SUMMARY:The Allonville Disaster: notorious or forgotten? With Prof. Peter Stanley
DESCRIPTION:In the early hours of 31 May 1918 German shells struck a farm at Allonville on the Somme. \n \n \nOne hit the roof of a barn in which a company of the (Victorian) 14th Battalion was sleeping. According to Charles Bean\, the shell caused more casualties than any other in AIF history – thirteen killed and 56 wounded – though I think that the full total was around 80 casualties. \nI’ll talk about the research for a book on Allonville\, discuss what I’m finding and what I’m doing with the evidence. \nThis event\, which you’d imagine would have been of particular interest to Victorians\, seems to have been virtually forgotten\, except for a footnote in Bean’s Vol VI\, and a chapter in the battalion history\, by Newton Wanliss. \n \nAbout the presenter\nProf. Peter Stanley retired from UNSW Canberra in 2023. He is one of Australia’s most distinguished military historians\, having published 50 books\, most on Australian military history. His most recent books include Beyond The Broken Years (NewSouth)\, the first history of the writing of Australian military history\, and The Sherrin (Big Sky)\, a novel set in ‘the Islands’ in 1945.

SUMMARY:AGL Shaw Lecture: La Trobe\, Redcoats and the Mounted Rifles - Dr Andrew Kilsby
DESCRIPTION:On 1st October 1839\, the newly appointed Superintendent of the Port Phillip District\, Charles La Trobe\, came ashore in Melbourne for the first time. \n \n \nHe was greeted by William Lonsdale\, who had been sent to the district as de facto superintendent\, and Police Magistrate in late 1836. \nLonsdale\, a recently retired officer of the 4th Regiment (King’s Own) had come to Port Phillip with a small ‘garrison’ of an Ensign and 30 men from the same regiment. He forged a close relationship with La Trobe over the coming years even though La Trobe was distinctly non-military. While neither had direct command of the ‘garrison’\, which reported to HQ in Sydney\, the soldiers had an important role in providing the ultimate\, mostly symbolic\, Imperial underpinning of La Trobe’s authority. \nA Mounted Police detachment\, although made up of soldiers on attachment from their regiments\, did come under control of the Police Magistrate. \nThis presentation will describe the life and times of the Redcoats and the Mounted Police\, and provide (good\, bad and ugly) context to their presence in the District of Port Phillip until Separation in 1850. \n  \nPresented by Dr Andrew Kilsby.\nAndrew is a professional historian and published author. His focus is military\, business and biographical history. A graduate of RMC Duntroon he holds a PhD from UNSW at ADFA. A founder of Military History and Heritage Victoria Inc. in 2010\, Andrew has also written numerous articles\, convened and presented in military history conferences and arranged exhibitions\, including two at the RHSV. His business publications have also achieved two RHSV Community History Award commendations. As the 1924-25 Fellow of the La Trobe Society\, Andrew is investigating ‘La Trobe\, Law and Order 1839-1854’.

