SUMMARY:Victorian State Remembrance Day Service
DESCRIPTION:Each year on 11 November at 11am—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month—we pause for one minute’s silence to honour all who have served\, suffered\, or died in wars\, conflicts\, and peacekeeping operations. \nOn this day in 1918\, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of devastating warfare. The Armistice signed by Germany marked the end of the First World War and gave birth to this day of remembrance. \nJoin us on the forecourt for the Victorian State Remembrance Day Service.\nNo bookings are required. Limited seating will be available. \nThe service will be live-streamed and available to watch below\, or our Facebook and YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Melbourne - The Digger's Diary A soldier's diary. A decades-long search. A life brought back from history. By Colin Reid
DESCRIPTION:When museum curator Colin Reid is handed a bullet-pierced diary for a Great War exhibition\, it sets him on a decades-long quest to discover the fate of its owner\, Corporal Claude Nuttall MM. \nThis remarkable true story recounts that journey: from the heartland of England to the battlefields of France\, and on to Nuttall’s homeland of Australia. It chronicles the piecing together of a forgotten life — a tale of love\, faith\, and unimaginable bravery — and the improbable series of chance events that brought together two families\, separated for a century by war. \nThe Digger’s Diary is a testament to the value of the cherished items in our lives. Items that have little intrinsic value but are utterly priceless. In the case of the Digger’s diary\, a relic that would elevate its owner from total obscurity to veneration by the people of the nation he fought to liberate. \nWhat reviewers have said: \n‘Truly powerful. Crafted by a gifted\, investigative researcher and wordsmith.’ \n‘I loved this. Warm\, personal\, and deeply engaging — a story that resonates across generations.’‍ \nThursday 12th November (7.00pm): Shrine of Remembrance\, Melbourne. \nClick here to order your copy

SUMMARY:85 Years On – Remembering the Siege of Tobruk - One Day Conference
DESCRIPTION:‘The troops at Tobruk are caught like rats in a trap\, would live like rats and die like rats.’ (Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw 1941) \n \n  \n \n \nTo the thousands of Allied soldiers trapped in the Libyan coastal city of Tobruk in early 1941\, this derogatory broadcast stirred a feeling of defiance deep within them\, and soon the Australians christened themselves ‘The Rats of Tobruk.’ \nFor 242 days from 10 April to 7 December 1941\, these Allied forces successfully held a vital deep-water port against the German and Italian armies\, thereby preventing a Nazi advance toward Egypt and the Suez Canal. The backbone of the defence was the 9th Australian Division and the 18th Brigade\, as well as units from Great Britain\, India\, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Ships from the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy co-operated with aircraft from the RAF and RAAF\, to keep supply routes and air defences open. Meanwhile\, the Allied land forces faced concerted attacks from the German Afrika Corps and from Axis air and naval forces. \n2026 marks the 85th Anniversary of the Siege and with no surviving participants still alive\, a new generation is taking the opportunity to re-examine the Siege at a One-Day Conference jointly sponsored by Military History and Heritage Victoria (MHHV) and the Rats of Tobruk Association. High profile speakers and subject experts will review key aspects of the Siege\, and in a panel discussion seek to answer the key question of why the seemingly superior Axis forces were unsuccessful in recapturing Tobruk. \nThe Conference is to be staged on Saturday 14 November at the Headquarters of the Rats of Tobruk Association in Melbourne. In addition to many relics and artefacts of the Siege on show in the Hall\, the venue is complemented by a Special Display created to mark the 85th Anniversary. \nThe conference will include presentations from Dr Robert Lyman MBE FRHS\, David Mitchellhill-Green\, MAJ-GEN Jeffrey Rosenfeld AC OBE\, Mike Rosel\, CAPT Andrew Mackinnon CSC RAN\, Adam Lunney and Dr Daryl Moran along with Rats of Tobruk Descendant Guides and MAJ-GEN Jim Barry AM MBE RFD ED (Rtd) \n85 Years On – Remembering the Siege of Tobruk is the 18th One Day Conference staged by MHHV since 2010 and is one not to be missed. \n  \nMembers of the RATS OF TOBRUK ASSOCIATION should register for the conference directly with the Rats of Tobruk Association Melbourne. \nTickets \n  \nDownload the Full Program Here\nAll in person conference tickets include a Free Parking Pass\, Lunch\, Morning and Afternoon tea. \n(Parking permit will be emailed to ticket holders 11November 2026) \nMHHV Members – $75.00 \nNON MEMBERS – $100.00 \nConcession Card holders – $75.00 \nOnline Full Day via zoom – $50.00 (Conference live link will be emailed 13th November) \nMembers of the RATS OF TOBRUK ASSOCIATION should register for the conference directly with the Rats of Tobruk Association Melbourne. \n  \nConference Sponsors: \n \n  \n

She’d research a wider cohort of Australian and New Zealand POWs in Italy to discover a complex shared history between the POWs and the Italians they encountered during 1942 to 1945\, and the resonances of their war into the postwar decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the author\nKatrina Kittel is a historian and librarian who completed a B.Arts (History)\, B. Science and a Master of Leadership and Management in Education at The University of Newcastle\, as well as a graduate diploma in library and information science at Charles Sturt University. For 30 years she worked at The University of Newcastle\, including as a student advisor\, research assistant and librarian. \nKatrina has written for journals and other publications since 2013\, including co-authoring an article for War & Society. She has been researching the stories of Australian and New Zealand POWs in Italy for 13 years\, and currently works in public libraries in the lower Hunter region of NSW. \nParking and access\nFree visitor parking is available in the P1 carpark.& \nTaxi\, rideshare\, or private drop offs are located in the underground P1 Visitor Carpark with access via Fairbairn Avenue. \nAccessibility\nWheelchair and Carers seating \nThere is reserved wheelchair accessible seating available in Seats 1\, 2\, 3\, 21\, 22 of Row L with carers seats adjacent. \n  \nThis Author Talk series presents a range of perspectives. SUMMARY:Spartans & ANZACs - 480 BC · 1941 - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Australia had its own Thermopylae. We’ve just forgotten it. \n15 April 2026 – April 2027\nIn 480 BC\, one of history’s most famous battles was fought in central Greece at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae. For three days\, a few thousand Greeks—led by 300 Spartan warriors and their king\, Leonidas I—held back a vast Persian army. Eventually encircled\, the Spartans and their allies were killed. Their stand\, however\, allowed thousands of comrades to escape and fight on\, leaving an enduring example of courage and sacrifice. \nIn April 1941\, on the eve of Anzac Day\, Australian and New Zealand troops returned to this same ground. Outnumbered and under relentless pressure from advancing German forces\, ANZAC units used the rugged terrain of Thermopylae and nearby Brallos Pass to delay the enemy\, enabling thousands of Allied soldiers to withdraw to safety. \nSPARTANS & ANZACS draws a powerful connection between these two defining moments. It reveals how service\, sacrifice and mateship transcend time\, linking ancient warriors with modern soldiers in a shared legacy of courage. \nThis exhibition invites reflection on the enduring values forged in conflict—and how these stories continue to shape the meaning of remembrance today. \nGalleries of Remembrance\nFree entry \nThis exhibition was supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.

SUMMARY:The Greater Second World War and Modern Global Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, the world marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, but for millions across the Asia-Pacific\, Allied victory in 1945 did not bring peace. Numerous wars ravaged the region in the years that followed\, decolonisation created dozens of new states\, and millions of people died\, migrated\, or were otherwise displaced by conflict. The longer-term effects of the conflict have shaped\, and continue to influence\, the development of nations\, their relationships\, and the societal\, environmental\, and geopolitical challenges the region faces today. In this context\, there has been much renewed discussion about reconciliation (or the lack thereof)\, reconstruction\, and the preciousness of long-term peace\, both in the Asia-Pacific and globally. \nIn recognising the continued influence of the Second World War on the Asia-Pacific today\, the War Studies Research Group (UNSW Canberra) and the Second World War Research Group (King’s College London) will be hosting an international conference that addresses the aftermath of the war\, and its longer-term impacts on the region. The conference seeks to act as a nexus through which to bring together researchers from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond\, to bridge international and scholarly boundaries\, and foster connections beyond the conference. \n

SUMMARY:The Burning Blue - with Mike Carlton
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the twentieth century\, the pilots of the Royal Australian Navy carved their name with pride to build a service that would take shape as the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. \n \nAustralian naval aviators stood tall in the gallant ranks of the fighter Aces of World War 1. They fought\, and some of them died\, above the bloody trenches of France and Flanders\, where – alone in the freezing\, open cockpits of aircraft made from wood\, wire and canvas – they duelled with the likes of Germany’s legendary Red Baron. \nThe next generation flew in the grey gloom of the North Sea and the icy Arctic against Hitler’s battleships\, and in the sunny blue skies or the dust storms of the Mediterranean to meet the Luftwaffe and Mussolini’s air force. \nIn Korea – the so-called ‘forgotten war’ – they launched with bombs and rockets from the snowy and ice-encrusted flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney. \nVietnam\, the first helicopter war\, was a theatre of sometimes tempestuous tropical skies\, of rain forests\, rice paddies and the perils of a ‘hot’ landing zone under fire in some jungle clearing. \nThroughout the twentieth century\, the pilots of the Royal Australian Navy carved their name with pride to build a service that would take shape as the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. And not just the pilots. The observers\, the engineers\, the mechanics\, the aircraft maintainers – and the families\, too – were in the thick of it\, creating a tradition. \nIn wartime the perils were evident. But peace has its hazards and dangers too\, for naval flying is ever at the cutting edge. The most skilled and experienced pilots found it daunting to land at night on the deck of a carrier\, a tiny rectangle pitching and rolling in a vast\, dark ocean. Accident and death hovered not far away. \nThis book tells the stories of these men\, much of it in their own words. They are the heroes who flew high in the Burning Blue. \n \nAbout the presenter \nMike Carlton \n In a working life of more than fifty years\, Mike Carlton was one of Australia’s best-known media figures in radio\, television and newspapers. \nBeginning as a cadet journalist at the ABC\, he became a war correspondent in Vietnam and for three years was the ABC’s Bureau Chief in Jakarta. He also reported for the ABC from London\, New York and major Asian capitals. In television\, he worked on the ABC’s groundbreaking This Day Tonight current affairs program in the 1970s and for Nine Network News and A Current Affair. \nIn 1980 Mike turned to talk radio\, first at Sydney’s 2UE and then 2GB\, and later at London’s LBC Newstalk 97.3FM\, where he won a coveted Sony Radio Academy award in 1993 for Britain’s best talk breakfast show. His radio satire on current affairs\, Friday News Review\, was ‘must listening’ in Australia and the UK. \nFor many years he wrote a popular weekly column for the Sydney Morning Herald. \nMike has had a life-long passion for naval history and is the author of Cruiser\, First Victory\, Flagship\, The Scrap Iron Flotilla and The Burning Blue. \nPublished: 28 July 2026 ISBN: 9781761354960 Imprint: Penguin Format: Trade Paperback Pages: 480 RRP: $36.99
