SUMMARY:The war on our doorstep  Australians in New Guinea 1943-45
DESCRIPTION:Australian success in Papua between July 1942 and January 1943 checked the Japanese southward advance but the victories at Kokoda\, Milne Bay and the Beachheads did not remove the Japanese presence in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea to Papua’s north. From early 1943\, Australian troops embarked upon a series of campaigns in the Mandate–at Wau (29 January – 6 February 1943)\, Salamaua–Lae (April–September 1943)\, Finisterre Range (September 1943 – April 1944) and Huon Peninsula (September 1943 – March 1944) which eradicated the enemy threat from mainland New Guinea once and for all. These campaigns\, the subject of this exhibition\, were the largest series of interconnected operations ever undertaken by the Australian military and proved every bit as gruelling and hard fought as the earlier\, more celebrated campaigns in Papua. The latter New Guinea campaigns saw Australia’s troops hone the skills and demonstrate the prowess which\, by war’s end\, had made them the world’s finest jungle fighters.\nThis temporary exhibition is located in the the Galleries of Remembrance\, a $45 million Victorian Government redevelopment that utilises 1\,600 square metres of undercroft space that exists beneath the Shrine of Remembrance. Over 800 objects are included in permanent and temporary exhibition spaces which illustrate the experiences of Australians at war and in peacekeeping operations\, from Pre-Federation to the present day\, with a particular focus on individual and unit stories of Victorian service and sacrifice. \nLast admission to the Galleries of Remembrance is 4.30pm.

DESCRIPTION:‘Vietnam – Their War\, Their Stories’ – Join us from 6:30 for 7:00-8:00pm on Wednesday 10th August when we have as special guests a select group of Vietnam veterans to give their personal reflections\, memories and stories of that long war.¬†\n \nThe panel format will feature: \n\nBruce Davies\, MBE\, a decorated member of the Australian Army Training Team who worked closely with Vietnamese soldiers over three tours\nLinda George\, an entertainer who came to Vietnam to support the diggers and nurses despite the dangers\nJim Archbold\, MM\, a military policeman who won a Military Medal while working with the Americans\nKen Dusting\, a RAN signaller working in the escorts for the fast troopship HMAS Sydney.\nThe Panel will also be joined by a veteran airman on the night\n\nThe presentation will also include context and insights from the Vietnam official historian and MHHV vice-patron\, Dr Peter Edwards\, AM. \nThe series of insightful and in-depth military history seminars by Military History & Heritage Victoria Inc. SUMMARY:A Noble Son Fall’n to Earth
DESCRIPTION:It is thought that about 600 or so Australians served with the RFC\, the RNAS or the RAF in the Great War. In a number of cases some of these 600 had paid their own way to England to realise their flying dream and it is recorded that over 100 lost their lives as result of their war service. One of those young Australians who died in the service of the RFC was Lt. Lyle Buntine\, the eldest son of the Principal of Caulfield Grammar School. An outstanding athlete and medical student\, he joined the AAMC\, was commissioned into the British Army\, saw active service on the Western Front during the early months of the Battle of the Somme in 1916\, and was severely wounded in a gallant flying action for which he won the Military Cross Рbefore he won the MC he had been shot down six times.\nTragically killed in a flying accident in Scotland some months later\, his family mourned his death from afar and collected and preserved every artefact and 160 letters and associated correspondence and papers from their “Noble Son Fall’n to Earth” written and collected by Lyle during his two years of active service. The efforts of his family and school to preserve his memory and honour his sacrifice are notable amongst Australians\, especially given that he was not an ANZAC and is seen by the AWM as being killed in the service of another country. \nDr Daryl Moran is a school teacher who holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Melbourne. A committee member of Military History and Heritage Victoria (MHHV)\, he has acted as convenor for conferences at the RAAF Museum Point Cook Air Force about Australia’s Air War in World Wars I and II. Daryl is completing a Master of Arts degree at Monash University where he has been undertaking research surrounding “War and Memory” with a focus on World War 1. In particular he is studying the manner in which schools and society of the time prepared boys for military service\, encouraged their enlistment into the armed forces of the Empire and marked their service and sacrifice. \nEntry Fee $5 for MHHV Members and $10 others Рincludes a drink and snacks

