SUMMARY:Eddie Adams: Saigon '68'
DESCRIPTION:“Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them; but photographs do lie\, even without manipulation.” – Eddie Adams\nIn 1968\, photojournalist Eddie Adams captured the most iconic image of the Vietnam War: a point-blank execution of a Vietcong prisoner on a Saigon street. \nThe photo epitomised the horror of war and was circulated worldwide\, galvanising global opposition to the war\, as well as condemnation of General Nguyen Ngoc Loan\, the man who pulled the trigger. \nYet the `truth’ of any photograph is not straightforward. While Adams was awarded many awards for the photograph\, the context of the shooting has never properly been examined. \nEddie Adams: Saigon ’68 explores the story surrounding the production and circulation of this image and raises pertinent questions regarding the power of photojournalism in affecting human rights agendas. \nThis screening will be followed by a panel discussion with some of Australia’s leading journalists and photojournalists. \nFull $12 Concession $10 ACMI Member $9

SUMMARY:Intelligence Squared Debates: Anzac Day Is More Puff Than Substance
DESCRIPTION:The plucky bravery of the ANZACs is one of our great national stories – it plays into our idea of who we are. But why is one of the touchstones of our identity based on a historic defeat? Some are sick of the mantras of ANZAC and mateship\, while others believe worship of soldiers is inappropriate in an era when we’re still at war in Afghanistan. Are we becoming warmongers – or recognising the sacrifice of our defence personnel?\nDr Simon Longstaff is Executive Director of St James Ethics Centre and chairs the Intelligence Squared debates in Sydney and Melbourne. \nCost $20 and $12 concession \nBookings Online

SUMMARY:Gallipoli 1998\, 2005 plus 'ANZAC' Show and Tell!!
DESCRIPTION:In his despatch¬† to the Secretary of the Admiralty dated July 1st 1915 \, VADM John de Robeck R N said of the Anzac troops\, ‘The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in this their 1st battle\, set a standard as high as that of any army in History\, and one of which their country men have every reason to be proud’.\nDenise and Mac Gregory fulfilled a long held ambition to attend an Anzac Day Service at Gallipoli on Anzac Day\, in 1998 .Mac will recount to us the trials and tribulations\,(smelly toilets etc\, very early start\, climbing the hills of Anzac in the dark in order to obtain a vantage point\, stumbling into gorse bushes and prickles\, and stumbling into old concealed shell holes etc.) \nDenise and Mac attended the ‘Dawn Service’\, Service at the Turkish Memorial at Cape Helles\, and¬† Lone Pine\, plus they visited many cemeteries. We will share their experiences on April 22nd. \nJenny and Rex Williams went to the Dardenelles October 10th-12th 2005.Very conscious of his British and Australian Heritage\, Rex was most anxious to gain an overall perspective of the campaign covering both the ‘Cape Helles’ area as well as ‘Anzac’. We will share photos of ‘V’ Beach where the collier River Clyde was beached\, and where 6 V C’s were won\, a beach where the sea was coloured red\, plus shots¬† of ‘W’ beach where 6 VC’s were also won. He took a photo of a field called ‘Eski Hiscarlik’ where on 1st-2nd May 1915\, thousands of Turks and allied soldiers were killed during a failed Turkish counter attack. As it is at Anzac Cove\, this is hallowed ground for both sides .Plus you will enjoy many photos taken at Anzac which some of you may be familiar. The third facet of our ‘Anzac’ meeting will be a ‘Show and Tell’ of ‘your’ Anzac ‘ memorabilia. Grand dad’s tin helmet\, his stories\, badges found at a first aid post\, bullets found near ‘Lone Pine’; all your artifacts are welcome to be shared!

In 1922 the Melbourne was involved in a dramatic rescue of the crew of an American schooner in the Tasman Sea\, at the height of a hurricane. \nThese events and other cruises of the Melbourne will be highlighted with artefacts of the ship and crew memorabilia drawn from the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian National Maritime Museum\, Museum Victoria\, Monash University\, the Museum of HMAS Cerberus\, and from individual donations. \n \nThe official opening of the Exhibition will be held at the RHSV on 26 March 2013 at 6 pm\, open to MHHV and RHSV members and descendants of the crew of HMAS Melbourne.  The opening will see the launch of a new history of the Melbourne – The Forgotten Cruiser: HMAS Melbourne 1912-1928\, by historians Andrew Kilsby and Commander Greg Swinden\, RAN.\nFollowing the official opening\, a free public lecture will be held on the subject of the Exhibition on 26 March 2013 at 7 pm at the RHSV\, presented by the authors of the history. \nIndependent curator Cooee History and Heritage has been appointed to produce the exhibition pro bono with support from MHHV\, RHSV and Deakin University volunteers.\nThe Exhibition is sponsored by the Port of Melbourne Corporation\, Navy Health\, and the Melbourne Naval Centre. \nEntry is free to MHHV and RHSV members and Port of Melbourne Corporation employees\, otherwise entry is by donation of $5 per head. \n \nHMAS Melbourne arrived in Port Phillip Bay on 26 March 1913.    It was the prequel to the RAN Fleet entering Sydney Harbour on 4 October 1913.  Led by the battle cruiser HMAS Australia\, Melbourne led the remainder of the Fleet into the harbour for the Fleet review.  Between 3-5 October 2013 there will be an International Fleet Review to commemorate this historic event.  See the Prequel at the Exhibition РFear God and Honour the King: HMAS Melbourne 1913-1928 at the RHSV over 18 February – 1 May2013\, to commemorate 100 years since Australia’s first cruiser arrived in Melbourne. \nFor School Groups\, see Teacher Guide here

SUMMARY:Survival at Sea
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Catherine McCullagh\nOn Friday 14 May 1943\, while the east coast of Australia lay in the darkness of the wartime blackout\, a brightly lit vessel cruised north\, a floating beacon against the blackened sea. The 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship Centaur was 40 miles east of Brisbane\, heading for New Guinea to take on casualties at Port Moresby. She carried a total of 332 passengers—76 crew and 256 medical staff\, including 12 nurses. The Centaur was ablaze with floodlights which clearly showed the traditional red crosses of a hospital ship painted on her hull\, deck and funnel. There was no doubt as to the nature of the target when\, at 4.10 a.m. on the morning of 14 May\, a torpedo hit the Centaur just forward of amidships. She sank in less than four minutes taking with her all but 63 of the ship’s passengers and crew. It would be 36 gruelling hours before the survivors were plucked from amidst the floating wreckage by a passing American warship. Ellen Savage\, the only surviving nurse\, would later be awarded the George Medal for her role in rallying the passengers over the long hours of darkness. The sinking of the Centaur would likewise become a rallying point in the bloody battle against the Japanese aggressor being fought in the jungles and swamps to Australia’s north.
