The Greek word for partisan is Andartes and these fighters fiercely resisted German\, Italian and Bulgarian occupation from 1941 until 1944. Rival groups then turned on each other.\n‘Resistance‚Äô and ‚ÄòUnderground‚Äô are names used to describe the various secret organisations that arose in European states under enemy occupation during the Second World War. Many Australian servicemen and women gave aid to the Resistance\, other Australians owed their freedom and lives to it. Discover the stories of some of these individuals who\, through accident or design\, found themselves battling the enemy using unconventional means. \nVisitors are advised that this gallery contains graphic images of violence.

The Secretary will ensure your nominations are signed by two members of the Committee if you are not able to obtain nomination signatures yourself. How did this happen? This conference\, drawing on key participants and decision makers\, explores how it came about that between 2001 and 2014 over 50\,000 members of the Australian Defence Force fought in the Middle East Area of Operations…‚ÄòWar in the Sand Pit‚Äô. \nTo date\, little is known and few works have been written about Australia‚Äôs longest of military conflicts. With the Official History for these wars still some years away it is time to undertake some preliminary analysis of this period in our history. This conference will pose some thought provoking questions and push for some coherent answers. \nWhat happened? How well did we understand the nature of the fight? Why did Australia contribute the way it did? Were there other viable approaches? Did Australia‚Äôs contribution add value to the coalitions? What lessons can be learned for the future? DESCRIPTION:The next War Veterans Luncheon will be held on Wednesday October 11 with our guest speaker The Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson\, AO.\nDr Brendan Nelson commenced as Director of the Australian War Memorial on 17 December 2012. Prior to this\, he was the Australian Ambassador to Belgium\, Luxembourg\, the European Union and NATO (2009‚Äì12). \nBorn in Coburg\, Victoria\, in 1958\, Dr Nelson studied at Flinders University\, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. He worked as a doctor in Hobart from 1985 to 1995. \nIn 1993 he became National President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and retired as president in 1995 following his preselection as the Liberal candidate for the Sydney seat of Bradfield. \nIn 1996 Dr Nelson was elected to the Federal Parliament of Australia. In 2001 he was appointed Minister for Education\, Science and Training; in 2006 he became Minister for Defence when troops were deployed to Iraq\, Afghanistan\, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. \nIn 2007 he was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Australia\, serving as Leader of the Opposition. In 2009 he retired from federal politics before taking up his ambassadorial appointment. \nDr Nelson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in January 2016 for his services to the community\, the parliament of Australia\, diplomacy and cultural leadership. \nVisit the MCC website to book \n
