DESCRIPTION:Royal United Services Institute of Victoria presents Greg Barton\, Research Professor and Chair of Global Islamic Politics. \nGreg Barton is one of Australia’s leading scholars of both modern Indonesia and of terrorism and countering violent extremism. For more than 25 years he has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society\, especially of the role of Islam as both a constructive and a disruptive force. He has been active in the inter-faith dialogue initiatives and has a deep commitment to building understanding of Islam and Muslim society. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought\, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong interest in international relations and comparative international politics. SUMMARY:“Myths of Australia’s Vietnam War” with Professor Peter Edwards
DESCRIPTION:The Vietnam War\, Australia‚Äôs most controversial conflict of the twentieth century\, gave rise to an extraordinary number of myths. \n \nEven 50 years later\, many half-truths are asserted as if they were unchallengeable. \nThis talk looks at some assertions about the military\, strategic\, political\, and social aspects of Australia‚Äôs war that deserve to be challenged or questioned. \n  \nPeter Edwards (AM\, DPhil\, FAIIA) is a distinguished writer\, historian and biographer. \nHe is probably best known as the Official Historian of Australia‚Äôs involvement in the 1948-75 South East Asian conflicts (Malaya\, Borneo and Vietnam) for which he was the general editor of the nine volume series and author of two of the volumes. \nHis latest book is a summary of the series\, Australia and the Vietnam War (2014). Amongst his many other achievements and positions\, Peter is a former Trustee of the Shrine of Remembrance. \nPeter is also a Vice Patron of MHHV.

DESCRIPTION:The stories of Chinese Anzacs have tended to be untold within the larger story of the First World War. During the Anzac Centenary\, there has been renewed interest in understanding the experiences of Australia‚Äôs diverse cultural groups during the First World War. Chinese Anzacs served in many roles and in many theatres of war.\nThe stories in our present exhibition shed light on individual wartime experiences\, the challenges of being an Australian soldier of Chinese ancestry\, as well as the challenges for such soldiers on return to civilian life. While recruitment policies at the time were racially discriminatory\, most Chinese ‚ÄìAustralians who successfully enlisted completed their war service with the acceptance and respect of their fellow soldiers. There were over 220 Chinese who in listed in the AIF\, many gave the supreme sacrifice\, and many were awarded many medals of Gallantry. \nThis exhibition at Box Hill RSL\, gives not only our members an insight into Chinese Anzacs\, but also the General public\, who are also invited to view this most comprehensive exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:History Week in Queenscliff
DESCRIPTION:The three Museums in Queenscliff\, the Queenscliffe Historical Museum\, the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum and the Fort Queenscliff Museum\, have combined to provide speakers for two afternoons of fascinating stories about many of the events that form the history of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. So join us at the Monahan Centre overlooking Port Phillip Heads on Saturday 15th and 22nd October from 4 pm – 5:30 pm and be entertained by eight of our best speakers listed below. The cost is $10 and includes nibbles\, tea and coffee. Drinks are available at bar prices.\nSaturday 22nd October 2016\nKeith Quinton will talk on the “Forgotten Wars and Cruising Squadrons”. Keith is the author the two books\, “Defending Port Phillip” and “Stop the Pfalz”. The Pfalz was a German ship which unsuccessfully tried to escape Port Phillip Heads before the declaration of war in 1914. \nMary Grundy will talk on “The Bay Steamers ”. Over more than 60 years these steamers carried millions of day trippers and holidayers around the bay. Mary is a well known local identity with an extensive knowledge of early Queenscliff. \nGil Albutt will talk about “Gil Albut Remembers”. He will focus of the changed harbour landscape\, the fishing fleet in the ‘50s and the ‘mystery in the sand’ ! Gil came to Queenscliff at 16 from Portarlington and spent the next 30 years as a boat builder eventually running his own business Gilcraft. \nBob Marmion\, previously the honorary historian at Fort Queenscliff\, is launching his new book “Murder at the Fort”. This is a gripping murder mystery which investigates the disappearance of Gunner John Hulston from the Queenscliff back beach whilst on duty in 1942 and the murder of an army driver from the Fort.

