SUMMARY:The Australian Railway Companies of the Western Front\, 1916-1918
DESCRIPTION:A Public Lecture by Lt-Col David Deasey (retd) \n\nCharles Bean mentions Australia’s railway units in perhaps half a dozen places in his Official History of Australians in the Great War and then mainly in footnotes. They were never part of the initial offer by Australia to Britain in 1914. Yet by 1918\, Australia had effectively deployed a railway regiment of about 1\,500 soldiers operating in France. So how and why did they get there and how did a group\, which despite contradicting Australian policy and initially not legally part of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF)\, end up being very much part of the AIF? What role did they play\, and as a side issue\, how did ten New South Wales Government Railways designed locomotives end up wandering about France? \n\n\nClick here to download the flyer for this lecture. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\nLieutenant Colonel (retd) David Deasey RFD OAM served in the Australian Army Reserve for 33 years before retiring\, and between 1995 and 1997 in the capacity of Commanding Officer of the University of NSW Regiment. He is the co-author of The History of the University of NSW Regiment 1952-2006 (2009). David is also a retired teacher having taught English and history at various schools for 37 years. In 2019 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “for service to community history” particularly in connection with his work as chair of the National Boer War Memorial Association’s NSW Committee. He is a member of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) for Defence and Security Studies\, New South Wales. DESCRIPTION:The Military History Society of NSW presents “Who won the Battle of Beersheba\, 1917? British Infantry did most of the killing and dying. \nThe Beersheba Battle of 31 October 1917 is generally known as a marvellous victory of the Australian Light Horse. For many years\, the anniversary of the victory have been commemorated with popular ceremonies in Australia and Israel. Enthusiasts proudly reenact the great charge of the light horsemen. However\, most Australians are not aware that three British infantry divisions (53rd\, 60th and 74th\, as well as a brigade from the 10th (Irish) Division) took part in the battle. Not only were the British more numerous than the Australian Light Horse\, but they also launched their attack first\, crashing the Ottoman main defence and providing an opportunity for the Australians to unleash their mounted manoeuvre. He is a graduate of the Turkish Military Academy (1991). He got an MA in politics and a PhD in international relations at Istanbul University. During his military career he served as a platoon leader and company and battalion commander in various infantry units\, completing several tours as a United Nations military observer in Georgia and as a staff officer in Afghanistan and Bosnia. He served as an associate professor at the Turkish Military Academy for ten years and the University of New South Wales for five years. He is currently professor of international relations at Antalya Bilim University in Turkey. He is the author or co-author of The Ottoman Army and the First World War (Routledge\, 2022); The Phaseline Attila: The Amphibious Campaign for Cyprus\, 1974 (Marine Corps University Press\, 2020); The Ottoman Defence against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 (Australian Army History Unit Campaign Series\, 2015); A Military History of the Ottomans: From Osman to Atatürk (Praeger\, 2009); and numerous articles and book chapters. SUMMARY:'Highland Chieftains': The Officers of The Black Watch
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Ruadhan Scrivener-Anderson as he looks at selection\, socialisation and the development of group identity within The Black Watch in the lead-up to the First World War. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\nBetween 1902 and 1918\, over 2\,000 commissioned officers served in The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)\, with 25 battalions formed for service during the First World War (1914-18). By the time of the Armistice in November 1918\, more than 8\,000 members of the regiment had lost their lives. \nIn this talk\, Dr Ruadhan Scrivener-Anderson will examine why certain individuals were chosen to lead Scotland’s soldiers in both peacetime and wartime\, focusing on their social status\, national identity and experiences of soldiering and leadership. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\nDr Ruadhán Scrivener-Anderson is a historian of late 19th- and early 20th-century Scotland. His PhD thesis focused on the commissioned officers of The Black Watch from around 1902 to 1918\, examining selection\, social status and national identity. He is currently undertaking research on the relationship between Victorian and Edwardian Scottish landed elites and the Army. \nHe is a member of staff in the University Collections Department (Archival Collections) and a tutor in the School of History at the University of St Andrews.

Eighty years later\, their intriguing stories are starting to emerge. \nAs World War II climbed to its crescendo in the Asia-Pacific\, the Australian government called in a new weapon: women. Within this female arsenal was a top-secret group focused on signals intelligence. \nThese young women\, many just teens\, were soon dotted across Australia\, working in discreet locations – from an outback bunker disguised as a farmhouse to a Melbourne apartment block\, from the garage of a Brisbane manor to a Perth girls’ school. As war inched closer to home\, they became our secret weapon\, intercepting enemy messages and passing intelligence between local networks and allies across the globe\, from Bletchley Park to the United States and across the Asia-Pacific. Some information was so sensitive it was burned to ensure its security. Their covert work helped the Allies win the pivotal battles of the Coral Sea and Midway\, and plot the assassination of the Japanese commander behind the Pearl Harbour bombings. \nWhen war ended\, the women rejoiced. Demobilised and reminded of their oaths of secrecy\, they returned to civilian lives. Some followed careers\, others married and raised families. She also wrote a thesis on forgotten women that almost included a sealed section\, all in pursuit of a good story. A journalist\, historian and teacher\, Diana has worked for The Australian\, including its weekend magazine\, and The Times in London. She has studied Australian history\, with a focus on gender\, at Macquarie University\, and ancient Egyptian literature at Monash University. After lecturing in journalism for many years\, her passion for history inspired her to become a teacher\, and she works at a Melbourne girls’ school. Her work appears widely in Australia and beyond\, and her feature article on Australian World War II spy Nancy Wake\, whose wartime story was then little known\, inspired her interest in this covert field. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The British Army at Long Island\, New York\, 1776\n\n \n\nA Public Lecture by Robert Muscat\n\n\nThe British withdrawal from Boston in early 1776 sparked numerous celebrations across the northern colonies and in Congress. Many thought it would lead to a new round of negotiations with London to secure more favourable liberties. However\, John Adams and General George Washington were more committed to the cause and began preparations to meet British General Sir William Howe’s next target − New York. Howe\, while regrouping in Halifax\, was in correspondence with Lord Germain\, Secretary of State for America\, on the strategic importance of New York because of its safe and deep harbour\, large Loyalist population\, location as gateway to Canada via the Hudson valley and its mercantile infrastructure. By late August 1776\, Howe amassed an army of 32\,000 men and a flotilla numbering 400 ships with the intent of capturing Long Island and then staging an invasion of New York Island (Manhattan). The battle which ensued was perfectly executed and the British convincingly defeated the American defenders\, but Howe’s reluctance to complete the victory and possibly end the rebellion would be hotly debated from his time up to the present. In the battle’s aftermath\, American General Israel Putnam was prompted to remark “Howe is either our friend or no general.” \n\n\nClick here to download the flyer for this lecture. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\nRobert Muscat is President of the Military History Society of New South Wales. He holds two masters degrees in Education and is currently the principal of a high school in western Sydney. Robert is a former rifleman in the Australian Army Reserve and has spoken and written about military history in various forums\, including in the Society’s lecture program and magazine\, Reconnaissance. In August 2017 he gave a lecture to the Society on the Saratoga Campaign of the American Revolutionary War which was published as an article in the Autumn 2019 Issue of Reconnaissance. DESCRIPTION:This lecture will discuss a group of Second World War Australian servicemen who performed the bulk of their service in Yugoslavia. \n \n \nCaptured in Greece in 1941\, they escaped in transit to occupied Yugoslavia and became embroiled in the war of resistance against Axis occupation. And later\, in the civil war between the two resistance factions\, the Partisans and the Četniks. Several of these Australians were later recruited as agents of Special Operations Executive (SOE) and\, in the assessment of the speaker\, provided the most accurate intelligence of any Allied sources from that theatre\, save Ultra. \nSpeaker – Edmund Goldrick\nEdmund Goldrick is a historian and bookseller from Canberra. He has lived in the UK\, Germany\, and Slovenia\, and in 2020 was hired as co-author and researcher for Neil Churches’ The Greatest Escape\, an account of the hundred man breakout from Stalag XVIII D. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 November 2025 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n \nThe presentation \nBorneo – The Last Campaign \nBorneo: The Last Campaign tells the story of Operation OBOE\, the massive\, three-pronged assault on the vast Japanese-held island of Borneo in 1945. It was one of the largest amphibious invasions of the entire war\, and a virtually all-Australian operation. \nOver the final twelve weeks of World War Two\, the 1st Australian Army Corps chased down and fought the remnants of the Japanese army over burning oil fields\, up languid tropical rivers\, along leech-ridden jungle tracks and across endless hills\, valleys and ridges. Far from being the easy ‘mopping-up’ the men had been told to expect\, Borneo turned out to be as savage as anything the Aussies had hitherto encountered in the Pacific\, as the Japanese – despite the inevitability of their defeat – continued fighting with fanaticism\, tenacity and shocking brutality. \nImmensely complex but brilliantly planned\, OBOE called for Australia’s two most famous Infantry Divisions – the 7th and 9th – to storm ashore at three separate landing areas supported by US and Australian naval forces and local Dyak guerrilla fighters. Their objectives were to secure Borneo’s oil facilities and liberate its long-suffering people. \nAlthough now largely forgotten\, as well as mired in the controversy that it had little effect on the overall outcome of the war\, the skill\, bravery and determination showed by the average Australian soldier on Borneo – many of whom were fighting their one and only battle of the war – is beyond question. OBOE involved more than 70\,000 Australian military personnel\, of which over 2000 became casualties\, with nearly 600 killed. It was also where the two final Australian Victoria Crosses of the war were won\, as well as literally dozens of other awards for bravery. \nOBOE was superbly executed\, achieved all of its objectives\, and was the very last sustained Allied action of World War Two. \nDrawing on a myriad of firsthand sources and interviews with the two last surviving veterans\, Borneo: The Last Campaign examines the lead-up\, the landings and the campaign itself in never-before published detail. \n \nThe Presenter: Michael Veitch \nMichael Veitch is well known as an author\, actor and former ABC television and radio presenter. Within this female arsenal was a group so significant that the women who bravely assumed these roles were sworn to secrecy – a vow that was to outlive the war. \nAs war inched closer to home\, they became a secret weapon\, intercepting enemy messages and passing intelligence between local networks and allies across the globe\, from Bletchley Park to the United States and across the Asia-Pacific. Some information was so sensitive it was burned to ensure its security. \nThey were among the thousands of women\, many still teenagers\, who stepped up to join the army\, the navy and the air force during the war\, taking on unprecedented roles during an international crisis. Victory attained\, they demobilised and returned home. Secret work or not\, their roles have remained largely untold. Until now. \nThis is not just an extraordinary war story\, but a coming-of-age tale for the nation and its women. It is time to write these remarkable women back into our history\, where they belong. \nAbout the author \nDiana Thorp has scaled a pyramid\, excavated a Bronze Age palace and been threatened by a deadly war spy. She also wrote a thesis on forgotten women that almost included a sealed section\, all in pursuit of a good story. A journalist\, historian and teacher\, Diana has worked for The Australian\, including its weekend magazine\, and The Times in London. She has studied Australian history\, with a focus on gender\, at Macquarie University\, and ancient Egyptian literature at Monash University. After lecturing in journalism for many years\, her passion for history inspired her to become a teacher\, and she works at a Melbourne girls’ school.
