DESCRIPTION:Maritime Border Command – Role\, Structure and Operations with Rear Admiral Peter Laver Commander\, Maritime Border Command.Peter Laver joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Midshipman in 1979 and completed specialist training as a Seaman Officer and Aviation Warfare Officer. He served in HMAS Canberra\, during which posting he was engaged in the operational evaluation of the Seahawk helicopter and United Nations Sanction enforcement operations against Iraq. Peter Laver assumed command of HMAS Tobruk in 2002\, then\, as Commander Sea Training in 2004\, he supervised the preparation of naval forces deploying to operations in the Gulf\, while overseeing a review of Naval readiness evaluation processes. \nHe was promoted to Captain in December 2004. Appointed to Command again in 2006\, he served as Commander Amphibious Task Group until 2008. Following a posting as\nChief of Staff to Chief of the Defence Force\, he was promoted to Commodore rank in 2010\, serving initially as Commander Fleet Air Arm\, then Director General Navy People\,\nand from December 2014 as Chief of Staff Navy Strategic Command. SUMMARY:2017 Chief of Army Conference - The Skill of Adaptability: the Learning Curve in Contact
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Chief of Army History Conference will be held on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 October 2017 at the Ballroom\, National Convention Centre\, 31 Constitution Avenue\, Canberra. The theme is The Skill of Adaptability: the Learning Curve in Contact.\nThe conference will discuss\, through historical examples\, how armies learn while in contact with the enemy. \nHow did the British Army – so successful in imperial policing in the 19th Century – face a skilful enemy versed in guerrilla tactics on the South African veldt? Were there inter-theatre lessons and learning transferable between Gallipoli and the Western Front? How did the British and French Armies adapt to the exigencies of trench warfare and develop new technologies and tactics in response to industrial warfare? In what ways and with what programs did the 2nd Australian Imperial Force train its soldiers from the deserts of North Africa to the jungle of the South-West Pacific? How did the experience of war enable the Red Army to implement their military doctrines and theories of the 1920s and 1930s? What real-time experiences and lessons did the British Army learn in fighting the Japanese in Burma\, and the US Army learn fighting the same enemy in the Central Pacific? How did the Australian Army adapt to both regular and irregular forces in South Vietnam? How did the same Army adapt to a major expeditionary deployment in East Timor after two decades of continental defence? Did the British Army employ the lessons learned against the IRA in Northern Ireland against the insurgency in Iraq? How long did it take the Canadians to re-learn the art of irregular warfare in Afghanistan? What lessons in military adaptability can armies of the 21st Century take from the wars of the 20th? \nIf you have pondered any of these issues (and more besides)\, then this conference is one you cannot afford to miss. Papers will cover a wide chronological period and a number of different countries in order to bring to light different ways armies have responded to the changing nature of war. SUMMARY:Lieutenant General Angus J. Campbell\, AO\, DSC\, Chief of Army
DESCRIPTION:Lieutenant General Angus Campbell joined the Australian Army in 1981\, graduating from the Royal Military College – Duntroon in 1984. He was assigned to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and after service with 3 RAR and within the Special Air Service Regiment\, in 2001 was appointed the Commanding Officer of 2RAR. While in command\, the Bn Gp deployed to East Timor\, as part of the UN Transitional Administration East Timor.Lieutenant General Campbell has also served in a range of staff appointments including as Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army\, as a strategic policy officer in Army Headquarters\, an instructor at the Australian Command and Staff College and as Chief of Staff to the Chief of the Defence Force. \nIn late 2005\, he joined the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as a First Assistant Secretary to head the Office of National Security\, subsequently promoted to Deputy Secretary and appointed to the position of Deputy National Security Adviser. Upon his return to the Australian Defence Force in early 2010 he was appointed to the rank of Major General and led the Military Strategic Commitments staff in Defence headquarters until January 2011\, when he assumed command of Australian forces deployed in the Middle East Area of Operations. SUMMARY:“Oswald Watt: a legend of the Australian Flying Corps” with Dr Chris Clark
DESCRIPTION:Oswald Watt ended the First World War as the senior officer of the Australian Flying Corps\, commanding the AFC’s largest single formation: No 1 Training Wing based in England. A greatly admired and respected figure\, his chance to make a lasting impression on Australia’s post-war history was cut short by a drowning accident in May 1921. Even so\, his reputation has lingered ever since\, yet there remains a great deal of misinformation and half truths about Watt’s life and career which borders on mythology. This talk will explain what inspired the writing of the first full biography of Oswald Watt\, and outline the many areas where previous understanding of his historical significance has fallen short of reality.\nChris Clark is a prolific author of Australian military history\, with many of his titles previously published under the name “Coulthard-Clark”. He has written across all three armed services\, from colonial times to the present\, producing biographies\, institutional and operational histories. He authored one of the volumes of the Official History of Australia’s involvement in South East Asian conflicts 1948-75 (covering RAAF operations in Vietnam) but is probably best known for his Encyclopaedia of Australia’s Battles. His biography of Oswald Watt appeared in September 2016.

This position was established under the Emergency Management Act 2013\nCraig has enjoyed a career in the Australian emergency management sector for more than 30 years. The majority of this time has been with the Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) including service as a volunteer firefighter. \nCraig is leading Victoria’s Emergency Management Sector towards an “all communities\, all emergencies” approach\, that puts community at the centre and applies a coordinated approach before\, during and after major emergencies. Craig is a director with the Emergency Services Foundation\, APCO\, Volunteering Victoria and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.
