DESCRIPTION:Royal United Service Institute of Victoria Lunchtime Address Thursday 10th September 12.30 pm:\nDefence Plaza Melbourne\, 661 Bourke St\, Melbourne\, 3000\nThe August Offensive at Gallipoli: an Ottoman Perspective \nHere is a rare opportunity to hear from an internationally renowned scholar about arguably the most important battle of the Gallipoli campaign from a Turkish perspective.\nProfessor Mesut Uyar graduated from the Turkish Military Academy in 1991\, later completing an MA in politics and a PhD in international relations at Istanbul University. During his military career he served as a platoon leader and company and battalion commander in various infantry units\, completing several tours as a United Nations military observer in Georgia and as a staff officer in Afghanistan. He was appointed assistant professor of international relations at the Turkish Military Academy where he served for ten years. He was also curator of the Military Academy Archive and Museum Division for five years\, during which time he began his research on Ottoman military history. DESCRIPTION:Here is a rare opportunity to hear from an internationally renowned scholar about arguably the most important battle of the Gallipoli campaign from the Ottoman perspective.\n \nThe Ottoman Defence against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 places us one step closer towards better understanding the events of this fateful day. The landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 represents a significant moment\, not only for Australia and New Zealand\, but also for Turkey. Yet\, despite a plethora of accounts of the landing from the allied perspective\, a detailed account from the Turkish perspective had not been published in English until now. \n \nThe Ottoman Defence begins to address this imbalance in recording and understanding historical events. The challenge to clarify the fog and confusion of war has led the author to focus exclusively on that key first day of what would become an 8-month-long battle. \nUsing Ottoman military documents\, regimental war diaries\, personal accounts and memoirs\, Uyar describes the unfolding campaign\, unravelling its complexity and resolving many of the questions that have dogged allied accounts for a century. \nSignificantly\, Uyar resolves the enduring controversy about the presence of Ottoman machine guns. He confirms that while machine gun positions had been prepared on Ariburnu\, on 400 Plateau\, and near the Fisherman’s Hut\, the initial pre-dawn landing was not opposed by machine guns\, which had been kept in reserve. The first four machine guns arrived at Scrubby Knoll on Third Ridge around 0740 hours\, and four more arrived at Chunuk Bair around 1000 hours. Four more arrived around 1530 hours. \nThe Ottoman Defence enhances our understanding of the Ottoman military forces of the time and why they proved so successful in containing and ultimately defeating the Allied invasion. It helps to provide a more balanced and complete understanding of the chaotic events of that day and as such is both interesting and valuable to students of military history. \nMesut Uyar

DESCRIPTION:The Australian Intercultural Society (AIS) and Deakin University would like you and your friends/colleagues to attend a presentation on “Gallipoli 1915 РRemembering 1915 Offensive : Questions and Commemoration”.\nRegistration is required: http://anzac2015.eventbrite.com.au. There are parking options available. \nTo commemorate the ANZAC Centenary\, AIS and Deakin University are hosting a lecture and photography exhibition to reflect on the Gallipoli campaign. The presentation will provide historical accounts from the Turkish perspective by sharing stories\, commemorating the sacrifice of the soldiers trying to defend their homeland and analyse how the campaign was pivotal in the formation of a new republic. \nWe aim to increase understanding with a lecture from Associate Professor Mesut Uyar (Visiting Fellow\, UNSW Canberra). Associate Professor Uyar is an internationally respected Turkish military historian who has held positions such as platoon leader\, company and battalion commander in various Turkish infantry units before embarking on an academic career. Karen Percy from the ABC will be moderating the session. \nThe presentation will be accompanied by photo exhibition curated from Turkish sources. Through the presentation\, the speaker will help the audience ‘look into’ and ‘look beyond’ the photos\, to instil a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by soldiers from the ‘other’ side and helps students gain a broader understanding of the historical campaign. SUMMARY:Trees to Remember Them By: WWI Avenues of Honour in the Chisholm Electorate.