His staff appointments include Deputy Director Air Warfare Development\, Director Naval Officer‚Äôs Postings and Director General of Defence Force Recruiting.\nHe has served as Commanding Officer 817 Squadron\, Commanding Officer HMAS Albatross\, Commander Australian Navy Aviation Group\, Commander Border Protection Command and most recently as Commander Australian Fleet. Receiving a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2006 for his achievements in naval aviation\, Vice Admiral Barrett became a Member of the Order of Australia in 2009 for his service as Director Naval Officers’ Postings and Commander Navy Aviation Group. DESCRIPTION:At least 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men served among the approximately 61\,000 Australian servicemen in Vietnam. They served for a variety of reasons even though most states still restricted Indigenous civil rights. This presentation will draw from oral histories and archival records to explore the life experiences of Indigenous Vietnam veterans. DESCRIPTION:Dr Jonathan Burdon\, AM\, Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) member and President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers will present a talk on The Battle of the Books: the RUSI’s Fromelles Collection at 401 Collins St Melbourne at 6:30 pm on Monday 18thJuly 2016.\nThe talk is presented as part of Melbourne’s internationally-copied Rare Book Week. It surveys the extensive holdings of the 126-year-old Library that relate to the battle. Though Fromelles was a one-night battle\, the debates that rage about it have generated a large published and un-published literature in book and ephemeral forms. Our holdings date from 1919 to the present. There are battle and unit histories\, biographies of the commanders\, plays\, juvenile accounts\, fiction\, archival research reports\, photos\, battlefield guides\, commemorative programs and many more. Dr Burdon will assess the historical value of each item – the collection will be available for viewing after the talk. \nFromelles had a short duration and a tragicresult but has become Australia’s best-documented battle of the Western Front. \nPlease support this presentation by your RUSI!

DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan\, join 6RAR Platoon Commander Dave Sabben as he discusses his experiences at Long Tan where 108 Australian servicemen fought off 1\,500-2\,500 Viet Cong. Dave was called up in 1965\, aged 20\, for the first intake of Australia’s National Service scheme. He served with 6RAR first tour and was awarded a Mentioned in Despatches which was later upgraded to a Medal for Gallantry (MG) for his service in the battle. DESCRIPTION:Dr Andrew Kilsby presents the¬†images of soldier photographer E K Burke\, who served with the 1st Australian Signals Squadron in 1918-1919.Burke was both a signaller and a photographer\, and the exhibition shows images of not only the operations of the signals squadron from training through embarkation to the deserts and mountains of the then Mesopotamia\, Persia and Kurdistan\, but also images of everyday life and places in those regions through his ‚Äòmilitary tourist‚Äô eye.\nThe British and Indian Army offensive to capture Baghdad in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) ended in ignominious defeat at the hands of the Turks in 1916.¬† But with fresh resolve new forces were assembled which captured Baghdad in March 1917\, supporting the Palestine campaign and keeping pressure on the Turkish armies as they retreated.¬† With the collapse of the Russian Armies in the region because of the Russian Revolution\, a new mixed Imperial and colonial unit initially called Dunsterforce\, attempted to support and train local militias in Persia (now Iran) to keep the pressure on the Turks and their German allies in the theatre. With the end of the war\, Allied forces remained in place and also moved into northern Kurdistan to keep the peace. Throughout the campaign in Mesopotamia\, Persia and Kurdistan\, an Anzac signals squadron and later an all Australian signal squadron supported the far flung operations in these regions\, providing signals intelligence as well as strategic and tactical communications as they trekked using horses\, mules and Ford motor vans. DESCRIPTION:The battle of Fromelles in July 1916 remains the worst 24 hours in Australian history. How could such a calamity occur? With the centenary of the disaster imminent\, historian Ross McMullin will analyse how the fiasco eventuated\, explain how it became for decades Australia’s little-known battle\, and discuss the developments at the battlefield in more recent years.\nRoss McMullin is the author of an award-winning biography of Pompey Elliott\, whose Victorian brigade had appalling casualties at Fromelles. Biographies of three outstanding members of Pompey Elliott’s brigade who died at Fromelles are included in Dr McMullin’s most recent book Farewell Dear People: Biographies of Australia’s Lost Generation\, a multi-biography of exceptional identities the nation lost in the Great War. Farewell Dear People has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History and the National Cultural Award. A group of aviators from Australia re-established the route flying unarmed PBY Catalina flying boats for up to 32 hours across enemy territory. In order to recognise these unsung heroes\, a museum in Outback Australia devised an ambitious plan—to restore a seventy year old Catalina flying boat and fly 18\,000km across the world\, from Spain to Longreach.
