation with  the US Marine Corps. SUMMARY:Art Show: Conflict and Compassion: Art From Peacekeeping and Active Operations.
DESCRIPTION:Conflict & Compassion brings together Artists and Soldiers alike;  exploring through the medium of art their experiences of operations. This  exhibition is held to coincide with the historic celebrations to commemorate the  cessation of a permanent Army presence at Fort Queenscliff. Thousands of people  from across the region are anticipated to attend the event. \n \nAs the title  suggests\, Conflict & Compassion explores the ADF involvement in active and  peacekeeping operations\, at home and abroad. Throughout Australian military  history there has been a time honoured tradition of soldiers depicting war  through art. This exhibition offers an exciting opportunity for  current and retired Defence Force  soldiers\, sailors and airmen to showcase their personal  experience of recent operations in an exhibition to be held at Fort Queenscliff  on 17 Nov 12. The art may take many forms (painting\, scultpure\,  photographic). DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Trafalgar (21st Oct.1805) was the most decisive British Naval Victory of the Napoleonic¬† wars.\nTwenty seven R N Ships of the line\, lead by Vice-Admiral of the White  Viscount Horatio Nelson KB in HMS VICTORY\, defeated 33 French/Spanish  Ships of the line off the south west coast of Spain\, just west of Cape  Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost 22 ships without a single  British ship being lost. \nHaving visited HMS VICTORY seven times over the past 31 years\, I  never cease to be fascinated by this living monument to British  sea-power. We have obtained a DVD from the ‘National Museum of the Royal  Navy’¬† entitled ‘A walk-through tour of HMS VICTORY’ which we would  like to share with you on October 22nd. \nAlso at our meeting we have our AGM and ‘Show and Tell’. The ‘Show  and Tell’ segment¬† gives you 5 minutes or so to show us one of your  Naval treasures and tell your story to like-minded enthusiasts of all  things ‘Naval’. This can be a rather humorous finale to our AGM meeting  each year\, you can imagine some of the comments from the floor! \nJoin us at the Melbourne Naval Centre\, October 22nd 2010.Building is  open from approximately 1830 to give you time in the library\, and our  meeting starts at 1930.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1912-1928
DESCRIPTION:HMAS Melbourne (I) was Australia’s first light cruiser\, launched at Birkenhead in 1912.  She arrived in Melbourne on 26 March 1913 and took the crest and motto of the City of Melbourne – ‘Gathers Strength as She Goes’.  Melbourne was in service until 1928 when she was returned to England to be scrapped. She had been put together hurriedly during the Anglo-German naval race and was worked hard during her years of service\, seeing hundreds of thousands of miles of cruising in war and peace and innumerable refits during that time. During WWI Melbourne saw service in the islands in 1914 when she captured and destroyed the German radio station at Nauru\, escorted the fleet of the 1st AIF to Colombo\, joined the RN’s West Indies Squadron (based in Jamaica and Bermuda) bottling up German colliers and merchant ships in neutral ports from Brazil to New York as well as searched for German raiders. In July 1916 she was transferred to the North Sea where Melbourne joined the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron as part of the Grand Fleet and took part in sweeps\, patrols and convoy escort duties until the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918.\nDuring the 1920s Melbourne served as flagship on several occasions and engaged in a wide range of cruises to the south-east and south west Pacific and New Zealand\, during which time it was responsible\, in a superb demonstration of seamanship and the courage of its crew\, for the rescue of the crew of an American schooner at the height of a hurricane in January 1922.  Melbourne was described as a ‘forgotten cruiser’\, in part because she lived under the shadow of her more famous sister-ship\, HMAS Sydney (I).  But Melbourne gave sterling and steady service to the RAN and the nation. Its battle honours Rabaul 1914 and North Sea 1916-1918 hardly do justice to its work or the work of its crews over the period.  Ten officers and men who served on the Melbourne during WWI – from Australia\, New Zealand\, England and Scotland\, paid the supreme sacrifice. DESCRIPTION:Major planning is complete for the Fly In\nto be held on Saturday October 20th at the Nhill aerodrome from 12  noon to 4pm.¬† Main features will be the attendance of¬† a member of the  Roulettes team \,a Mustang\, Wirraway\,¬† Winjeel\, Trojan\, several Tiger  Moths and a number of other aircraft of WWII vintage . Static displays  will include examples of the restoration of our Avro Anson and other  aircraft engines and parts. \nIf you are intending to come you may like to make it a ‘long  weekend’. The Nhill A&P Society Show will be held on Thursday Oct  18th and the following day there will be a number of activities held in  and around the town. Transport and accommodation will be available. \nOn Saturday evening\, after the Fly- In\, an evening meal will be  available for pilots and partners where there will be a special  presentation by Tony Schwerdt who organised the amazing recovery of the  first Australian-built Mustang from the Atomic test site at Emu in the  Great Victoria Desert. DESCRIPTION:Writing War in the Twentieth Century. ‚ÄúBeyond Glory?