DESCRIPTION:On behalf of Lee Tarlamis OAM President of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee (LGCC)\, I would like to invite you to attend the Centenary of the Armistice of Moudros Keynote Address by Historian and Secretary of the LGCC Jim Claven \n10.30 am Education Centre Shrine of Remembrance¬†followed by Commemorative Service Shrine of Remembrance Sanctuary 11.45 am on 31 October 2018 \nThis commemorative service marks the centenary of the coming into effect of the Armistice of Moudros at noon on 31 October 1918. The Armistice was signed the previous day on the British warship HMS Agamemnon anchored in the Greek island of Lemnos’ Moudros Bay by representatives of the Entente Powers and those of the Ottoman Empire. \nThe Keynote Address will be given by Historian and Secretary of our Committee Jim Claven who will discuss this agreement which ended the fighting between the Allies and the Ottoman Empire across the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East and affected tens of thousands of Australian soldiers throughout the region. \nTo book for the Keynote Address by Jim Claven at the Education Centre\, click here.¬† You will need to make a booking and pay a small fee. SUMMARY:The Tokyo Tribunal: 70th Anniversary of the Judgment on Japan’s War Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the post-war Tokyo Tribunal\, the Allied powers charged Japanese leaders with waging aggressive war and committing war crimes against prisoners-ofwar and civilians. This trial\, presided over by the Australian judge\, William Webb was criticised at the time (and still to this day) for its retrospective charges and procedural shortcomings. After its conclusion with the handing down of the majority judgment in November 1948\, the Allies deemed the trial to have been a failure and closed the door against further prosecutions for international crimes.\nYet the themes raised in the course of the trial continue to resonate 70 years later. The trial did not succeed in settling accounts: the issue of Japan‚Äôs wartime actions remains highly topical in Asia\, with still active claims for redress for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Even so\, the legal innovations advanced at the Tribunal to deal with these actions\, such as the then-novel idea of civilian command responsibility and the much-maligned charge of crimes against peace\, have reappeared in new guises at the International Criminal Court. \nAt this event\, three leading experts on international criminal justice in Asia aim to cast new light on the proceedings by re-examining the purposes\, conduct and legacies of the Tokyo Tribunal. \nProfessor Neil Boister is head of the School of Law at the University of Canterbury\, Christchurch\, and the author\, with Robert Cryer\, of The Tokyo International Military Tribunal: A Reappraisal (2008) and the edited volume\, Documents on the Tokyo International Military Tribunal (2008). His research lies at the intersection of criminal law and international law and focuses on transnational crime. \nProfessor Robert Cribb is professor of Asian history at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs\, Australian National University\, and the author of Japanese War Criminals: The Politics of Justice after the Second World War (2017) (with Sandra Wilson\, Beatrice Trefalt and Dean Aszkielowicz). His research focuses on national identity\, mass violence\, environmental politics and historical geography. \nDr Kirsten Sellars is visiting fellow at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs\, Australian National University\, and the author of ‚ÄòCrimes against Peace‚Äô and International Law (2015)\, and the edited volume\, Trials for International Crimes in Asia (2015). DESCRIPTION:In the last months of the First World War the light horsemen of the Australian Mounted Division took part in a remarkable advance that started in Central Palestine\, near modern Tel Aviv\, and finished at Aleppo in northern Syria. On the way the city of Damascus fell to the advancing Australian horsemen. DESCRIPTION:The significance and meanings of notable dates\, eras and events are both highly historically-contested and geographically-specific. They are also often intensely personal. While the focus of most of the papers in this symposium is political Рthe ‘events’ of 1968 and the legacies of the protest movements of the 1960s in Australia and elsewhere Рmy introductory paper takes a more social and cultural approach to exploring the various meanings and legacies of ‘the Sixties’.\nIt does so by documenting a range of issues and events from the ‘long-1960s’ in Melbourne and speculates on their on-going effects on the city and Australian society more generally in the decades since. \nSeamus O’Hanlon teaches contemporary and urban history at Monash University. His latest book is City Life: the new urban Australia\, which has just been published by NewSouth.

