SUMMARY:The Changing Character of War
DESCRIPTION:The Royal United Services Institute of Victoria is pleased to present: Colonel (Rtd) Richard Iron\, CMG\, OBE Visiting Fellow at Oxford University\nEntrance fee: $10.00 \nColonel Richard Iron was originally commissioned in 1975\, with early service in Germany\, Kenya and the Falkland Islands.  He served three years in the Sultan of Oman‚Äôs Armed Forces and several tours in Northern Ireland.  He attended both the British and US Army staff colleges. \nHe subsequently commanded 1st Battalion of the King‚Äôs Own Royal Border Regiment\, a mechanised infantry battalion\, serving in Bosnia and Macedonia/Kosovo. During two years as an instructor at the UK‚Äôs joint staff college he was responsible for development of campaigning concepts. He was subsequently responsible for development of British Army doctrine\, including its capstone Army Doctrine Publication Land Operations.  In this latter post he also deployed to the Coalition Land Component HQ in Kuwait in 2002-03\, where he led a UK/US planning team for the invasion of Iraq.  He was also responsible for the British Army‚Äôs subsequent analysis of the preparation for and execution of that invasion. \nHe has since served as the UK‚Äôs National Liaison Representative to NATO‚Äôs Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk\, Virginia. For six years he led the development of land doctrine in NATO\, including counter-insurgency doctrine. In addition\, he was an expert military witness for the prosecution in the Sierra Leone War Crimes trials\, where he worked with members of various guerrilla groups and gained valuable insight to the internal dynamic of such groups. \nFrom December 2007 to November 2008 he served as the Chief Mentor to the Basra Operations Commander in Iraq\, and commander of the British Advisor Team to the Basra Operations Command. In this appointment he was largely responsible for development and implementation of the Iraqi counter-insurgency plan for Basra\, including Operation Charge of the Knights. He also developed the security plan for the Iraq/Iran border through engagement with the Marsh Arabs. \nHe contributed to and edited the book British Generals in Blair’s Wars (Ashgate\, 2013) and is currently working on a military history of the Sierra Leone War 1991-2002. \nRichard Iron is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Changing Character of War (CCW) Programme at the University of Oxford. \nThe Oxford CCW Programme is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of war and armed conflict. It conducts research on a wide range of issues pertaining to the history of war in the modern period\, and seeks to be ‚Äòpolicy-relevant‚Äô to more recent conflicts through elucidation\, explication and education. In 2013-14\, its research priorities are the changing relationship between war and the state\, war in a connected world\, conventional and unconventional warfare\, civilians in war\, the history of the laws of war and the moral dimensions of war. \nDefence security policy requires you to advise the RUSI Office of your attendance and the name of all your guests\, either by email to martin.holme@defence.gov.au or phone 9282 5918. DESCRIPTION:The 2014 Seymour Military Heritage Weekend is ready to go off with a bang on Saturday 3 May and Sunday 4 May.\nThe stories of military life will come to life in a thrilling live event at the Australian Light Horse park in Seymour. \nMitchell Shire Council along with living history groups from all over the state present a two-day demonstration of military living history. This demonstration will feature encampments and re-enactments in addition to tours of significant military sites. \nVisitors will be able to experience the explosive power first hand as they are faced with realistic Australian world war re-enactments. The program features battlefield and sniper scenarios\, firing demonstrations from a variety of weapons\, a military vehicle display\, and entertainment for the children. \nThis demonstration will delight military enthusiasts\, history buffs and anyone interested in Australia‚Äôs war history. \nSaturday 3 May – get up close to the action\, equipment and heritage sites that bring history to life. \nJoin us for Military Re-enactments\, Vehicle Displays\, Live Music and Entertainment for the children at the Australian Light Horse Park\, Seymour from 1pm – 8pm. \n1pm: Festivities Begin \nThe weekend kicks off at the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park\, Seymour with a variety of military vehicle displays\, music from the Melbourne Australian Army Band and entertainment for the whole family \n3pm: Military Heritage Re-enactments – Be a part of the action. \nJoin us for the main event as we re-enact different aspects of historical training and camp life at the Seymour Camp throughout its history. It will involve fully uniformed\, re-created soldiers from Australia and the United States conducting simulated field firing and tactical training from The Great War\, and the Second World War. Taking part in this re-enactment will be dismounted troops\, artillery and vehicles. \nThe evening will conclude with a dazzling display of fireworks that will light up the Seymour night sky\, \nLocation: Goulburn Valley Highway\, Seymour. \nThis year\, the Military Heritage Weekend will be held at the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park\, Seymour. The park was once part of Victoria’s largest Army base\, the Seymour Camp\, also known as Site 17. \nComprising 150 hectares of park land\, scattered throughout with relics of the camp days (including original horse troughs)\, the park has walking trails\, memorials\, and a marvellous information pavilion\, located just across the creek from the picnic area and carpark. DESCRIPTION:2014 will mark the centenary of the capture of the German wireless station at Bita Paka in Rabaul on 11 September 1914 by the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF)\, commanded by Colonel William Holmes DSO.