SUMMARY:Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Commemorative Service – Lemnos Square
DESCRIPTION:Annual Commemorative Event at Lemnos Square. \n \n  \nWe have had many services over the years since the official unveiling in 2015. Many dignitaries from here and abroad have visited our Memorial and paid their respects\, including the former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff\, General Konstantinos Floros. He was present when then Councillor Bernadene Voss\, as the Mayor of the City of Port Phillip\, announced the formal naming of the Reserve on which our Memorial is located\, “Lemnos Square”. \nThis bronze Memorial\, of a nurse protecting a weary soldier\, was sculpted by renowned artist Peter Corlett OAM. It recognizes the important role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC story and is dedicated to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915; to the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried there; and to the local community who supported them. \nOur 2024 Commemorative Service at Lemnos Square will include an address\, a wreath-laying ceremony\, the national anthems of Greece and Australia and the reciting of the Ode. \nThis year’s address will delivered by Captain Ryan Curtis\, a descendent of Warrant Officer Archibald Monk of the 3rd Australian General Hospital who served on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign. \nYou can also purchase a copy of ‘Lemnos Gallipoli Revealed’ or ‘Grecian Adventure’ – both authored by Jim Claven – which you will be able to collect at the conclusion of the commemorative service and then gift to a school or organisation to continue educating the wider community about the Hellenic connection to the Anzac story. \n  \nPlease email me at lee.tarlamis@hotmail.com to advise of your attendance by Monday 5 August 2024 \nYours sincerely \nLee Tarlamis OAM MP\nPresident \nLemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee

Noel was the team leader of the speakers for many years. \nNoel is a Past President of the Northbridge Rotary club. He spent many years as sailing captain of his sailing club. He also spent several years with Marine Rescue and the Rural Fire Service. \nNoel is also a volunteer at the Naval Historical Society where he has developed three Navy harbour cruises. He has also organised a speaker’s program for the Navy Historical Society where the presentations are delivered by Zoom to the 500 members around Australia. \nHe fulfilled a boyhood dream to fly a WW II fighter by flying a SPITFIRE at The Imperial War Museum at Duxford in the UK recently. \n\n

SUMMARY:The Lost Diggers of Fromelles screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this compelling documentary that uncovers a thrilling detective trail across Australia and Europe as experts connect families with the fallen of Fromelles. \n \nAlmost 2000 Australian soldiers were killed in action or died of wounds at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916. Over 90 years later\, 250 of these men were discovered in a mass burial site. \nThey were later disinterred and examined before reburial at Pheasant Wood Cemetery in Fromelles. Once unknown soldiers\, 180 of these men have now been identified by name through DNA technology\, forensic science and historical data. \nThe Lost Diggers of Fromelles uncovers just a few of these stories and offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the soldiers were discovered and then connected to descendants. \nFollowing the screening\, we invite guests to attend the afternoon service commemorating the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Battle of Fromelles. An optional\, paid lunch will be available between the screening and the service. SUMMARY:An Australian Country Town at War: Armidale 1914-1918
DESCRIPTION:Australian society of the early 20th Century had many potential fault lines. But upon the outbreak of war in August 1914\, most of these disappeared from sight\, as much of the nation threw its support behind the war effort.  \n \nThis was to be the case in Armidale in northern NSW. Yet\, by 1918\, this rural township would be deeply and bitterly divided. The divisions latent in most societies had emerged\, often in unpleasant ways\, based upon religion\, race\, class and status. \nNevertheless\, despite the fixation of certain academics to find evidence of Australians becoming disillusioned and opposed to their country’s involvement in the war\, there is absolutely no evidence of the people of Armidale being so inclined. Even though the majority voted “No” in the two referenda which sought to conscript young men for overseas military service\, paradoxically there was a determination to see the defeat of Germany and its Allies. And complementing this was the pride the whole community took in the exploits of its AIF volunteers. That is why\, subsequently\, the people of Armidale constructed a war memorial\, out of pride for their AIF volunteers who fought overseas\, initially at Gallipoli but mostly in France and Belgium. \nClick here to download the flyer for this lecture. \n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nDR DAVID MARTIN FMHSNSW is a Fellow of the Military History Society of NSW. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of New England and his interest in military history is wide ranging. He is the author of Germany 1918-1945\, Oxford (2001). Over the years he has written a substantial number of articles and reviews of books\, covering the period from the 1588 Spanish Armada up until Australia’s involvement in East Timor. He grew up in Armidale and has had a life-long interest in the community’s World War I experience\, beginning as a child when attending an Anzac Day dawn service at the local war memorial. \n  \n\n\nOur Venue – Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\n\n\nThe current venue for The Military History Society of New South Wales lecture program will be the Auditorium at the Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, corner of Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. DESCRIPTION:The ADF Reserves Strategic Review – the perspective of the Defence Reserves Association . \nRoyal United Services Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address\nThursday 30th May 2024 at 1200 for 1230\nANZAC House\, 4 Collins St\, Melbourne \nBrig Mike Annett\, CSC – National President\, Defence Reserves Association. \nTopic: The ADF Reserves Strategic Review – the perspective of the Defence Reserves Associatio . \nMichael Annett graduated from Royal Military College in 1983 and had a number of appointments in RAAC. He has been a UN Observer in Iran\, and also Deputy Commander JTF 636\, responsible for the security of the Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006\, after which he left the Regular Army and transferred to the Reserve. While working as CEO of RSL Victoria\, he also attended CDSS and was promoted Brigadier in 2013\, assuming command of 4 Bde. \nResuming full time military service in May 2015\, Michael deployed to Afghanistan as the Australian Task Group Commander from July 2015 to March 2016. Upon his return from Afghanistan Michael returned to his role with the Victorian RSL. He also took up the position Director General Reserves – Army\, a part time appointment within Army HQ. In January 2019 Michael moved to the position of Assistant Commander of 2nd Division. \nMichael moved in October 2019 to a contracted role with the Department of Veteran Affairs where he contributed to the establishment of six new Veteran and Family Wellbeing Hubs nationally followed by working in support of the Joint Transition Authority within Defence\, focused on updating the Defence Transition Manual to reflect best practice in managing and improving transition outcomes for ADF members and their families. Michael is undertaking further project work for Defence as a Reserve senior officer within Joint Capability Group and in a private capacity provides strategic consultancy services with a focus on policy development and sustainable service delivery planning.Michael is the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Military Veteran Group\, is a member of the Victorian Council of the Royal United Services Institute\, and in January 2023 was elected as the National President of the Defence Reserves Association. SUMMARY:A Boer War Day Commemoration Service Shrine of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 26 May will be our fourteenth annual Boer War Day Commemoration Service at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. This year we will be Commemorating the 122nd Anniversary Signing of the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902\, officially ending the Boer War\, MHHV Committee Member Dr Daryl Moran\, will deliver the Commemoration address\, Victoria and the Scottish Horse. \n \nThis annual event will honour the service of 23\,000 Australian’s and more than 6\,500 New Zealand soldiers and nurses and the sacrifice of 1\,000 Australian’s and more than 230 New Zealander’s\, killed in action\, died of wounds\, in accidents\, or from disease. The march will step off from the bottom of the steps to the lower end of the Shrine forecourt at 11.50 am\, the Service will commence at 12 noon at the Eternal Flame. The ceremony will conclude at 1pm followed by refreshments in the gardens between the flags and Birdwood Avenue.

