He has broad technical experience spanning maintenance\, design\, type certification\, and aviation safety regulations supporting Defence fixed and rotary wing aviation capabilities. \nAir Commodore Medved is an experienced aviation safety professional and was appointed as the Director General Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) in December 2020. SUMMARY:Game of Dominoes: Australia’s Security and the Cold War 1947-1991
DESCRIPTION:MHHV 5th Biennial Two-Day Conference – 13 & 14 APRIL 2024 \n \n \nThis conference will examine the Cold War period (1947-1991)\, its impact on Australia’s defence and security posture and Australia’s contribution to the Western alliance during this time.  Australia’s involvement in Asia in particular\, arising from its part in the ANZUS treaty of 1951 and in SEATO from 1954 will be examined – its role in the Malayan Emergency\, the Korean War\, konfrontasi and the Vietnam War all within the context of potential nuclear war. Australia’s Army\, Navy\, and Air Force were all engaged in this struggle\, partly against the Soviet Union but mostly against revolutionary movements in Asia supported by Communist China. Australia’s counter-intelligence operations within Australia will also be examined. \nWhat was Australia’s security position in 1947 and how did this lead to ANZUS? How did domestic politics play out in the larger anti-communist context? What drove the establishment of SEATO? Why did Australia join the UN forces in Korea? What was the Far Eastern Strategic Reserve? What were the priorities for a non-nuclear army training under a nuclear threat? How did Australia’s signals intelligence contribute? How successful was ASIO in combatting the NKVD/KGB in Australia? Why did Menzies establish ASIS in 1952?  How did Army\, Air Force and Navy respond to the new paradigms?  Was Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War important and what were the outcomes? Was the Peace Movement a communist front? How did the Soviet-CCP split affect Australia’s security? Did nuclear tests in Australia strengthen Australian defence? Did the fall of the Berlin Wall change Australia’s  security posture? SUMMARY:Beyond the 'Kantai Kessen' - Japan's Fateful Defeat in the Southwest Pacific
DESCRIPTION:In the ‘Kantai Kessen’ (decisive naval battle doctrine) the Japanese navy would win a war by fighting and winning a single\, decisive naval action.\nAt the beginning of May 1942 Japan prepared to commence a fresh wave of offensive actions in the Southwest Pacific with the ultimate aims of strategically isolating Australia and America while seeking to finally neutralise the US Pacific Fleet through the destruction of its aircraft-carrier arm. Within a year the ambitions of the Japanese Naval Staff lay in ruins\, and the ultimate fate of Japan itself was effectively sealed. \nThis presentation seeks to illustrate the core weakness of the Japanese military machine\, namely its wholesale commitment to offensive warfare\, which was exposed and deflated by the Allies in the course of the New Guinea and Solomons campaigns following the disastrous reversal of fortunes for the Imperial Japanese Navy at Midway in early June 1942. Over-ambitious strategic planning\, fractious inter-service relations between the Japanese Army and Navy\, the lack of proper logistics and supply infrastructure\, and weaknesses in the buildup of air and naval forces are identified as the core reasons why any contemplated operations against Australia other than bombing and submarine warfare were eventually untenable\, and made the defence of Japan’s Pacific island shield similarly impossible. DESCRIPTION:In March 1924 a fleet of Royal Navy ships visited Australia as part of a world-wide goodwill cruise. \nBritish Fleet met by Couta boats from the Queenscliff Fishing Fleet as it enters Port Phillip Heads at dawn during the visit to Australia. [National Library of Australia]\nThe largest and fastest battleship in the world (HMS Hood) was accompanied by HMS Repulse and four light cruisers. \nMelbourne\, then the nation’s capital\, hosted the fleet from 17th – 24th March. \nThe visit was a sensation with over 500\,000 visitors to the ships\, an RAAF flyover\, ceremonial marches\, dinners\, dances and fireworks. \nMelbourne Maritime Heritage Network together with the Royal United Services Institute of Victoria will commemorate this centenary by a free talk and exhibition at the Shrine of Remembrance at 2 pm on Tuesday 19th March 2024. \nThe speaker will be Major General (Retd) Michael O’Brien. \nAll are welcome. \nProudly supported by:

DESCRIPTION:To commemorate International Women’s Day\, one of Australia’s leading women-in-war historians\, Dr Kirsty Harris\, will give a presentation on the history behind Violet Town’s new impressive Women in War mural. \n \nThe talk will occur from 11.30 am on Saturday\, March 2 at the Community Complex in Cowslip St\, Violet Town. Morning tea will be served from 11.00 am followed by the presentation. \nErected by the Violet Town RSL Sub Branch\, the mostly black and white mural represents women who served in or supported Australia’s defence forces in time of war. \nDr Harris highlighted that International Women’s Day was the ideal time to reflect on those women who had supported or fought for their country. \n“The common refrain that women replaced men so that they could fight is long gone with female members of the military now commanding ships and flying planes\,” she said. \n“But it is important that we understand the work their forebears did\, and the role they played in creating a permanent place for women in Australia’s military and workforce.” \nThe mural\, painted by recognised mural and silo artist Tim Bowtell\, tells the story of local women connected to Violet Town and district who served\, but set in a national context. It is 17 metres long and nearly 2 metres high. \nWhile there are about 20 local women who have been identified serving in the Australian Army\, Navy\, and Airforce or on the home front\, they served only in World War I and World War II. \nFrom this starting point\, the project team created a mural to represent those who served across the spectrum – from the Anglo-Boer War to the present as well as those who helped on the home front. \n \nThe mural features portraits of both local military women and women at work on the land\, the stage and in factories. \nThe Community Complex is opposite the Ellen Frances – Violet Town Hotel/Motel. \nFor catering purposes\, RSVP by 27 February 2024 to the Violet Town RSL at president@violettownrsl.org.au \n

SUMMARY:Operation Oboe: Australian Amphibious Landings in Borneo\, May-July 1945
DESCRIPTION:A Public Lecture by Major (retd) Paul Handel\, RFD \nIn May 1945 the Australian Army launched three major amphibious assaults in Borneo. The operations were collectively known as “Oboe” and comprised the individual landings on Tarakan\, Brunei and Balikpapan. These operations were considered to be the most efficient and well planned conducted by the Australian Army. \nBorneo is surrounded by a number of waters – the South China Sea\, the Indian Ocean and others between Borneo and New Guinea. It is a volcanic island which has a rocky coastline with some beach areas. The centre of the island is mountainous. This means that farming is difficult\, so oil wells and rubber plantations are the main product of the island. \nBorneo before the Second World War was used by the Dutch for oil production and the British for the production of rubber. The Japanese invasion in 1942 was to their much needed of oil to be used in the mobility of their forces. \nBorneo was home to British and Dutch colonial persons\, as well as a Chinese population. Indigenous people had their origins in Indonesia\, then known as the Netherlands East Indies\, and from Malaya. \nThe landings in Tarakan\, Brunei and Balikpapan\, made little or no contribution to the defeat of Japan. The island had been bypassed in the planning of the Supreme Commander\, South West Pacific Area – General Douglas MacArther – whose eyes were fixed upon the liberation of The Philippines and the subsequent invasion of the Japanese mainland. \nThis presentation will look at the amphibious landings and subsequent land operations in Borneo. \nAbout the Presenter\n \nPaul Handel studied mechanical engineering after leaving school and worked for Email Ltd at Waterloo and Botany in the 1970s. He then joined a German Engineering company\, based in North Sydney\, in 1980. He was involved with large steelworks and open cut mining projects until 2000\, when the company’s operations ceased. In 2004 he joined a division of his former company as the Production and Logistics Manager for the manufacture of overhead travelling cranes\, retiring in 2016. \nHe joined the Citizen Military Forces in 1970\, and was commissioned in 1972 into the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME). A series of postings followed\, including five years as the OC of the LAD/TSS of 1/15 Royal NSW Lancers. Promoted to Major in 1981\, he served on HQ 2 