DESCRIPTION:The end of 2014 has marked the conclusion of Operation SLIPPER\, Australia’s military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan\, and the International Coalition against Terrorism mission across Afghanistan and the Middle East\, which commenced in October 2001. To mark the end of Operation SLIPPER a parade will be held on Saturday\, 21 March 2015 in Melbourne\, followed by a commemoration service at the Shine of Remembrance.\nParticipation in the commemoration activities is limited to Defence and former Defence personnel who deployed on Operation SLIPPER\, Operation PATATE II and Operation HERRICK\, and Other Government Agency personnel who deployed in support of the Whole of Government commitment to combat terrorism in the Middle East. Allied nations’ veterans and locally engaged employees who served as part of this operation are welcome to participate. \nDate: Saturday\, 21 March 2015 \nTime: 10:00 am (marching personnel are to form up at 08:45 am in the vicinity of Linlithgow Avenue and St Kilda Road). \nMarch route: St Kilda Road South Bound service lane. \nOrder of events: This event will be in two parts\, first a parade along St Kilda Road heading south towards the Shrine of Remembrance with a colour party\, guard and band. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Hawthorn Tram Depot are proud to announce ‘Tramway Anzacs’\, an exhibition at the Melbourne Tram Museum @ Hawthorn Depot\, honouring the 538 employees of Melbourne tramways who volunteered for active service in the First World War.\nConceived to commemorate the centenary of the landing at Anzac Cove\, the exhibition is focused on the impact of the First World War on Australian society\, and on the lives of the tramway men who served – the 86 who died on active service\, and all those who returned. \nThe official opening ceremony for Tramway Anzacs will be at 3pm on Saturday 11 April 2015. \nThe exhibition will be mounted in the main museum gallery\, and consists of multimedia displays\, posters and contemporary artefacts related to Australian participation in the First World War. \nTo mark this special event\, the Melbourne Tram Museum will be open every Saturday from the launch on 11 April 2015 until 23 May 2015. \nThe exhibition will be on display until 12 December 2015\, our last open day for the year\, and the centenary of the decision to evacuate all Allied troops from the Gallipoli Peninsula.

DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the local interest in history has grown enormously as has the number of titles being published. To coincide with the various anniversaries occurring in 2015\, we are convening a History Writers’ Festival.\n \nThis festival will run on Saturday 18th April and Sunday 19th April\, 2015 with sessions every two hours from 10.00am. It is the untold story of Australia and the invasion of Russia 1918-19.\nMany of us are unaware that as World War One was coming to a close and soldiers were returning home\, a small group of Australian men signed up for more fighting. DESCRIPTION:See history come to life as the events of World War One are illustrated through storytelling and performance.\nOn the morning of 25 April 1915\, allied troops came ashore at Gallipoli in an attempt to seize the peninsula. Mistakenly landing a mile from their target location\, by evening over 2000 Australians had been killed or wounded. \nFrom 2014 to 2018 Australia marks the centenary of World War One and the Gallipoli landing\, a pivotal moment in forging our national identity. DESCRIPTION:The enduring fascination with Gallipoli is explored in this exclusive exhibition which presents some 100 items recovered from the Joint Historical and Archaeological Survey of the Gallipoli battlefield (2010 – 14) supported by the Australian\, New Zealand and Turkish governments. Historical and geographical context is provided by maps and engravings on loan from the University of Melbourne\, the Mehmet Ugurlu print collection and the Turkish Naval Forces Command.\nOn display in the Shrine Visitor Centre\, the exhibition will be open 10am Р5pm daily\, with extended opening hours for Anzac Day (25 April only\, 7am Р5pm). \nThis exhibition is proudly supported by the Australian\, Turkish and Victorian governments\, The University of Melbourne\, The Calvert-Jones Foundation and City of Melbourne.

SUMMARY:Anzac Day Dawn Service and March
DESCRIPTION:ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the first major action by Australian and New Zealand troops in the Great War when\, at dawn on April 25 1915\, they landed on the beaches at Gallipoli in the Dardanelles Strait. Here they fought troops of the Ottoman Empire alongside British\, French and Indian allies.\nToday ANZAC Day is the most important day of remembrance and commemoration in both New Zealand and Australia and dawn services are attended by hundreds of thousands of people across both countries. \nMembers of the public are advised to arrive at the Shrine by 5.30am if possible and to travel by public transport as parking is restricted near the Shrine on ANZAC Day. Further information on train and bus services can be found on the Metlink website. Details for Yarra Trams special early tram services can also be found there. \nFollowing the Dawn Service will be the Gunfire Breakfast\, held in the King’s Domain at the bottom of the Shrine Forecourt. Here visitors can enjoy a hot breakfast\, including coffee\, for a gold coin donation. \nThe Shrine Visitors Centre will open to visitors at 7am. The Visitors Centre includes an audio visual area and will be host to three exhibitions open to the public on ANZAC Day. \nFollowing the Dawn Service the Official Wreath Laying Service will commence at 8.15am. Officials laying wreaths\, including representatives of government\, ex service organisations and the Australia Defence Force will march up the Forecourt and enter the Shrine to lay wreaths in the Sanctuary. \nANZAC Day March commences at 9am at the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Street. The march continues along St Kilda Road to the Shrine where all participants march up the Forecourt prior to dismissing when they reach the Shrine steps. \nThe final ceremonial activity for ANZAC Day is the Commemoration Service that follows the March. DESCRIPTION:The MHSA (Vic) is pleased to present the third in the Cobby Oration series of public presentations. \nNamed after Australian WWI flying ace Wing Commander Arthur ‚ÄòHarry‚Äô Cobby\, DFC**\, the 2012 presentation will commemorate the service and leadership of one of Victoria‚Äôs greatest fighting generals of WWI. \nThe speaker will be Mr David Grierson\, former State president of Melbourne Legacy. \nMr Graeme Savige will also¬†present a¬†brief history on Lieutenant-General Stanley Savige. \nSir Stanley George Savige (1890-1954)\, army officer and founder of Legacy\, was born on 26 June 1890 at Morwell\, Victoria\, eldest of eight children of Samuel Savige\, butcher\, and his wife Ann Nora\, n√©e Walmsley\, both Victorian born.  Stan left Korumburra State School at the age of 12 to work as a blacksmith’s striker.  He subsequently held various casual jobs before being employed in a drapery.
