SUMMARY:The Enemy Within  Internment and Prisoner of War Camps in Victoria 1939-47
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the experiences of prisoners of war and civilian internees in Victoria during the Second World War (1939-45) and discover a little known aspect of Australia’s history. This exhibition explores the impacts on prisoners of war and internees who lived and worked in camps. Between 1939 and 1947 rural Victoria hosted eight internment and prisoner of war camps from the network that was scattered across Australia. The camps operated as communities and incorporated canteens\, hospitals\, dental and recreational facilities and schools.\nBy 1947 almost 26\,000 prisoners of war and 15\,000 internees had experienced the camp system\, living in tin huts behind barbed wire. They were known as the ‘enemy’ or ‘enemy aliens’. The notion of nationality became a divise issue of war on the home front and the experience of internment would have a lasting impact on Australia’s migrant and wider community.

SUMMARY:Fear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne (1912-1928) Exhibition at the RHSV
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and its supporter\, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV)\, will hold a major Exhibition at the RHSV \n\n \n  \nThe Exhibition is to commemorate the centenary of the arrival of Australia‚Äôs first light cruiser\, HMAS Melbourne\, in Port Phillip Bay\, on 26 March 1913\, as part of the new Royal Australian Navy.¬† HMAS Melbourne took the crest of the City of Melbourne and its credo ‚ÄòGather Strength as She Goes‚Äô. \nThe Melbourne\, a 5\,600 ton ship with eight 6-inch guns\, served  the RAN from its commissioning in England in 1912 until its  decommissioning\, also in England in 1928.¬† She saw war service in the  operations against the German colonies in the SW Pacific in 1914\,  escorted the 1st AIF fleet from Albany\, WA; saw service with  the West Indies Squadron in 1915-1916; then served with the North Sea  Fleet in 1916-1918. In 1922 the Melbourne was involved in a dramatic  rescue of the crew of an American schooner in the Tasman Sea\, at the  height of a hurricane. \nThese events and other cruises of the Melbourne will be  highlighted with artefacts of the ship and crew memorabilia drawn from  the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian National Maritime Museum\,  Museum Victoria\, Monash University\, the Museum of HMAS Cerberus\, and  from individual donations. \n \nThe official opening of the Exhibition will be held at the RHSV on 26  March 2013 at 6 pm\, open to MHHV and RHSV members and descendants of  the crew of HMAS Melbourne.¬† The opening will see the launch of a new history of the Melbourne ‚Äì The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1912-1928\, by historians Andrew Kilsby and Commander Greg Swinden\, RAN.\nFollowing the official opening\, a free public lecture will be held on  the subject of the Exhibition on 26 March 2013 at 7 pm at the RHSV\,  presented by the authors of the history. \nIndependent curator Cooee History and Heritage has been appointed to produce the exhibition pro bono with support from MHHV\, RHSV and Deakin University volunteers.\nThe Exhibition is sponsored by the Port of Melbourne Corporation\, Navy Health\, and the Melbourne Naval Centre. \nEntry is free to MHHV and RHSV members and Port of Melbourne Corporation employees\, otherwise entry is by donation of $5 per head. \n \nTo  find more about “Sailors\, Ships and Imperial Defence” The early  Australian Naval Forces to 1922 One Day Conference at the RHSV\, click  here \nHMAS Melbourne arrived in Port Phillip Bay on 26 March 1913.¬†  ¬†It was the prequel to the RAN Fleet entering Sydney Harbour on 4  October 1913.¬† Led by the battle cruiser HMAS Australia\, Melbourne led the remainder of the Fleet into the harbour for the Fleet review.¬† Between 3-5 October 2013 there will be an International Fleet Review to commemorate this historic event. ¬†See the Prequel at the Exhibition – Fear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928 at the RHSV over 18 February ‚Äì 1 May2013\, to commemorate 100 years since Australia‚Äôs first cruiser arrived in Melbourne. \nFor School Groups\, see Teacher Guide here

SUMMARY:By the Seat of their Pants - Australian Airmen and their Machines 1915-1918
