DESCRIPTION:Visit East Malvern RSL on to view the 80th Anniversary of Kokoda-exhibition. \n \nThe exhibition is curated by Neil Sharkey from the Shrine of Remembrance\, Melbourne and follows on from his work during the seventieth anniversary of Kokoda in 2012. On display will be many artifacts and memorabilia from private collections including that of David Howell from Kokoda Historical\, the 2/14\, 2/16 and 39th Battalion Associations. Of particular note with be the amazing portrait of Bruce Kingsbury VC by Melbourne artist George Petrou OAM. There will also be a contemporary photographic study of the Kokoda Track by Dr Clodagh Mulcahy. \n  \nThere is no charge to attend the exhibition which will run from 21 July and 12 November 2022. \nWe hope you can join us at this significant occasion as we remember all those who fought on Kokoda and in particular those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

These have now eased and we are looking at getting back to regular addresses. \nThe first of the addresses\, on TUESDSAY 19th July\, will be by His Excellency the Ukranian Ambassador. More details about His Excellency are to be found below. \nAs usual\, talks will be held at ANZAC House\, 4 Collins St\, Melbourne. Tea and coffee willl be available from noon with the talk commencing at 12.30 hrs. We hope to have light refreshmemts available afterwards. \nPlease note that this is a TUESDAY address and not our normal Thursday date. \nDue to limited seating\, please contact the Secretary (secretary@rusivic.org.au) to book a seat. \n  \nHE Vasyl Myroshnychenko\, Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia \nHis Excellency took up his position in Canberra in April this year. He is a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute in Kviv\, a public institution affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to strengthen Ukraine’s international standing through the means of cultural diplomacy. \nHe has a MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA and MA from the National University of Kviv. \nMr Myroshnychenko has over 20 years’ experience in strategic communications and government relations\, working with the Ukrainian government\, NGOs and Ukrainian clients in Washington\, London\, Brussels\, Frankfurt\, Davos and the Gulf. \nMr Myroshnychenko was the co-founder of the news agency\, Ukraine Crisis Media\, and the CEO/Partner of CFC Big Ideas\, an international communications consultancy. He has been a frequent foreign policy commentator and has often spoken on the topics of public diplomacy\, national branding\, lobbying and advocacy\, international trade\, propaganda and disinformation. \n  \nThe Canberra Weekly of 8th April wrote: \nHis journey to Canberra feels like something out of a movie – after applying for the position of Ambassador and being selected in record time\, seeing the dramatic change in his country\, and fleeing to Romania in order to leave Ukraine\, here he is. \n“It’s been a crazy month to be frank. I still can’t believe it’s happening to me. I couldn’t come from Ukraine directly; I came from Romania because there’s no flights out of Ukraine. I was based in Kyiv when the war started. We tried to escape for two days but we couldn’t get out of the city because there was traffic jams and no fuel\,” recalls Mr Myroshnychenko. \n“We then went to my hometown and several days later my wife asked me to take her to Romania with our 18-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. So\, I drove her to the border and they crossed it on foot. They were there for three weeks and once I got the appointment and I picked up the credentials\, I went to Romania\, and we flew out to Australia. \n“It should have taken about six months for this procedure to take place – if it wasn’t for the war\, I would have come here in June. I was supposed to be in Ukraine meeting people\, getting instructions and requirements… but it’s war now.” \nI’ve received a very warm welcome here. I’d actually never been to Australia before. I’ve lived in the US\, the UK in London\, and Canada\, and I’m trying to figure out who Australians are similar to\, but I haven’t yet\, to be frank\,” he smiled.

