Dowding helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition is the first of its kind for an Australian war memorial. It reveals the history of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people in service. \nLesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer people have been proudly defending Australia through their military service since the formation of the armed forces. Today\, anyone identifying as LGBTQ+ can serve openly in the Australian Defence Force (ADF): diversity and inclusion are values that our contemporary military actively champions and supports. It has not always been this way. It has been a long and often difficult journey for LGBTQ+ people to be recognised\, accepted\, and celebrated for their service. \nDrawing on historical research\, community consultation and collections from the Australian Queer Archives\, this immersive exhibition takes you on a journey from denial and exclusion to recognition and inclusion. \nAt its centerpiece are the personal stories and reflections of veterans and current serving ADF personnel. Their testimony speaks to the richness and diversity of experiences of LGBTQ+ people in service: highlighting their continuing journey.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 July 2023 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\n \n  \nThe presentation\nPart-time service with the militia and then reserves has been a long and honourable tradition in Australia\, often closely connecting local communities with the defence of Australia itself. The evolution of the Army\, Navy and Air Force Reserves has seen a huge number of changes\, not always for the better\, especially since World War Two. The competition between regular and reserve forces since 1948\, for resources and influence over defence thinking and applications however\, has not always been healthy for the defence forces as a whole. It was in response to a perceived loss of influence by the Reserves\, particularly by the Army Reserve that the CMF Association was formed in 1970. This evolved into the Army Reserve Association (AResA) in 1986\, and then to the Defence Reserves Association (DRA) in 1992. After 50 years however\, the integration of the reserve forces with the regular is almost complete. Indeed\, in the Navy and Air Force\, the term ‘reservist’ no longer exists – and Army is not far behind as reservists have come to be seen as part-time employees of Army\, complementing their full time equivalents. \nThe situation of ‘reservists’ today obscures the long journey to reach a more effective and efficient defence reserve force. When the CMF Association was formed by senior officers\, many of whom had fought in World War Two\, the reserve forces were seen to be under threat. In a rapidly changing world\, in the middle of the Cold War and by non-involvement in the war in Vietnam\, which was the domain of the regular professional soldiers\, there was much angst about the future of the reserves in military and political circles.\nOver coming years\, the reserves were subjected to dozens of reviews and reports leading to endless ‘fiddling’ with the structure and purpose of the reserves. The fact that the reserves today are still a vital and even more effective part of the defence forces than ever before\, can in part be laid at the feet of the DRA. Over 50 years and through all of its iterations\, the association has steadfastly and comprehensively supported and defended the reserves as they have adjusted to new approaches to war fighting\, peace keeping\, technology and doctrine. It is tempting to say that it was almost in spite of political and bureaucratic (both military and public service) ‘leadership’ that the DRA was able to shepherd the reserves through many times\, likened to being ‘eaten by moths’\, when the very existence of the reserves was in question. \nAbout the presenter\nDr Andrew Kilsby is a founder of MHHV and a professional historian. His latest book\, The Reservists: A History of the Defence Reserves Association 1970-2020\, is being published by Echo Books in 2023. Dr Kilsby is a RMC Duntroon graduate and holds a PhD in history from ADFA@UNSW. Dr Kilsby has many citizen soldier family connections\, from colonial militia through both World Wars and most recently with a family member serving with 4 CER. \nKilsby’s military history books include: Lions of the Day\, The Bisley Boys\, In the Field and On the Field: A history of Australian Army Rugby Union\, The Case of Eichengruen-Edwards and Continental Tyres\, The Riflemen: A History of the NRAA 1888-1988\, Before the Anzac Dawn – contributed chapter\, and The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928. In 2022 he convened the MHHV conference Hard Fought: Australia in the Mediterranean Theatre 1940-1945. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. Critically\, it was also one not nestled within a larger or lead nation’s logistics and administrative support\, and also the first time Australia had led such a large multi-national force. It tackles the good alongside the bad\, successes and failures\, to chart a complex ‘truth’ unknown to most Australians\, then and now. \nAbout the presenter\nProfessor Craig Stockings is the Official Historian of Australian Operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor. Craig is a graduate of both the Australian Defence Force Academy\, and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon. As an infantry officer he served in a range of regimental appointments within the 3rd Battalion\, Royal Australian Regiment\, and deployed with INTERFET to East Timor in 1999–2000. Craig holds a First Class Honours Degree in History\, Masters qualifications in International Relations and Education\, and a PhD in History. Concurrent with his appointment as Official Historian\, he is a Professor of History at the University of New South Wales (Canberra). DESCRIPTION:The fourth year of World War 2 saw the German Army suffer its first major defeat at Stalingrad\, and an Allied victory in North Africa enabled an invasion of Italy which ended in its surrender. BOOK NOW! \nIn Australia\, the Federal election saw the ALP under the leadership of John Curtin retain power in a landslide result and the election of the first women to Parliament. Relationships with our US allies was further strengthened with evidence of increased tactical co-operation. Increasing numbers of US forces arrived in Australia. Conscription was sanctioned and the Citizen’s Military Forces (militia) were now deemed eligible to serve outside Australia. Rationing began in earnest and the Ministry of Information stepped up its propaganda war. \nFor Australia on the military front\, our forces were involved in heavy fighting on the New Guinea battlefields\, including the defeat of the Japanese at Wau and the Huon Peninsula. Naval and air forces defended our coastal shipping from enemy sea mines and submarines. RAAF squadrons worked with US allies to defend Darwin and Northern Australia from ongoing Japanese air raids. They then combined to inflict a stunning defeat on Japanese shipping in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. Special forces were engaged in clandestine operations and the propaganda war greatly increased as significant events of the war were highlighted to continue to win hearts and minds on the home front. \nWhat conditions enabled Australia to move to the offensive against Japanese forces\, especially in the New Guinea campaigns? How did allied air forces combat Japanese incursions to the Australian mainland? What measures were used to deal with threats to our coastal shipping? First elected in March 2016 at age 28\, Senator Paterson is the youngest Liberal ever elected to the Senate.\nSenator Paterson was appointed the Shadow Minister for Cyber Security and the Shadow Minister for Countering Foreign Interference by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton. Cyber attacks and foreign interference are two of the most serious contemporary threats to Australia’s national security. \nHe was the Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security from February 2021 until May 2022. SUMMARY:70 Years of the Korean War Truce - Keith Wolahan MP
DESCRIPTION:In this special event\, Keith Wolahan MP will discuss Australia’s involvement in the Korean War and its lessons for the modern world. \nThe Korean War is in many respects the war that never ended. This year marks 70 years since the signing of the Armistice Agreement which ended the three-year conflict in which 340 Australians lost their lives. These soldiers were part of a United Nations force which defended South Korea from an invasion from the Communist North. The conflict was the first clear flare up of the Cold War in the Asia-Pacific and the first to which the Menzies Government committed Australian ground troops. While the armistice served as an acknowledgement of a hard-fought stalemate in which the border between the two Koreas ended up in virtually the same place it had been at the outbreak of hostilities\, the respective sides have never signed a full peace treaty. Tensions between North Korea and the West remain high to this day. In many respects the conflict is a lesson that history never ends\, and that the maintenance of international peace and security is a constant work in progress. \nIn this special ANZAC Day event\, the Robert Menzies Institute is proud to host the Federal Member for Menzies\, Keith Wolahan MP for a talk on Australia’s involvement in the Korean War and its lessons for the modern world. Prior to being elected to Parliament at the 2022 election\, Keith served in the Australian Army\, completing part-time officer training at Duntroon\, reaching the rank of Captain. He qualified as a commando\, serving several periods of full-time service within Special Operations Command\, including one tour of Timor-Leste (2007) and three combat tours in Afghanistan (2008\, 2009/10\, 2014). In the 2011 Australia Day Honours\, he was decorated with a Commendation for Distinguished Service for performance of duty in action as a platoon commander.