SUMMARY:A Matter of Honour – the 5th VMR and Wilmansrust 1901
DESCRIPTION:by Australia‚Äôs foremost Boer War historian\, Dr Robin Droogleever. The 5th VMR was the largest of the eight contingents sent by Victoria to the Boer War.¬† It also suffered the most casualties\, most notably at the action at Wilmansrust after which it was accused of cowardice\, as a ‚Äòdamned fat\, round shouldered\, useless crowd of wasters . . . white-livered curs . . . You can add dogs too.‚Äô Dr Droogleever investigates the charges and the record of the 5th VMR\n \nDr. Robin Droogleever is the President of the Anglo Boer War Study Group of Australasia and has written a number of books on the Boer War. He edited Banjo Paterson’s letters From the Front and has written a number of regimental histories including of Thorneycrofts Mounted Infantry in the Boer War; the campaign record of the Victorian Bushmen in the Boer War\, titled That Ragged Mob\, and a similar history of the 1st and 2nd Victorian Contingents to the Boer War\, titled Colonel Tom’s Boys. The regimental history of the 5th Victorian Contingent\, titled A Matter of Honour\, will be published in 2016. ¬†He co-authored a resource book on the Boer War with Max Chamberlain titled The War with Johnny Boer. \nSynopsis of the talk ‚Äì A Matter of Honour ‚Äì the 5VMR in the Boer War.  \nTHE 5th VMR has not fared well at the hands of Australian historians who have condemned it as a unit which brought the good name of the Australian soldier into disrepute. After what was at first a negative knee jerk reaction to the defeat of the left wing of the unit at Wilmansrust in June 1901\, the truth finally prevailed and the unit was ultimately to regain not only its own honour but the honour of the Australian soldier. Strangely enough\, it is not the extraordinary hard work undertaken to regain that honour that historians applaud but they prefer to judge the unit solely on its defeat at Wilmansrust. Colonel Stuart Beatson\, in whose column the 5VMR\, had been placed\, led the attack\, and the public was denied the truth of events before\, at and after Wilmansrust. Australian newspapers found it impossible to get any official report into the disaster for months afterwards and it was during this time that most of the mischief developed. \nI accept that the 5VMR had problems but on close inspection they were very little different from the problems that earlier contingents had faced. The men who joined up were from the same mould as those who had fought bravely before in the earlier contingents so there was little reason to believe that they could be justifiably termed ‚Äòwhite livered curs and wasters‚Äô as Beatson called them. As more and more was learnt about the real reasons for the easy victory of the Boers at Wilmansrust\, it became clear that the conclusions made by the court of inquiry into the disaster were not a true reflection of circumstances. At the heart of it was Beatson but even his role has been distorted by the passage of time and evidence was to be mis-used by the Victorian press to the extent that he became a villain of the very worst type. The mud had not only stuck to the 5VMR; it was now all over Beatson as well. Much of that mud still sticks to both today. The ‚ÄòDigger‚Äô website which claims to speak for the Australian soldier past and present\, has a photo of the 5VMR monument with the question ‚ÄòMonument to Cowards?‚Äô What a question to pose! It is simply an insult that I hope this talk will set aside for the rubbish that it is and show listeners that this was not only a unit which regained its honour but is a unit that we can certainly be proud of. \n

SUMMARY:Foxholes of the Mind by Bernard Clancy
