SUMMARY:Trees to Remember Them By: WWI Avenues of Honour in the Chisholm Electorate.
DESCRIPTION:In this photographic exhibition of remembrance at the Monash Federation Centre (produced by MHHV member Dr Andrew Kilsby/Cooee History & Heritage)\, World War One Avenues of  Honour in the modern Electorate of Chisholm (partly in the former Shire of Mulgrave) are considered.Three were established before the end of World War One and one after the war. The exhibition will include original images\, soldier’s stories drawn from the avenues\, images of the avenues today and exhibit original name plaques as well as provide opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the service of World War One soldiers. SUMMARY:The war on our doorstep  Australians in New Guinea 1943-45
DESCRIPTION:Australian success in Papua between July 1942 and January 1943 checked the Japanese southward advance but the victories at Kokoda\, Milne Bay and the Beachheads did not remove the Japanese presence in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea to Papua’s north. From early 1943\, Australian troops embarked upon a series of campaigns in the Mandate–at Wau (29 January – 6 February 1943)\, Salamaua–Lae (April–September 1943)\, Finisterre Range (September 1943 – April 1944) and Huon Peninsula (September 1943 – March 1944) which eradicated the enemy threat from mainland New Guinea once and for all. These campaigns\, the subject of this exhibition\, were the largest series of interconnected operations ever undertaken by the Australian military and proved every bit as gruelling and hard fought as the earlier\, more celebrated campaigns in Papua. The latter New Guinea campaigns saw Australia’s troops hone the skills and demonstrate the prowess which\, by war’s end\, had made them the world’s finest jungle fighters.\nThis temporary exhibition is located in the the Galleries of Remembrance\, a $45 million Victorian Government redevelopment that utilises 1\,600 square metres of undercroft space that exists beneath the Shrine of Remembrance. Over 800 objects are included in permanent and temporary exhibition spaces which illustrate the experiences of Australians at war and in peacekeeping operations\, from Pre-Federation to the present day\, with a particular focus on individual and unit stories of Victorian service and sacrifice. \nLast admission to the Galleries of Remembrance is 4.30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Girls’ fiction published in England\, the United States\, Canada and Australia during and immediately after World War I reflects a patriotic fervour that extols imperialist greatness and international allegiances alongside a strong national pride\, where girls are encouraged to understand and to accept their responsibilities to family\, community\, and nation in their support of the war effort. Yet girls are occasionally depicted having adventures of their own\, whether they model the courage and patience required to keep the home fires burning or the bravery associated with active participation on the Front.\nThis lecture is presented in association with the exhibition Reading Adventures\, Noel Shaw Gallery\, Baillieu Library\, University of Melbourne.

SUMMARY:Story Telling and Victorian Collections
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Collections is a free\, online cataloguing system especially created for small museums in Victoria. This workshop offers a full day of training\, beginning with basic collection management. By the end of the day each participant will have photographed and catalogued an item from their organisation’s collection using the Victorian Collections system.\nEach organisation should aim to send at least 2 or 3 people to the training. This will spread the load of cataloguing\, distribute the experience and make cataloguing an easier and more pleasant experience. Please bring a collection item for each person attending the training. \nThe afternoon:\nThe Culture Victoria website celebrates the richness and diversity of Victoria through our collections. The core of Culture Victoria is our stories Рthemed narratives featuring items from collections that articulate the meaning and context of\, and between\, collections (and organisations). \nThis workshop will provide a brief introduction to Culture Victoria\, and how we use stories and storytelling to explore the people\, places and events that have shaped Victoria. \nWe will then have a facilitated session with Malcolm McKinnon\, a renowned social history documentary & multi-media maker who has created numerous stories for Culture Victoria over the years. \nMalcolm will explore how to identify and tell the key stories in your collection. He will look at what works in the online space\, and give some simple examples of how to create online stories which are achievable for community collecting organisations.

SUMMARY:Tramway Anzacs: Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Hawthorn Tram Depot are proud to announce ‘Tramway Anzacs’\, an exhibition at the Melbourne Tram Museum @ Hawthorn Depot\, honouring the 538 employees of Melbourne tramways who volunteered for active service in the First World War.\nConceived to commemorate the centenary of the landing at Anzac Cove\, the exhibition is focused on the impact of the First World War on Australian society\, and on the lives of the tramway men who served – the 86 who died on active service\, and all those who returned. \nThe official opening ceremony for Tramway Anzacs will be at 3pm on Saturday 11 April 2015. \nThe exhibition will be mounted in the main museum gallery\, and consists of multimedia displays\, posters and contemporary artefacts related to Australian participation in the First World War. \nTo mark this special event\, the Melbourne Tram Museum will be open every Saturday from the launch on 11 April 2015 until 23 May 2015. \nThe exhibition will be on display until 12 December 2015\, our last open day for the year\, and the centenary of the decision to evacuate all Allied troops from the Gallipoli Peninsula.

DESCRIPTION:One hundred years ago Australia suffered its first casualties of World War 1. Not on a remote Turkish peninsula\, but much closer to home in what was then called German New Guinea.\nAustralia‚Äôs naval commanders were deeply worried by German cruisers north of Australia\, but the capture of German wireless telegraph stations remained a priority for the British Admiralty. Australia responded\, recruiting 500 naval reservists and 1000 volunteer infantry to form the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF). \nAt dawn on 11 September 1914\, small parties of naval reservists landed at Rabaul\, New Britain to seize one of the stations. It was Australia‚Äôs first land operation of World War I. Two men were killed during the action‚Äî the first Australian casualties of what became a very long and bloody war. \nThis exhibit explores the role of South Australia’s former Colonial Naval Ship Protector in this first phase of World War 1. Protector escorted the submarines AE1 and AE2 to Rabaul and guarded the harbour. It captured a German steamship Madang and a contingent of Germans on land.  Objects on display include German possessions souvenired by Australians at Rabaul and the diary of Protector’s wireless operator recording the dramatic sequence of events and the mysterious loss of AE1. A cutting edge installation developed with the Centre for Visual Technologies (University of Adelaide) uses historic photographs to create interactive 3D models of the ship. \nProtector at Rabaul is the first phase of a major exhibition to be installed in 2015 exploring the ship’s role in World War1 and the experience of South Australians in the naval theatre of war.  We would love to hear from any South Australians with ancestors who served on Protector or were involved with Navy during this time.

DESCRIPTION:Royal United Service Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address Thursday 10th September 12.30 pm:\nDefence Plaza Melbourne\, 661 Bourke St\, Melbourne\, 3000\nThe August Offensive at Gallipoli: an Ottoman Perspective \nHere is a rare opportunity to hear from an internationally renowned scholar about arguably the most important battle of the Gallipoli campaign from a Turkish perspective.\nProfessor Mesut Uyar graduated from the Turkish Military Academy in 1991\, later completing an MA in politics and a PhD in international relations at Istanbul University. During his military career he served as a platoon leader and company and battalion commander in various infantry units\, completing several tours as a United Nations military observer in Georgia and as a staff officer in Afghanistan. He was appointed assistant professor of international relations at the Turkish Military Academy where he served for ten years. He was also curator of the Military Academy Archive and Museum Division for five years\, during which time he began his research on Ottoman military history.
