SUMMARY:Gallipoli: Who Do You Think You Are?
DESCRIPTION:As another Anzac Day approaches\, the story of the Gallipoli landing and the eight-month-long campaign that followed will be retold. Most accounts will dwell on stories of reckless courage\, endurance\, humour in adversity and\, above all\, mateship. Those qualities\, which together make up what we call “the Anzac spirit”\, we believe define our nation. Little wonder that the fascination with Gallipoli has never faded\, despite the passing of 99 years.\nYet how well do we Australians actually know the history of Gallipoli that has become a central part of our national foundation story? The Gallipoli story\, especially as it is widely understood\, is riddled with paradoxes and misconceptions. Gallipoli was a powerful generator of myths\, and over time\, the campaign and its supposed promise of victory have become exaggerated and romanticized. The clouding of myth and romance has obscured the events\, distorted historical perspectives\, and hampered impartial analysis. In this talk\, Ashley Ekins will bring fresh findings and some revealing answers to these important issues. \nPresenter: Ashley Ekins \nDate: Tuesday 8 April\, 12.30pm start \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome

We uncover his dramatic story from his origins in England where he claimed to be the offspring of a titled admiral\, through to exile in Australia where he established The Breaker legend as a hard-living larrikin bushman\, to his work as a famed poet alongside Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson and finally as an Australian soldier serving in the Boer War. \nFeaturing actor Benedict Wall as Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant and using dramatic re-enactments shot on location in Australia and South Africa\, Breaker Morant The Retrial\, finally uncovers what really happened over a century ago in South Africa. Morant\, along with fellow Australian soldier Peter Handcock\, was tried and executed by the British Imperial Army in 1902 for shooting Boer prisoners. But the discovery of compelling new evidence by Australian military lawyer Jim Unkles\, challenges the long held British claim that they received a fair trial\, revealing fatal errors in the legal process. fully dramatised scenes illustrate the complex story. Expert opinion from historians and legal practitioners are presented with evidence revealed for the first time. It is a journey of intrigue and mystery as narrator Neil Pigot seeks the real Breaker Morant and discovers why he came to be a scapegoat for the British Army’s scorched earth practices in the South Africa War. \nTo purchase DVD contact \nhttp://www.umbrellaent.com.au/p-3870-breaker-morant-theretrial.aspx?keyword=breaker+morant \nBOOK NOW \nwww.cinemanova.com.au/catalogue/coming_soon/36133