DESCRIPTION:As 2018 marks the half-centenary of the most tumultuous year of the Vietnam War\, when much of the world seemed on the verge of revolution\, it is an appropriate time to revisit some of the major themes of the debates that divided Australian politics and society. As Melbourne was the epicentre of Australia’s political earthquake\, this is the appropriate place as well as time for such a retrospective.\nWhat do we now know that we did not know fifty years ago? \nHow do some of the major arguments presented by participants in the debates of 1968\, on all sides\, look with the benefit of fifty years’ hindsight? \nWhich long-held beliefs now appear to be myths or half-truths? \nPeter Edwards\, currently an honorary professor at both Deakin University and the Australian National University\, was the Official Historian of Australia’s involvement in Southeast Asian Conflicts 1948-75. He was the general editor of the nine-volume series and author of the two volumes dealing with political\, diplomatic and social aspects\, Crises and Commitments (1992) and A Nation at War (1997). Most recently he published his personal distillation of the series\, Australia and the Vietnam War (2014). \nPeter is also the author\, co-author\, editor or co-editor of a number of other books and monographs\, mostly dealing with Australian national security policy and policy-making. His books have won a number of major literary awards. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his historical work and elected a Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs for his ‘outstanding contribution to Australia’s international relations’.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Terry O’Farrell OAMTerry O’Farrell is a former deputy commander of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment where he gained invaluable experience in counter insurgency warfare through combat deployments to South Vietnam\, the Sinai\, East Timor and Afghanistan. On leaving the Australian Army in November 2004 he took up an advisory position with the United Arab Emirates special operations command where he was promoted to Brigadier General. In that role he directed operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and in-country where he realigned the national counter terrorist force\, SOP and supporting plans. \nHe was also a member of the Abu Dhabi Counter Terrorist committee and a trusted advisor and mentor to selected members of the royal family. In 2011 he resigned his commission to take up a senior training position with the UAE State Security Department (an organisation combining the functions of ASIS and ASIO) where he developed and implemented a bespoke training program designed to select Emirati men and women for advanced training as intelligence officers. DESCRIPTION:The immense German onslaught in March 1918 led to Britain‚Äôs gravest crisis of World War I. The Australians were rushed to the rescue in this climax of the conflict. The significance of what they did in 1918 is under-recognised today\, but they were influencing the destiny of the world more than Australians have done in any other year before or since.\nThe culmination of their vital contribution in the dramatic defensive phase was the stunning counter-attack at Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918\, which was acclaimed by General Monash (who was not involved himself) as ‘the finest thing yet done in the war by Australians or any other troops’. \nNo one was more pivotal than Pompey Elliott\, Australia‚Äôs most famous fighting general. DESCRIPTION:The annual service commemorating the signing of the peace treaty of Vereeniging on the 31st May 1902 to end the Boer War will take place at the Shrine of Remembrance on Sunday 27th May 2018. The service will pay tribute to the memory of 23\,000 men and women who served\, and the 1\,000 who paid the supreme sacrifice.\nThe march will commence from the Shrine’s lower forecourt on Anzac Avenue\, and finish at the Perpetual Flame. The service commemoration address will be delivered by The Honorable Major General Greg Garde AO RFD QC supported by Creswick Light Horse\, Historical Re-enactment Society of Australia\, Australian Great War Association\, Rats of Tobruk Pipes and Drums\, The Salvation Army\, Scouts and Guides. \nThe Scouts and Guides that attend in uniform will be awarded an attractive personalized A4 Certificate. DESCRIPTION:Sisters and Misters is a Melbourne based vocal group that provides opportunities for people of all ages to sing songs to the wider community whilst improving their self-esteem and confidence\, as well as providing social interaction. The majority of these people come to the group with no previous singing experience\nSisters and Misters perform songs from the 60’s through to current hits. \nIn 2011 the group appeared on national television in the talent show Australia’s Got Talent\, they received a standing ovation from all 3 judges and subsequently were one of 48 acts Australia wide to go through to the semi-finals. \nThe group spreads the joy of singing to aged care facilities\, retirement villages\, hospitals\, special need communities\, markets\, festivals\, The Olivia Newton John Wellness Walk\, school fundraisers\, hospitals\, charities\, as well Rotary and Probus functions.