DESCRIPTION:Bernard Clancy’s riveting stage play about PTSD\, Foxholes of the Mind\, is all set to go on tour in August this year.Tickets go on sale in early July. \nFoxholes premiered at La Mama theatre in Carlton in 2010 to virtually full houses. It had a profound effect on veterans\, wives and families and was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. \nThis 2016 production is an updated version of the original play. Playwright Bernard Clancy says: “I originally wrote Foxholes because I wanted to highlight the tragedy of PTSD\, to try to stop the terrible waste and destruction of the human spirit that PTSD entails. \nThe play will be directed again by Wolf Heidecker. His production company\, Larrikin Ensemble Theatre\, is the producer under the auspices of the Geelong Sub-Branch of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia in association with Auspicious Arts Projects Inc and Wyndham Community Arts Alliance Inc.  As such\, the tour is a non-commercial activity. SUMMARY:First drafts of History: Rediscovering Victoria’s war correspondents
DESCRIPTION:From the Boer War to Vietnam and beyond\, Australians have long relied on war correspondents to bring home reports from the front lines of conflict.¬†Rediscover Victoria‚Äôs war correspondents including Alan Moorehead at a presentation by historians Dr Fay Anderson and Garrie Hutchinson\nAustralia has an impressive and enduring tradition of war journalism\, correspondents cinematographers\, artists and photographers who covered wars involving Australian troops and major conflicts\, which did not. Victoria has contributed to this roll call producing some of our most prominent journalists and photographers. My talk will examine two World War I correspondents\, Philip Schuler and Keith Murdoch and a defining group who were accredited during World War II most notably Damien Parer\, Chester Wilmot\, and the maverick Wilfred Burchett. There are also two less well-known names who deserve our attention\, Godfrey Blunden who alerted Australia to the Holocaust\, and Sam White\, a quixotic fellow traveller. It‚Äôs timely to reflect on war journalism\, its role as the first draft of history and to rediscover some of Victoria‚Äôs war correspondents and their compelling life stories. \nAssociate Professor Fay Anderson is a media historian in the School of Media\, Film and Journalism at Monash University. She has published widely on war\, journalism\, oral history\, the military\, biography\, genocide\, and memory. Witnesses to War: The History of Australian Conflict Reporting was co-authored by Fay and Richard Trembath and published in 2011. Fay‚Äôs and Sally Young‚Äôs co-authored book\, Shooting the Picture: A History of Australian Press Photography\, will be published in August 2016 by MUP. \nGarrie Hutchinson has written or edited more than 30 books including¬†Eyewitness: Australians write from the Front-line\,¬†Pilgrimage: A Traveller‚Äôs Guide to Australia‚Äôs Battlefields\,¬†Pilgrimage: A Traveller‚Äôs Guide to New Zealanders in Two World Wars\,¬†An Australian Odyssey: From Giza to Gallipoli¬†and¬†Not Going to Vietnam: Journeys through Two Wars. He is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and also completing a PhD on those who sailed to the First World War on the flagship of the first convoy\, the¬†Orvieto. \nParis\, France. 1945-02-18. From toy tanks and patriotic badges\, to message rockets\, battlefront inventions and the Anzac brand\, Cama investigates the many designs\, trade marks and patents registered during the First World War.\nThe diverse records held at IP Australia and Australia‚Äôs other cultural institutions have not only revealed these hidden inventions\, but also the pervasiveness of the war itself and its impact on the home front. Some Australians saw it as their duty to innovate at such a crucial time\, while Anzac trade marks illustrate the potency of the ‚ÄòAnzac spirit‚Äô and how it was adopted to sell and promote products. Overall\, the quirky designs produced during this period reflect changing attitudes to the war; some manifested in items of patriotic support\, while others made trinkets of hope and loss. \n  \nCost: Members $3.00. Australia felt the heat of the Cold War and the throes of a youth revolution\, in the year the first baby boomers came of age. Fifty years on\, this exhibition tells the story of a year that changed the Australia and the world.\nThis exhibition\, at the Shrine of Remembrance Melbourne\, will run from 4 April 2016 until 31 March 2017. There is no entrance fee to visit this Exhibition\, which will also be exhibiting items on loan from Vietnam Veterans who were in Vietnam at that time. Opening hours 10am – 5pm daily. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day.
