DESCRIPTION:Mud and Blood\, Meg McNena’s compelling 80-minute\, six-actor play\, is about distinguished Australian general\, Harold ‘Pompey’ Elliott\, who led the Essendon Rifles and took most of them to WWI. \n \nThe tenacity of Australian men and women is shown in battle and at home. Timing in 2018 with Anzac and Armistice centenaries adds impact. Set 1914-1921\, it shows how Pompey Elliott and a soldier’s mother deal with his vow to look after ‘his boys’ in war as if they were his own. This vow\, driving the play’s drama\, was made at a farewell to troops a century ago at Essendon Town Hall\, now the Clocktower Centre\, where Mud and Blood will be centre-stage on Fri 31 August. Women’s efforts and struggles are also pivotal . DESCRIPTION:The subject of this year‚Äôs lecture will be the C130 Hercules in RAAF Service. It will be presented by two guest speakers.\nTICKET ONLY EVENT\, limited by the RAAF Museum to 200 guests in total. Ticket price includes light refreshments. \nGuest Speakers: \nWGCDR Robyn Clay-Williams (retd)\, BEng\, PhD \nThe first speaker to have accepted our invitation is; Dr Robyn Clay-Williams who was a RAAF test pilot\, flight instructor and electronics engineer. Robyn was involved with the iconic C-130 at two points in her 24 year RAAF career: firstly in the early 1980s with the C-130E/H as an engineering officer at 486SQN\, and secondly from 1995-2000 as the C-130J-30 acquisition test pilot based a Lockheed Martin in Marietta\, USA. Robyn has over 3000 flying hours in more than 20 types of aircraft from large transport\, to fast jet\, helicopters\, and light aerobatics\, and in the late 1980s was on the first RAAF pilot‚Äôs course to accept women. \nNowadays\, Robyn is a Senior Research Fellow with the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University in Sydney. \n  \nAIRCDRE John (Sam) Samulski CSC (retd) \nThe second speaker to have accepted our invitation is: AIRCDRE John Samulski who joined the RAAF in 1981 as a Navigator and has over 7000 flying hours. He has commanded at Squadron and Wing level\, being a Squadron Commander during the initial phases of both the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. He has also seen operations in the first Gulf war\, Somalia and Cambodia. \nIn early 2005\, he was appointed as the Australian Deputy Force Commander for Operation Sumatra Assist following Indian Ocean Tsunami. At the same time\, he was appointed as the inaugural Director of the RAAF Air Mobility Control Centre\, responsible for the planning and execution of all ADF air mobility operations. \nAir Commodore Samulski has served as the Chief of Staff to the Vice Chief of the Defence Force\, and as Deputy Director of Coalition Coordination at Headquarters U.S. Central Command. DESCRIPTION:In what promises to be a riveting presentation\, Dr Johnston follows a small group of front-line soldiers from their enlistment in the dark days of 1940 to the end of World War II.\n \n \nNo ordinary soldiers\, they are members of Don Company and part of the famous 9th Australian Division which\, during their campaigns\, sustained more casualties and won more medals than any other Australian Division. \nThe presentation will give a powerful account of everyday experiences of a small unit of soldiers on the front line. It will follow three infantry men on night patrols at Tobruk\, advances through German barrages at Alamein\, charges into enemy machine guns in New Guinea and repelling Japanese charges in Borneo. \nMark Johnson is Head of the History Department at Scotch College\, Melbourne. Dr Johnston has published eleven books principally about the Australian Army in the Second World War and was described in the Australian War Memorial’s magazine\, Wartime as ‘the leading historian on the experience of Australian soldiers during the war’. SUMMARY:The Diggers Requiem - A moving Brass tribute to those who sacrificed so much
DESCRIPTION:The Diggers‚Äô Requiem is a moving and beautiful Australian tribute to mark the end of World War One a century ago and is dedicated to the memory of our Defence Force personnel and civilian victims. Including music written by seven of Australia‚Äôs finest living composers\, these prelude concerts will be performed in Melbourne on Wednesday\, 26 September and in Sydney on 27 September\, with an Australian premiere of the full orchestral and choral version premiere concert in Canberra on Saturday 6 October 2018. The Diggers’ Requiem was co-commissioned by the Australian Department of Veterans‚Äô Affairs and the Australian War Memorial\, with the Brass concerts supported by the Australian Defence Force.