SUMMARY:Women Work for Victory in World War II - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Women Work for Victory in World War II tells the story of women on the home front during the Second World War. \n \nIt is an online exhibition for now\, while the Old Treasury Building is closed for the COVID 19 pandemic. But the exhibition is in place in the galleries and will be available just as soon as we can open once again. \nWomen Work for Victory is an important reminder of the contribution played by women across Australian society in the cause of an Allied victory. Many thousands of women joined the workforce during world War II\, many working in jobs previously reserved for men. From the fields to the factories\, the armed services to the home\, women produced the food\, clothing and munitions that supplied both the Allied troops in the Pacific region and the civilian population. \nMany of these jobs were difficult and dangerous\, but thousands of women responded to the call. It is important to remember their stories. \nWhile the critical work of women on the home front during World War II went a long way towards shifting attitudes towards women in the workforce\, the exhibition also lays clear the limitations to such changes. \nWomen Work for Victory reveals that most women at this time were paid far less than men\, even where the work they performed was identical. Equal pay was a live issue at the time\, but very few women ever achieved it. As the men returned from the war\, women had to relinquish many of these jobs. It was ‘thanks girls and goodbye!’

DESCRIPTION:Royal United Services Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address. \n \n \nGreg Barton is Professor of Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute. \nGreg has been active for the past thirty years in inter-faith dialogue initiatives and has a deep commitment to building understanding of Islam and Muslim society. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought\, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. He has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society\, especially of the role of Islam. Since 2004 he has made a comparative study of progressive Islamic thought in Turkey and Indonesia. \nHe also has a general interest in security studies and human security and a particular interest in countering violent extremism continues to research Islamic and Islamist movements in Southeast Asia and around the world. \nCoffee and Tea from 12.00 pm. SUMMARY:‘Secret & Special – Z Special Unit in WWII’  Speaker: Will Davies
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Webinar: Wednesday 31 March 2021 @ 7:00pm to 8:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n  \n \n\nSecret and Special covers the untold story of Z Special Unit and Operations\, the precursor to the elite SAS\, and the extraordinary feats they undertook in the Pacific during the Second World War. \nThe Z Special Unit was established as a secret military reconnaissance unit after the declaration of war on Japan. The unit was tasked with the role to “obtain and report information of the enemy … weaken the enemy by sabotage and destruction of morale and to lend aid and assistance to local efforts to the same end in enemy occupied territories.” In 1943 they arrived in Melbourne adding Australians to their troops\, training in a number of places around the country. \nDuring the course of the war\, Z Special Unit carried out 81 covert operations in the Southwest Pacific. While the unit was disbanded after the end of the war\, many of its techniques would be modified and used by Australian Special Forces to this day. \nWith access to not-previously-shared interviews with each of the soldiers who returned from these Z Special missions\, Davies sheds a bright light on what is an incredibly under-told part of Australian activity during the Second World War. \n \n\n  \n \nAbout the presenter \nWill Davies spent 37 years working as an independent producer of mainly historical documentaries and series for the ABC and SBS. He retired in 2010. \nHe began writing books with the first published in 2012 and to date has had ten books published. Somme Mud: The war experiences of an Australian infantryman in France 1916-1919\, which he edited\, has become a bestseller in Australia\, the UK and The Netherlands. \nIn The Footsteps of Private Lynch has also been published to acclaim in Australia and the UK. \nBeneath Hill 60 tells the true story of the Australian miners and soldiers who tunnelled under Hill 60 near Ypres and eventually broke through to create a new frontline. \nHe was a member of the NSW Anzac Council\, leads battlefield tours to the Western Front and has served on a number of boards. \nIn 2018 he was awarded a Ph.D from the ANU and among other projects\, is working to build a war memorial school in the French village of Pozieres. \n \n\n  \nSecret and Special\nAvailable 2 March 2021

SUMMARY:Vera Deakin in War and Peace With Carole Woods