Division Plans Team\, before being posted as OC 103 Field Workshop. Attendance at the Reserve Command Staff College (Senior Course) in 1987 was followed by a posting to the HQ 2nd Division Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. \nIn the middle of 1986\, he was appointed as the RAAC Tank Museum’s Honorary Research Officer. At the end of 1989 he was posted as Research Officer Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) Tank Museum\, and in February 1999 was transferred to the Army History Unit\, and became the Museum Manger of the RAAC Museum\, later Australian Army Tank Museum\, a position he held until August 2012. \nIn September 2016\, he returned to Army Reserve service and undertook a project for Army History Unit involving the sectioning of a Leopard Tank. This project was undertaken by the RAN Fleet Support Unit (SE) at Garden Island in Sydney. The sectioned tank is now an exhibit at the Tank Museum\, Puckapunyal. \nHe is a volunteer at the Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering and the Australian Army Tank Museum. \nHe is the author of three books on Australian armoured history – Fifty Years of the RAAC 1948 to 1998; Dust\, Sand and Jungle – A History of Australian Armour 1927 to 1948; and The Vital Factor – The History of the 2/6th Australian Armoured Regiment 1941 to 1945.

During his more than 30 years’ service\, he has served in an extensive range of command appointments. As an Infantry officer he has commanded at all levels within the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) and was the Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion RAR from 2008 to 2009. \nHe was the Commander of the 7th Combat Brigade in Brisbane\, one of Army’s three combat brigades\, from 2020 to 2021. On promotion to Major General in 2022 he was appointed the Head of Armoured Vehicles. DESCRIPTION:The cancelled rescue mission that sacrificed Sandakan POWs to the Death Marches. \nWednesday 21 February 2024 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) \n \n \nThe chain of events that led to the death of over 2\,500 Prisoners of War – one of Australia’s worst wartime tragedies – the cancellation of the rescue mission Operation Kingfisher.\nFinally\, the true story of why the Sandakan POWs of World War II were not rescued despite a fully planned and resourced operation – including men\, aircraft and naval vessels – all equipped to carry out the rescue mission. \nThere have been several published theories on Operation Kingfisher which explore if the plan really existed\, why it was cancelled and who was to blame for its cancellation. For the first time\, Operation Kingfisher analyses the effects government policy and the relationships of Churchill\, Roosevelt and Curtin had on the mission and its final outcome. \nUsing recently released archival documents\, the author uncovers the mistakes made by Allied governments and special forces in Borneo that triggered the Death Marches Number 2 and Number 3. It reveals the mistaken intelligence which caused the cancellation of the rescue mission of the POWs at the Sandakan POW camp – a decision that ultimately resulted in their deaths. \nThe author discloses the actual chain of events that led to the tragic sacrifice of all but six survivors of the Sandakan POW camp. \n \n  \n  \nAbout the presenter\nGary Followill is a successful business owner of an international agricultural import/export company\, turned military historian and writer. \nHe has a lifelong interest in history and\, in 2010\, commenced a Master of Art degree in Military History at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Operation Kingfisher follows years of research at archives in Australia\, Great Britain\, and the United States of America. \nGary uses previously unseen and recently released archival files to find the real story of the cancellation of the Sandakan POW rescue mission – Operation Kingfisher. \nHis findings are completely different from previous theories on the reason over 2\,500 POWs lost their lives on the Death Marches. SUMMARY:Fighting Mac Mckenzie & other ANZAC Chaplains of WW1