DESCRIPTION:After the ANZAC Day March\, the Pipeclay Club invite members and guests to come together to mark this solemn day of remembrance.Special guest speaker Robert Hadler presents “Mutineers\, A True Story of Heroes and Villains”. \nAbout our Speaker: \nRobert Hadler lives in Melbourne. He is a former award-winning economics journalist who has worked in the Commonwealth Public Service\, as a political adviser\, a lobbyist for industry groups and in senior executive roles. Since 2015\, he has been a Director on Government\, corporate and not-for-profit boards. Robert has a passion for Australian military history and the stories of young men and women who lived through the major events that shaped our nation. \nSpecial guest speaker Robert Hadler presents “Mutineers\, A True Story of Heroes and Villains”\nAbout the Topic: \nMutineers is a true story of the heroes and villains who sparked the biggest controversy in the annals of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) when they led a mutiny on the battlecruiser\, HMAS Australia in Fremantle Harbour in June 1919. \nFive young teenage boys from working class suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne joined the RAN to fight in the First World War. Fate brought them together in the bowels of the battlecruiser. The leader of this small band of sailors\, Dalmorton Rudd became a war hero after he took part in a raid on a German submarine base at Zeebrugge in Belguim in 1918. His younger brother Lenny\, and his friends admired Dalmorton Rudd and followed his lead. \nHowever\, after five years in the North Sea these sailors were home sick and tired of harsh British naval discipline. Dalmorton Rudd had also lost his first wife and their child to the Spanish Flu. He was grief stricken and angry with the world. There were signs of trouble just before HMAS Australia sailed for home in April 1919 and when the battlecruiser reached Fremantle tensions reached flashpoint. \nAfter an alcohol fuelled night in Fremantle pubs\, where the five sailors drank with disaffected dockside workers\, they came back on board demanding extra shore leave. When this was rejected by the officers they went on strike and were charged with mutiny. A naval court martial in Sydney sentenced them to two years imprisonment with hard labour in Goulburn Gaol. \nThe Labor Party seized on the ‘savage sentences’ to attack the Nationalist Government several months before the December 1919 Federal election. The Prime Minister\, Billy Hughes\, and Navy Minister Sir Joseph Cook\, came back from the Paris Peace Conference to find their Government in turmoil on the issue. To avoid a damaging election debate\, Billy Hughes and Sir Joseph Cook asked the Admiralty in London to commute the prison sentences but the Sea Lords refused. So the Australian Government went over the heads of the Admiralty to their British political masters in Whitehall. \nThe Royal Navy officers leading the RAN were shocked and resigned over this political interference in naval discipline. It would require deft political management of this controversy to avoid a diplomatic rift with Great Britain that would leave the RAN in disarray. But it was also an opportunity to take control of Australia’s destiny as an independent Dominion within the British Empire. \nSome of the sailors fell by the wayside after they left Goulburn Gaol but the others survived the hardship of the Great Depression and conflict again during the Second World War to live long and happy lives. SUMMARY:Defending with Pride - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition is the first of its kind for an Australian war memorial. It reveals the history of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people in service. \nLesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer people have been proudly defending Australia through their military service since the formation of the armed forces. Today\, anyone identifying as LGBTQ+ can serve openly in the Australian Defence Force (ADF): diversity and inclusion are values that our contemporary military actively champions and supports. It has not always been this way. It has been a long and often difficult journey for LGBTQ+ people to be recognised\, accepted\, and celebrated for their service. \nDrawing on historical research\, community consultation and collections from the Australian Queer Archives\, this immersive exhibition takes you on a journey from denial and exclusion to recognition and inclusion. \nAt its centerpiece are the personal stories and reflections of veterans and current serving ADF personnel. Their testimony speaks to the richness and diversity of experiences of LGBTQ+ people in service: highlighting their continuing journey.

DESCRIPTION:Since the Vietnam War\, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations.  \n \nTheir talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad. \nForces Entertainment is the special military unit that fosters relationships between the Australian Defence Force and the entertainment industry. It recruits\, promotes\, and prepares entertainers for a taste of military life and ensures their safety in foreign war zones. \nIn addition to the well-documented performances in Vietnam\, Australian entertainers have been placed in East Timor\, Afghanistan\, Iraq\, the Solomon Islands\, Sinai and in HMAS vessels at sea\, often enduring gruelling tour schedules and the possibility of danger. They must adapt to military discipline and situations far removed from the civilian green room and stage. \nIn this special exhibition\, stories\, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond\, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue\, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission\, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours. \nTheir contribution reminds us of the profound impact on and support for mental health and wellbeing that entertainment can provide our armed forces and all Australians.

DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition explores the extraordinary history of First Peoples’ service in the Australian Defence Force. \n \nIn the early 20th century\, defence service provided an escape for First Peoples from ongoing dispossession and discrimination and was for many their first experience of equal treatment. Most were paid the same rates as their European counterparts and there was little racism on the front line. Indeed\, First Peoples service personnel felt a strong sense of continuing ancient traditions of protecting Country\, and hoped their example of service would help improve conditions for their families and communities. \nVeterans\, however\, returned to the same discrimination they had previously known. \nIn this special exhibition\, photographic portraits sourced from veterans and their families\, the Australian War Memorial\, Koorie Heritage Trust\, and the Shrine’s own collection illustrate personal stories of First Peoples’ service from the Boer War to today\, whilst interviews\, filmed in conjunction with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image\, offer insight into the ongoing effects of war service on families and individuals. \nThese stories matter to us; we know they’ll matter to you.

He specialised as a Mine Warfare Officer for Landing Craft\, Mine Hunters\, a Replenishment Ship\, Destroyer Escorts\, Frigates and Destroyers. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1999 and was posted to the New Zealand Navy Frigate Canterbury. \nDuring his career\, he deployed to East Timor\, Middle East & Solomon Islands. He was promoted to Commander in 2006 and became the Head of Operations (J3) at HQ Northern Command\, being awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal for his service.