‚Äù is the third in a series of lectures presented by Professor Winter exploring the cultural history of the Great War. \nProfessor Winter’s previous lectures have addressed art and film. \nIn ‚ÄúBeyond Glory?‚Äù Professor Winter focuses on the literary responses to the Great War. \n‚ÄúWar is simply too frightful\, too chaotic\, too arbitrary\, too bizarre\, too uncanny\, a set of events and images to enable us to grasp what it is without filters. We have to put them on because\, without them\, we will be blinded by the searing light of war. Literature is one such filter.‚Äù \nProfessor Winter holds the Charles J. Stille Chair in History at Yale University. He is the author of a dozen books and the winner of an Emmy award for his acclaimed television series\, ‘The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century’ and is also General Editor of the forthcoming Cambridge history of the Great War. \nProfessor Winter is currently a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. DESCRIPTION:Neville Rutledge was a navigator/wireless operator with 36 Squadron RAAF.\nHe served in the South-West Pacific during 1944-45 in C-47s\, and will talk about his experiences\, and about the history of the famous Douglas type in which he flew. \nMeetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East\, in the auditorium. DESCRIPTION:The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS MELBOURNE (I)  Australia’s first light cruiser arrived in Melbourne in March 1913.\n \nServing until 1928\, it received the battle honours of Rabaul 1914 and North Sea 1916-1918. \nMELBOURNE  was a work horse of the RAN\, somewhat overshadowed by its sister ship SYDNEY but won accolades for the hazardous rescue at the height of a gale of the crew of sinking schooner HELEN B STERLING in 1922. \nThe presentation will be by Andrew Kilsby\, who along with  co-author CDR Greg Swinden RAN\, is writing a new history of the MELBOURNE to be launched at its centenary commemorative exhibition in March 2013.

This talk will therefore not retell the story of what happened at Fromelles on that July evening. It will instead analyse various facets of the planning and execution of the attack\, and set them within the context of the tactical doctrine that guided the operations of the British Expeditionary Force at the time. DESCRIPTION:Deakin University Cultural Heritage Seminar by Dr Marina Larsson\nThe Centenary of World War One (2014-18) will be a significant¬†international event. Known as the ‘Anzac Centenary’ in Australia\, this¬†anniversary will see a renewed focus on preserving the heritage of war and¬†telling the histories of this era. Dr Marina Larsson will present a¬†discussion of war-related heritage in Victoria and the issues related to¬†its identification\, preservation and interpretation. What will the role of¬†heritage professionals be? What kinds of histories will find a voice? \nDr Larsson is an award-winning historian who has lectured at La¬†Trobe and Monash Universities. She currently works as Senior Policy¬†Officer\, Veterans Heritage in the Veterans Unit\, Department of Planning and¬†Community Development. Her book Shattered Anzacs: Living with the Scars of¬†War (2009) was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Award for Australian¬†History and the Asher Literary Award. In 2008 Marina received the¬†Australian Historical Association Serle award for the Best Postgraduate¬†Thesis in Australian History and in 2011 she released Anzac Legacies:¬†Australians and the Aftermath of War co-edited with Martin Crotty. DESCRIPTION:An inaugural Commemoration Service at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.\nAn inaugural Commemoration Service is planned for Saturday 14th July 2102 at 1400hrs for 1430 hrs\, at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance\, to remember the service and sacrifice of the RAAF (and other allied Air Forces) who served in the secret “Special Duties” (SD) Squadrons based at RAF Tempsford\, in Bedfordshire UK\, during WWII. \nMany people still are unaware of the existence and contribution to the war effort of these two secret\, √©lite and multinational RAF SD Squadrons\, No. 138 and No. 161\, based at RAF Tempsford (also later joined by two USAAF “Carpetbagger” Squadrons). This Shrine Commemoration has developed from a Submission to the original “Anzac Centenary Commission” of the DVA\, back in August 2010. \nFor those wishing to read further background to this\, go to www.anzaccentenary.gov.au \, click on “Submissions”\, then on “Submissions during August 2010” and scroll down to No. 47 \nThis is an open and cordial invitation to all members of the MHHV Victoria (and any other interested MHSA members interstate?) to attend this Ceremony. SUMMARY:Sailors\, Ships and Imperial Defence: The early Australian Naval Forces to 1922 One Day Conference at the RHSV
