SUMMARY:Guerillas of Tanganyika: WW1 campaign in German East Africa
DESCRIPTION:World War I is considered the first global war\, fought on multiple continents. In 1914 Germany embarked on a number of battles and guerrilla actions across the territory of German East Africa that would continue for the duration of the war. An often-forgotten campaign\, it was fought on limited resources with the aim of diverting troops and materials which would otherwise have been deployed in Europe. This was the only German theatre where the Germans were not beaten and were still fighting at the armistice on 11 November 1918. \nSpeaker – Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Rod Cooke\nRod has an extensive background in leadership and management in the Army\, business and the not-for-profit sector including several positions of CEO. Rod is active in the community and has significant not-for-profit and community experience in board and volunteer roles for over 30 years and is currently on eight boards including Sydney Community Services and Rural Futures. His military experience was gained in 16 years in the Regular Army graduating from the Royal Military College and serving in Armoured Corps\, with postings at 2 Cavalry Regiment\, ¾ Cavalry Regiment and the Armoured Centre. He transferred to the Army Reserve and served a further 21 years including postings at the 1st/15th Royal NSW Lancers\, at HQ 5 Bde\, HQ 2 DIV\, HQ Australian Theatre and HQ JOC. DESCRIPTION:The Second World War represents the greatest loss of life in an armed conflict that the world has ever seen. On the 80th anniversary of the war ending\, explore stories of the conflict from our collections.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nRepresentatives of Britain\, Russia\, France and the United States accepted the unconditional surrender of the German Armed Forces on 8 May 1945\, ending the war in Europe. The war in the Pacific did not formally end until nearly four months later\, when the Japanese instrument of surrender was signed on 2 September. \nFrom recruitment posters urging Australians to enlist and opposition to conscription by conscientious objectors\, to espionage and the evolving role of women’s work in the war effort\, this exhibition highlights stories from our collections relating to the Second World War. Other items reveal the postwar reconstruction of nations whose citizens’ lives had been irrevocably changed by the conflict.

Carrying the very plans the Germans executed in the field\, the majority were destroyed by the Germans in retreat\, then by their captors including Australia. \n  \nThis talk uniquely uses fully operational 1940’s cipher machines to show how the machines work\, and the process used to create encrypted messages. We also have a brief look at the influence of Enigma on the birth of computing\, and successive cryptography equipment. \n  \nSeeing working Enigma machines is a touchstone experience for anyone working in IT\, or interested in the history of intelligence. \n  \nSpeaker and Demonstrator – Mike Pritchard\, Australian Spy Museum  \nMike Pritchard is the founder of the Australian Spy Museum in Sydney. Mike worked in IT and cyber security for decades before late in career deciding to focus on bringing a passion project to life − creating a museum that explains espionage and the origins of modern cyber threats. SUMMARY:Unlearned Lessons of the American Civil War
DESCRIPTION:The American Civil War (1861-1865) is sometimes described as the last “old” war\, or the first “modern” war. \n \nIt was really a transition between the “old” way of fighting and modern industrial “total” war. It has been said that armies seldom learn from the mistakes of other armies but rather must learn from their own mistakes. Despite the Civil War being studied extensively by European armies they were destined to repeat many of the errors that had beset mid-19th Century North America. \nThe American Civil War provides a number of lessons in warfare\, many of them relevant even to this day. Tactics\, strategy\, logistics\, communication\, medical services\, propaganda\, and relationship between Heads of Government and Military Commanders. He has worked as a Research Scientist at the University of Queensland and at CSIRO\, and has also served as a Scientific Officer with the Australian Army Medical Corps − conducting both pre-clinical research as well as field trials of anti-malarial drugs in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. \nIn 1989 he joined the Australian biomedical products industry and has extensive clinical trials and research management experience gained over more than 20 years in various Industry positions − from small local consultancies to large multi-national Pharmaceutical Companies and several start-up and Biotechnology Companies\, with responsibility for clinical development plans. He has also worked as a Trainer in clinical trial conduct and Research Governance with the Academy of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and is an adjunct academic with the University of Queensland School of Biomedical Science and Queensland University of Technology School of Biomedical Science. \nHe has served with the Australian Army Medical Corps as a reservist for 25 years\, his most recent position being as a Staff Officer Grade II and I responsible for helping co-ordinate the evaluation and approval of Human Performance Research projects. He was jointly responsible for establishing a system of evaluation of the suitability of Defence research submissions. John’s pastimes include ballroom dancing\, public speaking and military history. He is an avid traveller and enjoys nothing more than visiting historical battlefields and studying old military campaigns − his particular areas of interest being the American Civil War and the ANZAC campaigns of the First and Second World War.

DESCRIPTION:2025 marks 80 years since the end of World War II in the Pacific—a defining moment in global history and in Brisbane’s legacy as a key Allied command centre. \nTo commemorate this milestone\, the Camp Columbia Heritage Association and the support over 20 national and international organisations\, will host a major international symposium and guided tour from 30–31 August. \n\nThis two-day hybrid symposium brings together scholars\, veterans’ groups\, heritage experts\, students\, and the general public to explore Brisbane’s wartime and post-war role as a vital Allied hub. Topics will range from military strategy\, diplomacy and logistics to civilian experiences\, migration\, and memory. \nConfirmed speakers will present on topics related to Australia\, the United States\, the Netherlands\, the UK\, and Netherlands East Indies. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage in discussions\, panel sessions\, and exhibitions. Representatives of Allied governments have also been invited. \nThe University of Queensland is a supporter of the Camp Columbia Heritage Association. They have conducted archeologic research at the site of the former camp. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 20 August 2025 7:00PM-8:00PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time) \n \n \nPhil explores two stories from the final year of the war that carry great Australia interest\, stories that highlight what he calls the ‘imperial muscle memory’ which makes British policy in the Pacific and SE Asia regions. \nFirst the decision to re-impose French control of Indochina\, and to use Japanese Prisoners Of War in that bloody process. Was it necessary ‘realpolitik’ or a flagrant breach of the principles for which the Allies were supposed to be fighting – first articulated in the Atlantic Charter? This little known story explains why Vietnam was set up for 30 more years of war\, war that would eventually involve Australia\, the USA and cause huge physical and human damage to Vietnam\, Cambodia and Laos. \nSecondly the famous Australia Special Forces Operation Semut in Borneo. Phil delves into the reasoning behind this controversial mission\, explains how it developed into a messy jungle war of head hunting and threatened court martial – with classic Anglo-Aussie rivalries making their presence felt as well – and also asks whether or not it sealed the fate of the Australian prisoners at Sandakan. \n \nThe Presenter: Phil Craig\nPhil Craig is a best-selling author and multiple award-winning film maker.\nA former RAF cadet pilot\, he studied at Cambridge University\, was a BBC graduate trainee and built his career working for the iconic British TV series World in Action and Panorama. Later he held senior positions at the prestigious Brook Lapping production company at the Discovery Channel and at ABC Television in Australia where he ran the entire factual output including its high-profile ANZAC centenary project. Throughout his TV and writing career\, Phil spent many years researching and reinterpreting the story of Britain and its Empire during the Second World War\, including his definitive and bestselling account – Finest Hour.\nHe hosts The Scandal Mongers Podcast. \n

Our latest exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance\, offering a nostalgic experience that\, for the first time\, delves into the forgotten designs for Victoria’s War Memorial. \n \nExplore the entries of the 1921 War Memorial design competition\, each a testament to the social and political tapestry of that time. From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken. DESCRIPTION:Uncovering Australia’s forgotten WWI role alongside Serbian forces\, By Far Kaymakchalan follows historian Bojan Pajić’s journey to reveal the stories of 1\,500 ANZAC volunteers. \n \nFilmed in Australia\, Serbia\, Greece and North Macedonia over a period of eighteen months\, By Far Kaymakchalan is based on historian Bojan Pajić’s discovery of one of the never told stories of Australia’s participation in World War One. Researching in Australian\, Serbian\, British and French archives\, Bojan discovered that over 1500 Australian and New Zealand volunteer doctors\, nurses\, ambulance drivers\, soldiers\, sailors and aircrew served alongside Serbian forces during the war\, even before the landings in Gallipoli supporting the Serbian resistance to Austro-Hungarian and German invasions. \n15m post-film Q&A with filmmakers.
