After more than six years of dedicated research\, Tremlett presents a comparative portrait study of sixty-six First World War Digger memorials\, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the faces that have stood as silent sentinels for a century. \nTremlett’s meticulous process involved visiting\, documenting\, and researching each monument\, often capturing their likeness at sunrise to harness the purest light. His work results in powerful screen prints that mirror the iconic First World War studio portraits\, allowing you to see these memorials in a new light—both literally and figuratively. \nThe exhibition also sheds new light on August Rietman\, the most prolific Victorian sculptor of Digger statues. A pacifist of Swiss-German heritage\, Rietman’s figures are celebrated as the quintessential Aussie Digger. Tremlett’s research reveals that Rietman’s contributions to these monuments are far more significant than previously thought\, with at least fifteen statues attributed to his craftsmanship. \nImmerse yourself in this fusion of art\, history\, and research\, and witness the faces of our past brought vividly to life. \n  \n5 October 2024 – 13 April 2025

From grand monuments to humble sanctuaries\, you’ll discover the different visions that once competed for a place in the heart of Victoria. Reflect on the questions that challenged Victorians of yesteryear: should a memorial honour the past or herald the future? Should it be grandiose or modest\, solemn or hopeful? Decide for yourself whether the Shrine of Remembrance was the best choice for the National War Memorial of Victoria. \nOffering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the past\, visitors can examine detailed plans\, conceptual drawings and correspondence\, and eavesdrop on conversations between designers and builders from the 1920s\, gaining insight into the creative process behind the Shrine’s inception. \nAs we celebrate the Shrine’s 90th anniversary\, this exhibition serves as a poignant reflection on the roads not taken. DESCRIPTION:Forgotten men and women from Australia in a forgotten war – Burma 1942-1945. \n \n \n \nIf you didn’t know that Australians were involved in the longest campaign of WWII\, in Burma\, in what was called ‘a forgotten war’\, this conference will illuminate the lost and compelling stories of their service\, based on the book In the Fight.   \nThe conference tells of the involvement of Australians in what became one of the great sagas of the war against the Japanese in South East Asia\, encompassing India\, Ceylon\, Burma\, China\, Thailand\, Indo-China\, Malaya\, Singapore and Sumatra. \nWhile Australian airmen attached to the Royal Air Force were heavily engaged\, many other Australians both uniformed and civilian were part of the monumental struggle to turn ‘defeat into victory’ in Burma. The following year\, LO’UD would partner with the Australian volunteer organisation East Timor Women Australia (ETWA)\, which also this year celebrates their 20 years of cooperation with LO’UD. \nDrawing upon traditional weaving rich in stories\, and photography taken on the ground in Timor-Leste over the past fifty years\, Tais\, Culture & Resilience: Woven Stories of Timor-Leste shares an important part of the story of Timor-Leste’s struggles and their drive to maintain culture in the face of adversity. \nLO’UD weavers from the country’s far-eastern municipality of Lautem still work to preserve culture and alleviate poverty by marketing naturally dyed\, hand-woven textiles known as tais. The second group consists of Belgian men engaged in ongoing bomb disposal efforts on those same former battlefields today. \nDrawing inspiration from Australian cultural and artistic figures like photographer Frank Hurley and artist Will Longstaff\, artist Ian Alderman embarks on a philosophical journey exploring the enduring repercussions of human conflict—legacies that persist long after the cessation of gunfire. \nImages are accompanied by poignant quotes sourced from Australia’s Archives\, laying bare the plight of Australia’s war widows\, grieving mothers and traumatised returning soldiers. \n30 March – 29 September 2024

DESCRIPTION:By today’s standards George Mawby Ingram lived a courageous life.  \n \n‘This NCO showed great courage and initiative’. \n\nRecommendation for Military Medal\, March 1917\n\n‘He showed the most splendid qualities of courage and leadership’. \n\nRecommendation for Victoria Cross\, October 1918\n\n \nFrom a country boyhood growing up on the family’s orchards at Bagshot and Seville to his pre-war militia service in the Australian Garrison Artillery and the first year of World War One manning the guns at Rabaul in former German New Guinea. \nA dose of malaria in the Pacific had him sent home and discharged however this didn’t stop him\, five hours later he walked into a recruiting office in Melbourne and enlisted in the AIF. With the 24th Battalion he was sent to Europe and during his first action on the front line\, at Bapaume\, he was awarded the Military Medal. \nOver the next two years he experienced all the horror and heroism of the Western Front with the men who wore the red and white diamond. He survived the killing grounds of Bullecourt\, Ypres\, Flanders\, Passchendaele\, Villers Bretonneux and Mont St Quentin. He saw many good mates sacrificed and lost both his brothers in the war. \nOn October 5th 1918 at Montbrehain\, the AIF’s last battle of the Great War\, his actions led to him being awarded the highest award for gallantry in battle\, the Victoria Cross\, the last Australian to receive one for the First World War. After the war he returned home to a hero’s welcome. \nIn the post-war years he spent time as a soldier settler\, was an original member of the Shrine Guard and served once again in the Second World War with the Royal Australian Engineers. His last decades were spent working for Melbourne’s biggest building contractors E A and Frank Watts Pty Ltd. A tall\, modest man he rarely spoke of his war time experiences although he carried the physical and mental scars of that war for most of his life. \n \nAbout the presenter \nAnthony McAleer OAM has worked for Museums Victoria for the past twenty-three years where he currently manages the dedicated Visitor Engagement Team at the Immigration Museum\, undertaking tours and looking after visiting school groups. \nFor the last thirty-five years he has been involved with numerous community groups\, mainly historical societies and RSL clubs. \nHe has written twenty-four books and edited three\, mainly to do with the history of the Yarra Valley\, including his detailed accounts of the area’s military heritage and the recently published ‘Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans’. \nHe has also been responsible for the creation of some sixty memorials in the Yarra Valley area\, mainly recognising the district’s military history. \nHis achievements include being awarded Shire of Yarra Ranges ‘Citizen of the Year’ in 1997\, a Casey electorate ‘Special Community Achievement’ award in 2016 and in 2018 receiving a Medal of the Order of Australia for outstanding community service and for achievements in military history.

DESCRIPTION:The Syria-Lebanon theatre of the Second World War has become the great undiscussed warzone. Don’t mention the war! \nIn June 1941 Commonwealth\, Australian and Free French forces invaded Syria\, out of concern that Germany may begin using bases occupied by the Vichy French. \nOperation Exporter is probably one of the most misunderstood and forgotten campaigns of World War II. It was a complicated mixture of strategic imperatives around airfields and oil\, politico-diplomatic manoeuvering\, and improvisation with scarce military resources. \nLieutenant-Colonel Ron Lyons (retired) discusses this often forgotten Second World War campaign. Ron served for many years as an office of the Australian Army Reserve and subsequently as a military historian and battlefield guide. He is also Vice-President of The Military History Society of New South Wales and Vice-President of The Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies New South Wales. \nTIME AND VENUE: 10:30AM Saturday\, 7 September 2024 at The Auditorium\, Anzac Memorial Hyde Park\, Hyde Park South\, corner Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets\, Sydney CBD.