SUMMARY:From Books and Blackboards to Battlefields- Victoria’s State School Teacher-Soldiers in the Great War - Speaker: Rosalie Triolo
DESCRIPTION:All of us have memories of our schooldays\, but few Victorians have paused to contemplate the experiences of Victoria’s male State school teachers\, mainly ‘primary’ but with some from the beginnings of State ‘secondary’ and ‘technical’ education\, who served in the Great War. \n \n \nThis presentation explores experiences common to those teachers as enlistees\, as educated tourists\, as trainers of soldiers\, as men at the front\, as members of an Education Department community\, and as teachers and ‘students of life’ while overseas. \nIt further explores how\, compared to Australia’s enlistment overall\, Victoria’s eligible-aged State school teachers were more likely to enlist than Australia’s non-teachers\, more likely to enlist early than late-war\, more likely to become officers and non-commissioned officers\, more likely to receive military honours\, decorations and other awards and\, tragically\, slightly more likely to die. \nMany of the experiences would hold true for Victoria’s independent school teachers\, but this presentation draws on a variety of examples from State school communities Victoria-wide\, some stories being humorous and remarkable in coincidence\, others being wholly tragic\, and many from schools\, even whole towns\, that no longer exist. \nScan or click this QR code to book your ticket.\nAbout the presenter \nRosalie Triolo is an adjunct senior lecturer at Monash University who writes and presents widely in History education\, history of Australian education\, Australian history generally\, and on WWI. For 25 years\, she helped facilitate the development of specialist teachers of History for Australian and overseas schools before retiring from Monash at the end of 2021. She is a Fellow and currently the Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria\, as well as Chair of its Historical Societies Support Committee. She has served voluntarily on the RHSV Council since 2014 and is one of two delegates to the Federation of Australian Historical Societies (2020- ). She is a past President of the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria (6 years)\, a past Board member (further 24 years) and a Life Member\, being the longest-serving contributor to the HTAV community in each of those roles. She is currently Victoria’s representative on the Council of the Australian National Museum of Education (2015- ); and was the History Teachers’ Association of Australia delegate to the Australian Historical Association (2010-20). \nRosalie has published general public as well as scholarly works and teacher/tutor professional learning and classroom resources for tertiary\, secondary and primary education audiences\, including for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs education and commemoration branches. Her MEd by research of ‘State Schooling and Civic and Citizenship Ideals in Victoria\, 1872-1910’ was the precursor to her award-winning doctoral thesis\, ‘”Our Schools and the War”: Victoria’s Education Department and the Great War\, 1914-18’ which became the book of similar title ‘Commended’ in the Victorian Community History Awards\, 2012. For the above and voluntarily contributing to Shrine of Remembrance lectures and education programs since its undercroft was developed\, she was awarded in the 2015 Anzac Centenary year the Shrine of Remembrance Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Community Understandings of Victorian Service and Sacrifice in Wars and Peace-Keeping.

He delivered his first speech to parliament on 5 September 2022. \nHe was born in Dublin in 1977 and migrated with his family to Melbourne in 1988. \nIn 1993 his family proudly became Australian citizens and soon after\, Keith was elected school captain of Ringwood Secondary College. His part-time job was at Eastland McDonald’s. Keith was educated at the University of Melbourne (Politics and Economics) and Monash University (Law with Honours)\, where he was awarded the Sir Charles Lowe Prize for Best Advocate. He later completed a Masters of International Relations at the University of Cambridge. \nAfter graduating in 2005\, Keith worked as a lawyer with national commercial firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques\, before becoming a barrister in 2010. At the Bar he specialised in commercial and consumer trials. \nKeith also served in the Australian Army\, completing part-time officer training at MUR and Duntroon\, reaching the rank of Captain. But most of these works are just repeating well-established discourses and focus on the Australian Light Horse at the expense of others. More British Territorial soldiers fought in the battle than Australian Light horsemen and they did most of the killing and dying. It is no wonder that the Ottomans are mostly absent from this story telling if even the British are denied their rightful place. In most modern accounts\, Ottoman troops have been described as passive defenders\, only reacting to Australian actions and nothing more. \nThis lecture is an attempt to tell and describe what happened ‘on the other side of the hill’ and answer some of the resilient questions by putting the battle into the context of the Palestine Campaign and WW1 as a whole. The Beersheba Battle was