SUMMARY:Defenders of the Queen: Imperial and Colonial Defence 1850 - 1901 - One Day Conference
DESCRIPTION:Registrations open NOW! \n \n \nThe period of the British colonies in Australia and especially during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901)\, saw British Army regiment garrisons until 1870 and a Royal Navy station which remained through to 1911. In the meantime\, coastal fortifications were built at key points on the Australian coastline to defend the colonies from foes\, real and imaginary. The colonial militias gradually grew larger and evolved along with the technology driving changes to weapons and equipment. Local military leaders emerged who came to fore especially after the departure of the British Army. Maritime frontier wars and Victorian Era wars developed in New Zealand\, Sudan\, China and South Africa in which Australian volunteers\, militia and infant naval forces were involved. Many of those who served in South Africa would go on to serve in World War 1. \nIn this conference\, historians and experts on the era will present on both the strategic and the tactical. It will explain how and why the Imperial strategies evolved and in turn affected colonial thinking in the day\, both land and maritime. The internal security battle at Eureka and the development of Governor La Trobe’s ‘army’ after the colony of Victoria was declared in 1851 will be examined along with the involvement of Australian volunteers and armed settlers in the New Zealand wars. A paper on the engineer who planned some of the most iconic coastal forts will be examined – and supported by a National Archives of Australia facsimile display of some of those original plans. Details of a colonial training exercise in Victoria in the late 1880s will show how local leaders and military technology had developed by the late 1880s\, as well as a discussion around some of the first mounted troops deployed to South Africa in 1899. \nDownload the Conference program here.\nView Presentation Abstracts and Presenter Biographies here.\n \n\nA special NAA exhibition – \n“The Russians are coming! DESCRIPTION:Eminent military historian Lieutenant-Colonel Rowan Tracey LLB BA (retd) will speak on the life of Irish-born Frederick Whirlpool\, including his actions in the face of enemy fire at the Battle of Jhansi (1858) during the Indian Mutiny that led belatedly to his Victoria Cross for extreme gallantry and saving the lives of colleagues.  \n \nWhirlpool was invalided out of the British East India Company Army with serious wounds\, and what would today be called post-traumatic stress disorder. \nWhirlpool migrated to Australia after the India campaign in 1859 and tried to keep his experiences secret\, before being identified and awarded his medal. On 20 June 1861 the Victorian Governor’s wife Lady Anne Maria Barkly presented the Victoria Cross to Australian resident Frederick at Albert Park in the colony of Victoria. This was the first Victoria Cross presented in Australia. Frederick died in Windsor\, New South Wales\, on 24 June 1899. DESCRIPTION:Join the Robert Menzies Institute as we host former treasurer of Australia Peter Costello for the launch of Brett Mason’s new book Saving Lieutenant Kennedy: The heroic story of the Australian who helped rescue JFK on Tuesday 31 October 2023 5:30pm – 7:00pm (formalities commence at 6:00pm). \n \nAbout The Book \nOn a moonless night in August 1943\, a US torpedo boat commanded by Lt John F Kennedy\, on patrol in Solomon Islands\, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Left clinging to wreckage within sight of Japanese encampments\, the eleven surviving members of Kennedy’s crew eventually struggled ashore on a small uninhabited island. Missing\, presumed dead\, behind enemy lines\, with no food or water\, and with several injured\, the future looked bleak for the shipwrecked Americans. Fortunately\, Australian ‘coast watcher’ Lt Reg Evans witnessed the immediate aftermath of the collision from his nearby jungle hideaway. Working under the searching eye of the Japanese military\, over the next five days Evans and two Solomon Islander scouts — Eroni Kumana and Biuku Gasa — located Kennedy and his crew and ensured their rescue. \nThis story of wartime bravery and survival helped create JFK’s legend and paved his way to the White House. It also shone a spotlight on Australia and America’s shared wartime experience. DESCRIPTION:The Chipilly Six were extraordinary men in extraordinary times.  \n \n \n  \n  \nLucas Jordan reveals a wider story of Australia’s Great War veterans as they battled a nation forgetting\, a bitter Depression\, another World War and beyond. \nOn 9 August 1918\, on high ground overlooking the Somme River\, an entire British Army Corps is held up by German machine gunners. The battle has raged for 30 hours and more than 2000 Englishmen have fallen\, for no gain. \nMeanwhile\, two Australian sergeants\, Jack Hayes and Harold Andrews\, go absent without leave and cross the Somme ahead of the British lines. Gathering weapons and four of their best mates\, Hayes and Andrews return to take on the Germans. \nThe extraordinary feats of the Chipilly Six have been overlooked and the personal stories of these diggers never before celebrated. Yet this story doesn’t end when the war does. \nLucas Jordan weaves a compelling tale of the lives of these soldiers\, chronicling their return home and years after service\, through a pandemic\, the Great Depression\, another world war and the very first Anzac Day dawn service. \nAbout the presenter\nLUCAS JORDAN grew up in Burekup in Western Australia. He holds a PhD in history from the Australian National University. Lucas spent more than a decade teaching and researching in the Kimberley\, Cape York and central Australia and co-wrote Amnesty International’s global report ‘“The land holds us”: Aboriginal peoples’ right to their traditional homelands in the Northern Territory’\, which was based on six years of collaboration and camping with the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr people of the Northern Territory. Lucas is currently a leading teacher at Western English Language School\, a secondary school for new arrivals and refugees in Melbourne\, and occasionally consults on history projects. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission\, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours. \nTheir contribution reminds us of the profound impact on and support for mental health and wellbeing that entertainment can provide our armed forces and all Australians.

Dowding helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price. It reveals the history of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people in service. \nLesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer people have been proudly defending Australia through their military service since the formation of the armed forces. Today\, anyone identifying as LGBTQ+ can serve openly in the Australian Defence Force (ADF): diversity and inclusion are values that our contemporary military actively champions and supports. It has not always been this way. It has been a long and often difficult journey for LGBTQ+ people to be recognised\, accepted\, and celebrated for their service. \nDrawing on historical research\, community consultation and collections from the Australian Queer Archives\, this immersive exhibition takes you on a journey from denial and exclusion to recognition and inclusion. \nAt its centerpiece are the personal stories and reflections of veterans and current serving ADF personnel. Their testimony speaks to the richness and diversity of experiences of LGBTQ+ people in service: highlighting their continuing journey.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 July 2023 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\n \n  \nThe presentation\nPart-time service with the militia and then reserves has been a long and honourable tradition in Australia\, often closely connecting local communities with the defence of Australia itself. The evolution of the Army\, Navy and Air Force Reserves has seen a huge number of changes\, not always for the better\, especially since World War Two. The competition between regular and reserve forces since 1948\, for resources and influence over defence thinking and applications however\, has not always been healthy for the defence forces as a whole. It was in response to a perceived loss of influence by the Reserves\, particularly by the Army Reserve that the CMF Association was formed in 1970. This evolved into the Army Reserve Association (AResA) in 1986\, and then to the Defence Reserves Association (DRA) in 1992. After 50 years however\, the integration of the reserve forces with the regular is almost complete. Indeed\, in the Navy and Air Force\, the term ‘reservist’ no longer exists – and Army is not far behind as reservists have come to be seen as part-time employees of Army\, complementing their full time equivalents. \nThe situation of ‘reservists’ today obscures the long journey to reach a more effective and efficient defence reserve force. When the CMF Association was formed by senior officers\, many of whom had fought in World War Two\, the reserve forces were seen to be under threat. In a rapidly changing world\, in the middle of the Cold War and by non-involvement in the war in Vietnam\, which was the domain of the regular professional soldiers\, there was much angst about the future of the reserves in military and political circles.\nOver coming years\, the reserves were subjected to dozens of reviews and reports leading to endless ‘fiddling’ with the structure and purpose of the reserves. The fact that the reserves today are still a vital and even more effective part of the defence forces than ever before\, can in part be laid at the feet of the DRA. Over 50 years and through all of its iterations\, the association has steadfastly and comprehensively supported and defended the reserves as they have adjusted to new approaches to war fighting\, peace keeping\, technology and doctrine. It is tempting to say that it was almost in spite of political and bureaucratic (both military and public service) ‘leadership’ that the DRA was able to shepherd the reserves through many times\, likened to being ‘eaten by moths’\, when the very existence of the reserves was in question. \nAbout the presenter\nDr Andrew Kilsby is a founder of MHHV and a professional historian. His latest book\, The Reservists: A History of the Defence Reserves Association 1970-2020\, is being published by Echo Books in 2023. Dr Kilsby is a RMC Duntroon graduate and holds a PhD in history from ADFA@UNSW. Dr Kilsby has many citizen soldier family connections\, from colonial militia through both World Wars and most recently with a family member serving with 4 CER. \nKilsby’s military history books include: Lions of the Day\, The Bisley Boys\, In the Field and On the Field: A history of Australian Army Rugby Union\, The Case of Eichengruen-Edwards and Continental Tyres\, The Riflemen: A History of the NRAA 1888-1988\, Before the Anzac Dawn – contributed chapter\, and The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928. In 2022 he convened the MHHV conference Hard Fought: Australia in the Mediterranean Theatre 1940-1945. DESCRIPTION:Since the Vietnam War\, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations.  \n \nTheir talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad. \nForces Entertainment is the special military unit that fosters relationships between the Australian Defence Force and the entertainment industry. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission\, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours. \nTheir contribution reminds us of the profound impact on and support for mental health and wellbeing that entertainment can provide our armed forces and all Australians.

Critically\, it was also one not nestled within a larger or lead nation’s logistics and administrative support\, and also the first time Australia had led such a large multi-national force. In short\, International Force East Timor was the most complex politico-strategic challenge Australia had faced\, at least since the 1940s. \nWritten from classified government sources and buttressed by hundreds of interviews with veterans and stakeholders\, this first volume in the landmark Official History of Australian Operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor — Born of Fire and Ash — is an honest\, challenging and compelling account of the 1999–2000 East Timor crisis and Australia’s response to it. It tackles the good alongside the bad\, successes and failures\, to chart a complex ‘truth’ unknown to most Australians\, then and now. \nAbout the presenter\nProfessor Craig Stockings is the Official Historian of Australian Operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor. Craig is a graduate of both the Australian Defence Force Academy\, and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon. As an infantry officer he served in a range of regimental appointments within the 3rd Battalion\, Royal Australian Regiment\, and deployed with INTERFET to East Timor in 1999–2000. Craig holds a First Class Honours Degree in History\, Masters qualifications in International Relations and Education\, and a PhD in History. Concurrent with his appointment as Official Historian\, he is a Professor of History at the University of New South Wales (Canberra). DESCRIPTION:The fourth year of World War 2 saw the German Army suffer its first major defeat at Stalingrad\, and an Allied victory in North Africa enabled an invasion of Italy which ended in its surrender. In South-East Asia\, British forces continued to engage in heavy fighting against the Japanese in Burma. \n \n \nLimited tickets still available. Registrations close 12th May 2023. BOOK NOW! \nIn Australia\, the Federal election saw the ALP under the leadership of John Curtin retain power in a landslide result and the election of the first women to Parliament. Relationships with our US allies was further strengthened with evidence of increased tactical co-operation. Increasing numbers of US forces arrived in Australia. Conscription was sanctioned and the Citizen’s Military Forces (militia) were now deemed eligible to serve outside Australia. Rationing began in earnest and the Ministry of Information stepped up its propaganda war. \nFor Australia on the military front\, our forces were involved in heavy fighting on the New Guinea battlefields\, including the defeat of the Japanese at Wau and the Huon Peninsula. Naval and air forces defended our coastal shipping from enemy sea mines and submarines. RAAF squadrons worked with US allies to defend Darwin and Northern Australia from ongoing Japanese air raids. They then combined to inflict a stunning defeat on Japanese shipping in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. Special forces were engaged in clandestine operations and the propaganda war greatly increased as significant events of the war were highlighted to continue to win hearts and minds on the home front. \nWhat conditions enabled Australia to move to the offensive against Japanese forces\, especially in the New Guinea campaigns? How did allied air forces combat Japanese incursions to the Australian mainland? What measures were used to deal with threats to our coastal shipping? How did the US Fifth Air Force and RAAF combine in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea? How did propaganda play a role in maintaining morale and also used for raising War Bonds? DESCRIPTION:Come along and enjoy a great weekend to celebrate the unveiling of their very own ‘Sandy the War Hose’ – ANZAC Hero\, Major General William Throsby Bridge’s trusted steed and the only Australian War Horse of 136\,000 to return from the first World War. \n \nSandy the War Horse was bred in old Tallangatta and will be celebrated at a Commemorative Statue Unveiling. The Australian Light Horse Troops will lead a full guard of honour consisting of more than 200 horses. \nCome along and enjoy a great weekend which includes live music\, market stalls\, a silent auction and horse events at the Tallangatta Showgrounds. \nTallangatta will then be home to a life-size bronze statue of ‘Sandy the War Horse’ by renowned sculpture artist Brett Garling.