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria will hold a one day conference at the RHSV on Saturday 27 April 2013\, between 9 am and 4.30 pm:\nThe conference will be opened by Vice Admiral Ray Griggs\, AO CSC RAN \, Chief of Navy (TBC) and the keynote speaker will be Dr David Stevens\, Director Strategic and Historical Studies\, Sea Power Centre\, Canberra. \n  \nFrom settlement in 1788 to 1859\, Australia depended on units detached from the Royal Navy based in Sydney to provide Naval defence. The Australian colonial navies\, led mostly by the Victorian Navy\, established the beginnings of an Australian naval tradition\, including active service in New Zealand and China. \nAustralia became a federation in 1901 and the ex-colonial personnel and materiel from the new States were transferred to the Commonwealth Department of Defence. The initial naval force consisted of 14 naval vessels and 239 career navy men. \nAt an Imperial Conference held in 1909\, a decision was made to establish the Australian Fleet Unit. \nAt the outbreak of WWI in 1914\, the Australian Fleet comprised a battle cruiser\, six light cruisers\, six destroyers\, two submarines and numerous support and ancillary craft. SUMMARY:Fear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne (1912-1928) Exhibition at the RHSV
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and its supporter\, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV)\, will hold a major Exhibition at the RHSV \n\n \n  \nThe Exhibition is to commemorate the centenary of the arrival of Australia’s first light cruiser\, HMAS Melbourne\, in Port Phillip Bay\, on 26 March 1913\, as part of the new Royal Australian Navy.  HMAS Melbourne took the crest of the City of Melbourne and its credo ‘Gather Strength as She Goes’. \nThe Melbourne\, a 5\,600 ton ship with eight 6-inch guns\, served  the RAN from its commissioning in England in 1912 until its  decommissioning\, also in England in 1928.  She saw war service in the  operations against the German colonies in the SW Pacific in 1914\,  escorted the 1st AIF fleet from Albany\, WA; saw service with  the West Indies Squadron in 1915-1916; then served with the North Sea  Fleet in 1916-1918. In 1922 the Melbourne was involved in a dramatic  rescue of the crew of an American schooner in the Tasman Sea\, at the  height of a hurricane. \nThese events and other cruises of the Melbourne will be  highlighted with artefacts of the ship and crew memorabilia drawn from  the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian National Maritime Museum\,  Museum Victoria\, Monash University\, the Museum of HMAS Cerberus\, and  from individual donations. \n \nThe official opening of the Exhibition will be held at the RHSV on 26  March 2013 at 6 pm\, open to MHHV and RHSV members and descendants of  the crew of HMAS Melbourne.  The opening will see the launch of a new history of the Melbourne – The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1912-1928\, by historians Andrew Kilsby and Commander Greg Swinden\, RAN.\nFollowing the official opening\, a free public lecture will be held on  the subject of the Exhibition on 26 March 2013 at 7 pm at the RHSV\,  presented by the authors of the history. \nIndependent curator Cooee History and Heritage has been appointed to produce the exhibition pro bono with support from MHHV\, RHSV and Deakin University volunteers.\nThe Exhibition is sponsored by the Port of Melbourne Corporation\, Navy Health\, and the Melbourne Naval Centre. \nEntry is free to MHHV and RHSV members and Port of Melbourne Corporation employees\, otherwise entry is by donation of $5 per head. \n \nHMAS Melbourne arrived in Port Phillip Bay on 26 March 1913.    It was the prequel to the RAN Fleet entering Sydney Harbour on 4  October 1913.  Led by the battle cruiser HMAS Australia\, Melbourne led the remainder of the Fleet into the harbour for the Fleet review.  Between 3-5 October 2013 there will be an International Fleet Review to commemorate this historic event.  See the Prequel at the Exhibition РFear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928 at the RHSV over 18 February – 1 May2013\, to commemorate 100 years since Australia’s first cruiser arrived in Melbourne. \nFor School Groups\, see Teacher Guide here

SUMMARY:Seminar: Wartime ‘Census’: The University of Melbourne Social Survey (1941-1943)
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Social Survey was Australia’s largest non-government survey falling between the two official Government censuses of 1933 and 1946.\nConceived and led by University of Melbourne economist Wilfred Prest\, the survey interviewed a sample consisting of 7300 households occupying 6500 addresses in more than 20 suburbs across Melbourne. Not only did the survey fill a gap in the census\, it served as a model for research intended to inform social and economic policy. The records of the survey preserved in the University of Melbourne Archives provide an insight into the history of social surveys as well as a detailed picture of living conditions in wartime Melbourne. Subsequent researchers have found the survey to be of enormous use and interest for historical and social study of the period.