DESCRIPTION:The Great War saw the emergence of an Australian Flying Corps (AFC)\, which by 1918 was making a tangible contribution to Allied air operations in the Middle East and on the Western Front. Over the operational phases of the war\, the airmen and ground crews adapted to new aircraft types while facing a determined enemy with first-class machines of their own. Some Australian airmen became ‘aces’\, others were shot down and captured; many were killed or disabled. But the war in the air had its own character and culture\, and chivalry remained despite the ferocity of the combat.  Almost 100 years on\, this symposium aims to explore growing interest both by academic and professional historians in the Australian Flying Corps during these years\, especially with regard to the many human factors involved as well as the evolving aircraft technology and tactics. \nWhere did the Australians fit in to Allied air operations? How did they rate as pilots and units? How did they adapt to new aircraft types and tactics? How did they fare against a skilful and well-led enemy? What was their POW experience? Who were our ‘aces?’ How were airmen and the air war represented in an emerging media? These are some of the questions this symposium seeks to address. \nThis one-day conference presents papers from a range of historians\, authors and other subject matter specialists in and around the setting of the aircraft and displays of the RAAF Museum at the historic Point Cook base. A Panel session will conclude the day’s proceedings before attendees are invited to further explore the Museum and its facilities. \n2012 marks 100 years since the Federal Government purchased the land at Point Cook which became the home of the first AFC flying school. The facility trained many Australian airmen before and during WWI; a role it continues to play today. Through the generous co-operation and good will of the staff concerned\, the conference will take place in the heart of the RAAF Museum surrounded by the aeroplanes\, artefacts and displays that represents the rich history and the very essence of AFC/RAAF aviation. \nExclusive Use  \nThe RAAF Museum at Point Cook has given MHHV exclusive use for Monday 12 November 2012 to hold this important and engaging one day conference\, which will be held right in the Museum itself among its heritage collection of WWI aircraft and artefacts. This talk will explore the research underpinning Professor Scates‚Äô most recent book On Dangerous Ground: A Gallipoli Story\, examine the contested truths of the past and consider the enduring importance of Gallipoli in our national consciousness.\n \nOn Dangerous Ground is about unresolved loss\, the need to know\, and a story of reconciliation that bridges countries and generations. Fusing literature\, fiction and history\, it journeys across a real and imagined landscape\, empowering voices and lives too long locked in the archives. Steeped in a deep knowledge of the past and courageously contemporary\, it asks what Gallipoli means in the twenty-first century. Professor Bruce Scates has led several battlefield tours of Gallipoli\, Crete and the Western Front. SUMMARY:An Australian foreign policy? Australia in War and Peace\, 1914-19
DESCRIPTION:The question of whether an Australian foreign policy existed during the First World War arises because there was no Department of Foreign Affairs at that time.\nThrough ‚ÄòAustralia in War and Peace\, 1914-19‚Äô\, a major collaborative research project between the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies (MCAS) at King‚Äôs College London and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra\, we illustrate that there was indeed an Australian foreign policy at the time\, despite the lack of recognisable instruments and institutions. Australian foreign policy operated instead in an imperial context. The ultimate goal of our project is to produce a volume of Documents on Australian Foreign Policy on War and Peace\, 1914-19. The publication will follow the model of the previous volume produced by the same partners\, Australia and the United Kingdom\, 1960-1975\, which consisted of painstakingly selected\, historically significant Australian and British documents illuminating the Anglo-Australian relationship. In this talk we will outline the main features of the new research project\, explore its major themes and share some of the fruits of our research so far. \nTuesday 4 December\, 5.30pm arrival for a 6pm start. DESCRIPTION:Victorian Collections is a new free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to collecting organisations throughout Victoria\, including RSLs and military heritage groups.