DESCRIPTION:A free public event to mark the centenary of the end of the Gallipoli campaign.\nSponsored by the Contemporary Histories Research Group at Deakin University\, and the Australian Government‚Äôs Anzac Centenary Local Grants scheme. \nWestern Beach Room\, Deakin University Waterfront campus\nEnter through the Sally Walker Building\, via Cunningham St. Take the elevator to the 6th floor\, and turn right. \nThe Gallipoli campaign ended in Allied failure with the withdrawal of their forces from Peninsula in December 1915 and January 1916. On the centenary of the end of the campaign\, this event brings together three Deakin University historians to evaluate the experience of Gallipoli on the battlefield and at home. Could the campaign ever have succeeded? How did those at home support the war? SUMMARY:Voices from Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Some Australians who have fought in Afghanistan were only starting primary school when the war started after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. For thirteen years Australia’s servicemen and women have served\, often in multiple deployments. They were sent to bring stability and security to a country that has known little of either for a generation. Australia’s commitment to Afghanistan continues\, but with the winding down of major combat operations\, it is timely to look back on the war. This exhibition presents the perspectives of participants\, of those affected by the war – both in Afghanistan and in Australia – and of eyewitnesses to the conflict.\nThe Voices from Afghanistan temporary exhibition is located in the the Galleries of Remembrance\, a $45 million Victorian Government redevelopment that utilises 1\,600 square metres of undercroft space that exists beneath the Shrine of Remembrance. Over 800 objects are included in permanent and temporary exhibition spaces which illustrate the experiences of Australians at war and in peacekeeping operations\, from Pre-Federation to the present day\, with a particular focus on individual and unit stories of Victorian service and sacrifice. \nLast admission to the Galleries of Remembrance is 4.30pm.

SUMMARY:HMAS Goorangai March and Service - 2015
DESCRIPTION:It was November 20\, 1940 when the 230-ton Castle Class auxiliary minesweeper left her berth for the last time – cut in half in the darkness of a gale that evening by the 8364 ton troopship HMAT DUNTROON at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay.\nThe little ship\, a member of Minesweeping Group 54\, had been crossing the narrow entrance from Queenscliff\, where she had unloaded vegetables\, and was seeking shelter on the other side. \nOnce the bows of DUNTROON loomed high over her amidships\, her skipper David McGregor RANR and his entire crew of 23 were doomed. \nThe troopship\, steaming under wartime restrictions\, could not stop\, but sounded siren blasts to alert rescue craft in Queenscliff\, but in vain. Only seven bodies were ever recovered. \nIt was the RAN‚Äôs first loss in WWII and its first surface ship loss in any era (the only WW1 losses being the submarines AE1 and AE2). \nGOORANGAI was another of the many former fishing trawlers requisitioned from Carlo Camaniti’s fishing fleet\, Cam and Sons Ltd of Balmain\, Sydney\, and the first of two to be involved in notable wartime tragedies – the second being the extraordinary events surrounding the sinking of HMAS PATRICIA CAM by a Japanese float plane. \nGoorangai had been built at the State Dockyard\, Newcastle (NSW) in 1919\, for a short-lived State Government fishing venture. and was requisitioned from Cams at the outbreak of the war in September 1939. \nShe had taken part in sweeping operations around Wilson‚Äôs Promontory and Cape Otway\, after mines were laid in these areas early in the war by German raiders\, and had sunk the US merchant vessel City of Rayville\, and the British steamer Cambridge on the 7th and 8th of the same¬†month as Goorangai‚Äôs loss. \nGoorangai’s wreck\, laying in only 15m of water\, was demolished the following January as a shipping hazard\, but later designated an Historic Shipwreck site. The site remains popular with divers\, and apparently steel plates are scattered over a 200 sq m area of the seabed\, a small boiler can be seen\, and occasionally the rushing tides still undercover wartime gas masks. \nIn 2004\, the Royal Australian Naval Professional Studies Program initiated a series of occasional papers focusing on subjects related to the Naval Reserve: the series was named Goorangai\, after the ship. \nAs the RAN now begins to look back more on its history\, in 2006 a WW11 mine with a plaque attached was unveiled at a memorial service in Queenscliff Reserve\, recalling the memory of Goorangai and those lost. \n11:10 Marchers fall in\, King Street\n11:30 Service commences Ocean View Reserve\n12:30 Lunch\, RSL Hall\, King Street (must book)\nDress: Medals please

DESCRIPTION:The 2015 Seafarers Church Service will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral at 10:30 on 18 October 2015 and it will be followed by the Navy Wreath Laying Service at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance\, Melbourne at 12:30. \n\n\nThis service is in memory of the Victorian service men and women who served overseas or in Australia in all wars\, in ships or units of the Royal Australian Navy\, the Australian Army or the Royal Australian Air Force. \nThe names of those who enlisted in Victoria and served overseas during the First World War are recorded in the books displayed in the ambulatory of this Shrine of Remembrance. They served in the Middle East\, on the Gallipoli Peninsula\, in France\, in German New Guinea and on the oceans of the world. 89\,000 Victorians served overseas and 19\,000 made the supreme sacrifice. \nIn the Second World War\, 297\,000 Victorians served overseas and 10\,900 died. They served in many locations in the European\, Middle Eastern and Pacific theatres. \nIn later conflicts\, Australians served in a wide variety of theatres\, both as combatants and as peacekeepers\, as the need arose. Many Australian men are women are currently serving overseas \n\n\nWreath Laying in the Sanctuary.