DESCRIPTION:The RHSV’s major lecture during Women’s History Month (March). The lecture will start at 6pm and we will be serving drinks prior to that from 5:30pm. \nThe daughter of Prime Minister Alfred Deakin\, Vera Deakin studied music in the Habsburg Empire on the eve of the Great War. Driven by British imperial fervour on her return to Australia\, she bypassed the government’s restrictions on women’s participation in the war effort by serving with the fledgling Australian Red Cross. Aged only 23 in 1915\, she became the founding secretary of the Australian Red Cross Wounded & Missing Enquiry Bureau in Cairo and later London. Narrowly avoiding replacement by a man\, she showed outstanding leadership and was appointed OBE. In peace she married an adventurous military pilot\, Captain Thomas White\, later a cabinet minister. When he was knighted\, she became Lady White. Vera led several humanitarian causes but her lodestar remained the Red Cross. \n \nCarole Woods OAM is a Fellow and honorary secretary of the RHSV. A former librarian\, bibliographer and freelance historian\, she has been a longtime advocate for community history. She chaired the judges’ panel of the Victorian Community History Awards for seven years and curated two exhibitions at the RHSV.  Her books include Beechworth. DESCRIPTION:Every year the RHSV hosts a fabulous second-hand history book fair where we sell history books of every imaginable genre. \n \nVictorian and Australian history dominate but you’ll find biographies and memoirs\, military history\, art history\, natural history\, classics\, children’s books\, political and social history\, literary history etc \nThere wasn’t a book fair in 2020 so the Drill Hall is bursting at the seams with accumulated donations of books from members and friends: professional and professorial libraries being downsized\, private\, public and educational libraries deaccessioning and old books making way for new. Books are priced to go – we don’t want any books left behind! A COVID silver-lining has to be that everyone Marie-Kondo’ed their libraries in 2020 and we’ve benefited. \nAt the 2021 Book Fair we are honoured to offer the Les Blake Collection for sale. Leslie Bamford James Blake\, O.B.E.\, B.A. Melb.\, M.Ed. Melb.\, F.A.C.E.\, F.R.S.H.V.\, F.I.B.A. was born at Bendigo (Vic.) on 5 March 1913 and died 4 June 1987 at Karingal. A long-time member of the Victorian Education Department\, during which he was an Inspector of Schools (1958-1972)\, and official historian of the Department (1966-1974)\, after which he became Victoria’s State Historian. He made major contributions to the Australian Dictionary of Biography and served in the Australian Army Signal Corps of the A.I.F. during WWII. He was President of the R.H.S.V. from 1966-1971 and Foundation President of the Western Victorian Association of historical Societies (1963-1964). \nThe Book Fair is open to the public however it kicks off with a Members-only night on Thursday 18th Feb from 5pm – 8pm. The fair then remains open to the public on Friday 19th\, Saturday 20th and Monday 22nd February (9am – 5pm except Saturday which is 10am – 4pm).

SUMMARY:‘The Dunera Boys – a Family Story’ - Speaker: Phil Dressing
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Webinar: Wednesday 17 February 2021 @ 7:00pm to 8:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \nDuring this presentation Phil Dressing will tell a very personal family story of the “Dunera Boys”. \nHis father and his two brothers were brought up in a German orientated orphanage in London. They were interned in the UK in the mid-forties by the Government fearing a fifth front on home shores. Informed they were being banished to Canada and they were put aboard the Aranadora Star\, a converted Blue Star Passenger Liner. \nThe ship\, unescorted\, was torpedoed and sunk by U47 with tremendous loss of life. The vessel was carrying far more passengers than life saving capacity. All three brothers survived and a very short time later found themselves on the HMT Dunera bound for Australia. \n2\,542 internees left Liverpool on the ‘hell’ ship bound for Australia. The Dunera was dangerously overcrowded and the internees were kept in quarters below deck\, with limited access to fresh air or daylight. Conditions were unhygienic\, with the putrid stench of vomit\, urine and unwashed bodies. The internees suffered from poor rations\, inadequate medical care and regular beatings from the British guards. Despite the hardships on board and in Australia\, 900 elected to stay in the country. \nUpon arrival\, they were interned at Tatura\, Victoria. Towards the end of the war with Germany\, the boys were offered to be returned to the UK or join the Australian Army. They chose the latter and served in the northern islands fighting the Japanese. \nAll three survived that experience\, returned to Victoria\, married\, raised families and went on to become successful businessmen. The Dressing brothers did not tell their siblings their life story. In Phil’s father’s case\, not until his wife\, Jean\, passed away some thirty years ago. When he was asked why he kept the story to himself\, his father replied that he was afraid his sons would think less of him being of German origin during the war. \nThis is their story. \n \n\n\n \nAbout the presenter \nPhil Dressing is General Manager of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum\, a position he has held since November 2016. Not a Vietnam Vet himself\, he was in the last National Service ballot in September 1972 at the age of nineteen years. His date was not drawn but Gough Whitlam\, elected to lead our Country in December 1972\, on a platform of anti-war\, anti-conscription\, immediately dismantled National Service. It was unlikely Phil would have served even had his number been drawn. He was provided a temporary exemption at the time. \nHe was born and bred in West St. Kilda\, which explains his love of the St. Kilda Football Club\, and was schooled at Middle Park State School and Caulfield Grammar. His early career was Industrial Risk Management/Occupational Health and Safety\, becoming Pilkington (industrial\, domestic and automotive glass manufacturers) Australasia’s Risk and Insurance Manager. After a move to Phillip Island he managed the local golf club for eight years\, worked in real estate for two years and then worked for the Phillip Island Adventure Resort for ten years. He has been married to Jan for over forty years. They have two sons and four grandchildren. Despite his ample girth he plays golf and pedals around Phillip Island on a regular basis. \nBook your ticket here

DESCRIPTION:Women Work for Victory in World War II tells the story of women on the home front during the Second World War. \n \nIt is an online exhibition for now\, while the Old Treasury Building is closed for the COVID 19 pandemic. But the exhibition is in place in the galleries and will be available just as soon as we can open once again. \nWomen Work for Victory is an important reminder of the contribution played by women across Australian society in the cause of an Allied victory. Many thousands of women joined the workforce during world War II\, many working in jobs previously reserved for men. From the fields to the factories\, the armed services to the home\, women produced the food\, clothing and munitions that supplied both the Allied troops in the Pacific region and the civilian population. \nMany of these jobs were difficult and dangerous\, but thousands of women responded to the call. It is important to remember their stories. \nWhile the critical work of women on the home front during World War II went a long way towards shifting attitudes towards women in the workforce\, the exhibition also lays clear the limitations to such changes. \nWomen Work for Victory reveals that most women at this time were paid far less than men\, even where the work they performed was identical. Equal pay was a live issue at the time\, but very few women ever achieved it. As the men returned from the war\, women had to relinquish many of these jobs. It was ‘thanks girls and goodbye!’

DESCRIPTION:In this Museum At Home webinar 30 years on from the Gulf War\, we explore Australia’s contribution and involvement in Operation Desert Storm. \n\nAbout this Event\n17 January 2021 marks 30 years since the start of Operation Desert Storm\, the military response by a US-led coalition of 35 nations against Iraq’s illegal occupation of neighbouring Kuwait in August 1990. More than 1\,800 Australian Defence Force personnel were deployed to the Persian Gulf from August 1990 to September 1991. On 24 February 1991\, coalition ground forces moved from Saudi Arabia against Iraqi positions\, destroying what was left of Iraq’s ability to resist. Although Australian forces never officially engaged in open combat with hostile forces they primarily provided naval support with a unit of photo interpreters on the ground in Saudi Arabia. \nIn this webinar\, historian Dr Aaron Pegram explains Australia’s involvement in the Gulf War and how the Australian War Memorial is collecting stories and items to display in its museum gallery spaces in the future. \nThis is an interactive webinar\, where viewers have the opportunity to send in questions online during the event for our speakers to answer. \nPanelist: \nDr Aaron Pegram is a senior historian at the Australian War Memorial with 15 years’ experience in museums and exhibition development. DESCRIPTION:Zoom Webinar: Tuesday October 20\, 2020 @ 7.00 pm to 8:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \nPurchase your tickets here\nA dark secret lurked aboard HMAS Australia\, the flagship of the Royal Australian Navy. \nThis would prove to be one of the most controversial events in the history of the Royal Australian Navy and trigger unprecedented legal and political events. \nIn 1942\, with a Japanese invasion on New Guinea looming\, those aboard the ship were shocked and completely unprepared to deal with the brutal murder of a young sailor by two shipmates who were allegedly part of a homosexual group on the flagship. \nA swift military investigation and court martial were conducted. The officers faced a difficult\, almost impossible task. How were they to prove the guilt of sailors accused of murdering a shipmate without exposing the motive for the crime\, which would unleash embarrassing propaganda onto the world for the enemy to exploit? \nThe RAN was placed under the operational control of the Royal Navy in 1939. This meant that Australian sailors\, in Australian warships\, even in home waters\, were subject to British naval law during the war. This would have profound implications for the sailors who murdered Jack Riley. The death penalty only applied for treason under Australian military law. The death sentence applied for murder under British law. \nThe incident was a massive shock to the new Labor Government. It owned the RAN