RSVP essential\, click here to register. \nExhibition opening hours\nProfessor Sir Joseph Burke Gallery \n24 September to 10 December 2024\nTuesdays & Thursdays: 10am–4pm \nLevel 1\, Gateway Building\, Trinity College (Enter via Tin Alley)\n100 Royal Parade\nParkville 3052 \nThis year marks the 25th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s vote for independence and the start of the Australian-led UN peace-keeping mission known as InterFET that would be deployed to the country in the wake of widespread destruction and violence by the departing military following the referendum’s outcome. \nIn 2003\, within a year of Timor-Leste gaining formal independence\, a women’s art cooperative called LO’UD was founded by female resistance fighters. The following year\, LO’UD would partner with the Australian volunteer organisation East Timor Women Australia (ETWA)\, which also this year celebrates their 20 years of cooperation with LO’UD. \nDrawing upon traditional weaving rich in stories\, and photography taken on the ground in Timor-Leste over the past fifty years\, Tais\, Culture & Resilience: Woven Stories of Timor-Leste shares an important part of the story of Timor-Leste’s struggles and their drive to maintain culture in the face of adversity. \nLO’UD weavers from the country’s far-eastern municipality of Lautem still work to preserve culture and alleviate poverty by marketing naturally dyed\, hand-woven textiles known as tais. Through the use of specific designs and patterns\, tais are an expression of Timor-Leste’s diverse cultural identity and this important tradition has endured despite successive occupations. \nTrinity College is excited to partner with ETWA to bring together rich stories\, in Tais\, Culture & Resilience: Woven Stories of Timor-Leste. \nSymposium – Saturday 21 September\nAugmenting the exhibition will be a half-day symposium on Saturday\, 21 September\, with keynote speaker Professor Craig Stockings from the University of NSW\, Official InterFET historian. \nStockings is the author of Born of Fire and Ash\, the inaugural volume of the official history of Australian operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor\, providing an honest\, challenging and compelling account of the 1999–2000 East Timor crisis and Australia’s response to it. \nAccompanied by a line-up of scholars and expert presenters from the Australian War Memorial\, ETWA\, and the Timor-Leste community themselves\, this symposium is an event not to be missed! \nClick here to register and for further details.

DESCRIPTION:This unique photographic exhibition unites two distinct groups of men separated by a century\, connected by conflict and the art of photo montage. \n \nThe first group comprises the men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) who battled in Flanders during the Great War’s most harrowing encounters. The second group consists of Belgian men engaged in ongoing bomb disposal efforts on those same former battlefields today. \nDrawing inspiration from Australian cultural and artistic figures like photographer Frank Hurley and artist Will Longstaff\, artist Ian Alderman embarks on a philosophical journey exploring the enduring repercussions of human conflict—legacies that persist long after the cessation of gunfire. \nImages are accompanied by poignant quotes sourced from Australia’s Archives\, laying bare the plight of Australia’s war widows\, grieving mothers and traumatised returning soldiers. \n30 March – 29 September 2024

SUMMARY:Great Courage and Initiative - The Heroic Life of George Ingram VC\, MM. - Speaker: Anthony McAleer OAM
DESCRIPTION:By today’s standards George Mawby Ingram lived a courageous life.  \n \n‘This NCO showed great courage and initiative’. \n\nRecommendation for Military Medal\, March 1917\n\n‘He showed the most splendid qualities of courage and leadership’. \n\nRecommendation for Victoria Cross\, October 1918\n\n \nFrom a country boyhood growing up on the family’s orchards at Bagshot and Seville to his pre-war militia service in the Australian Garrison Artillery and the first year of World War One manning the guns at Rabaul in former German New Guinea. \nA dose of malaria in the Pacific had him sent home and discharged however this didn’t stop him\, five hours later he walked into a recruiting office in Melbourne and enlisted in the AIF. With the 24th Battalion he was sent to Europe and during his first action on the front line\, at Bapaume\, he was awarded the Military Medal. \nOver the next two years he experienced all the horror and heroism of the Western Front with the men who wore the red and white diamond. He survived the killing grounds of Bullecourt\, Ypres\, Flanders\, Passchendaele\, Villers Bretonneux and Mont St Quentin. He saw many good mates sacrificed and lost both his brothers in the war. \nOn October 5th 1918 at Montbrehain\, the AIF’s last battle of the Great War\, his actions led to him being awarded the highest award for gallantry in battle\, the Victoria Cross\, the last Australian to receive one for the First World War. After the war he returned home to a hero’s welcome. \nIn the post-war years he spent time as a soldier settler\, was an original member of the Shrine Guard and served once again in the Second World War with the Royal Australian Engineers. His last decades were spent working for Melbourne’s biggest building contractors E A and Frank Watts Pty Ltd. A tall\, modest man he rarely spoke of his war time experiences although he carried the physical and mental scars of that war for most of his life. \n \nAbout the presenter \nAnthony McAleer OAM has worked for Museums Victoria for the past twenty-three years where he currently manages the dedicated Visitor Engagement Team at the Immigration Museum\, undertaking tours and looking after visiting school groups. \nFor the last thirty-five years he has been involved with numerous community groups\, mainly historical societies and RSL clubs. \nHe has written twenty-four books and edited three\, mainly to do with the history of the Yarra Valley\, including his detailed accounts of the area’s military heritage and the recently published ‘Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans’. \nHe has also been responsible for the creation of some sixty memorials in the Yarra Valley area\, mainly recognising the district’s military history. \nHis achievements include being awarded Shire of Yarra Ranges ‘Citizen of the Year’ in 1997\, a Casey electorate ‘Special Community Achievement’ award in 2016 and in 2018 receiving a Medal of the Order of Australia for outstanding community service and for achievements in military history.