DESCRIPTION:In this photographic exhibition of remembrance at the Monash Federation Centre (produced by MHHV member Dr Andrew Kilsby/Cooee History & Heritage)\, World War One Avenues of  Honour in the modern Electorate of Chisholm (partly in the former Shire of Mulgrave) are considered.Three were established before the end of World War One and one after the war. The exhibition will include original images\, soldier’s stories drawn from the avenues\, images of the avenues today and exhibit original name plaques as well as provide opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the service of World War One soldiers. SUMMARY:31st State RSL Annual Remembrance Service
DESCRIPTION:The 31st State RSL Annual Remembrance Service will be conducted at the Springvale War Cemetery\, situated within the grounds of the Springvale Botanical Cemetery on Sunday 8th November 2015\, commencing at 2.30pm.\nWe would like to see this Service once again be one of our very special commemorative occasions.¬† This year marks the 97th year of the signing of the Armistice that ended ended World War I.¬† The Service commemorates those of our relatives and friends who paid the supreme sacrifice. \nThis year‚Äôs speaker will be Major General Dave Chalmers\, AO\, CSC (Ret)\, the First Assistant Secretary\, Commemorations and War Graves with the Department of Veterans‚Äô Affairs.¬† Last year\, Major General Chalmers was the Emcee for the Centenary Service held at Albany\, WA\, to mark the Centenary of the departure of our first convoy of troops to the Middle East and Europe and\, additionally\, he more recently acted as the Emcee for the Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Service held at Villers Bretonneux in France. \n  \nWIN Television Victoria regional news presenter\, Bruce Roberts\, will be the Service Emcee. \nThe use of hired coaches direct to the cemetery and return is recommended.¬† This option is even more attractive and viable should arrangements be made to allow the pick-up of other Sub-Branch and service group members at designated pick-up points along the route to Springvale.¬† For those travelling longer distances\, perhaps lunch somewhere along the route could be incorporated into the trip. \nTo make the use of coaches more convenient\, Sub-Branches might consider it more economical and appropriate to offer seats to those who are not normally associated with RSL or Unit Association activities.¬† Perhaps a call to the local press could assist in this way.¬† Many people throughout the State have relatives interred in the cemetery\, whilst many more have the names of relatives commemorated on name plaques in the adjacent garden of remembrance. \nOnly one tribute will be laid at the Cross of Sacrifice by the Returned Services League of Australia and that will be laid by the State President.¬† This means that Sub-Branches are not obliged to lay a tribute at the Service although they are encouraged to do so.¬† Those Sub-Branches that do may consider gifting a book on Australian military history book to a school identified by the Sub-Branch.¬† Provision will be made for the laying of Sub-Branch\, Women‚Äôs Auxiliary and personal tributes immediately following the laying of official wreaths. \nOnly the names of official wreath-bearers and Unit Associations will be announced as their tributes are conveyed to the Cross of Sacrifice.¬†  \n  \nPlease note that no announcements are made for Sub-Branch\, Women‚Äôs Auxiliary and personal tributes.¬† This has worked well in in the past and maintains a smooth flow during this most important part of the Service\, while keeping the Service from becoming too lengthy as well as maintaining dignity and respect. \nUnder cover seating will be provided\, however\, those desirous of bringing their own seats are well advised to do so. \nMedals and decorations should be worn. \nA plan showing the location of the cemetery (which is in the grounds of the Springvale Botanical Cemetery) is printed on the reverse of this Circular. \nParking is permitted on any cemetery road other than the Southern end of Second Road and Sixth Avenue along the Southern end of the cemetery. \nPLEASE RESERVE SUNDAY 8th NOVEMBER 2014 IN YOUR DIARY NOW.

