SUMMARY:It Wasn’t a Holiday Camp! Contrasting views of Italian wartime internment in Australia
DESCRIPTION:Part of the History & The Meaning of Things 2012 Seminar Series on History & Material Culture.\nOn 10th June 1940\, Fascist Italy declared war on Britain. The following day authorities began rounding up thousands of Italian men across Australian capital cities and regional towns. There were approximately 33\,000 Italian-born migrants in Australia at the time. \nOf an estimated 5\,000 Italians interned\, approximately 300 were from Victoria\, almost 1\,000 came from New South Wales\, 2\,700 from Queensland\, about 200 from South Australia\, and more than 1\,200 originated from Western Australia. This talk will present an overview of the contrasting life and times of Italian internees in two internment camps: Tatura in Victoria and Loveday in South Australia. Daily life in both camps could not have been more diverse. While Tatura was primarily used for interned families\, Loveday was a male-only camp with over 4\,000 inmates from many nations. While life at Loveday was modelled on prison routine\, Tatura was run more like a military hostel. Part of the presentation examines how material culture and eyewitness accounts can inform new ways of re-interpreting the official histories of these camps. \nMia Spizzica\, University of Melbourne \nPart of the History & The Meaning of Things\n2012 Seminar Series on History & Material Culture \nDiscovery Centre\, Lower Ground Floor\,\nMelbourne Museum\, Carlton Gardens\nWednesday 13 June 2012\, 1pm–2pm. \nFree entry\, bookings essential\nFor RSVP and information contact:\nMatthew Churchward\nSenior Curator\nHistory & Technology Department\nPhone 8341 7253 / 0407 096 586\nEmail mchurch@museum.vic.gov.au \nMia Spizzica has worked as a teacher of History\, Languages\, Social Studies and English as a Second Language. In the 1990s\, she taught at the University of Siena\, Italy\, later lecturing at RMIT University. She holds a Master of Education and Master in Counselling and is now studying as a PhD candidate in History at the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on the lived experiences of Italian migrants in Australia during the 1930s and 1940s. The project concentrates on Italian migrants who were interned in Australia from 1940 onwards. One of those internees was her grandfather\, Antonino\, who migrated to Australia in 1927.

SUMMARY:A History of the Royal Australian Navy\, Volume 1
DESCRIPTION:A Navy Video produced by our Navy Video Unit\, Sydney in 2008 – a navy does not drop from the clouds. It is a miraculous and delicate instrument\, a creation of nerves as well as steel\, united with blood as well as rivets; it is in many ways the greatest expression of a nation’s genius. Sir Louis Hamilton\, Chief of Australian Naval Staff. 1945\nDetail: The History of the Royal Australian Navy is an extraordinary story of drama\, politics\, courage\, triumph and tragedy. Paralleling the Australian national experience\, it spans the years since European settlement in 1788\, through Federation and World Wars\, through social and geopolitical upheaval\, through technological revolution…. through to the present day Australia and the role of the modern fleet. \nWe will view the first two episodes of this excellent series: Episode 1 Traces the genesis of the Australian Navy through colonial days up to the beginning of WW I\, and Episode 2 covers our involvement in the World conflict. We operated in the North Sea\, Mediterranean\, Pacific\, the Far East and Indian Oceans. Our Australian ships and men fight alongside the R N and our allied counterparts\, recording both thrilling victories and tragic losses. In the crucible of total and catastrophic war our Australian Sailors\, like the ANZACs ashore\, forge what will become a unique and defining national consciousness. With the centenary of ANZAC to the fore-front of our consciousness on April 27th\, it will complement our celebrations as we view this excellent video\, for it depicts the splendid achievements of the Navy in WWI. First in—Last out at ANZAC\, is a very proud boast!!! The Silent Service did it’s job in WWI and did it extremely well\, thus ensuring the final victory in 1918. Victory wasn’t possible without the tremendous sacrifices of the Army and the Flying Corps\, but the ultimate aim of control of the seas was essential to achieving the defeat of our enemies in both wars! \nJoin us at the Melbourne Naval centre\, Melbourne Naval Centre\, 146W Toorak Road South Yarra. Melways 2LE4-opposite Fawkner Park in the ESU Building. \nPlease note our new starting time of 6 Pm when we enjoy our pre meeting supper. There is a $5 charge to defray costs: The library will be open from 5 PM

SUMMARY:Black Diggers
DESCRIPTION:By Tom Wright Originally produced by Queensland Theatre Company and Sydney Festival\nThe untold story of our Indigenous ANZACS. \n \nOne hundred years ago\, in 1914\, a bullet from an assassin‚Äôs gun in Sarajevo sparked a war that ignited the globe. Patriotic young men all over the world lined up to join the fight ‚Äì including hundreds of Indigenous Australians. \nShunned and downtrodden in their own country ‚Äì and in fact banned by their own government from serving in the military ‚Äì Aboriginal men had to hide their heritage to enlist. Undaunted\, these bold souls took up arms to defend the free world in its time of greatest need. For them\, facing the horror of war on a Gallipoli beach was an escape from the shackles of racism at home\, at a time when Aboriginal people stood by\, segregated\, unable to vote\, unable to act as their children were ripped from them. When the survivors came back from the war\, there was no heroes‚Äô welcome ‚Äì just a shrug\, and a return to drudgery and oppression. \nBlack Diggers is the story of these men ‚Äì a story of honour and sacrifice that has been covered up and almost forgotten. \nDirected by Wesley Enoch and written by Tom Wright\, Black Diggers is the culmination of painstaking research into the lives and deaths of the thousand or so Indigenous soldiers who fought for the British Commonwealth in World War I. \nGrand in scale and scope\, it draws from in-depth interviews with the families of black Diggers who heard the call to arms from all over Australia\, as well as conversations with veterans\, historians and academics. Young men will step from the blank pages of history to share their compelling stories ‚Äì and after the curtain falls\, we will finally remember them. \n‚ÄúEmbraced as a poignant and essential piece of theatre.” Daily Review \n‚ÄúA new high point in telling a national narrative‚Äù The Guardian