On his appointment as an official war artist\, Dyson shifted the focus of his drawings from grand political narratives to individual soldiers and their hardships in combat. Dyson depicted the miserable conditions\, loneliness and suffering and the wry\, understated humour of the ordinary soldier. \nThe exhibition presents some of Dyson’s best known work\, focusing on the limited edition lithographs made from his frontline sketches. Oil paintings on loan from the Australian War Memorial give further insight into the breadth of his art.

SUMMARY:Commemorating The Great War in a Community Museum
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will present a community-engagement project which was focused on the development of the museological skills of volunteers running the LifeCare retirement village’s War Museum. University of Melbourne conservation students have worked with residents and volunteers for the past 5 years to help them establish good museum practices. The students’ appreciation of their positive contribution to stakeholder engagement\, community museums and commemorative displays deepened as residents demonstrated the links between their wartime experiences and the collection. With increasing professional activity the museum’s public profile expanded\, inducing more residents to contribute more time\, objects and stories to the museum.\nThe project’s beneficial outcomes‚Äîeducational\, personal and community‚Äîdemonstrate that people learn by solving real problems and can succeed at challenging tasks when the process means something to them\, personally. \nSophie Lewincamp has been the project manager for the RSL LifeCare Community Engagement and Conservation Project since 2012 collaborating with CCMC students & alumni\, Australian War Memorial staff and RSL LifeCare Veterans. In 2012\, the project was awarded The University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor‚Äôs Staff Engagement Grant.

SUMMARY:Digger statues: the Italian connection
DESCRIPTION:There are sculptures of ‚Äòdiggers‚Äô on the war memorials in many Australian towns and suburbs. The nearest is in Parkside\, on the verge of Sydney Road. Although they are hardly ever noticed\, they have been icons of Australian culture since the Boer War. But few know that many of them were actually designed and carved in Italy ‚Äì in the ancient marble workshops of Carrara ‚Äì and bought by Australian monumental masons\, who simply erected them on their pedestals. They are actually part of a long Italian tradition that goes back to Ancient Rome (and includes Michelangelo) on to which Australian iconography has been grafted. Because the tradition was that only the names of those who served and/or died should appear on our war memorials\, few artists signed their works\, so their valuable contribution to our culture was in danger of being lost forever.\nDonald Richardson OAM\, BA\, Dip.Art\, T.Dip.Art\, RSASA\, is an art and design historian who has published a book on the art and design of Australian war memorials: Creating Remembrance. DESCRIPTION:This conference explores the context and mainly the Australian ground and air operations in Korea in the period 1950-1953. \n \n  \nIntroduced by Patron of the Korean Veterans Association of Australia\, Major-General Jim Hughes\, AO\, DSO\, MC followed by award winning keynote speaker Cameron Forbes\, author of Australia in the Playground of Giants\, the one day proceedings will include presentations by military historians from the Australian War Memorial and the Australian National University\, authors\, scholars and veterans who will describe how Australia‚Äôs war began in Korea through the bitter retreat to Pusan from the North Korean attack in 1950\, through the triumphant advance to the Chinese border following US General MacArthur‚Äôs brilliant counter-stroke at Inchon\, and back again when the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army attacked the UN Forces and once again pushed them back\, this time to the 38th parallel. \nStatic warfare followed\, but air and ground operations continued to 1953\, and Australian forces remained in the thick of the fighting. \nTerrible winter conditions\, human wave attacks\, heroism and stoicism in equal measure with Turks and Greeks as allies ‚Äì the post WWII Anzacs fought a tough and tenacious enemy in difficult terrain and conditions. \nThis conference will remember the contribution of Australia to the UN ‚ÄòPolice Action‚Äô in Korea and commemorate the sacrifice and spirit of the Australians on the ground\, in the air and at sea who proudly call themselves ‚ÄòKorea Veterans‚Äô. \nCameron Forbes is an author and international correspondent.¬† His publications include The Korean War: Australia in the Giants’ ¬†Playground;¬† Hellfire: The story of Australia\, Japan and the Prisoners of War; Under the Volcano: The story of Bali; and Horseback: The story of the horse and the making of a nation. \nCameron Forbes has been Foreign Editor\, Europe correspondent and Asia correspondent for The Age and Washington correspondent for The Australian. He has reported on rebellions\, civil wars and wars in Northern Ireland\, Portugal\, Sri Lanka\, South Africa\, Bougainville\, the Philippines\, Burma\, the Middle East\, Afghanistan and Rwanda. DESCRIPTION:The Rum Rebellion was one of many episodes in a neglected saga of British Imperial Governance at the turn of the nineteenth century ‚Äì the insistent muddying of civil and military order in the colonies after 1783.\nPlacing the controversy about Governor Bligh in the context of contemporary scandals about Colonel Picton of Trinidad\, Joseph Wall of Goree and Commissioner Ball of Malta\, controversies about military governance did much more than to threaten Empire with the spectre of revolution. They were used by new\, old and tenuous British subjects to expose systemic flaws in colonial constitutions and legal procedures. In the process\, they produced a transformative type of constitution talk ‚Äì a language of privileges that legitimated a peculiar\, colonial compromise between civil and military order.
