DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of 1918\, three years of fighting and destruction had failed to produce any clear result on the Western Front. \n \nThe Eastern Front had collapsed following the October 1917 Revolution in Russia\, allowing Germany to redeploy troops from that Front to the Western Front. \nIt was expected that Germany had the upper hand and would launch a major offensive in the spring. \nBoth sides sensed that 1918 would be decisive…yet neither side could be assured of victory. \nAbout 117\,000 Australian men were in France at this time\, constituting about one-eleventh of the overall British armies. \nOver the winter of 1917-18 the five Australian divisions were reorganised into an Australian Corps\, initially commanded by General William Birdwood\, but eventually replaced by Lieutenant General John Monash. \nAs well as the servicemen of the army\, navy and flying corps\, many other kinds of personnel made up the AIF\, such as medical personnel and chaplains. \nHow could the anticipated German offensive be beaten? What technology and tactics could be applied? How might the reorganisation and retraining of the Australian Corps contribute to this anticipated battle? What would be the consequences of failure? SUMMARY:The 76th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin on the 19th February 1942
DESCRIPTION:The attack on Darwin on 19 February 1942 by the Japanese was the first attack ever made by an enemy on Australian soil.\nThe devastating attack by 242 Japanese aircraft\, sunk 8 and damaged 15 of the 45 ships in the harbour\, 23 aircraft were destroyed and an estimated 900 people killed with many hundreds injured. \nAlthough Battalions of soldiers were rushed to Darwin following the attack on Pearl Harbour\, Australia’s defences were totally inadequate against such an attack.\nAltogether 683 bombs over two raids were dropped on Darwin in one day and up to that time was the biggest air raid of WW2. \nStrict censorship was imposed on all information regarding the air raids and all official documents were stamped “Not to be released until 1995”. \nAbout 200\,000 Australians served in Darwin in WW2 and through this ceremony we give them the recognition and respect they have earned for their efforts in the defence of their country and its people.\nVeterans\, their families and members of the public are welcome to attend. \nFurther Details – contact Bernadette Lightfoot – 03 9500 2399 or bern@ryebuck.com.au

Staff and volunteers from small- to medium-sized non-metropolitan collecting organisations\, including galleries\, libraries\, archives\, museums\, indigenous keeping places\, sporting clubs\, returned services clubs and historical societies. \nThe workshops will provide information\, training and advice for organisations on their way to providing digital access to their collections. \nFunding is available to organisations through grants that can support participation at the workshop and/or assist with setting your organisation up for digitising collections. SUMMARY:“The fight to recover and honour the Australian dead at Fromelles” presentation by Lambis Englezos
DESCRIPTION:This is the story of how\, against the odds\, Lambis and his team uncovered the largest non-genocide mass burial in Western Europe since WW1 Рright where the team of “amateurs” had said it would be.\nIn 2000\, Lambis developed a theory that Australian diggers\, killed at the Battle of Fromelles\, were still lying in unmarked mass burial pits\, after being buried there by the victorious Germans in July 1916. Lambis set out to prove his theory with a view to seeing the diggers recovered and honoured properly. He was met by a wall of discouragement\, disbelief\, and official contempt\, but he persisted…and gradually an alliance of supporters\, media\, and amateur historians\, gathered around him. \nLambis Englezos is a Greek-born\, retired Art Teacher from Melbourne\, with a love of lawn bowls and a “magnificent obsession” to find\, recover\, and honour Australia’s missing diggers from the Battle of Fromelles. \nA remarkable and colourful figure\, he has become widely known as one of Australia’s foremost experts on Australia’s Great War experience. After meeting many returned diggers as a child growing up in Melbourne\, Lambis became fascinated with learning about the diggers of the First World War. \nLambis is the co-founder and driving force behind the internationally renowned “Friends of the 15th Brigade”. \nHe is acknowledged in many books including Les Carlyon’s ‘The Great War’ and Robin Corfield’s ‘Don’t Forget me Cobber’. Lambis was also instrumental in the publishing of his friend\, Roy Kyle’s\, memoirs. Roy’s ‘An ANZAC’s Story’ was edited by Bryce Courtenay and reached the best seller list in 2004. \nLambis is a central figure in Patrick Lindsay’s book ‘Fromelles’ and is acknowledged in the Robin Corfield book ‘Fromelles РDon’t Forget Me Cobber’\, for his contribution to the remembrance of this significant event in Australian history. He also featured in television stories on ‘60 Minutes’\, and the ABC ‘7:30 Report’ on the fate of the missing diggers. Additionally\, Lambis has written and been featured widely on this subject in print media. \nLambis received the Order of Australia in 2008 for his Fromelles work. He also won the inaugural Shrine Medallion in 2010 and was honoured by the RSL of Victoria with their ANZAC Award in the same year. \nIn 2010 Lambis again visited Fromelles to attend the Opening of the new Pheasant Wood Cemetery and the burial service of the final soldier of the 250 soldiers recovered from the mass grave. He was specifically named and thanked by the Governor General\, Quentin Bryce\, in her speech at the Opening. \nHe is proud to be part of the long journey to see dignity and honour brought to the diggers who disappeared on one horrible night in July 1916\, a night now described as the worst in Australia’s history. \nDoors open at 6.30PM \nThe ‘Pompey Elliott Memorial Hall’ is located at the Camberwell RSL Sub-Branch at 403 Camberwell Road\, named in honour of Major General Harold Edward ‘Pompey’ Elliott CB\, CMG\, DSO\, DCM\, VD. Elliott was a senior officer in the Australian Army during the First World War and served as a Senator in the Australian parliament. He was also the second President of the Camberwell RSL Sub-Branch in 1919. \nSeminar Speaker Program Logistics. SUMMARY:“The Savige Legacy” Roland Perry
DESCRIPTION:Roland Perry will discuss his just published 33rd book\, the biography of Stan Savige\, Australia‚Äôs most accomplished soldier involved in both WW1 and WW2.¬†He began a stint on Gallipoli in 1915 as a na√Øve Sunday-school teacher and left as the most deadly sniper on the peninsula. He served in the worst battle encounters on the Western Front as an intelligence officer and in Persia in 1918 on a special SAS-style mission.\nBetween the wars\, his concern for so many fallen soldiers in WW1 saw him create Legacy to aid their families. \nIn WW2\, Savige served in North Africa\, the Middle East and the Pacific. He was appointed Lieutenant General and rose to be Corps Commander. \nRoland Perry is a distinguished historian and author of a number of books on Australian military history including Monash: The Outsider Who Won a War and The Australian Light Horse. He won the prestigious Fellowship of Australian Writers National Literary Award for non-fiction (2004) with Monash. \nIn October 2011 Perry was made a Fellow of Monash University. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia ‚Äòfor service to literature as an author‚Äô in June 2011. Monash University bestowed a Professorship on Roland Perry in October 2012. SUMMARY:“Stealth Raiders: A Few Daring Men in 1918” presentation by Dr Lucas Jordan
DESCRIPTION:In 1918 a few low-ranking Australian infantrymen\, alone among all the armies on the Western Front\, initiated stealth raids without orders. These stealth raiders killed Germans\, captured prisoners and advanced the line\, sometimes by thousands of yards. They were held in high regard by other men of the lower ranks and were feared by the Germans facing them.\nWho were these stealth raiders and why did they do it? What made Australian soldiers take on this independent and personal type of warfare? Using their firsthand accounts\, as well as official archives and private records\, Dr Lucas Jordan pieces their stories together. Stealth Raiders is the first in depth study of the tactic commonly known as peaceful penetration. \nDr Lucas Jordan is currently a history teacher at Western English Language School in Melbourne. R.A.N played a significant role in the Australian Forces overall commitment. Destroyers sailed 400\,000 miles (nautical) and fired 100\,000 rounds of ammunition. HMAS Sydney carried 16\,000 troops. Famed as ‘Vung Tau Ferry’. \nThe Exhibition opens on Saturday 18 November 2017 at 2pm and will be available until 1 May 2018. Images\, video and artefacts will convey diverse stories and incidents\, many having hitherto not been available for the public to see.

DESCRIPTION:The immense German onslaught in March 1918 led to Britain‚Äôs gravest crisis of the war. \n \nThe Australians\, rushed to the rescue in this climax of the conflict\, were influencing the destiny of the world more than Australians have done in any other year before or since. The culmination of their vital contribution was the stunning counter-attack at Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day 1918. No one was more pivotal in this celebrated transformation than Pompey Elliott. In the centenary year of this famous battle\, award-winning historian Ross McMullin will illuminate what took place. There could hardly be a more appropriate talk for the Pompey Elliott Memorial Hall. \nDr Ross McMullin is an acclaimed biographer and historian\, and a lively and entertaining speaker. His latest book\, Pompey Elliott at War: In His Own Words\, has been recently released. Farewell\, Dear People: Biographies of Australia‚Äôs Lost Generation\, his previous book\, was awarded the Prime Minister‚Äôs Prize for Australian History and also the National Cultural Award. His 2002 biography Pompey Elliott won awards for both literature and biography. DESCRIPTION:October 23 marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein\, one of the turning points of the Second World War. The 9th Australian Division was crucial to the victory of Montgomery’s 8th Army at Alamein.