DESCRIPTION:Australian soldiers praised stretcher-bearers on every battlefield of both world wars. From the landing at Gallipoli to the last campaigns of 1945\, in desert\, jungle\, mountains and mud\, Australian stretcher-bearers routinely risked their lives to save others. To win that praise\, all bearers paid a high price. Their job was intensely dangerous and no category of Australian soldiers saw more of war’s suffering. In this talk Dr Mark Johnston\, author of a new book on stretcher-bearers\, explores their life-saving work.\nDate: Wednesday 25 February\, 5.30pm arrival for 6.00pm start \nLocation: Auditorium\, Education Centre\, Shrine of Remembrance \nCost: FREE\, gold coin donation welcome

SUMMARY:Gallipoli 1915: a century on
DESCRIPTION:An international conference hosted by the Australian War Memorial and the Australian National University Llewellyn Hall\, Australian National University\, Canberra.\nThe Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was one of the most controversial campaigns of the First World War. The major allied powers aimed at shortening the war by eliminating Turkey\, but the campaign ended in complete failure and over 140\,000 allied casualties. \nOne hundred years later\, the campaign still generates mythology and debate over the strategy and planning\, the real or illusory opportunities for success\, and the causes of failure. The campaign involved military and naval forces from many nations around the world\, and the lingering memory of Gallipoli continues to play a central role in the national narratives of Australia\, New Zealand\, and Turkey. \nOn the centenary of Gallipoli\, Australia’s national memorial and museum of war joins with Australia’s national university to host this major international conference. Leading historians from all the countries who contributed forces to the campaign will present the most current perspectives on the many faces of Gallipoli. \nThemes to be covered will include: \n\nThe planning and conduct of the campaign on land and sea\nThe impact of Gallipoli on the societies involved\nMyth\, memory\, and nationalism\nThe legacies and heritage of the Gallipoli peninsula\nGallipoli today.\n\nThis is the conference not to miss in this important centenary year. \nPlease contact Paulina Leko at Conference Logistics for any enquiries relating to the conference. Paulina can be contacted on 6281 6624 or paulina@conlog.com.au

SUMMARY:Choppers: Helicopters and the Vietnam War - MHHV one-day conference
DESCRIPTION:MHHV and the National Vietnam Veterans Museum (NVVM) will hold a one day conference at the NVVM on Saturday 20 April 2013\, between 9 am and 4.30pm: \n \n\n\nThe conference will be opened by Dr Peter Edwards\, AM\, Official Historian for Australia’s involvement in South East Asian conflict 1948-1975\, and the keynote speaker will be Air Vice Marshal Bob Treloar AO (RAAF Rtd). \nThe war in Vietnam has left indelible impressions upon our society.  One of the great icons from that decade-long conflict was the helicopter.  It was the first time that helicopters were used extensively in a war and as the war progressed the roles employed by helicopters expanded dramatically.  Whether operating as slicks (troop carriers)\, gunships\, medevac\, heavy lift\, observation or aerial trucks\, ‘choppers’ became the ubiquitous symbol of the war in Vietnam Рand essential for the conduct of the war.  No-one who served in Vietnam left without some experience of helicopters\, directly or indirectly. \nWhat Australian helicopter units served in Vietnam and what were their stories?  How did the Australian and New Zealand air and ground crew and performance compare to others? How did they adapt to new helicopter types and tactics? How did helicopters help or hinder our operations in Vietnam? What was the impact on casualty evacuation and survival rates for wounded?  What did we learn from the helicopter experience? These are some of the questions this symposium seeks to address. \nThis fully catered conference\, in the superb setting of the NVVM and under the wings of a Canberra bomber\, will be a must-go event for Vietnam veterans\, historians and those who want to learn more about the helicopter experience in Vietnam. \nTo Register and pay online for the Conference\, click here \nTo download a registration form and pay by cheque\, click here \n\n\n \nTo learn more about the Museum dinner on Saturday evening 20 April at the NVVM\, click here \nDownload a copy of the Conference Programme by clicking here \n\n \n \n\n\nFor speakers and delegates and their partners and families who expect to be on Phillip Island for the Choppers: Helicopters and the Vietnam War weekend of activities\, an accommodation package has been created with the superb Silverwater Resort nearby if you wish to avail of it.  Click here to book accommodation for 19 and/or 20 April 2013 in one\, two or three bedroom villas.   Use the promotional code VETS2013 to obtain the great rates available for this weekend – just enter the promotional code into the box and the special rates will come up. \n \nIf you do not have internet access to this link\, please call Meg Forsyth at Silverwater Resort who will be able to book you at the discounted rate when you give the promotional code. \nTel: 03 5671 9384. \nPlease book early to avoid disappointment as rates will go up as the resort fills for that weekend. \nTo learn more about the Museum Activities day on Sunday 21 April\, 2013\, click here \n\n\nThis is a Military History and Heritage Week event – to learn more about MHH Week\, click here \nProudly supported by:
