The profiles reveal just how much these men came from every walk of life and the rich colour of the families and communities they came from. \nIn writing his book\, Michael has been assisted by volunteers from the Totally & Permanently Incapacitated Ex-Servicemen & Women’s Association of Victoria Inc. (TPI Victoria). He has travelled across Australia and around the world to interview families\, peers and friends about these 100 remarkable Australians. All these strands have been brought together to tell the story of the creation of the Victoria Cross\, how it has evolved to find its place in modern Australia\, and to illuminate the lives of these Australians with an incredible array of photographs taken on these travels\, but also from official sources and the families. \nBorn in Melbourne\, Australia\, Michael C Madden is the son of a Totally & Permanently Incapacitated Vietnam veteran. SUMMARY:Sisters and Misters
DESCRIPTION:Sisters and Misters is a Melbourne based vocal group that provides opportunities for people of all ages to sing songs to the wider community whilst improving their self-esteem and confidence\, as well as providing social interaction. The majority of these people come to the group with no previous singing experience Sisters and Misters perform songs from the 60’s through to current hits. \nIn 2011 the group appeared on national television in the talent show Australia’s Got Talent\, they received a standing ovation from all 3 judges and subsequently were one of 48 acts Australia wide to go through to the semi-finals. The group spreads the joy of singing to aged care facilities\, retirement villages\, hospitals\, special need communities\, markets\, festivals\, The Olivia Newton John Wellness Walk\, school fundraisers\, hospitals\, charities\, as well Rotary and Probus functions. \nAs part of their charity work\, the group has in the last few years raised over $72\,000 for cancer research. Sisters & Misters is led by founder and director Irene Bennetts who has been a professional singer over 35 years. This wonderful singing group will be back performing at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Saturday 4 May 2019 from 2.00pm – 3.30pm. \nIt was an outstanding success when they performed at the Museum in 2018 and we are so fortunate to have them back again. This is free concert and they are performing songs for 2 sessions of 35 minutes each. Free entry to the Museum from 1pm onwards. DESCRIPTION:The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne in conjunction with the Battle of Crete & Greece Commemorative Council are hosting an official lecture on Thursday 2nd May 6.30pm by Historian and Author Dr. Peter Ewer titled “Pinios Gorge\, 18th April 1941.” \nFor more information please contact\nMr. Nick Dallas on 0403 047 063. \n \nAt Pineois Gorge on 18 April 1941\, three Anzac infantry battalions fought to prevent the whole of the ANZAC Corps from being cut off by a German flank attack. They took their turn to be smashed into pieces by German armour. Knowing full well what was to come\, the men of these battalions stood their ground until the units of which they were a part were broken into fragments by the weight of panzer fire. \nThe men who died fighting Nazism in this way deserve to live longer in our memory\, and Peter and Dina have been collaborating on research to do that. Based on oral histories from the residents of Ampelakia\, they have sent out to find the Anzac soldiers buried by local villagers immediately after the battle. This is a fascinating story\, in a history that continues to bind together the peoples of Greece\, Australia and New Zealand.

It is as much a story of one man and one family\, as it is the story of all our young men\, who fight anywhere and return home to pick up the pieces. \nActor\, musician and singer/songwriter Brett Hunt brings to the stage with alacrity and passion\, the story of his family and his father Frank Hunt – the eponymous Frankie who ‘kicked the mine the day man landed on the moon’. Just as in John Schuman’s I Was Only 19\, Frank Hunt in Dusted Off is an everyman\, and this one-man play\, through music and monologue\, explores the legacies of war\, of post-traumatic stress\, and of a family’s survival and redemption through intergenerational trauma. \nIt is not a case for war\, nor a glorification\, nor a regret. It is a universal exploration of a young veteran’s motivations\, injuries and efforts to keep a family together through indescribably tough circumstances. Both Ted Baillieu (former Premier of Victoria) and Roland Perry (the author of “MONASH – the Outsider who Won a War”) argue that Sir John was the greatest Australian ever. Professor Bill Brown will relate some interesting facts about Sir John’s life. \nBill Brown was a student at the University of Melbourne where he graduated with an Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) in 1960. While working on his Master of Engineering Science he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to undertake a PhD at Queen’s University\, Belfast. Returning to Melbourne in 1964\, he was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Monash University. In 1967 he became Senior Lecturer\, and then Associate Professor in 1974. Brown’s research interests were in control systems; initially the theory of computer control and then the application of computer control in the bioengineering area. Brown was heavily involved in the establishment of a number of major centres in the department as well as the negotiations related to the amalgamation with the Chisholm Institute of Technology.

DESCRIPTION:When the last shots were fired on 11th November\, 1918 and the Great War came to an end it was of course not the end. \n \n \nThe consequences and the fallout from the four years of unprecedented carnage were only beginning; the effects on the nations and the people of the world would play out over many years to come. Empires crumbled\, national boundaries were re-drawn and in international affairs the seeds of the next global conflict were being sown. These broad-scale effects were being seen in Australia but we were also affected significantly at a personal level. So many young men were killed or seriously disabled that there would not have been a family in Australia who was not affected in some way by this nation-wide bereavement. \nOn Saturday\, 6th April 2019\, Military History and Heritage Victoria will hold a conference to explore the effects of the war and its aftermath on Australia at a national level and on the Australian people at a personal level. We will hear papers on the repatriation of the AIF from Europe and the Middle East; the impact on Australia’s relations with the world; the effects on Australian society; the soldier settlement scheme; the work of the Repatriation Commission and the heart-breaking efforts of bereaved families to find information about killed or missing loved ones.
