The book will be formally launched by the Hon Steve Bracks\, former Premier of Victoria. \nThere is no charge for attending this event. \nJim Claven’s Grecian Adventure\nGrecian Adventure takes the reader on a journey across Greece in April and May 1941\, following the Anzac trail throughout the Greek campaign\, from the northern Greek battlefields of Vevi and Servia\, through Brallos and Corinth\, to Kalamata and the Mani\, and on to Crete. \nThe reader is guided by the individual stories and photographs of some of the Australian soldiers who served in that desperate and fateful campaign. The soldiers featured include Victorians Private Syd Grant and Sergeant Alfred Huggins. A feature of the book is the reproduction of nearly 100 original photographs of Greece during the campaign\, from the collections of Syd and Alfred\, two collections which the author assisted in their donation to Melbourne’s State Library of Victoria. The War Game examines why and how Australia went to war\, and how it managed the nation’s nine conflicts between the First World War and the Iraq War. It explores the relationships between some of the most dominant political leaders in Australian history – Billy Hughes\, Robert Menzies\, John Curtin\, Harold Holt\, John Gorton\, Bob Hawke and John Howard – and their top military commanders\, including William Birdwood\, John Monash\, Brudenell White\, Thomas Blamey\, Vernon Sturdee\, Douglas MacArthur\, Sydney Rowell\, Frederick Scherger\, John Wilton\, Peter Gration and Peter Cosgrove. \nThe War Game raises important questions about the process of war leadership. SUMMARY:The Almost War: The Empire and the Chanak Crisis\, 1922
DESCRIPTION:September this year will be the centenary of the Chanak Crisis of 1922\, when Lloyd George and Churchill almost took the Empire to war with Kemal Ataturk’s Nationalists—Gallipoli 2.0 they’d probably be calling it today.  \n \nThe event was characterised in Australia particularly through the enthusiasm of the ex-Diggers\, and how they were lining up in their thousands around Australia for another go at the Turks. \nThis presentation will consider what Australia’s military preparedness for war was at that time. The culmination of the crisis\, a few months later\, saw Prime Minister Billy Hughes declaring that if Ataturk touched the ANZAC war graves on the Peninsula—which he threatened to do—Australia would be prepared to go to war alone\, and drag Britain with it. Nine days later\, Hughes was out of office. \nThis presentation not only shows how in 1922\, just as in 1914\, Australian men lined up in their thousands across the nation to enlist\, but also how Hughes came close to splitting the Empire over the issue of who controlled Dominion defence and foreign policy\, and whether Britain\, in the aftermath of the Great War\, could ever again dictate to the Dominions whether they could—or could not—choose to go to war. \nDr Paul Bartrop is a multi-award-winning scholar of the Holocaust and genocide. Until December 2020 he was Professor of History and Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Research at Florida Gulf Coast University\, Fort Myers\, Florida. He is now Professor Emeritus of History there\, and Principal Fellow in History at the University of Melbourne. He has also held numerous other positions at Stockton University\, New Jersey; the University of South Australia; Northern Arizona University; and Virginia Commonwealth University. \nHe is the author\, co-author\, and editor of 30 books\, the most recent of which include The Holocaust and Australia: Refugees\, Rejection\, and Memory (2022); The Holocaust: The Essential Reference Guide (2022); The Routledge History of the Second World War (2022); Children of the Holocaust (2020); The Holocaust: An Encyclopedia and Document Collection (co-editor\, which won the Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award\, 2017). \nHe is currently editing The Routledge History of the First World War\, among many other projects. DESCRIPTION:Visit East Malvern RSL on to view the 80th Anniversary of Kokoda-exhibition. \n \nThe exhibition is curated by Neil Sharkey from the Shrine of Remembrance\, Melbourne and follows on from his work during the seventieth anniversary of Kokoda in 2012. On display will be many artifacts and memorabilia from private collections including that of David Howell from Kokoda Historical\, the 2/14\, 2/16 and 39th Battalion Associations. Of particular note with be the amazing portrait of Bruce Kingsbury VC by Melbourne artist George Petrou OAM. There will also be a contemporary photographic study of the Kokoda Track by Dr Clodagh Mulcahy. \n  \nThere is no charge to attend the exhibition which will run from 21 July and 12 November 2022. \nWe hope you can join us at this significant occasion as we remember all those who fought on Kokoda and in particular those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Damien Kingsbury was the Director of the Master of International and Community Development Course\, held a Personal Chair and was Professor of International Politics until he retired from Deakin at the end of 2020. \nTOPIC: Australia and East Timor. \nDamien is Deputy-Chair of the Balibo House Trust\, a small NGO operating in Timor-Leste\, where he has worked extensively since the mid-1990s\, and was a board member with the Australia Myanmar Institute. Damien coordinated the largest international observer group to Timor-Leste’s 1999 ballot for independence\, and to Timor-Leste’s elections in 2007\, 2012\, 2017 and 2018\, and to Myanmar’s elections in 2015. \nHe was adviser to the Aceh peace talks\, which ended three decades of separatist war with a democratic outcome and has advised the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on its recent peace agreement and in 2013 brokered a peace agreement between warring factions in the northeast of India. \nHe has published more than two dozen books on political and security matters\, more recently focusing on global issues and is a regular national and international media commentator on international affairs\, including his weekly ‘What in the World’ on ABC Victoria. \nCoffee and Tea from 12.00 pm. DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition explores the extraordinary history of First Peoples’ service in the Australian Defence Force. \n \nIn the early 20th century\, defence service provided an escape for First Peoples from ongoing dispossession and discrimination and was for many their first experience of equal treatment. Most were paid the same rates as their European counterparts and there was little racism on the front line. Indeed\, First Peoples service personnel felt a strong sense of continuing ancient traditions of protecting Country\, and hoped their example of service would help improve conditions for their families and communities. \nVeterans\, however\, returned to the same discrimination they had previously known. \nIn this special exhibition\, photographic portraits sourced from veterans and their families\, the Australian War Memorial\, Koorie Heritage Trust\, and the Shrine’s own collection illustrate personal stories of First Peoples’ service from the Boer War to today\, whilst interviews\, filmed in conjunction with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image\, offer insight into the ongoing effects of war service on families and individuals. \nThese stories matter to us; we know they’ll matter to you.

SUMMARY:Medical fears of the malingering soldier: ‘Phony cronies’ & the Repat in 1960s Australia
DESCRIPTION:The fear of the malingering soldier or veteran has existed in Australia since its first nationwide military venture in South Africa. \n \nThe establishment of the Repatriation Department in 1917 saw the medical\, military and political fields work collectively\, to some extent\, to support hundreds of thousands of men who returned from their military service wounded or ill. \nOver the next decades\, the medical profession occasionally criticised the Repatriation Department’s alleged laxness towards soldier recipients of military pensions\, particularly those with less visible war-related psychiatric conditions. In 1963 this reached a crescendo when a group of Australian doctors drew battle lines in the correspondence pages of the Medical Journal of Australia\, accusing the Repatriation Department of directing a ‘national scandal’\, and provoking responses by both the Minister for Repatriation and the Chairman of the War Pensions Assessment Appeal Tribunal. \nAlthough this controversy and its aftermath do allow for closer investigation of the inner workings of the Repatriation Department\, the words of the doctors themselves about ‘phony cronies’\, ‘deadbeats’ and ‘drongoes’ also reveal how the medical fear of the malingering soldier\, and particularly the traumatised soldier-malingerer\, lingered into the early 1960s and beyond. This paper will analyse the medical conceptualisation of the traumatised soldier in the 1960s in relation to historical conceptions of malingering\, the increasingly tenuous position of psychiatry\, as well as the socio-medical ‘sick role’\, and will explore possible links between the current soldier and veteran suicide crisis in Australia. \nEffie Karageorgos is Lecturer in History at the University of Newcastle and Deputy Convenor of the UON Future of Madness Network. Her research focuses on histories of conflict\, gender and psychiatry. DESCRIPTION:Gold Walkley winner Andrew Quilty sits down with journalist Tracey Curro to discuss his new book August in Kabul: America’s last days in Afghanistan. \n \nAs night fell on 15 August 2021\, the Taliban entered Kabul\, capital of Afghanistan. As cities and towns fell in rapid succession\, Western troops and embassy staff scrambled to flee a country of which its government had lost control. To the world\, Kabul in August looked like Saigon in 1975. \nAndrew Quilty was one of a handful of Western journalists who stayed in Kabul as the city fell. Of particular note with be the amazing portrait of Bruce