SUMMARY:Trees to Remember Them By: WWI Avenues of Honour in the Chisholm Electorate.
DESCRIPTION:In this photographic exhibition of remembrance at the Monash Federation Centre (produced by MHHV member Dr Andrew Kilsby/Cooee History & Heritage)\, World War One Avenues of  Honour in the modern Electorate of Chisholm (partly in the former Shire of Mulgrave) are considered.Three were established before the end of World War One and one after the war. The exhibition will include original images\, soldier’s stories drawn from the avenues\, images of the avenues today and exhibit original name plaques as well as provide opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the service of World War One soldiers. SUMMARY:A wasted Effort? - The RAAF and the Battle for Tarakan 1945
DESCRIPTION:A wasted Effort? РThe RAAF and the Battle for Tarakan 1945 by Mr Tony Hastings. \n \nThe last series of Allied amphibious operations of the Pacific War began on 1 May 1945 when the 26th Brigade Group of the 9th Australian Division landed on Tarakan Island\, off the north-east coast of Borneo. Over the following weeks the Brigade engaged in vicious fighting against a well dug-in Japanese garrison resulting in heavy Australian casualties\, including 225 killed. But the main objective of the campaign\, Tarakan airfield\, was so badly cratered and waterlogged that the RAAF was unable to develop it into the planned forward air base that was needed to support the following Borneo landings at Brunei Bay and Balikpapan. The Australian Army and RAAF official histories have therefore described the Tarakan campaign as a failure. \nRAAF Kittyhawks on Tarakan 28 June\, 1945\nIs this view completely justified? Why was Tarakan airfield such an important objective? What went wrong? Did the RAAF achieve anything worthwhile? \nTony is completing his PhD in military history with the University of NSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy. \nHis presentation will examine the often criticised efforts of the RAAF during the invasion of the island of Tarakan\, located off the coast of Borneo\, and place the campaign the wider context of the RAAF’s role in Pacific War in 1945 \nРWednesday 4th November between 6.30 Р8.00 pm.

SUMMARY:Trees to Remember Them By: WWI Avenues of Honour in the Chisholm Electorate.
DESCRIPTION:In this photographic exhibition of remembrance at the Monash Federation Centre (produced by MHHV member Dr Andrew Kilsby/Cooee History & Heritage)\, World War One Avenues of  Honour in the modern Electorate of Chisholm (partly in the former Shire of Mulgrave) are considered.Three were established before the end of World War One and one after the war. The exhibition will include original images\, soldier’s stories drawn from the avenues\, images of the avenues today and exhibit original name plaques as well as provide opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the service of World War One soldiers. DESCRIPTION:Jim Bridges is the man behind the Australian Cartoon Museum. For the last 33 years\, he has been collecting cartoons in all their many shapes and sizes.\n He has over 5\,000\,000 cartoons in his collection. Our Social and Political History is intrinsically bound up in these sketches\, which are also time capsules of our era. \nThe National Vietnam Veterans Museum is hosting an exhibition of cartoons of the Vietnam War era\, depicting the historical and social issues of that period in Australia’s history. \nThis exhibition concentrates mostly on the soldiers’ point of view and the coping mechanism of humour\, including cartoons by Geoff Hook and William Ellis Green (WEG). \nJim will be at the Museum to launch this thought provoking Exhibition at 2pm Tuesday 1 September.