part of a series of battles fought on a secondary front of a global war. The Australians fought as a part of British Imperial Forces. In addition to Australians and New Zealanders there were soldiers from the British Isles\, India\, Egypt (labourers) and even Pacific and Caribbean islands. The Ottoman units were composed of not only Turks but also Arabs\, Kurds\, Circassians\, Albanians and other nationalities. \nBecause WW1 was a giant struggle between two alliances\, the Germans and Austro-Hungarians\, though in small numbers\, played roles. The French wanted to take part but for imperialistic reasons the British tried to minimise their contribution. Special guest speaker Brigadier Michael Annett CSC will speak about the Reserve Strategic Review. \nAbout the Topic: \nAs a consequence of the Defence Strategic Review which reported publicly in April 2023\, Defence has been tasked to conduct a very comprehensive and far-reaching strategic review of Defence Reserves in Australia to consider reserves and reserve service [i.e. the pattern of reserve service as much as the people themselves] as part of National Defence in the light of current strategic circumstances. \nWe are faced with a deteriorating security environment overall. Hence\, one of the driving forces behind the DSR is the loss of the 10-years’ warning-of-conflict period that had featured so heavily in our thinking up until this point. \nIn light of these changing circumstances\, the Review is to investigate innovative ways to adapt the current structure\, shape\, conditions of service\, and role of the Reserves to determine how the Defence Reserves can best complement the total defence workforce and can provide an expansion base and follow-on forces in time of crisis. \nThe review is to investigate innovative ways to adapt the current structure\, shape\, conditions of service\, and role of the Reserves to determine how the Reserves can best complement the total defence workforce and provide an expansion base and follow-on forces in time of crisis. \nAbout our Speaker: Brigadier Michael Annett CSC \nBrigadier Michael Annett CSC\nMichael was born on 1st March 1962 in Western Victoria and after completing his secondary education at Hamilton High School he entered the Royal Military College in 1980\, graduating in 1983. His initial appointment in 1985 was as a Troop Leader in 1st Armoured Regiment. 1987 – 1989 saw him as a Squadron 2IC in 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He also served as Officer Commanding A Squadron\, 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1993/4 and the Commanding Officer of 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment in Victoria in 2000/2001. \nIn 1988/89 Michael served as a UN Military Observer on the ceasefire line between Iran and Iraq and he has participated in exchanges with British and New Zealand armoured units and with the US Army. \nHe held a number of training and staff appointments including Senior Instructor Tactics at the School of Armour\, Commanding Officer and Chief Instructor of Warrant Officer and NCO Wing at the Land Warfare Centre Canungra and Chief of Staff\, Headquarters 2nd Division\, in 2003/4. \nMichael Annett is a graduate of the Australian Army Command and Staff College which he attended in 1995 and from which he was awarded a Diploma in Management Studies. As a graduate of the University of New South Wales he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in History in 1984\, and from Deakin University he was awarded a Masters Degree in International Relations in 1999. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. \nColonel Annett’s final appointment in the Regular Army was as Deputy Commander Joint Task Force 636\, responsible for planning and delivering ADF support to the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games\, in March 2006. \nMichael left the Regular Army to serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Branch of the RSL in May 2006\, the state’s major veteran support organisation and a large commercial hospitality and aged care facilitation enterprise. In 2007 Michael resumed his soldiering as a Reservist. He attended the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies as a part-time student in Canberra in 2012 and was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Studies. Michael was promoted to Brigadier on 1st January 2013 to assume command of 4th Brigade in 2013. \nResuming full time military service in May 2015\, Michael deployed to Afghanistan as the Australian Task Group Commander from July 2015 to March 2016. \nUpon his return from Afghanistan Michael returned to his role with the Victorian RSL. He also took up the position Director General Reserves – Army\, a part time appointment within Army HQ. In January 2019 Michael moved to the position of Assistant Commander of 2nd Division. \nMichael moved from his position as Chief Executive Officer of RSL Victoria in October 2019 to a contracted role with the Department of Veteran Affairs where he contributed to the establishment of six new Veteran and Family Wellbeing Hubs nationally. The success of this project is now being followed up by using the model for a significantly expanded Commonwealth funded network facilitated through DVA. In May 2021\, Michael commenced a project role working in support of the Joint Transition Authority within