Sir Louis Hamilton\, Chief of Australian Naval Staff. 1945\nDetail: The History of the Royal Australian Navy is an extraordinary story of drama\, politics\, courage\, triumph and tragedy. Paralleling the Australian national experience\, it spans the years since European settlement in 1788\, through Federation and World Wars\, through social and geopolitical upheaval\, through technological revolution…. through to the present day Australia and the role of the modern fleet. \nWe will view the first two episodes of this excellent series: Episode 1 Traces the genesis of the Australian Navy through colonial days up to the beginning of WW I\, and Episode 2 covers our involvement in the World conflict. We operated in the North Sea\, Mediterranean\, Pacific\, the Far East and Indian Oceans. DESCRIPTION:Victorian Collections is a new free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to collecting organisations throughout Victoria\, including RSLs and military heritage groups.\nOver the coming months workshops for volunteers to learn this cataloguing system will be held across Victoria Рin Melbourne\, Sale\, Bright\, Port Fairy\, Warrnambool\, St Arnaud and Mt Helen. \nVictorian Collections is a free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to all types of collecting organisations throughout Victoria. \nThe Victorian Collections cataloguing workshop is a complete day of training from 10am Р4pm. There is a morning of basic collection management training and after lunch each attendee will photograph and catalogue an item from their organisation’s collection using the Victorian Collections system. Each organisation should aim to send at least 2 or 3 people to the training. This will spread the load of cataloguing\, distribute the experience and make cataloguing an easier and more pleasant experience. \nPlease bring a collection item for each person attending the training session. \nTraining is provided by Peta Knott\, Project Manager for Victorian Collections\, MA (Vic) \nMorning tea and lunch will be provided. Patriotic young men all over the world lined up to join the fight ‚Äì including hundreds of Indigenous Australians. \nShunned and downtrodden in their own country ‚Äì and in fact banned by their own government from serving in the military ‚Äì Aboriginal men had to hide their heritage to enlist. Undaunted\, these bold souls took up arms to defend the free world in its time of greatest need. For them\, facing the horror of war on a Gallipoli beach was an escape from the shackles of racism at home\, at a time when Aboriginal people stood by\, segregated\, unable to vote\, unable to act as their children were ripped from them. SUMMARY:The Borella Ride
DESCRIPTION:In 1915\, Albert Borella journeyed through 1\,000 kilometres of Northern Territory’s outback from Tennant Creek to Darwin to enlist in World War I. He fought at Gallipoli and the Western Front; was wounded\, commissioned on the battlefield\, and awarded the Victoria Cross\, the highest honour for valour in combat.\nFrom 20 February to 3 March 2015\, The Borella Ride will travel from Tennant Creek to Darwin symbolically retracing Borella’s trip\, which included walking\, horse riding\, hitching a ride on a horse drawn mail cart and a train ride. Albert Borella’s grandson\, Richard Chalmers-Borella\, will be the representative Borella Rider during the journey and he will be joined by three companion Riders. \nThe Borella Ride will visit towns and communities along the Stuart Highway\, with a range of activities planned for each community including a travelling exhibition\, community receptions and BBQs\, campfire talks\, ceremonial and educational activities. \nThe Borella Ride is the Northern Territory Government’s flagship Anzac Centenary activity\, supported by the Australian Government.

DESCRIPTION:An international conference hosted by the Australian War Memorial and the Australian National University Llewellyn Hall\, Australian National University\, Canberra.\nThe Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was one of the most controversial campaigns of the First World War. The major allied powers aimed at shortening the war by eliminating Turkey\, but the campaign ended in complete failure and over 140\,000 allied casualties. \nOne hundred years later\, the campaign still generates mythology and debate over the strategy and planning\, the real or illusory opportunities for success\, and the causes of failure. The campaign involved military and naval forces from many nations around the world\, and the lingering memory of Gallipoli continues to play a central role in the national narratives of Australia\, New Zealand\, and Turkey. \nOn the centenary of Gallipoli\, Australia’s national memorial and museum of war joins with Australia’s national university to host this major international conference. DESCRIPTION:The enduring fascination with Gallipoli is explored in this exclusive exhibition which presents some 100 items recovered from the Joint Historical and Archaeological Survey of the Gallipoli battlefield (2010 – 14) supported by the Australian\, New Zealand and Turkish governments. DESCRIPTION:MHHV and the National Vietnam Veterans Museum (NVVM) will hold a one day conference at the NVVM on Saturday 20 April 2013\, between 9 am and 4.30pm: \n \n\n\nThe conference will be opened by Dr Peter Edwards\, AM\, Official Historian for Australia’s involvement in South East Asian conflict 1948-1975\, and the keynote speaker will be Air Vice Marshal Bob Treloar AO (RAAF Rtd). \nThe war in Vietnam has left indelible impressions upon our society.  One of the great icons from that decade-long conflict was the helicopter.  It was the first time that helicopters were used extensively in a war and as the war progressed the roles employed by helicopters expanded dramatically.  Whether operating as slicks (troop carriers)\, gunships\, medevac\, heavy lift\, observation or aerial trucks\, ‘choppers’ became the ubiquitous symbol of the war in Vietnam Рand essential for the conduct of the war.  No-one who served in Vietnam left without some experience of helicopters\, directly or indirectly. \nWhat Australian helicopter units served in Vietnam and what were their stories?  How did the Australian and New Zealand air and ground crew and performance compare to others? How did they adapt to new helicopter types and tactics? How did helicopters help or hinder our operations in Vietnam? What was the impact on casualty evacuation and survival rates for wounded?  What did we learn from the helicopter experience? DESCRIPTION:The end of 2014 has marked the conclusion of Operation SLIPPER\, Australia’s military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan\, and the International Coalition against Terrorism mission across Afghanistan and the Middle East\, which commenced in October 2001. To mark the end of Operation SLIPPER a parade will be held on Saturday\, 21 March 2015 in Melbourne\, followed by a commemoration service at the Shine of Remembrance.\nParticipation in the commemoration activities is limited to Defence and former Defence personnel who deployed on Operation SLIPPER\, Operation PATATE II and Operation HERRICK\, and Other Government Agency personnel who deployed in support of the Whole of Government commitment to combat terrorism in the Middle East. Allied nations’ veterans and locally engaged employees who served as part of this operation are welcome to participate. \nDate: Saturday\, 21 March 2015 \nTime: 10:00 am (marching personnel are to form up at 08:45 am in the vicinity of Linlithgow Avenue and St Kilda Road). \nMarch route: St Kilda Road South Bound service lane. \nOrder of events: This event will be in two parts\, first a parade along St Kilda Road heading south towards the Shrine of Remembrance with a colour party\, guard and band.
