DESCRIPTION:In South Africa during the Second Boer War Australian Army lieutenants Harry “Breaker” Morant Peter Handcock and George Witten stand accused of the murders of six Boer prisoners and the assassination of a German missionary. British Commander-in-Chief Lord Kitchener is determined to see the men found guilty\, which he can then use as a bargaining chip in an impending peace conference with the Boers. Though they acted under orders\, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff. During his lifetime\, Harry “The Breaker” Morant became a popular hero through daring feats of horsemanship and for the bush ballards which he regularly contributed to The Bulletin and other papers. SUMMARY:With Horse & Morse – Australian signallers in Mesopotamia\, Persia & Kurdistan 1918-1919 - Exhibition - Last Days
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition highlights the images of soldier photographer E K Burke\, who served with the 1st Australian Signals Squadron in 1918-1919.Burke was both a signaller and a photographer\, and the exhibition shows images of not only the operations of the signals squadron from training through embarkation to the deserts and mountains of the then Mesopotamia\, Persia and Kurdistan\, but also images of everyday life and places in those regions through his ‘military tourist’ eye.\nThe British and Indian Army offensive to capture Baghdad in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) ended in ignominious defeat at the hands of the Turks in 1916.  But with fresh resolve new forces were assembled which captured Baghdad in March 1917\, supporting the Palestine campaign and keeping pressure on the Turkish armies as they retreated.  With the collapse of the Russian Armies in the region because of the Russian Revolution\, a new mixed Imperial and colonial unit initially called Dunsterforce\, attempted to support and train local militias in Persia (now Iran) to keep the pressure on the Turks and their German allies in the theatre. With the end of the war\, Allied forces remained in place and also moved into northern Kurdistan to keep the peace. Throughout the campaign in Mesopotamia\, Persia and Kurdistan\, an Anzac signals squadron and later an all Australian signal squadron supported the far flung operations in these regions\, providing signals intelligence as well as strategic and tactical communications as they trekked using horses\, mules and Ford motor vans. The last troop of the 1st Australian Signal Squadron did not return home until November 1919\, the last AIF unit to do so. \n \nDr Andrew Kilsby is an independent historian.  He has convened numerous military history conferences and curated exhibitions\, as well as written several military history books\, including The Forgotten Cruiser (with Greg Swinden) and The Riflemen. \nHe was curator for the exhibition With Horse & Morse in Mesopotamia & Kurdistan 1918-1919 at the Highway Gallery\, which highlighted the images of signaller-photographer E K Burke. \nContact Dr Andrew Kilsby on 0408 342 795 for further details. \nWednesday 17th August – Sunday 11th September 2016 between 12 noon and 4 pm. SUMMARY:New Directions in War and History: Debating military history
DESCRIPTION:The Strategic & Defence Studies Centre (ANU) and the Australian Centre for the Study of Armed Conflict and Society (UNSW Canberra) are pleased to announce an international conference that explores the future of military history\, to be held at the Australian National University 4 – 5 February 2016.The conference aims to explore the unique position occupied by military history between the public\, scholarly and professional arenas. Historians of all fields have long mined the wealth of sources that war generates\, and the history of war remains popular at an undergraduate level. In Australia the centenary of the First World War has generated substantial public interest\, while the Anzac myth is central to national commemoration of war and a signifier of national identity. Yet\, military history arguably remains on the margin of the historical discipline in Australia\, following an international trend in which the field has been considered to be traditional and conservative. \nThis conference aims to re-consider military and naval history as a genre of history\, while also providing a forum for discussing new and innovative approaches in the field. In doing so\, paper proposals that explore the limits of military history\, its controversies and omissions\, its utility and successes are encouraged. The conference theme\, ‘New directions in war and history’\, is deliberately broad so as to generate a discussion between Australian and international scholars who examine conflict through a range of cultural\, social\, economic and political history lenses and those scholars situated within the more traditional military history but who are exploring it in innovative ways. \nThe Conference Dinner will be held on Thursday 4 February at $70 per person. DESCRIPTION:1966 was the year that Australia sent a Task Force to Vietnam\, the year the first National Servicemen served in the war\, and the year of the battle of Long Tan. Australia felt the heat of the Cold War and the throes of a youth revolution\, in the year the first baby boomers came of age. Fifty years on\, this exhibition tells the story of a year that changed the Australia and the world.\nThis exhibition\, at the Shrine of Remembrance Melbourne\, will run from 4 April 2016 until 31 March 2017. There is no entrance fee to visit this Exhibition\, which will also be exhibiting items on loan from Vietnam Veterans who were in Vietnam at that time. Opening hours 10am – 5pm daily. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day.

SUMMARY:The war on our doorstep  Australians in New Guinea 1943-45 -  Last days
DESCRIPTION:Australian success in Papua between July 1942 and January 1943 checked the Japanese southward advance but the victories at Kokoda\, Milne Bay and the Beachheads did not remove the Japanese presence in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea to Papua’s north. From early 1943\, Australian troops embarked upon a series of campaigns in the Mandate–at Wau (29 January – 6 February 1943)\, Salamaua–Lae (April–September 1943)\, Finisterre Range (September 1943 – April 1944) and Huon Peninsula (September 1943 – March 1944) which eradicated the enemy threat from mainland New Guinea once and for all. These campaigns\, the subject of this exhibition\, were the largest series of interconnected operations ever undertaken by the Australian military and proved every bit as gruelling and hard fought as the earlier\, more celebrated campaigns in Papua. The latter New Guinea campaigns saw Australia’s troops hone the skills and demonstrate the prowess which\, by war’s end\, had made them the world’s finest jungle fighters.\nThis temporary exhibition is located in the the Galleries of Remembrance\, a $45 million Victorian Government redevelopment that utilises 1\,600 square metres of undercroft space that exists beneath the Shrine of Remembrance. Over 800 objects are included in permanent and temporary exhibition spaces which illustrate the experiences of Australians at war and in peacekeeping operations\, from Pre-Federation to the present day\, with a particular focus on individual and unit stories of Victorian service and sacrifice. \nLast admission to the Galleries of Remembrance is 4.30pm.

SUMMARY:Trees to Remember Them By: WWI Avenues of Honour in the Chisholm Electorate.
DESCRIPTION:In this photographic exhibition of remembrance at the Monash Federation Centre (produced by MHHV member Dr Andrew Kilsby/Cooee History & Heritage)\, World War One Avenues of  Honour in the modern Electorate of Chisholm (partly in the former Shire of Mulgrave) are considered.Three were established before the end of World War One and one after the war. The exhibition will include original images\, soldier’s stories drawn from the avenues\, images of the avenues today and exhibit original name plaques as well as provide opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the service of World War One soldiers.
