SUMMARY:Broken Nation
DESCRIPTION:The Great War is\, for many Australians\, the event that defined our nation. The larrikin diggers\, trench warfare\, and the landing at Gallipoli have become the stuff of the Anzac ‘legend’. But it was also a war fought by the families at home. Their resilience in the face of hardship\, their stoic acceptance of enormous casualty lists and their belief that their cause was just\, made the war effort possible.\nCombining deep scholarship with powerful storytelling\, Joan Beaumont brings the war years to life: from the well-known battles at Gallipoli\, Pozieres\, Fromelles and Villers-Bretonneux\, to the lesser known battles in Europe and the Middle East; from the ferocious debates over conscription to the disillusioning Paris peace conference and the devastating ‘Spanish’ flu the soldiers brought home. Joan brings to life the fear and courage of tens of thousands of soldiers and conveys the impact on Australians at home and at the front of death on an unprecedented scale. \nA century after the Great War\, Joan‚Äôs talk\, Broken Nation\, will bring lucid insight into the dramatic events\, mass grief and political turmoil that makes the memory of this terrible war central to Australia’s history. \nPresenter: Professor Joan Beaumont \nDate: Wednesday 30 April\, 12.30pm start \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome

SUMMARY:Australian Heroines of World War One
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this compelling lecture recounting the lives of eight remarkable nurses whose resilience\, courage and skill took them from Australia to Gallipoli\, Lemnos and the Western Front.\nThese women\, represented in Susanna de Vries’ reprinted publication\, Australian Heroines of World War One\, had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. \nSister Hilda Samsing from Melbourne became a whistle-blower when nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon\, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded ANZACs. She defied censorship and kept a very frank diary. Brisbane’s Grace Wilson\, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought-stricken Lemnos Island\, arrived there to find suffering ANZACs but no drinking water\, tents or medical supplies. In France\, Florence James- Wallace\, Anne Donnell and Elsie Tranter nursed near the front line in Casualty Clearing Stations\, treating soldiers with hideous wounds or blinded by mustard gas. \nThese are just a few of the stories that will be explored by Susanna in her talk which will bring light to the remarkable work of Australian nurses in the First World War. \nPresenter: Susanna de Vries \nDate: Tuesday 15 April\, 12.30pm start \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome

SUMMARY:The Long Way Home - By Daniel Keene

SUMMARY:Australian Gallipoli Prisoners of War
DESCRIPTION:Despite the focus on the Gallipoli campaign\, little is known about the experiences of the Australians captured at Gallipoli and imprisoned in Turkey for 3 ½ years. Based on ten years of research in the Australian\, British and Turkish archives\, this presentation examines the identity of these men\, their various experiences in Turkey and challenges some of the myths that developed about them – that few returned home and that their experiences were similar to those experienced by the POWs captured by the Japanese in the Second World War.\nDr Jennifer Lawless is currently the manager of History curriculum in NSW. She was granted two Australian Military History scholarships and an Endeavour Fellowship to research the topic in Australia\, Britain and Turkey. Many of the Turkish sources have never before been translated into English. \nPresenter: Dr Jennifer Lawless\nDate: Thursday 27 February\, 12.30pm start\nCost: Free of Charge\, gold coin donation welcome

SUMMARY:Conserving Australia's Overseas War Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Most cultural heritage is difficult to protect against development pressures. The fact that Australia’s war heritage lies mostly in other people’s countries makes the conservation and management of significant sites and sometimes related artefacts even more difficult. Using illustrated examples from the two World Wars (Gallipoli\, Thai-Burma Railway) and the Korean and Vietnam Wars (Kapyong\, Long Tan)\, this talk shows how delicate negotiations at the international level have been required to enable this heritage to be recognised and protected for current and future Australians.\nWilliam (Bill) Logan is Professor Emeritus and UNESCO Chair of Heritage and Urbanism in Deakin University’s Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia\, member of the Heritage Council of Victoria and co-editor of the Routledge ‘Key Issues in Cultural Heritage’ book series. His research interests include World Heritage\, Asian heritage\, heritage and human rights\, and the heritage of war. \nPresenter: Emeritus Professor William Logan \nDate: Tuesday 18 February\, 5.30pm arrival for 6.00pm start \nCost: Free of Charge\, gold coin donation welcome

SUMMARY:Montana\, Mud & Mutton: U.S. Forces in Victoria 1942
DESCRIPTION:In March 1942\, Australia was on its knees. The Japanese were swarming southward\, Darwin had been bombed\, and the vast majority of Australia’s best troops were overseas fighting the Germans. Fear of invasion was very real…\nThen ships arrived at Port Melbourne bringing the first of hundreds of thousands of American troops to Victoria. It was a friendly invasion. They arrived like the cavalry in the old Hollywood western movies; “Just in the nick of time”. The “Yanks” came to train to fight the Japanese. They brought with them a boiling desire to “avenge Pearl Harbour” but also new things like swing music\, coca cola\, nylon stockings\, and a whole different version of the English language. They even brought their own serial killer. The “G.I.’s” hated our food\, were puzzled by our language and money\, but loved our people. \nJoin The Shrine’s Tim Whitford as he explores the impact the fresh faced “Yanks” had on the “Home Front” in Victoria and the lasting effects Victoria had on them. \nPresenter:Tim Whitford\nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome Date: Thursday 13 February\, 5.30pm arrival for 6.00pm start

SUMMARY:Surgeons of World War One
DESCRIPTION:By 1914\, a small number of determined women had been graduating from the Melbourne Medical School for 23 years and there were almost 130 women registered as medical practitioners in Australia. From the declaration of war in August 1914\, the male medical fraternity enlisted enthusiastically across the country and women doctors were just as keen to offer their skills and experience.\nTheir attempts to enlist\, however\, were met with firm rebuttals by military authorities in Australia\, New Zealand\, Britain\, Canada and America. This lecture narrates the little known story of the more than twenty Australian women who sidestepped the barriers to work as surgeons and medical officers on the battlefields of France\, Serbia and Galicia and military hospitals in Britain. \nPhotograph with kind permission of Catherine James Bassett \nPresenter: Dr Heather Sheard \nDate: Wednesday 19 March\, 5.30pm arrival for 6.00pm start \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome
