DESCRIPTION:The Polish Museum and Archives in Australia and The Rats of Tobruk Association\, invites you to the opening of the exhibiton “Destination Australia – Post WW II Odysseys of Polish Soldiers .” \nOn Saturday\, 17 August 2019\, 2 pm at Tobruk House\, 44 Victoria Avenue\, Albert Park\, VIC 3206 \nThe exhibition will be formally opened by Ms Mary Elizabeth Calwell\, daughter of Arthur Calwell (Australia’s first Minister of Immigration)\, who was responsible for the Polish Soldier migrant scheme in Australia in 1947/48. \nIn 1947/48 Australia accepted 1\,500 Polish military who were part of the Polish free forces in the UK and who decided not to return to Poland which was in the Soviet sphere of influence. Thanks to  the lobbying and support of the Australian Rats of Tobruk\, their comrades in arms in 1941\, this special group of men were the prelude to the large post war migration of displaced Poles  to Australia. SUMMARY:4th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial
DESCRIPTION:There have been several events at the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial since the unveiling nearly four years ago. \nLast year’s Commemorative Service and wreath-laying ceremony\, was very well attended. Since the unveiling\, there have been a number of visits by dignitaries including\, His Excellency the Former Australian Ambassador to Greece\, the Former and current Greek Ambassadors to Australia\, the Consul-General of Greece in Melbourne\, several descendants and the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and Deputy Director of the Public Relations Directorate who visited Melbourne. This was the first visit by representatives of the Hellenic Armed Forces to our Memorial. School groups\, representatives of community organizations and international correspondents have also visited the Memorial. \nDuring one of these visits\, Councillor Bernadene Voss\, the then Mayor of the City of Port Phillip announced the formal naming of the Reserve\, on which our Memorial is located\, “Lemnos Square”. \nYou will recall that this bronze Memorial\, of a nurse protecting a weary soldier\, was sculpted by renowned artist Peter Corlett OAM. It recognizes the important role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC story and is dedicated to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915; to the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried there; and to the local community who supported them. \nAs in previous years\, there will be a keynote address\, a wreath-laying ceremony\, a piper\, a commemorative service\, readings from diaries of the Australian soldiers who were on Lemnos in 1915/16\, the reciting of the Ode and of course both the Australian and Greek National Anthems will be performed by the Royal Navy Band. \nWe would be delighted if you could attend this important event. \nCould you please RSVP at leetarlamis@hotmail.com to advise me of your attendance by Friday 26 July 2019.