\nThe Melbourne and Sydney concerts will feature 12 works accompanied by projected historical imagery. These brass concerts have been written for trumpet\, accordion\, soprano\, mezzo\, tenor\, baritone\, bagpipes and brass band and will be performed by leading soloists\, including Paul Goodchild trumpet (Aus)\, David Novak accordion (Slovenia)\, Simone Riksman soprano (Holland)\, Christina Wilson mezzo (Aus)\, Andrew Goodwin tenor (Aus)\, David Hidden baritone\, Jason Craig bagpipes (Aus) and will be Directed by Christopher Latham. \nThe concerts will be free for audiences and will be held in Melbourne at St Paul‚Äôs Cathedral\, 209 Flinders Lane at 7pm and in Sydney at the Pitt Street Uniting Church\, 264 Pitt Street at 7pm. DESCRIPTION:On behalf of Lee Tarlamis OAM President of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee (LGCC)\, I would like to invite you to attend the Centenary of the Armistice of Moudros Keynote Address by Historian and Secretary of the LGCC Jim Claven \n10.30 am Education Centre Shrine of Remembrance¬†followed by Commemorative Service Shrine of Remembrance Sanctuary 11.45 am on 31 October 2018 \nThis commemorative service marks the centenary of the coming into effect of the Armistice of Moudros at noon on 31 October 1918. SUMMARY:The Tokyo Tribunal: 70th Anniversary of the Judgment on Japan’s War Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the post-war Tokyo Tribunal\, the Allied powers charged Japanese leaders with waging aggressive war and committing war crimes against prisoners-ofwar and civilians. This trial\, presided over by the Australian judge\, William Webb was criticised at the time (and still to this day) for its retrospective charges and procedural shortcomings. After its conclusion with the handing down of the majority judgment in November 1948\, the Allies deemed the trial to have been a failure and closed the door against further prosecutions for international crimes.\nYet the themes raised in the course of the trial continue to resonate 70 years later. The trial did not succeed in settling accounts: the issue of Japan‚Äôs wartime actions remains highly topical in Asia\, with still active claims for redress for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Even so\, the legal innovations advanced at the Tribunal to deal with these actions\, such as the then-novel idea of civilian command responsibility and the much-maligned charge of crimes against peace\, have reappeared in new guises at the International Criminal Court. \nAt this event\, three leading experts on international criminal justice in Asia aim to cast new light on the proceedings by re-examining the purposes\, conduct and legacies of the Tokyo Tribunal. \nProfessor Neil Boister is head of the School of Law at the University of Canterbury\, Christchurch\, and the author\, with Robert Cryer\, of The Tokyo International Military Tribunal: A Reappraisal (2008) and the edited volume\, Documents on the Tokyo International Military Tribunal (2008). DESCRIPTION:As 2018 marks the half-centenary of the most tumultuous year of the Vietnam War\, when much of the world seemed on the verge of revolution\, it is an appropriate time to revisit some of the major themes of the debates that divided Australian politics and society. As Melbourne was the epicentre of Australia’s political earthquake\, this is the appropriate place as well as time for such a retrospective.\nWhat do we now know that we did not know fifty years ago? \nHow do some of the major arguments presented by participants in the debates of 1968\, on all sides\, look with the benefit of fifty years’ hindsight? \nWhich long-held beliefs now appear to be myths or half-truths? \nPeter Edwards\, currently an honorary professor at both Deakin University and the Australian National University\, was the Official Historian of Australia’s involvement in Southeast Asian Conflicts 1948-75. He was the general editor of the nine-volume series and author of the two volumes dealing with political\, diplomatic and social aspects\, Crises and Commitments (1992) and A Nation at War (1997). Most recently he published his personal distillation of the series\, Australia and the Vietnam War (2014). \nPeter is also the author\, co-author\, editor or co-editor of a number of other books and monographs\, mostly dealing with Australian national security policy and policy-making. His books have won a number of major literary awards. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his historical work and elected a Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs for his ‘outstanding contribution to Australia’s international relations’.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Terry O’Farrell OAMTerry O’Farrell is a former deputy commander of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment where he gained invaluable experience in counter insurgency warfare through combat deployments to South Vietnam\, the Sinai\, East Timor and Afghanistan. On leaving the Australian Army in November 2004 he took up an advisory position with the United Arab Emirates special operations command where he was promoted to Brigadier General. In that role he directed operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and in-country where he realigned the national counter terrorist force\, SOP and supporting plans. \nHe was also a member of the Abu Dhabi Counter Terrorist committee and a trusted advisor and mentor to selected members of the royal family. In 2011 he resigned his commission to take up a senior training position with the UAE State Security Department (an organisation combining the functions of ASIS and ASIO) where he developed and implemented a bespoke training program designed to select Emirati men and women for advanced training as intelligence officers.