Kingsbury VC by Melbourne artist George Petrou OAM. DESCRIPTION:The War Game: Australian war leadership from Gallipoli to Iraq with David Horner. \n \nDavid Horner\, AM graduated from the Royal Military College\, Duntroon in 1969. He served an eight-month tour in Vietnam as a platoon commander in the 3rd Battalion\, The Royal Australian Regiment. He was a visiting fellow with the Department of History at the Australian Defence Force Academy from 1985 to 1988\, and a member of the directing staff at the Joint Services Staff College in 1988 to 1990. Horner retired from the full-time army in 1991 on gaining a position with the Australian National University (and transferred to the Australian Army Reserve\, with which he served for more than a decade. He was the inaugural commanding officer of the Land Warfare Studies Centre (1998–2002) and retired with the rank of colonel. \nHe has a Diploma of Military Studies from Duntroon\, a Master of Arts (Honours) from the University of New South Wales and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the ANU in 1980. His doctoral thesis\, supervised by Robert O’Neill and completed while a serving major in the army\, concerned Australian and Allied strategy in the Pacific War and formed the basis for his second book\, High Command: Australia and Allied Strategy\, 1939–1945 (1982). \nHe is an emeritus professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre\, Australian National University. He is the author or editor of 37 books on Australian military history\, defence and intelligence\, including The Spy Catchers\, SAS Phantoms of War\, Duty First\, Blamey\, and Battles that shaped Australia. David has been the Official Historian of ASIO and of Australian Peacekeeping\, Humanitarian and Post-Cold War Operations. DESCRIPTION:When war broke out in the Northern Hemisphere in 1939\, the British called upon their Australian allies for support. \n \n \n\nThe Australian government responded by sending five navy destroyers – HMAS Stuart\, Vendetta\, Vampire\, Voyager and Waterhen. \nThese were old ships\, built for battle in WWI and discharged from official duty in peacetime to see out their old age on Australian shores. But despite the Nazi propaganda minister\, Joseph Goebbels’ sneers that they were a “a consignment of junk\,” a load of “scrap iron”\, these ships were tough and well built\, each with a 150 strong crew of seafaring men. \nAs France fell to the Nazis in June 1940 and in the face of a powerful Italian enemy fleet\, the British Mediterranean Fleet and these five Australian destroyers found themselves in a David vs Goliath situation. \nYet\, the flotilla remained fearless. They escorted troops and supply convoys\, hunted for submarines and bombarded enemy coasts. \nThis Australian squadron rescued thousands of soldiers when the Nazis invaded Greece and valiantly fought in the last great fleet action between battleships that the world would ever see\, the Battle of Matapan in March in 1941. \nThe Australian destroyer HMAS Waterhen was sunk by an Italian dive bomber on the ferry run to Tobruk – the first Australian warship to be lost to enemy action in WW2. \nA captivating retelling of this valiant contribution to the war\, The Scrap Iron Flotilla is cemented in Australian naval legend. Though\, at its centre it is a story of human bravery and defiance\, brought to life by Carlton’s exceptional storytelling and passion. \nAbout the presenter  \nIn a working life of more than 50 years\, Mike Carlton became one of Australia’s best-known media figures. He has been a radio and television news and current affairs reporter\, foreign correspondent\, radio host and newspaper columnist. \nHe was an ABC war correspondent in Vietnam in 1967 and 1970\, and for three years was the ABC’s Bureau Chief in Jakarta. He also reported for the ABC from London\, New York and major Asian capitals. In television\, he was one of the original reporters on the ABC’s ground-breaking This Day Tonight in the 1970s. He also worked for Nine Network News\, and A Current Affair. \nIn 1980 Mike turned to talk radio\, first at Sydney’s 2GB with a top-rating breakfast program\, and then for four years in London at Newstalk 97.3FM\, where he won a coveted Sony Radio Academy award in 1993 for Britain’s best talk breakfast show. His radio satire on current affairs\, Friday News Review\, was “must listening” in Australia and the UK. \nIn television\, he reported and hosted Indonesia: A Reporter Returns\, a three-part documentary for SBS; he worked on Radio 2UE as a broadcaster for many years and wrote a long-standing column for the Sydney Morning Herald. \n \n\n  \nThe book \nIn his fourth book on Australian naval history\, respected journalist and media commentator Mike Carlton chronicles the heroic story of a small\, aging squadron of destroyers\, and their victories and losses in the Mediterranean during WWII. \nThe Scrap Iron Flotilla is rigorously researched with source material\, diaries\, and letters\, providing a richness typical to Mike’s writing.

He is a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute in Kviv\, a public institution affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to strengthen Ukraine’s international standing through the means of cultural diplomacy. \nHe has a MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA and MA from the National University of Kviv. \nMr Myroshnychenko has over 20 years’ experience in strategic communications and government relations\, working with the Ukrainian government\, NGOs and Ukrainian clients in Washington\, London\, Brussels\, Frankfurt\, Davos and the Gulf. \nMr Myroshnychenko was the co-founder of the news agency\, Ukraine Crisis Media\, and the CEO/Partner of CFC Big Ideas\, an international communications consultancy. He has been a frequent foreign policy commentator and has often spoken on the topics of public diplomacy\, national branding\, lobbying and advocacy\, international trade\, propaganda and disinformation. \n  \nThe Canberra Weekly of 8th April wrote: \nHis journey to Canberra feels like something out of a movie – after applying for the position of Ambassador and being selected in record time\, seeing the dramatic change in his country\, and fleeing to Romania in order to leave Ukraine\, here he is. \n“It’s been a crazy month to be frank. I still can’t believe it’s happening to me. I couldn’t come from Ukraine directly; I came from Romania because there’s no flights out of Ukraine. I was based in Kyiv when the war started. We tried to escape for two days but we couldn’t get out of the city because there was traffic jams and no fuel\,” recalls Mr Myroshnychenko. \n“We then went to my hometown and several days later my wife asked me to take her to Romania with our 18-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. So\, I drove her to the border and they crossed it on foot. They were there for three weeks and once I got the appointment and I picked up the credentials\, I went to Romania\, and we flew out to Australia. \n“It should have taken about six months for this procedure to take place – if it wasn’t for the war\, I would have come here in June. I was supposed to be in Ukraine meeting people\, getting instructions and requirements… but it’s war now.” \nI’ve received a very warm welcome here. I’d actually never been to Australia before. I’ve lived in the US\, the UK in London\, and Canada\, and I’m trying to figure out who Australians are similar to\, but I haven’t yet\, to be frank\,” he smiled.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 22 June 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) Online via Zoom.\n \n\nThe presentation\nBarrister Don Farrands QC became interested in the story of his grandfather Nelson Ferguson when his mother shared some old long-forgotten diaries of her father and his sketches and paintings during WWI\, describing the daily life of a stretcher-bearer. \nNelson Ferguson\, from Ballarat\, was a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front in France in World War I. He survived the dangers of stretcher-bearing in some of Australia’s most horrific battles: the Somme\, Bullecourt\, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux. \nBut in April 1918\, at Villers-Bretonneux\, he was severely gassed. His eyes were traumatised\, his lungs damaged. \nFerguson returned to Australia and despite the damage to his eyes\, took-up a position as a disabled art teacher at the Working Men’s College\, Melbourne (now RMIT). \nBy the late 1950s\, Ferguson’s art teaching career had ended as his sight had by that time completely failed him. \nCourageously enduring the terrible long-term consequences of war\, he was nevertheless able to assist his son and son-in-law in their stained-glass window business conducted in Ferguson’s back-yard\, producing wonderful windows installed in churches across Victoria and elsewhere. \nIn 1968\, the Repatriation Department contacted him with the possibility of surgery to replace his corneas. By the miracle of science and providence\, Nelson’s eyesight was fully restored\, allowing him to once again see the beauty around him\, including the churches windows he had assisted in making. Ferguson died in 1976. \nThis story will stir your soul.\n \n\n \nAbout the presenter \nDon Farrands QC is the grandson of NH Ferguson. Don is a commercial barrister\, chartered accountant\, and company director. He has significant and varied experience in law\, commerce\, the arts\, and community organisations including in the disability sector. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 27 April 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\n\nMutineers is a true story of the heroes and villains who sparked the biggest controversy in the annals of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) when they led a mutiny on the battlecruiser\, HMAS Australia in 1919. \n \n \n\nFive young teenage boys from working class suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne joined the RAN to fight in the First World War. Fate brought them together in the bowels of the battlecruiser. The leader of this small band of sailors\, Dalmorton Rudd became a war hero after he took part in a raid on a German submarine base at Zeebrugge in Belguim in 1918. His younger brother Lenny\, and his friends admired Dalmorton Rudd and followed his lead. \nHowever\, after five years in the North Sea these sailors were home sick and tired of harsh British naval discipline. Dalmorton Rudd had also lost his first wife and their child to the Spanish Flu. He was grief stricken and angry with the world. There were signs of trouble just before HMAS Australia sailed for home in April 1919 and when the battlecruiser reached Fremantle tensions reached flashpoint. After an alcohol fuelled night in Fremantle pubs\, where the five sailors drank with disaffected dockside workers\, they came back on board demanding extra shore leave. When this was rejected by the officers they went on strike and were charged with mutiny. A naval court martial in Sydney sentenced them to two years imprisonment with hard labour in Goulburn Gaol. \nThe Labor Party seized on the ‘savage sentences’ to attack the Nationalist Government several months before the December 1919 Federal election. The Prime Minister\, Billy Hughes\, and Navy Minister Sir Joseph Cook\, came back from the Paris Peace Conference to find their Government in turmoil on the issue. To avoid a damaging election debate\, Billy Hughes and Sir Joseph Cook asked the Admiralty in London to commute the prison sentences but the Sea Lords refused. So the Australian Government went over the heads of the Admiralty to their British political masters in Whitehall. The Royal Navy officers leading the RAN were shocked and resigned over this political interference in naval discipline. It would require deft political management of this controversy to avoid a diplomatic rift with Great Britain that would leave the RAN in disarray. But it was also an opportunity to take control of Australia’s destiny as an independent Dominion within the British Empire. \nSome of the sailors fell by the wayside after they left Goulburn Gaol but the others survived the hardship of the Great Depression and conflict again during the Second World War to live long and happy lives. This is their story. \n \n\nAbout the presenter \nHome \n \nRobert Hadler is a former award-winning economics journalist and foreign correspondent who also worked in the Commonwealth public service\, as a political advisor\, for industry and lobby groups and as a senior executive in some of Australia’s biggest companies. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 15 February 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \nAt the end of the session\, Harry will take questions on the book as well as any questions related to the SAS. \n  \n \n\nThe presentation\nAnthony ‘Harry’ Moffitt spent more than twenty years in the SAS. His decades of service and his multiple tours in East Timor\, Iraq and Afghanistan made him one of the regiment’s most experienced and recognised figures. \nAlongside the SAS\, Harry’s other lifetime love is cricket. An improvised game of cricket was often the circuit-breaker Harry and his team needed after the tension of operations. He began a tradition of organising matches wherever he was sent\, whether it was in the mountains of East Timor with a fugitive rebel leader\, or on the dusty streets of Baghdad\, or in exposed Forward Operating Bases in the hills of Afghanistan. Soldiers\, locals and even visiting politicians played in these spontaneous yet often bridge-building games. \nAs part of the tradition\, Harry also started to take a cricket bat with him on operational tours\, eleven of them in total. They’d often go outside the wire with him and end up signed by those he met or fought alongside. These eleven bats form the basis for Harry’s extraordinary memoir. It’s a book about combat\, and what it takes to serve in one of the world’s most elite formations. It’s a book about the toll that war takes on soldiers and their loved ones. And it’s a book about the healing power of cricket\, and how a game can break down borders in even the most desperate of circumstances. \n \n\nAbout the presenter\nAnthony ‘Harry’ Moffitt recently retired from the Australian Defence Force after almost thirty years\, most of which was spent with Australia’s elite Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment as a Team Commander and Team Specialist. He has served in eleven active deployments\, including being wounded in action in 2008. Harry completed his time with the SAS as its Human Performance Manager. He’s a Registered Psychologist and runs a human performance consultancy\, Stotan Group\, working with sports teams\, the military and industry.