DESCRIPTION:The legendary William McKenzie’s tireless work as a Salvation Army Chaplain among the Anzacs in World War I earned him the nickname ‘Fighting Mac’. \n \nOn the outbreak of war McKenzie applied for a chaplaincy immediately and joined the AIF\, attached to the 4th Battalion. He was one of the first chaplains ashore at Gallipoli. He lumped stretchers and carries water for months on end as well as tending the wounded and burying the dead. In France and Belgium he continued to live in the front line with the troops. McKenzie was at Pozieres\, Bullecourt\, Mouquet Farm\, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele. What makes McKenzie’s reputation incredible is that he embodied almost everything that the typical digger loved to hate. He railed against booze\, brothels\, betting and bad language\, and ran frequent evangelistic campaigns for the Anzacs. Despite these apparent disadvantages Fighting Mac was worshipped and revered by the soldiers — becoming the man who best represented the Anzac ideal. In this talk\, historian Dr Daniel Reynaud\, author of The Man the Anzacs Revered: The Legendary William “Fighting Mac” McKenzie\, Anzac Chaplain will tell Fighting Mac’s story and discuss the role and contributions of other Anzac chaplains of the First World War. \n  \nDr Daniel Reynaud is an authority on Australian Great War social history\, publishing books on its cinema (Celluloid Anzacs)\, wartime spirituality (Anzac Spirituality; The Man the Anzacs Revered; The Anzacs\, Religion and God) and Anzac food (The Anzac Table)\, as well as many book chapters and articles on similar themes. He initiated the partial reconstruction of Australia’s first Gallipoli movie (The Hero of the Dardanelles\, 1915/2015)\, and has authored and fronted an award-winning series of documentaries on the Anzacs and religion. He is Emeritus Professor of History at Avondale University. They served in the Atlantic and Arctic convoys\, Combined Operations which included the amphibious landings\, covert operations and mine-sweeping. Ten volunteers distinguished themselves in Rendering Mines Safe. Many towards the end of the war returned to Australia and served with the Royal Australian Navy in South East Asia. As a cohort\, they are probably the most highly decorated Australian servicemen. \nThe Yachties was launched by Vice Admiral Peter Jones AO DSC (Retd)\, President of the Australian Naval Institute at the 2023 Goldrick Seminar in the Adams Auditorium\, Australian Defence Force Academy on 19 October 2023. \nChief of Navy\, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AO was Keynote speaker and ensured that he was in photos taken with the author and the Yachties’ families in attendance. \nIt was a very emotional and also poignant occasion for the author and the families concerned. Later that day the Yachties were remembered at the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. The first casualty. Ordinary Seaman Bill McGregor who was killed in an air-raid on 27 April 1941 in Portsmouth Barracks was the Yachtie who represented the volunteers on the day.

For a while we stopped being ordinary blokes and became blood-lusted creatures.’\nMarch\, 1941: 40\,000 Australian and New Zealand troops are rushed to Greece in a desperate attempt to stop the Wehrmacht overrunning the country. Most of them overseas for the first time in their lives\, they seek excitement and adventure. What they get are experiences they could never have imagined. \nThe operation is doomed to fail\, but not before the Aussies and Kiwis succeed in holding up the German advance and evacuating thousands\, mainly to Crete\, where Hitler next sets his sights. As the Nazis assault the island\, they deploy a devastating new weapon of invasion – paratroopers − for the very first time\, meeting desperate resistance as the Allies fight for their lives. \nThis talk will delve into the experiences of the soldiers who fought in the mountains and villages of Greece\, and faced entrapment and death on Crete. SUMMARY:Defenders of the Queen: Imperial and Colonial Defence 1850 - 1901 - One Day Conference
DESCRIPTION:Registrations open NOW! \n \n \nThe period of the British colonies in Australia and especially during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901)\, saw British Army regiment garrisons until 1870 and a Royal Navy station which remained through to 1911. In the meantime\, coastal fortifications were built at key points on the Australian coastline to defend the colonies from foes\, real and imaginary. The colonial militias gradually grew larger and evolved along with the technology driving changes to weapons and equipment. Local military leaders emerged who came to fore especially after the departure of the British Army. Maritime frontier wars and Victorian Era wars developed in New Zealand\, Sudan\, China and South Africa in which Australian volunteers\, militia and infant naval forces were involved. Many of those