SUMMARY:Official history of Australian operations in Iraq\, Afghanistan and East Timor
DESCRIPTION:Roger Lee works at the Australian War Memorial as the author of the Iraq volume of the Official History of Australian Operations in Iraq and the Middle East\, 2001-2014. The Iraq volume will cover the build-up to the 2003 war and the period of reconstruction and mentoring up to Australia’s withdrawal of its military elements in 2011. The project is intended to be completed by December 2022. \n \nBefore moving to the AWM\, Roger was the Army Historian and Head\, Army History Unit\, having occupied this position since 1996. Prior to this\, he was the DSPS (Directing Staff\, Public Service) at the Joint Services Staff College. Before joining Defence\, he worked for a number of Government Departments of which the most interesting was his three and a half years with the Department of the House of Representatives. He was working in the Reps Table Office during the crisis that is now known as ‘the Dismissal’ when the Governor- General brought the term of the Whitlam Government to a premature end. \nDr Lee has been interested in military history and the history of warfare for as long as he can remember\, probably encouraged by a father who served in Bomber Command during World War Two (winning the DFC for his actions in saving his Halifax over the Ruhr). In particular\, his interests centre on command and leadership and the evolving technologies that have so changed the face of battle. He has authored three books and numerous articles and presented several papers to international military history conferences. \nDr Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Queensland\, a Litt.B. from the Australian National University\, a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Studies from Joint Services Staff College\, a Master’s degree in Defence Studies and a PhD from the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. \nDr Lee is happily married to Jenny and has three sons\, a step son and a step daughter. \n.Coffee and Tea from 12.00 pm.\, sandwiches after. DESCRIPTION:(*quoted from the diary of Private L.N. Kennedy of 2/4th Australian Field Ambulance) \n \nAmong the many military histories written about World War II\, the experiences of the men of the Australian Army’s field ambulance units have seldom been considered. This is certainly the case with the Papuan Campaign of 1942 – 1943: Kokoda – Milne Bay – The Beachhead Battles. At no time during this campaign were the Australian soldiers accompanied by fully equipped\, fully supported\, full-strength field ambulance units. The ability to render optimum treatment was compromised by many factors including logistics\, priorities\, leadership and the nature of the campaign itself. \nAlthough geographically close to mainland Australia\, these unarmed medical men and the casualties in their care were effectively isolated in Papua\, yet the challenges they faced were not insurmountable and did not occur in isolation. This presentation considers key themes\, issues and events which impacted on the field ambulance units. Controversial issues such as euthanasia\, self-inflicted wounds\, ‘malingering’\, casualty evacuation (or lack thereof)\, not to mention the wear-and-tear on the medical teams themselves will be discussed. The Japanese bombing of the 2/4th Field Ambulance Main Dressing Station at Soputa in November 1942 will also be covered. \nThe presentation draws on Dr McLeod’s new book “Shadows on the Track: Australia’s Medical War in Papua 1942-1943” covering Kokoda\, Milne Bay and the Beachhead Battles.\nCopies of the book will be available for sale. \nDate: 17 July 2019\nTime: Doors open 6:30 PM. She has also published journal articles and reviews – and presented her research at various conferences. Her Honours thesis contrasted popular representations of medical aspects of the Papuan Campaign with experiences recorded in the personal diary kept one of two great-uncles who served in the 2/4th Australian Field Ambulance during World War Two. Jan’s PhD thesis ‘Within Reach\, Beyond Care’ expanded on this research by critically examining broader aspects of the medical care of Australian soldiers during the Papuan Campaign\, with a focus on the field ambulance units.\nJan has a Diploma in Secondary Education (History and English)\, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)\, and a PhD in History. Her lifelong interest in history\, health and education is reflected in her varied working life – as a student nurse\, adult education tutor\, secondary school teacher of History and English\, road safety education trainer and area co-ordinator\, and research assistant on various university projects.

Between them our assessors have a range of knowledge on different categories including jewellery\, militaria\, antique weapons\, books\, artwork\, porcelain\, ephemera\, medals\, and coins. \nThe limit this year will be 2 items per person to avoid lengthy waiting times. DESCRIPTION:Greece has a centuries-old tradition of armed resistance. \n \nThe Greek word for partisan is Andartes and these fighters fiercely resisted German\, Italian and Bulgarian occupation from 1941 until 1944. Rival groups then turned on each other. \n‘Resistance’ and ‘Underground’ are names used to describe the various secret organisations that arose in European states under enemy occupation during the Second World War. Many Australian servicemen and women gave aid to the Resistance\, other Australians owed their freedom and lives to it. Discover the stories of some of these individuals who\, through accident or design\, found themselves battling the enemy using unconventional means. \nVisitors are advised that this gallery contains graphic images of violence.

He has been awarded a PhD by Deakin University. His thesis\, entitled Battlefield Tourism: Anzac Day Commemorations at Gallipoli is the culmination of a lifelong interest in Gallipoli. \nHis research has been instrumental in bringing a Turkish perspective to understanding the ANZAC campaign. He is a speaker on the subject and has co-authored six books in both English and Turkish which are used widely as resource material for schools\, media\, exhibitions and libraries. John has written many articles and conference papers on his research and made guest appearances on television features and radio programs on Gallipoli. \nFor his outstanding service and individual efforts in uniting cultures\, he received the Victorian Premier’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs in 2005. \nIn 2010\, John was recognised by the RSL as a contributor to understanding and world peace and awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize.