DESCRIPTION:The Syria-Lebanon theatre of the Second World War has become the great undiscussed warzone. Don’t mention the war! \nIn June 1941 Commonwealth\, Australian and Free French forces invaded Syria\, out of concern that Germany may begin using bases occupied by the Vichy French. \nOperation Exporter is probably one of the most misunderstood and forgotten campaigns of World War II. It was a complicated mixture of strategic imperatives around airfields and oil\, politico-diplomatic manoeuvering\, and improvisation with scarce military resources. \nLieutenant-Colonel Ron Lyons (retired) discusses this often forgotten Second World War campaign. Ron served for many years as an office of the Australian Army Reserve and subsequently as a military historian and battlefield guide. He is also Vice-President of The Military History Society of New South Wales and Vice-President of The Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies New South Wales. \nTIME AND VENUE: 10:30AM Saturday\, 7 September 2024 at The Auditorium\, Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, Hyde Park South\, corner Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. DESCRIPTION:A wreath laying to honour all those who served in the Vietnam War.\nThis service commemorates all those who served in the Vietnam War on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. \nOn this day in 1966\, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan\, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the Vietnam War. The battle saw D Company\, 6th Battalion\, Royal Australian Regiment\, face an enemy force of over 2\,000. Heavily outnumbered\, D Company held fast for four hours\, supported by accurate artillery fire from Nui Dat\, before reinforcements arrived. The battle saw 18 killed\, and was the largest loss of life on a single day for the Australians. \nIn 1969\, D Company returned to Long Tan to erect a memorial cross and commemorate the battle. Over time\, this day became synonymous with all those who served and died in the Vietnam War. In 1987\, then Prime Minister Bob Hawke made this official\, announcing that Long Tan Day would now be known as Vietnam Veterans’ Day. \nWe continue to honour the service and sacrifice of all Vietnam veterans on this day. Approximately 60\,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War. Of these\, 3\,000 were wounded\, and 521 were killed. \nThis service is organised by the Victorian branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association. SUMMARY:Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Commemorative Service – Lemnos Square
DESCRIPTION:Annual Commemorative Event at Lemnos Square. \n \n  \nWe have had many services over the years since the official unveiling in 2015. Many dignitaries from here and abroad have visited our Memorial and paid their respects\, including the former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff\, General Konstantinos Floros. He was present when then Councillor Bernadene Voss\, as the Mayor of the City of Port Phillip\, announced the formal naming of the Reserve on which our Memorial is located\, “Lemnos Square”. \nThis bronze Memorial\, of a nurse protecting a weary soldier\, was sculpted by renowned artist Peter Corlett OAM. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this compelling documentary that uncovers a thrilling detective trail across Australia and Europe as experts connect families with the fallen of Fromelles. \n \nAlmost 2000 Australian soldiers were killed in action or died of wounds at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916. Over 90 years later\, 250 of these men were discovered in a mass burial site. \nThey were later disinterred and examined before reburial at Pheasant Wood Cemetery in Fromelles. Once unknown soldiers\, 180 of these men have now been identified by name through DNA technology\, forensic science and historical data. \nThe Lost Diggers of Fromelles uncovers just a few of these stories and offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the soldiers were discovered and then connected to descendants. \nFollowing the screening\, we invite guests to attend the afternoon service commemorating the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Battle of Fromelles. SUMMARY:An Australian Country Town at War: Armidale 1914-1918
DESCRIPTION:Australian society of the early 20th Century had many potential fault lines. But upon the outbreak of war in August 1914\, most of these disappeared from sight\, as much of the nation threw its support behind the war effort.  \n \nThis was to be the case in Armidale in northern NSW. Yet\, by 1918\, this rural township would be deeply and bitterly divided. The divisions latent in most societies had emerged\, often in unpleasant ways\, based upon religion\, race\, class and status. \nNevertheless\, despite the fixation of certain academics to find evidence of Australians becoming disillusioned and opposed to their country’s involvement in the war\, there is absolutely no evidence of the people of Armidale being so inclined. Even though the majority voted “No” in the two referenda which sought to conscript young men for overseas military service\, paradoxically there was a determination to see the defeat of Germany and its Allies. And complementing this was the pride the whole community took in the exploits of its AIF volunteers. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of New England and his interest in military history is wide ranging. He is the author of Germany 1918-1945\, Oxford (2001). Over the years he has written a substantial number of articles and reviews of books\, covering the period from the 1588 Spanish Armada up until Australia’s involvement in East Timor. He grew up in Armidale and has had a life-long interest in the community’s World War I experience\, beginning as a child when attending an Anzac Day dawn service at the local war memorial. \n  \n\n\nOur Venue – Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\n\n\nThe current venue for The Military History Society of New South Wales lecture program will be the Auditorium at the Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, corner of Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. Discover the story of the man behind the name. \nCaptain Sam Templeton was the first Australian Officer to be captured by the Japanese in the Kokoda Campaign. After being interrogated by his captors he was executed on the battlefield. \nTempleton had predicted his fate\, telling a platoon commander\, if ‘he went into action\, he wouldn’t come back’. Having resigned himself to his destiny\, Templeton misled his captors on the numerical strength of the Australian forces waiting in Kokoda and Port Moresby. \nDid Templeton’s misinformation slow the initial push by the Yokoyama Advance Force into the Owen Stanley Range\, allowing the Australian Imperial Force to join the fight earlier? Did Templeton create doubt in the mind of the commander of the South Seas Force\, influencing an operational change for the attack on Port Moresby? A quiet and often aloof character\, Templeton’s name and actions became synonymous with Kokoda.
