SUMMARY:Symposium: Allied co-operation in Brisbane during WWII: Australia\, USA\, Netherlands\, UK
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks 80 years since the end of World War II in the Pacific—a defining moment in global history and in Brisbane’s legacy as a key Allied command centre. \nTo commemorate this milestone\, the Camp Columbia Heritage Association and the support over 20 national and international organisations\, will host a major international symposium and guided tour from 30–31 August. \n\nThis two-day hybrid symposium brings together scholars\, veterans’ groups\, heritage experts\, students\, and the general public to explore Brisbane’s wartime and post-war role as a vital Allied hub. Topics will range from military strategy\, diplomacy and logistics to civilian experiences\, migration\, and memory. \nConfirmed speakers will present on topics related to Australia\, the United States\, the Netherlands\, the UK\, and Netherlands East Indies. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage in discussions\, panel sessions\, and exhibitions. Representatives of Allied governments have also been invited. \nThe University of Queensland is a supporter of the Camp Columbia Heritage Association. They have conducted archeologic research at the site of the former camp. As such our symposium is hosted as a UQ Community Event. The St Lucia Campus was during WII the HQ of the South-West Pacific Area (SWPA) Advanced Land Headquarters led by Australian General Thomas Blamey\, who was Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces (AMF) and also had the role of Commander\, Allied Land Forces. \nMax 80 delegates per day \nGuided Tour 1 September\nExplore Brisbane’s WWII history on a guided tour of significant sites—from inner-city military headquarters to outer suburban camps like Camp Columbia. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 20 August 2025 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n \nPhil explores two stories from the final year of the war that carry great Australia interest\, stories that highlight what he calls the ‘imperial muscle memory’ which makes British policy in the Pacific and SE Asia regions. \nFirst the decision to re-impose French control of Indochina\, and to use Japanese Prisoners Of War in that bloody process. Was it necessary ‘realpolitik’ or a flagrant breach of the principles for which the Allies were supposed to be fighting – first articulated in the Atlantic Charter? This little known story explains why Vietnam was set up for 30 more years of war\, war that would eventually involve Australia\, the USA and cause huge physical and human damage to Vietnam\, Cambodia and Laos. \nSecondly the famous Australia Special Forces Operation Semut in Borneo. Phil delves into the reasoning behind this controversial mission\, explains how it developed into a messy jungle war of head hunting and threatened court martial – with classic Anglo-Aussie rivalries making their presence felt as well – and also asks whether or not it sealed the fate of the Australian prisoners at Sandakan. \n \nThe Presenter: Phil Craig\nPhil Craig is a best-selling author and multiple award-winning film maker.\nA former RAF cadet pilot\, he studied at Cambridge University\, was a BBC graduate trainee and built his career working for the iconic British TV series World in Action and Panorama. SUMMARY:100th Anniversary of the US NAVY fleet visit to Melbourne in 1908
DESCRIPTION:MMHN Director\, Michael O’Brien\, is presenting at the Naval Historical Society of Australia. \nThe visit of the Great White Fleet\, as it came to be known\, was the start of Australia’s defence relationship with the US. Commencing with the visit of a smaller Great White Fleet to Sydney in 1908\, Melbourne (as the official capital of Australia and temporary seat of Federal Parliament at the time) later received a larger contingent of 43 vessels in 1925. Many US Navy battleships\, cruisers and destroyers arrived on a voyage designed to impress Japan about American sea power and to cement the relationship with Australia and New Zealand. It became known as the largest foreign naval fleet to visit Australian shores\, and the Australian public gave them a tremendous welcome. \nWhen: Monday 23rd June\, 7:00pm. Our latest exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance\, offering a nostalgic experience that\, for the first time\, delves into the forgotten designs for Victoria’s War Memorial. \n \nExplore the entries of the 1921 War Memorial design competition\, each a testament to the social and political tapestry of that time. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken. SUMMARY:White over Green: 2nd/4th Australian Infantry Battalion
DESCRIPTION:On 17 May\, the former Pheasants Nest Hume Motorway signage of Edward Kenna VC will be presented to the Edward Kenna VC Other Ranks Mess in the Edward Kenna VC courtyard at the headquarters of the 4th/3rd Battalion of the Royal New South Wales Regiment at Sutherland. \n \nThis will mark the eightieth anniversary\, almost to the day\, of Kenna’s heroics on 14 May 1945 in the capture by the 2nd/4th Australian Infantry Battalion of Wirui Mission near Wewak\, for which he would receive the Victoria Cross. \nFollowing the capture of Salamaua\, Lae and Finschhafen\, the 6th Australian Division was deployed to New Guinea in early 1945 to relieve the Americans\, who General MacArthur preferred to utilise elsewhere. Its brigades – the 16th\, 17th and 19th – included\, in the 16th\, three battalions of New South Wales origin – the 2/1st\, 2/2nd and 2/3rd; and in the 19th\, another – the 2/4th. \nBetween late April and early July 1945\, the 6th Australian Division advanced from the Hawain River eastwards along the New Guinea Coast to Wewak – the last sea-based fortress of the Japanese in Papua New Guinea\, with long prepared extensive defences\, on terrain which dictated that the attack had to be entrusted to a single battalion. This would be the 2/4th. \nDrawing on the work of former society patron Major General Gordon Maitland\, and the 2nd/4th Battalion’s history White over Green\, this lecture describes the feats of a New South Wales infantry battalion\, which had already distinguished itself in 1941 in North Africa\, Greece and Crete\, in these concluding battles of the campaign\, in which it earned the battle honours ‘Wewak’\, ‘Wirui Mission’\, and ‘Mount Shiburango-Mount Tazaki’\, and the theatre honour ‘Liberation of Australian New Guinea’. \nOf the heritage and battle honours of the 2/4th Battalion\, today’s 4th/3rd Battalion of the Royal New South Wales Regiment is the custodian. \nLECTURE TIME AND VENUE: 10:30AM Saturday 7 June 2025 at The Auditorium\, Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, Hyde Park South\, corner Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD. \n Admission is free of charge but a donation would be appreciated. DESCRIPTION:This one-day conference will explore the numerous ways Australia was attacked during the Second World War.\n \n \n \nBetween 1939 and 1945\, over 1\,800 enemy air raids targeted northern Australia\, while the nation’s coastal waters were patrolled by raiders\, sea mines\, and submarines. \nPeople of various backgrounds—friends\, foes\, and families—were interned in heavily guarded camps for the duration of the war. \nA Japanese prisoner-of-war breakout resulted in fatalities and widespread panic. \nThese stories\, and many more\, will be examined. \nWhat happened? \nWho was involved? \nHow did the nation cope with the “menace at home” while simultaneously fighting a war on multiple fronts overseas? \nThe keynote address will be delivered by Professor David Horner. SUMMARY:Educating Professional Soldiers in Military History - A Public Lecture by Dr Mesut Uyar
DESCRIPTION:Military history as a discipline has always been seen and classified as part of military education. \n\n \n \n\nNot surprisingly there is a common conception – albeit a wrong one – that military academies and staff colleges are the bastions of military history. Very few people notice that most of military historians are actually working in civilian universities and military history programs in universities have generally better academic ratings. Although military leaders seem to place great emphasis on drawing lessons from military history\, it appears that military history programs in higher military educational institutes are simply not flourishing and actually losing ground. Then the obvious question is what is going on with professional military education? Is military history\, as an academic discipline\, an essential part of the current professional military education? If not\, why is that? And finally\, what is the way ahead? \nThis presentation is an effort to analyse these questions within the history of professional military education. Dr Uyar is a war studies and military history expert specializing in late Ottoman and modern Turkish military. She became more involved in acting when she moved to Wangaratta in the early 1990s and has performed with many companies across Victoria. \nBrenda Spilva plays Bridie Cartwright \nBrenda has a long-standing history of drama and performing and started acting in primary school. Her love of theatre has seen her perform in plays and musicals spanning more than 20 years with recent performances for local theatre companies. SUMMARY:2025 ANZAC Day Lunch - So Much Blood\, So Much Bravery – Was it worth it?
DESCRIPTION:We rightly spend much personal and national emotion on remembering the Great War and indeed all wars. \nWe focus on the carnage\, the loss of sons and brothers and on the exploits of our troops. \nBut what did it all mean? \nDid we achieve what we anticipated when we got into the war? \nAt the end of World War 1 the world changed dramatically\, empires were obliterated\, new nations were born and new national boundaries were drawn; the demographic balance of the nations involved was drastically altered by the war’s casualties; the economies of nations were impoverished. \nThe arrangements for peace negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference were driven by a hard desire for revenge on the one hand but also a strong desire to ensure this war could not be repeated. DESCRIPTION:Gather at dawn to honour the service and sacrifice of generations of Australians—and all those affected by war. \nThe service begins at first light\, marking the time of the Gallipoli landing in 1915—the first major military action by Australian and New Zealand forces (ANZACs) during the First World War. \nExperience a moving ceremony featuring recitations\, hymns\, wreath-laying\, and an address by the Governor of Victoria. Large screens around the Shrine ensure everyone can follow the proceedings. \nThe Dawn Service concludes at 6:30am. Afterward\, visitors are invited to place a poppy at the Stone of Remembrance inside the monument. \nAll are welcome. No tickets or bookings required. \nThe Veterans’ March\nJoin us in honouring those who have served—and continue to serve—in the defence of Australia and its interests. \nThe march begins on Swanston Street (near Federation Square) and proceeds along St Kilda Road to the Shrine of Remembrance. Vehicles carrying aged and mobility-impaired veterans depart at 8:30am\, followed by marching participants at 9am. He is a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute in Kviv\, a public institution affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to strengthen Ukraine’s international standing through the means of cultural diplomacy. \nHe has a MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA and MA from the National University of Kviv. \nMr Myroshnychenko has over 20 years’ experience in strategic communications and government relations\, working with the Ukrainian government\, NGOs and Ukrainian clients in Washington\, London\, Brussels\, Frankfurt\, Davos and the Gulf. \nMr Myroshnychenko was the co-founder of the news agency\, Ukraine Crisis Media\, and the CEO/Partner of CFC Big Ideas\, an international communications consultancy. DESCRIPTION:Join author Jeff Steel as he recounts the incredible adventures of Neil Lindsay in World War Two from his book “The Impossible Survivor”. \nNeil Lindsay was a Melbourne boy. When he volunteered for RAF Bomber Command in the darkest days of World War Two\, he rapidly discovered that survival was unlikely. He pressed on. \nHe flew in the prestigious 106 squadron\, with the legendary Guy Gibson VC of Dambuster fame. On his 28th operation\, he was the sole survivor from a catastrophic explosion in his Lancaster bomber. \nIt could not be written as fiction: no one would believe it. Among other things\, this talk describes his survival from the burning aircraft\, his role in the famous Great Escape\, and the Luftwaffe’s subtle techniques of persuading him to talk. \n“The Impossible Survivor” will be available for sale on the day of event.
