DESCRIPTION:Every year\, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month\, we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars and peacekeeping operations.\nThe Service: from 10.30am \nJoin us for the Victorian State Remembrance Day Ceremony\, attended by the Governor of Victoria. One minute of silence will be observed at 11am. The Royal Australian Navy Band will perform and there will be an RAAF flyover. Schools are encouraged to attend and student representatives will be invited to lay wreaths after the Governor’s address and formal wreath layings are complete. \nRay of Light: 11.50am – 12.10pm \nAll are invited to visit the Sanctuary to witness the sun pass across the Stone of Remembrance\, landing on the word ‘LOVE’ at 12 noon. Remembrance Ceremonies\, featuring a simulation of the Ray of Light\, will take place in the Sanctuary every half an hour from 12.30pm\, with the last ceremony held at 4.30pm. The Flag Ceremony and Last Post is conducted on the Shrine WWII Forecourt at 5.00pm. \nGalleries of Remembrance: 12.30pm – 7.00pm \nThe Galleries of Remembrance will be dedicated on this day\, which also marks the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance. DESCRIPTION:What was life like for Victorian WW1 soldiers when they returned from the war?\nThis talk analyses public records such as mental health\, medical and land settlement files linked to WW1 returned soldiers. Through the records we can uncover the scale of injuries returned soldiers suffered\, as well as the economic impact and farming life the soldiers faced when settled throughout regional Victoria. They provide an insight into how Australian society and the lives of these soldiers and their families were changed forever. \nThe National Archives of Australia and Public Record Office Victoria hold many records relating to defence force personnel who served in World War 1. \nThis talk analyses public records such as mental health\, medical and land settlement files linked to WW1 returned soldiers. The presentation will focus on National Archives’ Albany Repatriation and Public Record Office Victoria’s Battle to Farms soldier settlement records. \nThese two major digitisation projects have uncovered the scale of injuries returned soldiers suffered\, as well as the economic impact and farming life the soldier’s faced when settled throughout regional Victoria. They provide an insight into how Australian society and the lives of these soldiers and their families were changed forever. \nSpeakers: \nJP Grenade is the Project Support Officer for Project Albany. JP manages volunteers who are working on repatriation records which illustrate the impact of WWI on families and communities as well as individual servicemen and women. \nDaniel Wilksch is Coordinator\, Digital Projects at Public Record Office Victoria and has been involved in many projects putting archival information online\, including the Battle to Farm soldier settlement digitisation project. DESCRIPTION:As another Anzac Day approaches\, the story of the Gallipoli landing and the eight-month-long campaign that followed will be retold. Most accounts will dwell on stories of reckless courage\, endurance\, humour in adversity and\, above all\, mateship. Those qualities\, which together make up what we call “the Anzac spirit”\, we believe define our nation. Little wonder that the fascination with Gallipoli has never faded\, despite the passing of 99 years.\nYet how well do we Australians actually know the history of Gallipoli that has become a central part of our national foundation story? The Gallipoli story\, especially as it is widely understood\, is riddled with paradoxes and misconceptions. Gallipoli was a powerful generator of myths\, and over time\, the campaign and its supposed promise of victory have become exaggerated and romanticized. The clouding of myth and romance has obscured the events\, distorted historical perspectives\, and hampered impartial analysis. SUMMARY:2014 Reserve Forces Day Parade – Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:The Reserve Forces Day Parade will take the form of a ceremonial march led by a Military Band for former and current Navy\, Army and Air Force Reservists from Government House. Drive to the Shrine of Remembrance\, and conduct of a formal Parade and Commemorative Service on the Northern Forecourt of the Shrine. The event will be attended by Federal and State Members of Parliament\, Senior Defence Force Officers\, Local Government and civil dignitaries. SUMMARY:Commemoration of the First Shot of World War I
DESCRIPTION:Fort Queenscliff is the site where the order was given to fire the first shot in anger by the British Empire of WWI.  Artillery at Fort Nepean then fired warning shots at a German merchant ship endeavouring to escape internment. The shot marks the moment that Australia became involved in World War I. Over 61\,000 Australians would not come home. This ceremony is in commemoration of their sacrifice.\nThe commemoration will involve a service of remembrance\, a dedication of a memorial and a firing of the Fort’s saluting battery. The event is being supported by the Australian Defence Force and will be open to the public. Invitations are being extended to a wide range of local community groups\, local primary and secondary schools\, and ex-service organisations. \nThis is a Free public event.

DESCRIPTION:Royal United Services Institute  Victoria – Book Launch\nMark Dapin\, The Nashos’ War: Australia’s national servicemen and Vietnam \nOn 10 March 1965\, the first nasho’s birthdate was drawn from a lottery barrel at the Department of Labour and National Service in Melbourne.  Over the next seven years\, a total of 63740 young Australian men would be drafted into the army and face the prospect of being sent to war. \nThe nashos came from all walks of life: plumbers and dentists\, footballers and musicians\, Christians and Jews\, willing and unwilling.  Some spent their two years square-bashing in Singleton.  Others went to Vietnam to fight ‚Äì and die ‚Äì in Australia’s bloodiest battles\, including the slaughter at Long Tan. \nBut our ideas of national service contain strange contradictions and inaccuracies: that the draft was unpopular but militarily necessary; that the nashos in Vietnam all volunteered to go to war; and that they were met by protesters and demonstrations on their return to Australia\, rather than the huge welcome-home parades reported at the time. \nHere\, Mark Dapin dramatically deconstructs the folklore of Vietnam and national service.  Drawing on the accounts of over one hundred and fifty former national servicemen\, The Nashos’ War tells a vastly more personal and nuanced story of national service and Australia’s Vietnam War than that previously heard.