but it had no control over it. Even worse\, the Labor Government was opposed to capital punishment but it could not overturn a death sentence without the agreement of the British Government. Unfortunately\, Whitehall and the Admiralty were not keen to make an exception that may undermine naval discipline across the fleet. This led to a diplomatic standoff that would take Royal intervention to resolve. \nThe Labor Government was so angry about the situation that its Attorney General\, Bert Evatt\, decided to use the Australia incident to adopt the Statute of Westminster so Parliament could over-ride British law. However\, the Conservative parties controlled the Senate and opposed adoption of the Statute during the war. It would be a bold gamble by Evatt that would make or break his political career. \nThe full details of the murder\, the names of the sailors involved in an alleged homosexual group on the flagship and the dark motive for his murder have been buried for more than two generations in the National Archives. The ultimate fate of the sailors convicted of his murder has also been hidden for far too long. SUMMARY:Ross McMullin - ‘Turning Disaster into Victory: The Battle of Polygon Wood’ live online
DESCRIPTION:The battle of Polygon Wood in September 1917 is one of the AIF’s most iconic but least understood victories.  \n  \n \nIt has usually been depicted as a relatively straightforward affair — the Australians advanced behind an irresistible barrage that resembled a Gippsland bushfire\, and there were inevitable casualties but no major hiccups. This interpretation is fundamentally flawed. \nThere was indeed a major hiccup that complicated the operation. The Germans\, sensing what was coming\, launched a ferocious pre-emptive attack against the AIF’s right. The 58th Battalion\, then holding the front line\, held firm despite severe casualties\, while the British unit alongside was driven back. AIF units earmarked for the following day’s operation were sent forward to retrieve the situation\, and further heavy losses resulted. \nWith enemy forces occupying the adjacent British sector\, General Pompey Elliott recommended that the operation be postponed. His superiors insisted that the attack had to proceed. Elliott had to overhaul the arrangements in great haste. He remained sceptical about assurances he was given that the plight on the right would be fixed before zero hour. It wasn’t. Even so\, men under his command attained the Australian objectives in their sector and ensured that the British objectives on their right were attained as well. \nWhen the real story is understood\, the extent of the AIF achievement at Polygon Wood can be properly appreciated. His latest book is Pompey Elliott at War: In His Own Words. His biography of Australia’s first official war artist\, Will Dyson: Australia’s Radical Genius\, was highly commended by the judges of the National Biography Award. Other previous books include the ALP centenary history The Light on the Hill: The Australian Labor Party 1891-1991\, and another political history So Monstrous a Travesty: Chris Watson and The World’s First National Labour Government.

DESCRIPTION:An invitation to the launch of Mike Rosel’s A Rat of Tobruk by Dr Mark Johnston . \n \nTo mark the 80th anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk in 2021\, Melbourne writer Mike Rosel has chosen many photographs from his father’s WWII albums\, notably those from Tobruk – many not seen before. \nThe tale of Lt John Rosel MC\, and the 2/24th Battalion‘s odyssey from training in northeast Victoria to Tobruk\, is complemented by never-before-published intimate and frank letters from Tobruk by Private Harry Frazer to his parents in Swan Hill. \nLieutenant John Rosel won a Military Cross for displaying ‘calmness and outstanding leadership’ when his platoon became surrounded at a critical point in the siege of Tobruk. He led the defence of several vital outposts against numerous attacks by the troops of General Rommel. DESCRIPTION:Major General Andrew Bottrell – Head Land Systems – TOPIC :- Equipping the Army. \n\nMajor General Bottrell’s operational service includes tours to the Antarctic (1989/90& 1990/91)\, East Timor (1999 and 2006)\, Iraq (2007) and Afghanistan (2013). Following his deployment to Afghanistan he assumed command of 17 Combat Service Support Brigade\, which he held until early 2015 when he was promoted to Major General and appointed as Commander of the Joint Agency Task Force for Operation Sovereign Borders; Australia’s whole of Government counter-people smuggling operation. \nMajor General Bottrell holds graduate and post graduate qualifications from RMIT\, Deakin University\, Canberra University\, and most recently was a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in 2003 for his work at Strategic Operations Division and a Bar to the Conspicuous Service Cross in the 2007 for his role as the Logistics Component Commander on Operation ASTUTE. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his role in coordinating the redeployment of Australian forces from Afghanistan in 2013. \nIn December 2018\, Major General Bottrell assumed the role of Head Land Systems Division\, within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group. \nCoffee and Tea from 12.00 pm.\, sandwiches after.