SUMMARY:The Buna Shots: Two photographs that changed the course of the Second World War
DESCRIPTION:Join multi-awarding-winning author Stephen Dando-Collins as he uncovers the fascinating story behind two iconic Second World War photographs in his new book The Buna Shots. \nOn Christmas Day 1942\, New Zealand combat photographer George Silk photographed a “fuzzy wuzzy angel” helping a wounded Digger along a track in New Guinea. It later became regarded as one of the war’s most iconic Australian images. \nJust days later\, American LIFE magazine photographer George Strock photographed three American casualties on Buna Beach. In 2014\, Time magazine described his shot as ‘the photograph that won the war’. \nIn this intriguing talk\, Dando-Collins will reveal the connection between these two photographs and the lengths Silk and Strock went to in getting them published. From accusations of treason to presidential involvement\, this fascinating talk will reveal the gripping story of two arresting photographs\, two courageous photographers\, and the quest for truth in war. \nAbout the author \nStephen Dando-Collins is the award-winning author of 48 books\, including children’s novels and biographies. The majority of his works deal with military history ranging from Greek and Roman times to American 19th century history and the First and Second World War. HMAS Cerberus\, or the Cradle of the Navy\, will be open to the public on Sunday 6 April 2025 showcasing the great job they do in educating and training the next generation of Navy’s officers and sailors. \nThere will be lots to see and do\, with most schools open and offering special displays of their training activities\, (e.g. small boats and seamanship\, survival at sea\, damage control demonstrations\, interactive training simulators and much more). You’ll get the chance to mingle with staff and trainees and ask questions about their life in today’s Navy. In addition\, there will be aircraft flyovers\, ADF vehicles and weapons on display\, precision drill demonstrations and Navy band performances. \nThe Open Day will run from 10.00 – 4.00pm. It is a ticketed event and Navy encourages you to book as soon as possible after tickets go on sale on or around 03 March 2025. \nWe suggest you Monitor the HMAS Cerberus Facebook page for more information. \nFor Navy veterans and their families\, there are a few special treats being offered. \nThe Commanding Officer will ensure that the first demonstration at the Survival at Sea Facility will be at 10.15 or shortly thereafter. This is sure to be one of the most popular displays during the day so please take advantage of this opportunity for preferential access. \nFollowing this demonstration\, at 11.00am in the Wardroom there will be a special morning tea offered and a welcome by the Commanding Officer\, Captain Ben Favelle. DESCRIPTION:The German panzer generals of the Second World War have been the subject of great historical interest. \n \nMuch has been written about their campaigns and military decision making\, however we know much less about the men themselves – their private thoughts\, personal relationships\, and ability to cope with the pressures of command. \nThis presentation is based on four of Germany’s leading panzer commanders in 1941 and draws upon their private wartime correspondence to reconstruct who were the German panzer commanders behind the scenes? What motivated them and what accounted for (or undermined) their success? \nThe research is based on David’s recent book: Hitler’s Panzer Generals: Guderian\, Hoepner\, Reinhardt\, and Schmidt Unguarded (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press\, 2023). \nAbout the Speaker\nDavid Stahel is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales in Canberra and teaches for the Australia Defence Force Academy. DESCRIPTION:Explore the intriguing world of wartime intelligence and uncover the extraordinary career of Professor A.D (Dale) Trendall (1909–1995) – classical scholar\, cryptographer\, and art historian. \nDale Trendall\, a contemporary of the five English spies at Cambridge University in the 1930s\, moved to the University of Sydney before the Second World War. During the war\, he used his expertise in ancient Greek vase painting to decode Japanese messages\, directly contributing to the Allies’ success in the Pacific theatre of war. \nWhen it was revealed that Japanese forces had intercepted Australian ciphers in Timor\, Trendall devised his own code—Trencode—which was used by the Australian military from 1942 to 1946. \nJoin archaeologist and Director of the Trendall Research Centre Dr Gillian Shepherd for a lecture uncovering the story of Trendall’s life and work and exploring the unexpected connections between wartime intelligence and ancient art. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Gillian Shepherd is Director of the A.D. Trendall Research Centre for Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at La Trobe University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Classics and Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne and her doctorate in classical archaeology at Trinity College\, Cambridge. Her research interests focus on ancient Greek burial customs\, but through her position at La Trobe University she has discovered intriguing new avenues to explore\, including A.D. Trendall’s work in cryptography and its profound influence on wartime intelligence. \nThis lecture is presented in collaboration with La Trobe University’s Trendall Research Centre.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 19 February 2025 7:00PM-8:00PM \n \n \nSubmariners are a special breed. Not for them a life on the ocean wave\, the fresh air and sunshine of other naval sailors. With stealth and daring they go deep and dark\, alone and unseen\, in often dangerous waters. They sometimes call themselves the Silent Service\, with good reason. \nAustralian submariners have done extraordinary deeds in the First and Second World Wars and\, more recently\, the Cold War. In April 1915 the Australian submarine AE2 penetrated the Dardanelles Strait to ‘run amuck’\, a historic feat that was a turning point in the Gallipoli campaign. Eventually captured\, her crew spent three harrowing years as prisoners-of-war in Turkey. \nIn the Second World War Australian naval volunteers made their name serving in midget submarines\, attacking Hitler’s mightiest battleship\, the Tirpitz\, in the icy waters of a Norwegian fjord. Later\, they fought the Japanese in the South China Sea. \nAnd in the last half of the twentieth century\, RAN submarines played a vital role tracking the Soviet navy in the Pacific Ocean. One wrong move could have led to outright war. The risks they ran\, the perils they met and the intelligence they gathered are still classified Top Secret. \nSubmarines and the sailors who serve in them have been and remain the tip of the spear of Australia’s defences. For the first time\, this is their unique story. \n \nAbout the presenter \nMike Carlton \nIn a working life of more than fifty years\, Mike Carlton was one of Australia’s best-known media figures in radio\, television and newspapers. \nBeginning as a cadet journalist at the ABC\, he became a war correspondent in Vietnam and for three years was the ABC’s Bureau Chief in Jakarta. He also reported for the ABC from London\, New York and major Asian capitals. In television\, he worked on the ABC’s groundbreaking This Day Tonight current affairs program in the 1970s and for Nine Network News and A Current Affair. \nIn 1980 Mike turned to talk radio\, first at Sydney’s 2UE and then 2GB\, and later at London’s LBC Newstalk 97.3FM\, where he won a coveted Sony Radio Academy award in 1993 for Britain’s best talk breakfast show. His radio satire on current affairs\, Friday News Review\, was ‘must listening’ in Australia and the UK. \nFor many years he wrote a popular weekly column for the Sydney Morning Herald. \nMike has had a life-long passion for naval history and is the author of Cruiser\, First Victory\, Flagship and The Scrap Iron Flotilla. \nClick here to read a review of this book.

DESCRIPTION:Discover a compelling exploration of history and memory through the eyes of Central Victorian artist Clayton Tremlett in our latest exhibition. After more than six years of dedicated research\, Tremlett presents a comparative portrait study of sixty-six First World War Digger memorials\, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the faces that have stood as silent sentinels for a century. \nTremlett’s meticulous process involved visiting\, documenting\, and researching each monument\, often capturing their likeness at sunrise to harness the purest light. His work results in powerful screen prints that mirror the iconic First World War studio portraits\, allowing you to see these memorials in a new light—both literally and figuratively. \nThe exhibition also sheds new light on August Rietman\, the most prolific Victorian sculptor of Digger statues. A pacifist of Swiss-German heritage\, Rietman’s figures are celebrated as the quintessential Aussie Digger. Tremlett’s research reveals that Rietman’s contributions to these monuments are far more significant than previously thought\, with at least fifteen statues attributed to his craftsmanship. \nImmerse yourself in this fusion of art\, history\, and research\, and witness the faces of our past brought vividly to life. \n  \n5 October 2024 – 13 April 2025

Our latest exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance\, offering a nostalgic experience that\, for the first time\, delves into the forgotten designs for Victoria’s War Memorial. \n \nExplore the entries of the 1921 War Memorial design competition\, each a testament to the social and political tapestry of that time. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken.