SUMMARY:‘Courage and Compassion: A Stretcher-bearer’s Journey from No-man’s Land and Beyond’ - Speaker: Don Farrands QC
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 22 June 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) Online via Zoom.\n \n\nThe presentation\nBarrister Don Farrands QC became interested in the story of his grandfather Nelson Ferguson when his mother shared some old long-forgotten diaries of her father and his sketches and paintings during WWI\, describing the daily life of a stretcher-bearer. \nNelson Ferguson\, from Ballarat\, was a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front in France in World War I. He survived the dangers of stretcher-bearing in some of Australia’s most horrific battles: the Somme\, Bullecourt\, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux. \nBut in April 1918\, at Villers-Bretonneux\, he was severely gassed. His eyes were traumatised\, his lungs damaged. \nFerguson returned to Australia and despite the damage to his eyes\, took-up a position as a disabled art teacher at the Working Men’s College\, Melbourne (now RMIT). \nBy the late 1950s\, Ferguson’s art teaching career had ended as his sight had by that time completely failed him. \nCourageously enduring the terrible long-term consequences of war\, he was nevertheless able to assist his son and son-in-law in their stained-glass window business conducted in Ferguson’s back-yard\, producing wonderful windows installed in churches across Victoria and elsewhere. \nIn 1968\, the Repatriation Department contacted him with the possibility of surgery to replace his corneas. By the miracle of science and providence\, Nelson’s eyesight was fully restored\, allowing him to once again see the beauty around him\, including the churches windows he had assisted in making. Ferguson died in 1976. \nThis story will stir your soul.\n \n\n \nAbout the presenter \nDon Farrands QC is the grandson of NH Ferguson. Don is a commercial barrister\, chartered accountant\, and company director. He has significant and varied experience in law\, commerce\, the arts\, and community organisations including in the disability sector. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 27 April 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\n\nMutineers is a true story of the heroes and villains who sparked the biggest controversy in the annals of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) when they led a mutiny on the battlecruiser\, HMAS Australia in 1919. \n \n \n\nFive young teenage boys from working class suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne joined the RAN to fight in the First World War. Fate brought them together in the bowels of the battlecruiser. The leader of this small band of sailors\, Dalmorton Rudd became a war hero after he took part in a raid on a German submarine base at Zeebrugge in Belguim in 1918. His younger brother Lenny\, and his friends admired Dalmorton Rudd and followed his lead. \nHowever\, after five years in the North Sea these sailors were home sick and tired of harsh British naval discipline. Dalmorton Rudd had also lost his first wife and their child to the Spanish Flu. He was grief stricken and angry with the world. There were signs of trouble just before HMAS Australia sailed for home in April 1919 and when the battlecruiser reached Fremantle tensions reached flashpoint. After an alcohol fuelled night in Fremantle pubs\, where the five sailors drank with disaffected dockside workers\, they came back on board demanding extra shore leave. When this was rejected by the officers they went on strike and were charged with mutiny. A naval court martial in Sydney sentenced them to two years imprisonment with hard labour in Goulburn Gaol. \nThe Labor Party seized on the ‘savage sentences’ to attack the Nationalist Government several months before the December 1919 Federal election. The Prime Minister\, Billy Hughes\, and Navy Minister Sir Joseph Cook\, came back from the Paris Peace Conference to find their Government in turmoil on the issue. To avoid a damaging election debate\, Billy Hughes and Sir Joseph Cook asked the Admiralty in London to commute the prison sentences but the Sea Lords refused. So the Australian Government went over the heads of the Admiralty to their British political masters in Whitehall. The Royal Navy officers leading the RAN were shocked and resigned over this political interference in naval discipline. It would require deft political management of this controversy to avoid a diplomatic rift with Great Britain that would leave the RAN in disarray. But it was also an opportunity to take control of Australia’s destiny as an independent Dominion within the British Empire. \nSome of the sailors fell by the wayside after they left Goulburn Gaol but the others survived the hardship of the Great Depression and conflict again during the Second World War to live long and happy lives. This is their story. \n \n\nAbout the presenter \nHome \n \nRobert Hadler is a former award-winning economics journalist and foreign correspondent who also worked in the Commonwealth public service\, as a political advisor\, for industry and lobby groups and as a senior executive in some of Australia’s biggest companies. Since 2015\, Robert has been a Non-Executive Director on Government\, private and not-for-profit Boards. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 15 February 2022 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \nAt the end of the session\, Harry will take questions on the book as well as any questions related to the SAS. \n  \n \n\nThe presentation\nAnthony ‘Harry’ Moffitt spent more than twenty years in the SAS. His decades of service and his multiple tours in East Timor\, Iraq and Afghanistan made him one of the regiment’s most experienced and recognised figures. \nAlongside the SAS\, Harry’s other lifetime love is cricket. An improvised game of cricket was often the circuit-breaker Harry and his team needed after the tension of operations. He began a tradition of organising matches wherever he was sent\, whether it was in the mountains of East Timor with a fugitive rebel leader\, or on the dusty streets of Baghdad\, or in exposed Forward Operating Bases in the hills of Afghanistan. Soldiers\, locals and even visiting politicians played in these spontaneous yet often bridge-building games. \nAs part of the tradition\, Harry also started to take a cricket bat with him on operational tours\, eleven of them in total. They’d often go outside the wire with him and end up signed by those he met or fought alongside. These eleven bats form the basis for Harry’s extraordinary memoir. It’s a book about combat\, and what it takes to serve in one of the world’s most elite formations. It’s a book about the toll that war takes on soldiers and their loved ones. And it’s a book about the healing power of cricket\, and how a game can break down borders in even the most desperate of circumstances. \n \n\nAbout the presenter\nAnthony ‘Harry’ Moffitt recently retired from the Australian Defence Force after almost thirty years\, most of which was spent with Australia’s elite Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment as a Team Commander and Team Specialist. He has served in eleven active deployments\, including being wounded in action in 2008. Harry completed his time with the SAS as its Human Performance Manager. He’s a Registered Psychologist and runs a human performance consultancy\, Stotan Group\, working with sports teams\, the military and industry. DESCRIPTION:A joint presentation with the Genealogical Society of Victoria and the RHSV. \nWe are delighted that Dr Charles Fahey has agreed to deliver this seminar on Soldier Settlement Schemes. \n \nThe Soldier Settlement Schemes encompassed thousands of World War One returned soldiers who occupied farming land on conditional purchase leases across Victoria between 1919 and the 1960s. If you are researching family or Australian history this talk will help you understand the individual experience of a soldier settler\, as well as the historical context of the Victorian Soldier Settlement Scheme. The talk will make special use of files from the parishes of Wagant and Kulwin to illustrate the information and stories to be found in vast archive left by the settlers. \nDr Charles Fahey joined Latrobe University in 1990 after briefly teaching history at the University of Tasmania in Launceston. He taught history at La Trobe University\, in Bendigo\, Melbourne and Shepparton until his retirement in 2018. His research explores Australian Labor\, rural and mining history. He is the author of many Victorian rural histories and articles (a list of articles can be found here). Before becoming an academic\, he was employed as a historian with the Victorian Government\, where he worked on the conservation of historic sites on Crown land and the history of Victorian forestry. The unit Charles worked with was also responsible for transferring the vast archive of Solder Settler files to PROV. \nThis is a free Zoom presentation. SUMMARY:‘Leadership in Crisis: Blamey at War.’ - Speaker: Brent Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 10 November 2021 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n\nThe presentation\nGeneral Blamey is a controversial figure in Australian military history. This presentation describes a consummate military leader at the top of his game fighting for his country in a time of deep crisis.\n‘Never trust foreign generals with the Diggers’ was Blamey’s cast iron rule\, which he learnt the hard way on the killing fields of World War I. As Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces in World War II\, by applying this rule and through great leadership\, he built up a winning world-class military system. He kept control of his forces and demanded his generals always ‘keep the casualties low’. As a result\, the Diggers had remarkably low casualty rates while achieving spectacular results. \nBlamey was a hard man doing a very hard job very well for a long time. He was both spectacularly effective (consistently won\, managed complex and difficult political relationships\, managed a vast\, dispersed organisation in a time of crisis and stayed in command for the whole war) and efficient (kept the casualties low). \nAll leaders make enemies and mistakes. Blamey was no different. His reputation has been unfairly blackened by the small number of mistakes he made\, while the huge amount of good he did tends to be unknown or unrecognised\, including by the Diggers whose lives he saved. \nBrent’s analysis shows Australian forces in WWII suffered 45\,000 fewer deaths than one would expect. This was largely Blamey’s work since he sat at the apex of the command pyramid. The presentation explains how he achieved that great feat while leading a force of comprising around million men. The other major achievement was that his force won most of the time. \nFurther he kept his job right through the war\, which is an achievement not shared by the governments that employed him. \n \n\nAbout the presenter\nIn addition to writing two biographical leadership books Brent has had over twenty-five years professional experience in understanding and describing leadership to senior management. Included in that experience was four years as research director for KPMG during which time he applied many analyses similar to those applied to Blamey’s record.\nBrent has a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology Hons).

DESCRIPTION:In light of the recent AUKUS pact between Australia\, the United Kingdom and the United States\, Professor John Blaxland from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU will explore the unreconciled dialectic in Australian consciousness between our geography\, history and a lingering fear of entrapment. \n \nProfessor Blaxland’s talk will probe such issues as: \n– As a multicultural nation\, how important is the Anglosphere to Australia’s identity\, its sense of history and its hopes for the future? \n– How fearful should Australians be of being left to face the fears of our geography without a great and powerful friend by our side? \n– To what extent do Australia’s interests overlap with its neighbours and how much hope can they place in regional partnerships? \n– How much can AUKUS do for Australia in enlisting British and American help? Courtesy of Museums Victoria website.\nIn this seminar\, Patrick Ferry and other staff from the National Archives’ Victoria State Office will examine the range of resources available to help you discover more about the military service and sacrifice made by members of your family or local community. Key series in the National Archives’ collection will be highlighted\, including WW1 and WW2 service dossiers and Repatriation / Veterans’ Affairs case files\, together with records about civilians during wartime. The seminar will also point you to other valuable sources of information including Unit War Diaries (held by the Australian War Memorial) and Soldier Settlement records (held by PROV). Research methodologies will also be discussed. \nThis seminar will be of great interest to family historians\, local historians\, military history buffs and people with a general interest in learning more about Australia’s priceless military service records. \nPatrick Ferry is State Manager\, Victoria for the National Archives of Australia. SUMMARY:No regard for the truth: friendship and kindness. Tragedy and injustice. Rowville’s Italian prisoners of war.
DESCRIPTION:In March 1946\, the war was over. The Italian prisoners of war who had been captured several years earlier in northern Africa were interned in camps around Australia and were waiting to be returned home. One Saturday evening\, the commandant of the Rowville internment camp\, Captain Waterston\, shot and killed a prisoner\, Rodolfo Bartoli\, who he claimed was attempting to escape. What initially appeared to be a straightforward case of an Australian army officer carrying out his duty\, soon appeared to be something else. Allegations of assaults\, reckless firing of weapons\, drunkenness and stolen goods began to emerge. \nWe are delighted that Darren Arnott\, a Melbourne based IT Security consultant will share\, with RHSV members\, his experiences about discovering this story and the details of his research into ‘No Regard for the Truth’ where he delved into military and court archives\, historical police reports\, newspaper articles and personal accounts from former locals who still had memories of the Italians and the camp. He learnt of the brutal treatment of some of the internees and of a romance between the young shooting victim and the daughter of a local farmer which took surprising twist during his research. \nNo Regard for the Truth was shortlisted for the Victorian Community History Awards 2020 and in available in the RHSV bookshop.

SUMMARY:The Elements of military Hygiene: Australian Pacific Forces\, 1945
DESCRIPTION:Military hygiene is an essential component of any war effort. In the severe tropical climate of the Second World War’s Pacific theatre\, disease disabled and killed more Australian troops than the enemy did.\nDr Cecil Evelyn Aufrere Cook (1897-1985) CBE\, MD\, DTMH\, DPH\, RACGP\, ACMA joined the Commonwealth’s Military Reserve as an honorary captain in 1932. He was Medical Officer for the Darwin Garrison until 1938\, when he was appointed Garrison Commander. In 1939 he joined the School of Military Hygiene as a lecturer and until 1941 was a Medical Officer in 4 Armoured Regiment. Cook enlisted for war service in 1941 and was demobilised in February 1946\, with the rank of Lt-Col AD-H (HQ). \nMilitary Hygiene applies at three levels – personal\, camp and region. Dr Cook addressed all three levels and made special studies of regional hygiene profiles before occupation (Morotai Island)\, before battle (OBOE 1 Tarakan and OBOE 2 Borneo) and after victory (Japan). This talk examines Cook’s studies of Japan to prepare the Commonwealth Occupation Force for their engagement in that country. \nWith assistance of some images the talk will describe the scope and content of his hygiene training regime and reports on hygiene risks in Japan\, as well as background information. A brief written paper for participants provides details of Cook’s military and civilian roles and awards in his career of over 50 years. A more detailed written paper will be available after the talk. \nBARRY LEITHHEAD is a retired management consultant specialising in corporate governance\, an author\, presenter and historian. He is the author of A Vision for Australia’s Health: Dr Cecil Cook At Work (Australian Scholarly Publishing\, 2019). Using letters\, diaries and memoirs from the veterans of the Ramu Valley campaign\, including from the Japanese side\, Phillip takes the reader onto the battlefield. \nFrom the killing ground of Kaiapit to the treacherous heights of the Finisterre Range\, for four months in 1943-44 the Australian army fought to drive the Japanese from their mountain strongholds. DESCRIPTION:This webinar explores the psychological\, emotional\, and moral dimensions of aggression\, violence\, and coercive behaviour in the post-war lives of former Australian airmen prisoners of war (POWs).  \n \nIt indicates that\, in some cases\, physical and emotional abuse were expressions of captivity trauma. Former POWs rarely articulated narratives of perpetration. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8 September 2021 @ 7:00pm to 8:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n\n  \nThe presentation\nMarch 1945. A handful of young Allied operatives are parachuted into the remote jungled heart of the Japanese-occupied island of Borneo\, east of Singapore\, there to recruit the island’s indigenous Dayak peoples to fight the Japanese. Yet most have barely encountered Asian or indigenous people before\, speak next to no Borneo languages\, and know little about Dayaks\, other than that they have been – and may still be – headhunters. They fear that on arrival the Dayaks will kill them or hand them over to the Japanese. For their part\, some Dayaks have never before seen a white face. \nSo begins the story of Operation Semut\, an Australian secret operation launched by the organisation codenamed Services Reconnaisance Department – popularly known as Z Special Unit – in the final months of WWII. Anthropologist Christine Helliwell has called on her years of first-hand knowledge of Borneo\, interviewed more than one hundred Dayak people and all the remaining Semut operatives\, and consulted thousands of military and other documents to piece together this astonishing story. Focusing on the operation’s activities along two of Borneo’s great rivers – the Baram and Rejang – the book provides a detailed military history of Semut II’s and Semut III’s brutal guerrilla campaign against the Japanese\, and reveals the decisive but long-overlooked Dayak role in the operation. \nBut this is no ordinary history. Helliwell captures vividly the sounds\, smells and tastes of the jungles into which the operatives are plunged\, an environment so terrifying that many are unsure whether jungle or Japanese is the greater enemy. And she takes us into the lives and cavernous longhouses of the Dayaks on whom their survival depends. The result is a truly unique account of the encounter between two very different cultures amidst the savagery of the Pacific War. \n \n\n  \nAbout the presenter\nChristine Helliwell is an anthropologist and author\, currently Emeritus Professor at the Australian National University in Canberra. She has been carrying out research on Borneo’s indigenous Dayak peoples for almost forty years and has published widely on Dayak social and cultural life. \nSince 2014 she has been researching WWII in Borneo and has travelled extensively throughout Sarawak\, in the north of the island\, interviewing elderly people who still remember the war. SUMMARY:‘Special Missions in Persia and Russia\, 1917-1919: Colonel Earnest Latchford MC MBE’ - Speaker: Mark Latchford
DESCRIPTION:In late 1918\, thousands of Australian soldiers\, exhausted and scarred from the conflict in Europe\, began to head home to loved ones down under. However\, one ANZAC headed the wrong way\, toward more conflict and risk in vast and frozen Siberia. This is the story of Ernest Latchford\, told through his articulate\, observant letters home from three very distinct theatres of war. \n \n\n \nErn Latchford was one of the early recruits to newly federated Australia’s embryonic militia and when war did break out in 1914\, he was very reluctantly held back to train the battalions that were soon to land in Gallipoli. He finally reached the Western Front in 1916\, and served with distinction through the bloody battles of Messines and then Passchendaele\, where he was to earn a Military Cross\, during that latter futile disaster. In early 1918\, he (among a handful of other Australians) was personally selected by General John Monash to serve in the “Hush-Hush” Dunsterville campaign in Persia. His particular responsibility was to train Armenian refugees against the Ottoman Army (and to protect the oil wealth of the Persian Gulf). At the end of the war\, instead of returning to Australia\, he became the only Australian to be deployed in central Siberia to train White Russian forces against the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War. \nEvery week\, irrespective of location\, intensity of battle or injury he wrote to his fiancé\, Linda Dehnert in Western Victoria. These previously unseen letters\, often many pages in length\, were always passionate and vivid as he describes the politics of the conflict and the horrors of the battles\, especially the loss of much- loved colleagues. He eloquently described the cities and towns he passed through and the variety of nationalities he came across\, including French farmers and villages; the Arab\, Armenians and Persians of the Middle East and finally the Russians\, caught in a bloody conflict that would have ramifications for decades. In between\, he wrote romantically of his courtship of Linda and the joy of life at home on the family farm named Lily Vale in Western Victoria. \n \n\nAbout the presenter \nMark Latchford was born in Canberra and is a graduate of the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Modern History\, Political Science\, Economic Geography). He had a successful corporate career with the IBM Corporation\, including senior executive roles in Australia\, Japan\, France and Hong Kong. Post retirement\, he consults in the public and private sector while pursuing his passion for history\, biography and adventure travel.