\nWar between Britain and Germany was declared on 4 August and a few days later a telegram was sent by the British Secretary of State for Colonies to the Australian Governor-General\, asking that German wireless stations be seized at Yap (in the Caroline Islands)\, at Nauru(in the south west Pacific Ocean) and at Rabaul (in Papua New Guinea). New Zealand forces were asked to seize the German wireless station at Samoa. \nAn expeditionary force of 1\,500 men was raised\, known as the ANMEF\, comprising a 1\,023 man army battalion\, two machine gun sections\, a signals section and an Army Medical Corps detachment. Naval Reservists came from Queensland\, New South Wales\, Victoria and South Australia; the soldiers came from New South Wales. \nThis important but little known part of the First World War (1914-18) will be explored by the Shrine’s David Howell. David\, best known for his attention to the Kokoda Track Campaign\, has been involved with battlefield tours & treks in Papua New Guinea for over ten years. The Bristol BoxKite was the first military aircraft flown in Australia at RAAF Point Cook\, on 1 March 1914. No original Bristol BoxKite aircraft survive today. Three reproductions were built for the making of the film ‘Those magnificent men in their flying machines’. Between 1939 and 1945\, they flew in both Australian and British squadrons with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in Coastal\, Bomber and Fighter Commands. \n  \n\nSurrey\, England. C. 1942. Portrait of a pilot of No. 457 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF at RAF Station Redhill on one of the Squadron's Spitfire aircraft.\n  \nAustralia\, with the other British Dominions had adopted the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) to provide trained aircrews to fight with the RAF. Australian recruits received elementary training at air bases around Australia and many of them were then sent overseas for advanced training. Before the scheme ended in mid-1944\, more than 10\,000 Australians had received advanced training in Canada and 674 had been sent to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) before joining the RAF in Britain. Squadrons which were predominantly Australian aircrew were designated as RAAF squadrons and 17 of these were eventually formed: 12 in Britain and 5 in the Middle East. Many Australians also served in RAF squadrons. \n  \nAustralians served mainly as aircrew – pilots\, engineers\, navigators\, wireless operators\, observers and air gunners. Some also went as ground crew and carried out the maintenance and administrative tasks on the ground necessary to keep aircraft flying. Although their numbers amounted to less than 2 per cent of Australia‚Äôs World War II enlistments\, the 3486 men who were killed in Bomber Command accounted for almost 20 per cent of all Australian combat deaths. DESCRIPTION:MHHV and its supporter\, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV)\, will hold a major Exhibition at the RHSV \n\n \n  \nThe Exhibition is to commemorate the centenary of the arrival of Australia‚Äôs first light cruiser\, HMAS Melbourne\, in Port Phillip Bay\, on 26 March 1913\, as part of the new Royal Australian Navy.¬† HMAS Melbourne took the crest of the City of Melbourne and its credo ‚ÄòGather Strength as She Goes‚Äô. \nThe Melbourne\, a 5\,600 ton ship with eight 6-inch guns\, served  the RAN from its commissioning in England in 1912 until its  decommissioning\, also in England in 1928.¬† She saw war service in the  operations against the German colonies in the SW Pacific in 1914\,  escorted the 1st AIF fleet from Albany\, WA; saw service with  the West Indies Squadron in 1915-1916; then served with the North Sea  Fleet in 1916-1918. In 1922 the Melbourne was involved in a dramatic  rescue of the crew of an American schooner in the Tasman Sea\, at the  height of a hurricane. \nThese events and other cruises of the Melbourne will be  highlighted with artefacts of the ship and crew memorabilia drawn from  the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian National Maritime Museum\,  Museum Victoria\, Monash University\, the Museum of HMAS Cerberus\, and  from individual donations. \n \nThe official opening of the Exhibition will be held at the RHSV on 26  March 2013 at 6 pm\, open to MHHV and RHSV members and descendants of  the crew of HMAS Melbourne.¬† The opening will see the launch of a new history of the Melbourne ‚Äì The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1912-1928\, by historians Andrew Kilsby and Commander Greg Swinden\, RAN.\nFollowing the official opening\, a free public lecture will be held on  the subject of the Exhibition on 26 March 2013 at 7 pm at the RHSV\,  presented by the authors of the history. \nIndependent curator Cooee History and Heritage has been appointed to produce the exhibition pro bono with support from MHHV\, RHSV and Deakin University volunteers.\nThe Exhibition is sponsored by the Port of Melbourne Corporation\, Navy Health\, and the Melbourne Naval Centre. \nEntry is free to MHHV and RHSV members and Port of Melbourne Corporation employees\, otherwise entry is by donation of $5 per head. \n \nTo  find more about “Sailors\, Ships and Imperial Defence” The early  Australian Naval Forces to 1922 One Day Conference at the RHSV\, click  here \nHMAS Melbourne arrived in Port Phillip Bay on 26 March 1913.¬†  ¬†It was the prequel to the RAN Fleet entering Sydney Harbour on 4  October 1913.¬† Led by the battle cruiser HMAS Australia\, Melbourne led the remainder of the Fleet into the harbour for the Fleet review.¬† Between 3-5 October 2013 there will be an International Fleet Review to commemorate this historic event. ¬†See the Prequel at the Exhibition – Fear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928 at the RHSV over 18 February ‚Äì 1 May2013\, to commemorate 100 years since Australia‚Äôs first cruiser arrived in Melbourne.
