DESCRIPTION:An inaugural Commemoration Service at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.\nAn inaugural Commemoration Service is planned for Saturday 14th July 2102 at 1400hrs for 1430 hrs\, at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance\, to remember the service and sacrifice of the RAAF (and other allied Air Forces) who served in the secret “Special Duties” (SD) Squadrons based at RAF Tempsford\, in Bedfordshire UK\, during WWII. \nMany people still are unaware of the existence and contribution to the war effort of these two secret\, √©lite and multinational RAF SD Squadrons\, No. 138 and No. 161\, based at RAF Tempsford (also later joined by two USAAF “Carpetbagger” Squadrons). This Shrine Commemoration has developed from a Submission to the original “Anzac Centenary Commission” of the DVA\, back in August 2010. \nFor those wishing to read further background to this\, go to www.anzaccentenary.gov.au \, click on “Submissions”\, then on “Submissions during August 2010” and scroll down to No. 47 \nThis is an open and cordial invitation to all members of the MHHV Victoria (and any other interested MHSA members interstate?) to attend this Ceremony. SUMMARY:Sailors\, Ships and Imperial Defence: The early Australian Naval Forces to 1922 One Day Conference at the RHSV
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria will hold a one day conference at the RHSV on Saturday 27 April 2013\, between 9 am and 4.30 pm:\nThe conference will be opened by Vice Admiral Ray Griggs\, AO CSC RAN \, Chief of Navy (TBC) and the keynote speaker will be Dr David Stevens\, Director Strategic and Historical Studies\, Sea Power Centre\, Canberra. \n  \nFrom settlement in 1788 to 1859\, Australia depended on units detached from the Royal Navy based in Sydney to provide Naval defence. The Australian colonial navies\, led mostly by the Victorian Navy\, established the beginnings of an Australian naval tradition\, including active service in New Zealand and China. \nAustralia became a federation in 1901 and the ex-colonial personnel and materiel from the new States were transferred to the Commonwealth Department of Defence. The initial naval force consisted of 14 naval vessels and 239 career navy men. \nAt an Imperial Conference held in 1909\, a decision was made to establish the Australian Fleet Unit. \nAt the outbreak of WWI in 1914\, the Australian Fleet comprised a battle cruiser\, six light cruisers\, six destroyers\, two submarines and numerous support and ancillary craft. SUMMARY:Fear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne (1912-1928) Exhibition at the RHSV
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and its supporter\, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV)\, will hold a major Exhibition at the RHSV \n\n \n  \nThe Exhibition is to commemorate the centenary of the arrival of Australia’s first light cruiser\, HMAS Melbourne\, in Port Phillip Bay\, on 26 March 1913\, as part of the new Royal Australian Navy.  HMAS Melbourne took the crest of the City of Melbourne and its credo ‘Gather Strength as She Goes’. \nThe Melbourne\, a 5\,600 ton ship with eight 6-inch guns\, served  the RAN from its commissioning in England in 1912 until its  decommissioning\, also in England in 1928.  She saw war service in the  operations against the German colonies in the SW Pacific in 1914\,  escorted the 1st AIF fleet from Albany\, WA; saw service with  the West Indies Squadron in 1915-1916; then served with the North Sea  Fleet in 1916-1918. SUMMARY:Seminar: Wartime ‘Census’: The University of Melbourne Social Survey (1941-1943)
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Social Survey was Australia’s largest non-government survey falling between the two official Government censuses of 1933 and 1946.\nConceived and led by University of Melbourne economist Wilfred Prest\, the survey interviewed a sample consisting of 7300 households occupying 6500 addresses in more than 20 suburbs across Melbourne. Not only did the survey fill a gap in the census\, it served as a model for research intended to inform social and economic policy. The records of the survey preserved in the University of Melbourne Archives provide an insight into the history of social surveys as well as a detailed picture of living conditions in wartime Melbourne. Subsequent researchers have found the survey to be of enormous use and interest for historical and social study of the period. SUMMARY:It Wasn’t a Holiday Camp! Contrasting views of Italian wartime internment in Australia