DESCRIPTION:Compulsory military training for young men began not long after Federation in Australia and various systems operated on and off throughout much of the twentieth century.\nAlthough such schemes were usually politically popular\, people were always divided on the issue of conscripts fighting in wars outside Australia‚Äôs shores. \nThis was especially true between 1965 and 1972\, when the National Service Scheme operated during the Vietnam War\, a conflict that became increasingly unpopular. \nAlmost sixty five thousand young Australians did National Service\, just over fifteen thousand serving in Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:Footscray-Yarraville City Band is proud to present a concert to commemorate the ANZAC spirit in the centenary yearof the landing and ANZAC campaign at Gallipoli.\nThe concert will honour the courage and sacrifice of those lost in all conflicts and explores the emotion and despair at the futility of war and the human desire for lasting world peace. \nThe concert features internationally renowned performers along with the Footscray-Yarraville City Band in a production spanning repertoire from the period through to contemporary pieces to present the spirit of our Nation through music and performance. \nWe are pleased to present at the concert the world premiere of a specially commissioned major work titled ‘The Silent ANZAC’ composed by Todd Smith. \nTodd was chosen based on his fast growing international reputation as a composer of significant talent. \nHe was the first recipient of the Lady Adrienne Stewart bursary for composition and since has written two major works for the Brighouse and Rastrick band of England. \nTodd is based in New Zealand and we are thrilled to continue the ANZAC spirit in collaborating on this major work. \nAt just 20 years of age\, Todd is an exciting talent and we look forward to many future works from him. \nThe musical work ‘The Silent ANZAC’ is inspired by often overlooked story of the Australian submarine\, the HMAS AE2\, captained by Lieutenant-Commander Henry Stoker and his 32 man crew\, whose mission was to penetrate the heavily mined Dardanelles Straights into the Sea of Marmara to disrupt enemy shelling of the Gallipoli shore to allow the ANZAC troop landings and to interrupt the flow of enemy reinforcements by ship.\nThe efforts of the AE2 was one of the few strategic successes of the ANZAC Day landing at Gallipoli. \nFive days later\, in the Sea of Marmara the AE2 was sunk and Stoker and the crew of the AE2 Stoker and his crew began three and a half years of captivity in Turkish prisoner- of-war camps. \nFootscray-Yarraville City Band are grateful for the support and funding from the Australian Government’s ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program to present this concert and specially commissioned work. \nFREE ADMISSION • Bookings essential through www.trybooking.com/158554

SUMMARY:The Fighter: Paul Warren
DESCRIPTION:One month after he arrived in Afghanistan as a soldier in the ADF\, an IED exploded\, tearing off his right leg. The same explosion instantly killed his mate\, Private Ben Ranaudo.\n \nPrivate Paul Warren’s life was saved by the quick work of his battalion\, who got him a helicopter within 16 minutes for surgery. \nPaul was flown to Germany and then back to Australia\, where he received treatment for his injuries in Brisbane. Although he had only known his partner\, Dearne\, for four months before his deployment\, she moved to Brisbane to assist his recovery. \nThere were many dark times as Paul struggled with the shattering effects of PTSD\, and guilt and grief over the death of his mate Benny. At his lowest ebb\, Paul thought about taking his own life\, as so many other soldiers in similar circumstances continue to do. \nRecovery was a slow and at times desperately painful process\, but the discipline and toughness he’d learned from his martial arts background and the fierce love of Dearne helped him mend. \nPaul‚Äôs book covers his journey with PTSD and a return home to a new life\, and how he‚Äôs rebuilt his life\, and health ‚Äì and even got back to phenomenal fitness levels and participated in the 2014 Invictus Games in London. His story is one of courage\, determination and love that will move all who read it. \nPaul now works for Mates4Mates in Townsville\, an organisation dedicated to helping injured soldiers. DESCRIPTION:Through historical photographs and personal stories\, this exhibition presents the chronology of the First World War (1914-19) and provides the opportunity to discover the fascinating stories with particular reference to the contribution of Victorians.\nFind out about the hardships that our men endured and the battles that they fought alongside Allied nations – from the landings at Gallipoli to the battles in Palestine\, Passchendaele and Fromelles. \nAway from the frontline\, discover the experiences of the people in Victoria\, their contribution to the war effort and growing social divisions which climaxed in the bitterly contested\, and unsuccessful\, conscription referenda in 1916 and 1917.