who served in South Africa would go on to serve in World War 1. \nIn this conference\, historians and experts on the era will present on both the strategic and the tactical. It will explain how and why the Imperial strategies evolved and in turn affected colonial thinking in the day\, both land and maritime. The internal security battle at Eureka and the development of Governor La Trobe’s ‘army’ after the colony of Victoria was declared in 1851 will be examined along with the involvement of Australian volunteers and armed settlers in the New Zealand wars. A paper on the engineer who planned some of the most iconic coastal forts will be examined – and supported by a National Archives of Australia facsimile display of some of those original plans. Details of a colonial training exercise in Victoria in the late 1880s will show how local leaders and military technology had developed by the late 1880s\, as well as a discussion around some of the first mounted troops deployed to South Africa in 1899. \nDownload the Conference program here.\nView Presentation Abstracts and Presenter Biographies here.\n \n\nA special NAA exhibition – \n“The Russians are coming! DESCRIPTION:Eminent military historian Lieutenant-Colonel Rowan Tracey LLB BA (retd) will speak on the life of Irish-born Frederick Whirlpool\, including his actions in the face of enemy fire at the Battle of Jhansi (1858) during the Indian Mutiny that led belatedly to his Victoria Cross for extreme gallantry and saving the lives of colleagues.  \n \nWhirlpool was invalided out of the British East India Company Army with serious wounds\, and what would today be called post-traumatic stress disorder. \nWhirlpool migrated to Australia after the India campaign in 1859 and tried to keep his experiences secret\, before being identified and awarded his medal. On 20 June 1861 the Victorian Governor’s wife Lady Anne Maria Barkly presented the Victoria Cross to Australian resident Frederick at Albert Park in the colony of Victoria. This was the first Victoria Cross presented in Australia. Frederick died in Windsor\, New South Wales\, on 24 June 1899. DESCRIPTION:Join the Robert Menzies Institute as we host former treasurer of Australia Peter Costello for the launch of Brett Mason’s new book Saving Lieutenant Kennedy: The heroic story of the Australian who helped rescue JFK on Tuesday 31 October 2023 5:30pm – 7:00pm (formalities commence at 6:00pm). \n \nAbout The Book \nOn a moonless night in August 1943\, a US torpedo boat commanded by Lt John F Kennedy\, on patrol in Solomon Islands\, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Left clinging to wreckage within sight of Japanese encampments\, the eleven surviving members of Kennedy’s crew eventually struggled ashore on a small uninhabited island. Missing\, presumed dead\, behind enemy lines\, with no food or water\, and with several injured\, the future looked bleak for the shipwrecked Americans. Fortunately\, Australian ‘coast watcher’ Lt Reg Evans witnessed the immediate aftermath of the collision from his nearby jungle hideaway. Working under the searching eye of the Japanese military\, over the next five days Evans and two Solomon Islander scouts — Eroni Kumana and Biuku Gasa — located Kennedy and his crew and ensured their rescue. \nThis story of wartime bravery and survival helped create JFK’s legend and paved his way to the White House. It also shone a spotlight on Australia and America’s shared wartime experience. Gathering weapons and four of their best mates\, Hayes and Andrews return to take on the Germans. \nThe extraordinary feats of the Chipilly Six have been overlooked and the personal stories of these diggers never before celebrated. Yet this story doesn’t end when the war does. \nLucas Jordan weaves a compelling tale of the lives of these soldiers\, chronicling their return home and years after service\, through a pandemic\, the Great Depression\, another world war and the very first Anzac Day dawn service. \nAbout the presenter\nLUCAS JORDAN grew up in Burekup in Western Australia. He holds a PhD in history from the Australian National University. Lucas spent more than a decade teaching and researching in the Kimberley\, Cape York and central Australia and co-wrote Amnesty International’s global report ‘“The land holds us”: Aboriginal peoples’ right to their traditional homelands in the Northern Territory’\, which was based on six years of collaboration and camping with the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr people of the Northern Territory.