\nOver the coming months workshops for volunteers to learn this cataloguing system will be held across Victoria Рin Melbourne\, Sale\, Bright\, Port Fairy\, Warrnambool\, St Arnaud and Mt Helen. \nVictorian Collections is a free\, easy to use\, online cataloguing system that is available to all types of collecting organisations throughout Victoria. \nThe Victorian Collections cataloguing workshop is a complete day of training from 10am Р4pm. There is a morning of basic collection management training and after lunch each attendee will photograph and catalogue an item from their organisation’s collection using the Victorian Collections system. Each organisation should aim to send at least 2 or 3 people to the training. This will spread the load of cataloguing\, distribute the experience and make cataloguing an easier and more pleasant experience. \nPlease bring a collection item for each person attending the training session. \nTraining is provided by Peta Knott\, Project Manager for Victorian Collections\, MA (Vic) \nMorning tea and lunch will be provided. It was end 1914/beginning 1915 that the war changed face : from having been a war on the move\, it changed to a war of stalemate. Eventually 5 major battles were to be fought in the Salient \nFinding silent witnesses of war: \nToday\, there are hardly any visible signs of the Great War\, other than the many cemeteries and memorials\, to explain to what extend the Salient was destroyed. Yet\, year after year\, evidence of that conflict is being found. \nEven now\, human remains are still being unearthed. Modern technology is being applied in an attempt to identify those remains. A set procedure results in the fact that those soldiers are being put to the their final resting place with military honour. DNA research has let to several positive identifications over the last years \n  \nIron harvest \nOrdnance is part of daily life for those working in the soil : farmers\, contractors\, constructors\, everyone is aware of the fact that they will come across life ammunition. An average of over 200 tons of ammunition is still being collected every year. A heritage with which has to be dealt with in the appropriate way. High explosive shells\, shrapnel shells\, trench mortars\, hand- and rifle grenades\, toxic ammunition : it is all part of the iron harvest in the Salient \nDealing with the legacy \nThe Belgian bomb disposal squad has a high reputation. Today they are being send out throughout the world to clean up more recent battlefields. A lot of their experience goes back to the battlefields of the Great War : they have specialised knowledge how to dismantle all different types of shells. The toxic ones being the most dangerous ones around here. \nHuman suffering almost a century later \nYear after year\, the war still causes victims on the battlefields : private collectors messing around with shells\, children picking up a hand grenade\, farmers being confronted with an explosion while working the fields. Rules are being set to reduce the risks to a minimum. \nA story that continues \nWorking in the soil reveals more of the history of this area : helmets\, rifles\, rum jars\, badges\, buckles\, silent pickets etc\,¬† which are still being found are revealing more information. Occasionally ammunition supplies\, ammunition dumps or a tunnel are being discovered as well. Research in archives gives information on dugouts which are still down deep Flanders Fields today. \nCV \n– Born 19/09/1958 in Poperinge\, Belgium\n– started up B&B Varlet Farm\, specialised for guests having an interest in the Great War\, in 1998. One of the first B&B’s in the area long before there was a vivid interest in the history of the Great War. Varlet Farm has been listed in the top 10 of European B&B ‘s in the trip advisor 2011 ranking\n– became a qualified battlefield guide in 2004\n– one of the founding members of the Passchendaele Society 1917\, a charity organisation that organises commemoration events in the Salient\n– thriving force behind the commemorations events to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele\n– worked a battlefield guide for the NZ embassy on Anzac Day in from 2004 till 2009\n– lectured to groups from all over the world\, coming to Varlet Farm : these groups vary from students\, army cadets\, army officers\, bomb disposal squads to adults with a strong interest in the history of the Great War.\n– established contact between the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 and the 48th Highlander Regimental Museum in Toronto\n– lectured at the WFA seminar in Victoria\, Vancouver Island\, in March 2011\n– carried out research work for the Passchendaele Memorial Museum 1917 at the National Archives in Kew\n– represented the community of Zonnebeke at the inauguration of a new WWI memorial in Essex on November 4th\, 2011.

DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal .
