SUMMARY:The Timeline Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Timeline Festival is an annual re-enactment event that is held at Kryal Castle\, near Ballarat in Regional Victoria. The Festival attracts over 350 historical reenactors and merchants covering time periods from Ancient Greece through to World War Two. \nThe event is run over three days and incorporates a public event\, which is held on the Saturday and Sunday\, and includes a whole range of re-enactment activities to showcase the skills and crafts of the re-enactment community. \nFor full details of this year’s event\, please see below. \n \nThe 2019 Timeline Festival Event \nThe 2019 Timeline Festival will be held on the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of October 2019 at Kryal Castle\, near Ballarat in Victoria. Re-enactors are welcome to attend on Friday the 18th\, which is our traditional re-enactors only day (for registration confirmation and set up). You can keep up to date with information on the public event via Facebook\, just click the button below to get to the event page \nMembers of the public are welcome to wear their own costumes to the event and also highly encouraged to visit the Living History Village outside of the castle and mingle with the reenactors. The Living History Village (on the terraces to the right of the castle) features over 300m of living history displays. How can we better think about the future? \nJoin an esteemed group of critical thinkers for a one-day Seminar to consider these questions of national importance.\nThe Seminar will begin with four noted speakers presenting papers that examine four eras in our national history. \nEach speaker will address five essential questions:\n• What were Australia’s Interests? DESCRIPTION:A German-born Jew but naturalised Victorian\, leading businessman for a well-known Victorian company and Captain in the Australian Volunteer Automobile Corps\, Edwards was arrested in November 1914 and interned for nearly five years without charges\, trial or court martial or right to a defence\, before being secretly de-naturalised and forcibly deported to Germany in 1919\, along with his two Victorian-born children. The Industry Development and Innovation Division is responsible for the support and growth of Victorian industry through the development of strategies\, policy and programs to grow jobs and facilitate investment and trade opportunities. The Manager – Defence\, Aerospace and Security Sector Development leads a small team to support the growth of Victoria’s defence\, aerospace and security industries. \nPreviously Mike was an Artillery Officer\, rising to the Rank of Brigadier when he left the military in 2013. His last talk to us was on the Charge of the Light Brigade\, and he amazed us with some of his display items and his very personal connection to the Crimean War. \nThis Friday his topic will be: Pre-Federation Colonial Arms Again we can expect to be impressed by the quality of his exhibits and his detailed knowledge of them. There will be guns\, swords\, sword slings\, bayonets\, ammunition\, medals and badges from Pre-Federation state militias and police forces\, and from the Boer War. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought\, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. He has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society\, especially of the role of Islam. DESCRIPTION:The Polish Museum and Archives in Australia and The Rats of Tobruk Association\, invites you to the opening of the exhibiton “Destination Australia – Post WW II Odysseys of Polish Soldiers .” \nOn Saturday\, 17 August 2019\, 2 pm at Tobruk House\, 44 Victoria Avenue\, Albert Park\, VIC 3206 \nThe exhibition will be formally opened by Ms Mary Elizabeth Calwell\, daughter of Arthur Calwell (Australia’s first Minister of Immigration)\, who was responsible for the Polish Soldier migrant scheme in Australia in 1947/48. \nIn 1947/48 Australia accepted 1\,500 Polish military who were part of the Polish free forces in the UK and who decided not to return to Poland which was in the Soviet sphere of influence. Thanks to  the lobbying and support of the Australian Rats of Tobruk\, their comrades in arms in 1941\, this special group of men were the prelude to the large post war migration of displaced Poles  to Australia. SUMMARY:4th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial
DESCRIPTION:There have been several events at the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial since the unveiling nearly four years ago. \nLast year’s Commemorative Service and wreath-laying ceremony\, was very well attended. Since the unveiling\, there have been a number of visits by dignitaries including\, His Excellency the Former Australian Ambassador to Greece\, the Former and current Greek Ambassadors to Australia\, the Consul-General of Greece in Melbourne\, several descendants and the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and Deputy Director of the Public Relations Directorate who visited Melbourne. This was the first visit by representatives of the Hellenic Armed Forces to our Memorial. School groups\, representatives of community organizations and international correspondents have also visited the Memorial. \nDuring one of these visits\, Councillor Bernadene Voss\, the then Mayor of the City of Port Phillip announced the formal naming of the Reserve\, on which our Memorial is located\, “Lemnos Square”. \nYou will recall that this bronze Memorial\, of a nurse protecting a weary soldier\, was sculpted by renowned artist Peter Corlett OAM. It recognizes the important role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC story and is dedicated to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915; to the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried there; and to the local community who supported them. \nAs in previous years\, there will be a keynote address\, a wreath-laying ceremony\, a piper\, a commemorative service\, readings from diaries of the Australian soldiers who were on Lemnos in 1915/16\, the reciting of the Ode and of course both the Australian and Greek National Anthems will be performed by the Royal Navy Band. \nWe would be delighted if you could attend this important event. \nCould you please RSVP at leetarlamis@hotmail.com to advise me of your attendance by Friday 26 July 2019.