Defence\, initially focused on updating the Defence Transition Manual to reflect best practice in managing and improving transition outcomes for ADF members and their families. With the Manual now adopted Michael is undertaking further project work for Defence as a Reserve senior officer within Joint Capability Group and in a private capacity provides strategic consultancy services with a focus on policy development and sustainable service delivery planning. \nMichael was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) in the 2007 Australia Day Honours List and received a Commendation for Distinguished Service for his role in Afghanistan in the 2017 Queens Birthday Honours List. He was appointed an Honorary Aide de Camp to the Governor-General and since March 2021 has been the Honorary Colonel of 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment and is Patron of the Regimental Association. Michael is the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Military Veteran Group\, is a member of the Victorian Council of the Royal United Services Institute\, and in January 2023 was elected as the National President of the Defence Reserves Association. He is also a Legatee and Vice President of Melbourne Legacy. \nMichael Annett and his wife Helen have a son\, William and a daughter\, Victoria. SUMMARY:Game of Dominoes: Australia’s Security and the Cold War 1947-1991
DESCRIPTION:MHHV 5th Biennial Two-Day Conference – 13 & 14 APRIL 2024 \n \n \nThis conference will examine the Cold War period (1947-1991)\, its impact on Australia’s defence and security posture and Australia’s contribution to the Western alliance during this time.  Australia’s involvement in Asia in particular\, arising from its part in the ANZUS treaty of 1951 and in SEATO from 1954 will be examined – its role in the Malayan Emergency\, the Korean War\, konfrontasi and the Vietnam War all within the context of potential nuclear war. Australia’s Army\, Navy\, and Air Force were all engaged in this struggle\, partly against the Soviet Union but mostly against revolutionary movements in Asia supported by Communist China. Australia’s counter-intelligence operations within Australia will also be examined. \nWhat was Australia’s security position in 1947 and how did this lead to ANZUS? How did domestic politics play out in the larger anti-communist context? What drove the establishment of SEATO? Why did Australia join the UN forces in Korea? What was the Far Eastern Strategic Reserve? What were the priorities for a non-nuclear army training under a nuclear threat? How did Australia’s signals intelligence contribute? How successful was ASIO in combatting the NKVD/KGB in Australia? Why did Menzies establish ASIS in 1952?  How did Army\, Air Force and Navy respond to the new paradigms?  Was Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War important and what were the outcomes? Was the Peace Movement a communist front? How did the Soviet-CCP split affect Australia’s security? Did nuclear tests in Australia strengthen Australian defence? Did the fall of the Berlin Wall change Australia’s  security posture? SUMMARY:Beyond the 'Kantai Kessen' - Japan's Fateful Defeat in the Southwest Pacific
DESCRIPTION:In the ‘Kantai Kessen’ (decisive naval battle doctrine) the Japanese navy would win a war by fighting and winning a single\, decisive naval action.\nAt the beginning of May 1942 Japan prepared to commence a fresh wave of offensive actions in the Southwest Pacific with the ultimate aims of strategically isolating Australia and America while seeking to finally neutralise the US Pacific Fleet through the destruction of its aircraft-carrier arm. Within a year the ambitions of the Japanese Naval Staff lay in ruins\, and the ultimate fate of Japan itself was effectively sealed. \nThis presentation seeks to illustrate the core weakness of the Japanese military machine\, namely its wholesale commitment to offensive warfare\, which was exposed and deflated by the Allies in the course of the New Guinea and Solomons campaigns following the disastrous reversal of fortunes for the Imperial Japanese Navy at Midway in early June 1942. Over-ambitious strategic planning\, fractious inter-service relations between the Japanese Army and Navy\, the lack of proper logistics and supply infrastructure\, and weaknesses in the buildup of air and naval forces are identified as the core reasons why any contemplated operations against Australia other than bombing and submarine warfare were eventually untenable\, and made the defence of Japan’s Pacific island shield similarly impossible. Angus’s books on this theme include Neglected Skies: The Demise of British Naval Power in the Far East 1922–42 (2017) which covers a wide period of history that takes the British Navy from the heights of its might to the point of near decay at a critical time\, A Ceaseless Watch: Australia’s Third Party Naval Defense 1919–1942 (2021) which illustrates how Australia confronted the need to base its post–World War I defense planning around the security provided by a major naval power\, and Ikara: Australia’s Cold War Wonder Weapon (2021)\, for the Naval Historical Society of Australia\, which sets the scene for the development of the Ikara missile via a description of anti-submarine warfare during the Second World War and the evolving Cold War situation with Russian submarine developments.
