DESCRIPTION:The 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day will be commemorated at the Shrine of Remembrance on Saturday 15th August 2015.\n  \nThe service will commence at 12 noon. The commemoration will take the form of an address by Her Excellency the Governor of Victoria\, the Hon. Linda Dessau AM\, followed by a wreath laying ceremony and then the commemoration itself. \n  \nThe ceremony will take about 35-40 minutes and will be followed by refreshments in the Shrine‚Äôs Visitors Centre. \n  \nVeterans and members of the public are requested to be seated by 11:50 am.

SUMMARY:Military Rule and Civil Order in the Counter- Revolutionary Empire
DESCRIPTION:The Rum Rebellion was one of many episodes in a neglected saga of British Imperial Governance at the turn of the nineteenth century ‚Äì the insistent muddying of civil and military order in the colonies after 1783.\nPlacing the controversy about Governor Bligh in the context of contemporary scandals about Colonel Picton of Trinidad\, Joseph Wall of Goree and Commissioner Ball of Malta\, controversies about military governance did much more than to threaten Empire with the spectre of revolution. They were used by new\, old and tenuous British subjects to expose systemic flaws in colonial constitutions and legal procedures. In the process\, they produced a transformative type of constitution talk ‚Äì a language of privileges that legitimated a peculiar\, colonial compromise between civil and military order. Major Wells served with 1¬†Commando Company from 1956 through to 1971. During that period he¬†volunteered for service with the AATTV in 1965. Following intensive training¬†for Advisors at The School of Infantry\, Jungle Training Centre Canungra and the¬†Military Intelligence Centre\, he was posted to Vietnam in May 1966. After¬†initial familiarisation visits to South Vietnamese outposts in Danang\, Hue and¬†Quang Tri\, he moved to Phuoc Tuy Province where he replaced a US Major as¬†Operations Advisor. This was prior to 1ATF arriving at Nui Dat. \nAfter retiring from the ADF in 1973 Major Wells served as CEO of several¬†manufacturing companies\, during which he also served as Vice President of¬†the Company Directors Association of Australia-Victoria Chapter. \nHe is currently President of AATTV Association Victoria. \nVenue\nThe venue is the Club Pavillion\, Level 2 of the RACV City Club\, 501 Bourke Street\, Melbourne. DESCRIPTION:The National Vietnam Veterans Museum is proud to be hosting 4 performances of Minefields and Miniskirts ‚Äì A play by Terence O‚ÄôConnell adapted from the book of the same name by Siobhan McHugh. ¬†¬†\nAlmost a thousand Australian women took part in the conflict in Vietnam ‚Äì the accounts of fifty women directly affected by the war are compressed into five characters: The journalist; the volunteer; the veteran‚Äôs wife; the entertainer; the nurse. Well loved songs from the era punctuate five interwoven monologues to create a performance that will move and entertain you. \nThis rehearsed play reading will be staged amongst the exhibits within the Museum\, providing an atmospheric backdrop for the cast and audience alike. SUMMARY:Battle of Fromelles Commemorative Service
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Fromelles commemorative service is part of the annual pilgrimage by the Friends of the 15th Brigade commemorating the battle at Fromelles\, fought on July 19\, 1916. This was the first major action involving Australian troops on the Western Front. It was planned as a diversionary attack to prevent German troops moving from this\, a relatively quiet area\, to the large battle being fought in the valley of the Somme. A mass-burial site was found near Fromelles and exhumed. It yielded the lost remains of 250 soldiers killed during the Battle of Fromelles who were reburied in individual graves in 2010\, their dignity and in the case of many\, their identity was restored.\n  \nThe service will take place at the Cobbers Statue on the Shrine Reserve.

DESCRIPTION:Sir John Monash GCMG KCB VDJohn Monash\, compassionate leader\, cared in war and peace for his men who came from every state and territory of Australia. He planned and won the innovative Battle of Hamel and then in the highly successful Battle of Amiens on 8 Aug 1918 (0808)\, the Australians turned the tide of WW1 impacting the outcome of the War bringing it to an end in 3 months\, far earlier than anyone expected. On 12 Aug 1918 King Geo V knighted Monash in the field at his Bertangles HQ. Monash‚Äô meticulous planning\, drawn from his legal\, engineering and musical backgrounds ‚Äì he likened work to conducting an orchestra ‚Äì was a measure of his overall life success. DESCRIPTION:The Blamey Oration perpetuates the memory of¬† Field Marshal Sir Thomas Albert Blamey\, GBE\, KCB\, CMG\, DSO\, ED\, Australia‚Äôs highest ranking serviceman\, who was commander-in-chief concurrently of the Australian Military Forces and the Allied Land Forces\, South-West Pacific Area\, from 1942 to 1945 when Australia‚Äôs security was directly threatened by Japan.\nThe Royal United Services Institute of Victoria¬†in conjunction with¬†The Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey Memorial Fund¬†have pleasure in presenting the¬†Blamey¬†Oration\, 2015¬†to be given by¬†Professor Peter Leahy. \nTopic: Another century\, Another Long War. \nProf Peter Leahy\, AC- Director\, National Security Institute \nLieutenant General¬†Peter Leahy\,¬†AC is a retired senior officer of the¬†Australian Army\, whose military career culminated with his appointment as¬†Chief of the Army¬†from 2002 until 2008. SUMMARY:The 2014 John Duigan Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The John Duigan Memorial Lecture is held annually by the Aviation Historical Society of Australia to commemorate the first flight\, by John Robertson Duigan on 16th July 1910\, of an aeroplane designed and built in Australia\, and to discuss other significant events in the history of Australian aviation.\nSteve Campbell-Wright is the author of the recently-published book “An Interesting Point – A History of Military Aviation at Point Cook 1914-2014”. He will talk about what has happened at RAAF Point Cook over the past 100 years. Having lived at Point Cook for almost a quarter of a century and with a passion for social history\, Steve has a deep insight into the military presence at Point Cook and the place’s significance to Australian military and civil aviation. The Lecture will be held at the RAAF Association\, 24 Camberwell Rd\, Hawthorn East. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the Lecture. Parking is available in Camberwell Road\, or under the building – enter from the lane at the south-east end. SUMMARY:Tim Smith: Military Heritage – From Victoria to the Turkish Dardanelles
DESCRIPTION:Victorians are invited to an informative evening of local and international military heritage news\, as the Royal Historical Society of Victoria welcomes the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria\, Tim Smith.To be held on Tuesday 19 May at 5.45pm\, Tim will discuss the work being done to protect and celebrate military heritage sites\, both here in Victoria and in parts of Turkey. \n“Heritage Victoria has been working hard to actively protect military heritage sites around the State\, and I’ll provide an insight into our various initiatives – from interactive self-guided heritage tours to innovative 3D scanning of key sites\,” noted Tim. \n“I’ll also share highlights from my longstanding private volunteer involvement in international archaeological projects related to war heritage sites.” \nA site Tim has been heavily involved in is Australia’s Gallipoli submarine site РAE2 (1913-1915) Рlocated near the Turkish Dardanelles. \nTim will discuss the findings of the recent archaeological expedition to the site\, including the archaeological approvals process\, the methodology developed to investigate the internal areas of AE2 with least impact\, and the research questions answered by this internationally unique scientific survey of a World War One British E-class submarine. \n“Our discussion will explore the heritage value of AE2 to both Turkey and Australia\, the historical role it played in the Battle of Canakkale (The Dardanelles Campaign)\, and the new appreciation for the craft and its brave crew that has been generated through the Foundation’s work\,” explained Tim. \n“I’ll also illustrate a private project led at Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay in 2010 to map the underwater battlefield cultural landscape. \n“And I’ll share highlights from a recent joint initiative with Turkish colleagues inspecting World War One submarine wrecks in Port Phillip Bay.”\nAbout the speaker\nTim Smith is the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria and delivers the functions of the Heritage Act 1995 Рincluding nominations for places and objects for inclusion on the State-level Victorian Heritage Register (VHR)\, permits for changes to listed items\, and management of the State’s archaeological resource. SUMMARY:For King and Country: East Melbourne and the Great War
DESCRIPTION:When Britain declared war in August 1914\, Australians reacted with enormous patriotism. Young men in their thousands signed up to serve in what would be a long drawn out and bloody conflict in which 60\,000 young Australians died\, about one in ten of all men aged between 18 and 40. Young women\, too\, volunteered to serve as nurses\, often ahead of their brothers. Though only a small suburb\, there were over 770 with some connection Рbirth\, work\, housing – to East Melbourne.\nOn 16 October\, the East Melbourne Historical Society will open an exhibition recalling the life and service of some of those who volunteered. Called ‘For King and Country’\, it will commemorate the service of sixteen volunteers who served in World War 1 at Gallipoli\, Egypt\, France\, Belgium and the minor theatres of war. \nThe exhibition will be free and open to the public from 17 October-11 November at the East Melbourne Library\, 122 George St\, East Melbourne.

SUMMARY:D-Day Experiences of an RN Commando
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker is Commander Jim Speed DSC RAN Ret.\n70 years ago\, Jim Speed was a young Sub/Lt Commando on Sword Beach Red. \nThe Commandos job was to land on the beach prior to the landing craft and assist the unloading of troops by holding the landing craft staying ‘bows on the beach’. Thus it was that Jim met the first wave of the landing come in to the beach\, observing history being made whilst under fire! \nJim’s first day also involved helping with the removal of the obstacles and marking the location of sunken landing craft. The first night\, and the two after\, they had to man the perimeter trenches in readiness for the expected counter attack. There was still a lot of the enemy not far away! \nThis is a brief summary of just part of Jim Speed’s story. After the war Jim rejoined the Royal Navy. Intrigued????. Indeed there is much more to tell . \nJim Speed was awarded his DSC for his services in Normandy!! The 30-minute talk will be followed by Q&A with Jill Singer. \nACM Angus Houston was the Chief of the Defence Force from 4 July 2005 until 4 July 2011\, when he retired from the military after 41 years of service. In 2011\, Angus was named the Australian Father of the Year and in 2012 the ACT Australian of the Year. Angus was Chair of the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board from July 2011 until March 2014.
