DESCRIPTION:An invitation to the launch of Mike Rosel’s A Rat of Tobruk by Dr Mark Johnston . \n \nTo mark the 80th anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk in 2021\, Melbourne writer Mike Rosel has chosen many photographs from his father’s WWII albums\, notably those from Tobruk – many not seen before. \nThe tale of Lt John Rosel MC\, and the 2/24th Battalion‘s odyssey from training in northeast Victoria to Tobruk\, is complemented by never-before-published intimate and frank letters from Tobruk by Private Harry Frazer to his parents in Swan Hill. \nLieutenant John Rosel won a Military Cross for displaying ‘calmness and outstanding leadership’ when his platoon became surrounded at a critical point in the siege of Tobruk. He led the defence of several vital outposts against numerous attacks by the troops of General Rommel. Following his deployment to Afghanistan he assumed command of 17 Combat Service Support Brigade\, which he held until early 2015 when he was promoted to Major General and appointed as Commander of the Joint Agency Task Force for Operation Sovereign Borders; Australia’s whole of Government counter-people smuggling operation. \nMajor General Bottrell holds graduate and post graduate qualifications from RMIT\, Deakin University\, Canberra University\, and most recently was a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in 2003 for his work at Strategic Operations Division and a Bar to the Conspicuous Service Cross in the 2007 for his role as the Logistics Component Commander on Operation ASTUTE. Ahead of International Women’s Day\, hear a tri-service panel of women candidly discuss their experiences of the modern military.\nDate: Thursday 5 March\, 6pm\nLocation: Education Centre\, Shrine of Remembrance\nCost: $5\, free for Shrine Friends \nSpeakers:\nLieutenant Commander Helen Ward RAN – Helen signed up to the Royal Australian Navy in 1987\, a few years after women were first integrated into the RAN\, and was first posted as an instructor to the Weapons Electrical Engineering School at HMAS Cerberus. In her more than thirty-year career in the RAN and the Australian Naval Reserves\, Helen has served on many Australian naval ships and undertaken active service deployments on Operation Catalyst (Baghdad 2007–08)\, Bushfire Assist Vic (2009)\, Indo Pacific Endeavour (2017) and Joint Task Force 646 Op Bushfire Assist 2019–20. \nBruna Norrish – Bruna enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in 1988. During her 17-year career in the Army\, Bruna undertook postings around Australia and was deployed twice to East Timor. Bruna’s first deployment was in 1999 as part of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) and again in 2003 as part of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). Bruna currently works for the Australian Public Service in the Department of Defence as Operations Manager\, Armoured Vehicle Division\, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). \nFlight Lieutenant Kelli Mitchener – Kelli began her nursing career as a civilian in Melbourne hospitals and joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2006 as a specialist reserves intensive care nurse. In 2008\, Kelli deployed to Afghanistan as a member of AUSMTF2\, a 10-person critical care\, and surgical team embedded in the Dutch Army role 2 facility in Tarin Kowt. During this three-month deployment Kelli cared for NATO soldiers and local Afghani civilians. Kelli is currently Executive Director of Clinical Governance and Medical Operations at Central Gippsland Health in Sale\, Victoria.

The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought\, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. He has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society\, especially of the role of Islam. DESCRIPTION:Michael Veitch\, actor\, presenter and critically acclaimed author\, brings to life the incredible exploits and tragic sacrifices of the Australian heroes in the epic story of the Milne Bay campaign of 1942 – which saw Japanese land forces suffer their first defeat of the war – and has properly been called the RAAF’s forgotten finest hour. \nNOTE THE CHANGES TO DATE AND VENUE.\n\nSeptember 1942 marked the high-point of Axis conquest in World War II. In the Pacific\, Japan’s soldiers had seemed unstoppable. However\, the tide was about to turn. On Sunday\, 6 September 1942\, Japanese land forces suffered their first conclusive defeat at the hands of the Allies. At Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea\, a predominantly Australian force – including 75 Squadron (fresh from their action in 44 Days) – fought for two weeks to successfully defend a vital airstrip against a determined Japanese invasion. The victorious Australian army units were crucially supported by two locally-based squadrons of RAAF Kittyhawks. The Battle for Milne Bay and victory for the Allies was a significant turning point in the Pacific War\, but while it received worldwide publicity at the time\, it has since been largely forgotten… It deserves to be remembered. \nAbout the presenter \nMichael is well known as an author\, actor\, comedian and former ABC television and radio presenter. SUMMARY:Heavy and Continuous Sacrifice’: New Zealand\, its Allies and the Second World War - Conference
DESCRIPTION:The war on which we are entering may be a long one\, demanding from us heavy and continuous sacrifice.” – Prime Minister Michael Savage\, 6 September 1939.\nSince 1995\, the New Zealand Military History Committee has convened five highly successful conferences on aspects of New Zealand’s military experience. In February 2020\, at Massey\nUniversity in Wellington\, it will return to the subject of the first of these conferences — the Second World War. This will be a timely reconsideration following the recent 80th anniversary of the beginning of that conflict in Europe with Germany’s invasion of Poland and New Zealand’s declaration of war on Germany. \nThe conference will address what was the greatest national effort in New Zealand’s history\, both at home and abroad\, affecting every person in the country. The focus of the conference will be\nwide-ranging. There will be a number of papers on military operations involving New Zealand or Allied forces\, in both the European/Mediterranean and Pacific theatres. The impact of the war at home\, both in the short-term and its legacy\, will also be addressed. \nAs in the previous conferences\, the committee has sought not only to encourage local historians and experts but also to bring to New Zealand a range of international historians\nto help put New Zealand’s experience in the wider context of the war. \nThe keynote speaker in 2020 will be Dr Jonathan Fennell from King’s College\, London\, an expert on the Commonwealth armies in the Second World War. \nOther overseas participants include Dr Claire Cookson-Hills (Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Canada)\, Dr Robert Engen (Canadian Defence College)\, Dr Mark Johnston (Scotch College\, Melbourne) and Dr Aaron Pegram (Australian War Memorial). About 30 other papers will examine a wide range of topics. \nThere will be chaired sessions on:-\n∞ pre-war policies and developments\n∞ 2nd NZEF’s discipline and experience\n∞ NZ’s foreign relations during the war\n∞ the campaigns in Greece and Crete\n∞ the North African campaign\n∞ the air and naval wars\n∞ the home front\n∞ the impact of war on veterans and families\n∞ loss and bereavement in war. \nThe conference will get underway at 2.30pm on Thursday afternoon\, 13 February. It will be followed by a formal evening event when noted Maori historian and Vietnam veteran Sir Wira Gardiner will give a keynote address. This team is charged with planning and documenting the build strategy\, processes\, training and equipment required to execute the program. \nPrior to joining the Hunter program\, Richard held a variety of positions in BAE Systems Australia in Engineering\, Manufacturing and Quality. Several years as Head of Quality was preceded by working in the Williamstown Shipyard as the Production Engineering Manager during the AWD Block and LHD construction programs. \nBefore moving into Manufacturing Operations\, Richard was an engineering design technical authority on the Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) program and ANZAC class sustainment support contract. \nRichard worked for many years in automotive design and R&D for Toyota (in Japan and Australia) and for Jaguar Cars (in the United Kingdom and the United States)\, prior to joining the naval shipbuilding industry. \nRichard holds a Masters degree in Software Development from Coventry University and a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Trinity College\, Dublin. \nCoffee and Tea from 12.00 pm.\, sandwiches after. As it evolved\, the conference has attracted world class speakers from Australia and around the world to deliver the latest research on themes with relevance to either the history of\, or operational issues affecting\, the Australian Army. \nSPEAKERS AND THEME\nThis year’s conference theme is entitled ‘An Army of Influence: The Australian Army’s Connection with the Region. Speakers include:\nProfessor John Blaxland\, ANU\nColonel (Dr) John Connery\, Australian Army\nProfessor Peter Dean\, UWA\nProfessor David Horner\, ANU\nLieutenant Colonel (Dr) Dayton McCarthy\, Australian Army\nDr Tristan Moss\, UNSW (Canberra)\nColonel Graeme Sligo\, Australian Army\nProfessor Craig Stockings\, AWM\nSpeakers from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force and the Army of the Republic of Indonesia (TNI) to be confirmed. \nThe CA History Conference provides the opportunity for current serving personnel\, invited guests and the general public to hear world recognised experts in their fields speak on a range of historical issues and examples relevant to Army’s service. Where possible\, papers offer direct parallels with events the Australian Army has experienced\, or seek to provide an historical baseline for Army’s future planning by its next generation of leaders. The conference also provides Army with a foundation for understanding the military art as practiced by different nations through a number of conflicts. \nThe papers presented at each conference have reinforced that some problems are perennial\, and that it is better to arm oneself against repeating these mistakes by learning the lessons from the past. Army views this conference as an opportunity to use history to better educate and prepare its people for the challenges they may face in the future\, as well as to provide guiding principles from which to approach planning for future operational\, administrative or modernisation requirements. \nTICKETS\nDefence Personnel\, Defence APS and Invited Guests: The Australian Army History Unit invites Army members\, members of the ADF\, Defence APS and invited guests to take advantage of Defence-funded tickets to attend this year’s conference. Defence ID will be required at the conference to collect tickets.\nGeneral Public: Members of the general public are invited to purchase tickets from Eventbrite to attend the annual CA History Conference alongside serving personnel to both learn about aspects of the Australian Army’s history\, and hear about issues faced by armies the world over (albeit in an historical context). It is also extremely instructive in educating the public about how Government\, the Army and the community negotiate ambiguous and complex military outcomes\, both internally and externally. Public engagement with the conference aids in understanding and appreciating the issues facing Army\, as well as being an opportunity for all attendees to listen to the best scholars in the world present the findings of their latest research.