DESCRIPTION:Part of the History & The Meaning of Things 2012 Seminar Series on History & Material Culture.\nOn 10th June 1940\, Fascist Italy declared war on Britain. The following day authorities began rounding up thousands of Italian men across Australian capital cities and regional towns. There were approximately 33\,000 Italian-born migrants in Australia at the time. \nOf an estimated 5\,000 Italians interned\, approximately 300 were from Victoria\, almost 1\,000 came from New South Wales\, 2\,700 from Queensland\, about 200 from South Australia\, and more than 1\,200 originated from Western Australia. This talk will present an overview of the contrasting life and times of Italian internees in two internment camps: Tatura in Victoria and Loveday in South Australia. Daily life in both camps could not have been more diverse. While Tatura was primarily used for interned families\, Loveday was a male-only camp with over 4\,000 inmates from many nations. While life at Loveday was modelled on prison routine\, Tatura was run more like a military hostel. DESCRIPTION:Victorian Collections is a new free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to collecting organisations throughout Victoria\, including RSLs and military heritage groups.\nOver the coming months workshops for volunteers to learn this cataloguing system will be held across Victoria Рin Melbourne\, Sale\, Bright\, Port Fairy\, Warrnambool\, St Arnaud and Mt Helen. \nVictorian Collections is a free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to all types of collecting organisations throughout Victoria. \nThe Victorian Collections cataloguing workshop is a complete day of training from 10am Р4pm. There is a morning of basic collection management training and after lunch each attendee will photograph and catalogue an item from their organisation’s collection using the Victorian Collections system. Each organisation should aim to send at least 2 or 3 people to the training. This will spread the load of cataloguing\, distribute the experience and make cataloguing an easier and more pleasant experience. \nPlease bring a collection item for each person attending the training session. \nTraining is provided by Peta Knott\, Project Manager for Victorian Collections\, MA (Vic) \nMorning tea and lunch will be provided. DESCRIPTION:In 1915\, Albert Borella journeyed through 1\,000 kilometres of Northern Territory’s outback from Tennant Creek to Darwin to enlist in World War I. He fought at Gallipoli and the Western Front; was wounded\, commissioned on the battlefield\, and awarded the Victoria Cross\, the highest honour for valour in combat.\nFrom 20 February to 3 March 2015\, The Borella Ride will travel from Tennant Creek to Darwin symbolically retracing Borella’s trip\, which included walking\, horse riding\, hitching a ride on a horse drawn mail cart and a train ride. Albert Borella’s grandson\, Richard Chalmers-Borella\, will be the representative Borella Rider during the journey and he will be joined by three companion Riders. \nThe Borella Ride will visit towns and communities along the Stuart Highway\, with a range of activities planned for each community including a travelling exhibition\, community receptions and BBQs\, campfire talks\, ceremonial and educational activities. \nThe Borella Ride is the Northern Territory Government’s flagship Anzac Centenary activity\, supported by the Australian Government.

DESCRIPTION:An international conference hosted by the Australian War Memorial and the Australian National University Llewellyn Hall\, Australian National University\, Canberra.\nThe Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was one of the most controversial campaigns of the First World War. The major allied powers aimed at shortening the war by eliminating Turkey\, but the campaign ended in complete failure and over 140\,000 allied casualties. \nOne hundred years later\, the campaign still generates mythology and debate over the strategy and planning\, the real or illusory opportunities for success\, and the causes of failure. The campaign involved military and naval forces from many nations around the world\, and the lingering memory of Gallipoli continues to play a central role in the national narratives of Australia\, New Zealand\, and Turkey. \nOn the centenary of Gallipoli\, Australia’s national memorial and museum of war joins with Australia’s national university to host this major international conference.
